Welcome to Bournemouth – home of beautiful beaches and the finest Jazz on the South Coast! What is Jazz you may ask?

To me, it is simply a way of playing music with improvisation and style..........whether it be Smooth or Swing, Latin or Big Band, Modern or Trad, Gypsy or Soul, Acid, Fusion or Funk, we have chosen a programme of Jazz music that we hope you will enjoy. Headline acts include the Ginger Baker Experience with US drummer Gene Calderazzo and renowned British saxophonist Andy Sheppard plus a host of international jazz stars. Playing for us this year will be vocalist Jacqui Dankworth, daughter of Johnny and Cleo Laine, Jean Toussaint and The Young Lions, Yazz Ahmed and her family Hafla band, superb Indian clarinettist Arun Ghosh with his Indo Jazz sextet, talented Theo Travis’s Double Talk and celebrated jazz singer Tina May. Local musicians, Zoe Schwarz and Blue Commotion, The Ian Ellis Quartet, Andy Urquhart and The Sound of Blue Note, Sarah Bolter, Rachel More and The Revolution Club make up the Bournemouth jazz scene. For Big Band enthusiasts, there’s Swing Unlimited, Girls Only Jazz Orchestra, In the Pink and the Bournemouth University Big Band.

In the town square, we have created jazz village with a stage for our programme of free concerts. Come, sit and listen to a variety of jazz music to suit all tastes. New this year, a World Jazz Jamboree event featuring talented musicians from around the globe. In addition, there are a variety of themed jazz events in hotels, bars and restaurants across town. To encourage young musicians to play jazz, we are organising a series of jazz workshops and a competition with Awards ceremony and concert on Sunday night. International saxophonist Jean Toussaint has created his Herbs and Roots project with the Young Lions which features an all-star line up of young British Jazz Musicians exploring the music of the legendary bandleader Art Blakey and his illustrious Jazz Messengers.

Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK. Known primarily as a jazz singer, Jacqui’s unique musical palette also draws on folk, soul, blues. Her performance with pianist and husband Charlie Wood is inspired by some of the great musical partnerships such as Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong and George & Ira Gershwin.

One of Britain’s most popular jazz singers Tina May, performs with Bournemouth’s very own Sarah Bolter quartet in a programme highlighting her skills as a singer with an attractive style and beautiful voice.

Yazz Ahmed Zoe Schwarz and Rob Koral

A dynamic and distinctive jazzy blues sound from this award winning band based in Poole. Zoe is considered one of the best female blues singers in the UK at the moment and we are delighted to hear her sing with her guitar playing husband Rob Koral in the Festival again this year.

Tipped as a rising jazz star and winning great reviews with the flugelhorn , Yazz brings her Ahmed Family Hafla Band to Bournemouth this year. She received a commission from the Tomorrow’s Warriors to write music for their jazz orchestra which draws on her Arabian heritage with tales of migration and family traditions in a celebration of cultural diversity.

Arun Ghosh’s Indo-Jazz Sextet play original music of South Asian origin with a contemporary jazz attitude. Using the spirit and language of jazz, his music is full of lyrical melodies and searching harmonies from the Indian sub Continent.

Andy Urquhart is one of the leading jazz trumpeters in the south of England and we are fortunate that he can join us in Bournemouth this year. Although a full-time musician in the Army, Andy plays with the likes of Gilad Atzmon, Liane Carroll and Ian Shaw and this weekend plays with his own group, the Sound of Blue Note together with trombonist Mark Nightingale.

A feast of vintage and modern Gypsy Jazz, Swing, Tango and French Chansons including the classics, such as Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour arranged in their own unique style by Musique a Trois and sung by Bethany Jameson.

If you wanted to combine the wit of Ronnie Scott and the saxophone gymnastics of Michael Brecker then you should look no further than the enigmatic Ian Ellis. A mainstay of Bournemouth’s jazz scene Ian hails from London and his husky tenor saxophone has featured on many UK tours.

This unique all female 20-piece Big Band has a loyal and enthusiastic following and will be performing their jazz favourites in concert with special guest vocalist Tina May

In her exploration of French songs, Véronique Joly will be revisiting her French heritage, presenting fresh arrangements of some classic “chansons” and introducing new tunes that deserve our attention.

The Rachel More Trio

The Rachel More Trio perform a mixture of cool sophisticated jazz standards, swing, blues and bossa nova favourites. Their repertoire includes numbers made popular by the original jazz divas like Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

Tom Gwyther Group

Continental style jazz quartet playing soul jazz fusion. The Tom Gwyther Group perform a great mix of music with intricate melodies, smooth grooves and fascinating rhythm.

Charlie Farran & His R&B Band

Lead by Drummer and Band Leader, Charlie Farran, this 7 Piece Rhythm & Blues Band will be certain to keep your feet tapping.

Swing unlimited big band

One of the best Swing Bands in the South of England with their popular Big Band programme paying tribute to great jazz musicians of the past including Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Frank Sinatra.

Spiral jazz

Spiral Jazz is described as the ultimate groove experience, taking the cream of jazz/funk/ fusion sounds created in the 70’s and 80’s and brought right up-to-date by adding a mix of melodic and rhythmic extemporisations.

Revolution Club

When not performing ambient jazz, Revolution Club’s guitarist and composer, Dave Carson works in the studio producing other artists. At the Festival they will be playing a selection of their own original material in the Nu Jazz / Acid Jazz style.

Bournemouth’s celebrated Coates family bought the building in 1876 and transformed it into the luxurious Royal Bath Hotel and over the years it has accommodated many famous people, celebrities, movie stars, royalty and heads of governments.

his classic 1930s building is the venue for our Young Musician’s workshops, Jazz Competition and Awards Ceremony. The ornate ballroom, which was originally one of the largest tea rooms in the country is an ideal setting for our Awards ceremony and Sunday night Concert which features the combined bands of the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Bournemouth University Big Band playing in a unique battle of the bands. The Bournemouth University Dance Society will also be presenting their Jazz dance sequence specially choreographed for the festival.

riginally a private home in the centre of Bournemouth, The Norfolk Royale Hotel has hosted many important visitors and this year it becomes the venue for our celebrated World Jazz Jamboree with jazz musicians from across Europe and beyond.

chaplins Chaplins is a unique music venue located in the heart of Boscombe. The venue plays host to original live music as well as poetry, comedy and theatre events. Decorated by a variety of local artists Chaplins has been awarded a number of prestigious awards and is currently holder of The Best Community Pub in the UK. It has earned an outstanding reputation at the centre of the Bournemouth Music Scene, encouraging popular local Bands and musicians. Chaplins is a must-see place, whether for food, music, beverages or just for inspiration.

H

oused in a beautiful Grade 2 listed building, Canvas used to be the old Bournemouth Arts Institute and therein lies the inspiration for its name. The original exposed brick work gives the venue a rustic and stylish dĂŠcor, decorated with antlers, bicycles and wine bottles hanging from the ceiling, it has become one of the most unique and quirky venues in town. Recognised for its character, personality and quality of the service, Canvas is delighted to be part of the Bournemouth Jazz Festival.

or jazz fans, there’s something special with the Hotel Miramar’s ‘Sounds of Summer’ which is a calendar of live jazz performances held during the summer months in the hotel’s grounds, where you can enjoy supper and a bottle of something chilled as you watch the sun set across the bay. wing Unlimited Big Band was founded in 2001 with the primary aim of providing opportunities for local musicians to play a range of "Big Band" music. Following on from this was

the desire to perform this music, bringing pleasure to local audiences. Since then, as a non-profit, community organisation, SUBB has also endeavoured to use its talents to help support local charities and good causes.

In recent years, the number of professional musicians in the band has increased, inspiring everyone to raise their game. The quality of music, the breadth of repertoire and the sheer energy of live performances is the best ever and SUBB is now critically regarded as one of the best independent jazz/swing Big Bands in the country.

The World Jazz Jamboree is a new and exciting cultural addition to this year’s festival This global spectacular, brought to you in a day-long programme of concerts, presents an international array of jazz styles and musicians, ranging from Tom Gwyther’s cool, sophisticated European Jazz fusion to South African Township Jazz with the rhythms and beats of the dark continent and the wonderfully lyrical melodies and harmonies of the Indian sub Continent.

aving sold out to massive audiences across the world, internationally acclaimed Indian clarinettist Arun Ghosh brings his Indo Jazz Sextet to the festival playing original music of South Asian origin with a contemporary jazz attitude, rocking urban beats and the passion of punk. Using the spirit and language of jazz, his music is full of timeless melodies that give birth to soaring improvisations, driven by a heady mix of dub-reggae bass, tabla trickery and ferocious drum explosions.
