Serving as the President and Chairman of Ferndown Chamber of Commerce, I am honoured to be working with an enthusiastic committee dedicated to keeping our wonderful town moving forward and to put it back on the map!

he Chamber’s membership,

made up of local businesses and organisations, is growing all the time and we are continually striving to bring more people in to use all the facilities and services Ferndown has to offer.

It’s important for the Chamber to continue to build on the strong community spirit that exists within the town and surrounding areas; to encourage residents to keep shopping local, and to use their local businesses. To help with this, the Chamber has been arranging in conjunction with the Ferndown Town Council and other local organisations, events such as the pram race. It was such a huge success last year, we’re doing it all again! The week-long event (Ferndown Festival) is being supported by local pubs and restaurants, which will be having themed nights with great offers. The Pram Race is on 21 June and the grand finale, a new event for this year, will be a Fete on the Fields at KGV on 28 June.

We plan to hold more events throughout the year and you can keep in touch with what’s going on at www.ferndownchamber.org.uk where you can also browse the businesses in the town, and follow the Chamber on Facebook and Twitter. We hope to encourage a regular market to Ferndown and this is one of the many things the Chamber along with Ferndown Town Council are currently working on for you. I feel so lucky to live and work in Ferndown and I’m sure you do too. With everyone’s support: business and residents alike, we can keep our town happy, buzzing and a fruitful place to live and run successful businesses.   Enjoy all the fun that the Ferndown Festival promises to bring. It will be bigger and better than last year, and next year hopefully bigger still. We still have lots to do and we welcome your support and any suggestions you have.

The Barrington Theatre is hosting its third annual Strawberry Fayre when the entire building will be taken up with an amazing event that even the British weather can’t dampen. This not to be missed event will be held the week before the Ferndown Festival begins. The Strawberry Fayre is being run by the Barrington’s very own volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone enjoys a more family friendly day with contributions from Goadsby Estate Agents, Ferndown. The traditional Prince and Princess Strawberry have been nominated from Oakhurst First School after submitting entries to a Strawberry Poem competition judged by a panel of five, which included Goadsby’s Branch Manager Neal Wilson, the Barrington’s new General Manager Andrew Bryant and representatives from the Barrington’s volunteers. These winning entries can now be seen in the Barrington on the new community notice board.

The Prince and Princess will be crowned by the new Town Mayor at 10.30am. The Theatre hall will be playing host to a full indoor market with a whole range of fantastic crafts, cards, and things of interest to buy. There will be a Strawberry Tea Room serving a delicious range of home-made cakes and cream teas at great prices. Children are always welcome and not only will they have their own pay-and-play indoor area, but will receive a free lollipop on the door. There’s a sweet shop, a book shop, an art class experience and gallery, entertainment... in fact there is so much going on, you will need to come in an have a look - all just for 50p donation on the door.

The proceeds of the donations will all go directly to the Ferndown Communtiy Association, the registered charity that runs and funds the Theatre.

Welcome to wn Festival Ferndo week Starting with Pram Race Day on 21st June, followed by a week of special offers in local restaurants and finishing with the Fete on the Fields on 28th June

he whole week has been designed to fill Ferndown centre and the King George V playing fields with local people enjoying themselves, raising money for charities and enhancing life in Ferndown. Three committees have been formed to organise the events and the time given by all the volunteers has been amazing Like last year, the Pram Race will start at the Old Thatch Pub at 1pm and continue along Wimborne Road to the Pure Drop. Here the teams will have to pit stop prior to setting off again along Wimborne Road. There will be a second pit stop at Crowning Glory hairdressers, where the babies will get a hairdo before racers turn into Victoria Road. The third pit stop will be at the start of Victoria Road for ‘refuelling’. Shortly after, there will be a surprise pit stop run by the Barrington Centre and then competitors will proceed up the hill to the Night Jar pub. Once in the town centre, teams will carry on up Victoria Road to AE

Jolliffe Funeral Directors for another surprise pit stop for the baby before turning into Penny’s Walk. A final pit stop at the Barrington Centre will be required before competitors race to the finish line at the White Heather car park. Teams have been encouraged to wear fancy dress and have to abide by various rules, but most of all have some fun! It’s a great spectator event and those not taking part are encouraged to line the route to cheer the teams on their way. Any loose change can be donated into official charity buckets carried by the teams. On Pram Race day there will be market stalls, entertainment and charity stands in Victoria Road and after the race Parc Ferme and presentations will be held in the Barrington Theatre along with a mini beer festival. There are many sponsors and people that need to be thanked and it has been a privilege to be associated with people who volunteer and give their time for the benefit of others. I hope these events help bring the fun into Ferndown and everyone enjoys themselves.

Pram Race Rules Each team must consist of a maximum of four “pushers or runners” and a baby, who must be human and over the age of 18. The runner can switch with a team mate at any stage along the course; not the “baby” who must remain in situ during the race and at all the Pub Pit Stops but must get out to fulfill tasks at non pub pit stops. Babies must also drink their designated drink at each pub pit stop. A pint must be a beer or fruit based drink. Teams are encouraged to wear fancy dress. Runners and babies must have a pint (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) at each Pub Pit Stop and will have a card, issued at the start, stamped by the Marshal officiating at each pub and forfeit station (non pub pit stops) to indicate that the team has satisfactorily consumed their drinks and completed the forfeit. The baby will also be required to undertake four tasks or forfeits along the route when he/she will be allowed to leave the pram. 1.

The teams can only move onto the next pub or forfeit station once their card has been stamped. The race cards will then be handed to the Marshal at the finish, at which time the team’s time will be recorded. A team will be deemed to have finished the event when racers have crossed the official finish line at the White Heather. The team finishing first with its card fully stamped will be the winner. The Race Marshals will decide whether the teams have completed the event in accordance with the rules. Their decision is final. The course shall start at The Old Thatch and progress via, The Pure Drop, The Night Jar, The Barrington Theatre Bar and The White Heather. Finishing at The White Heather car park. The distance is 2.3 miles. No deviation is permitted ALL ENTRANTS must be over the age of 18 years at the entry day 21st June 2014 NO competitor shall deliberately hinder or impede the progress of any other competitor At the Pubs and for the entire duration / length of the course the person sitting in the pram “baby” must remain in situ and the team will either be disqualified or suffer a 30 second time penalty if places are changed. The baby will only be allowed to vacate the pram at specified forfeit stations. All the team and the “baby” must drink a pint at each Pub Pit stop. Undue spillage will incur disqualification or a 30 second time penalty as will unfinished drinks.

All PRAMS and ENTRANTS shall be subject to scrutiny. Pram design, the chassis, will not be restricted excepting the basis/ chassis must follow an original pram base/design and include two fixed axles and FOUR WHEELS. No form of propulsion and or steering (other than pushing) can be built or attached. No motor or mechanically propelled vehicles will qualify eg bicycles. A pram is any pedestrian propelled vehicle deemed safe by the organisers Prams shall be no higher than ten feet tall and no wider than 4’8”. If prams are wider than 4’8” they will have to be manually lifted over a concrete bollard between Penny’s Walk and the White Heather Car Park. ENTRIES will be accepted up to 12 noon on Thursday 19th June 2014. The number of starters may be limited, in the interests of safety. THE ENTRY FEE is a donation of £15.00 per team member, including the baby, which includes the cost of 3 “Drinks Vouchers” for all team members. Additional donations are most welcome. Teams are actively encouraged to represent PUBS, CLUBS, GROUPS, societies etc. ALL COMPETITORS, ENTRANTS, PARTICIPANTS, enter at their own insurance or risk and NO LIABILITY of any kind is or will be accepted by the organising committee, nor its officials, helper’s assistants or any connections thereof, for any accident, incident, and occurrence or for any liability or damages, of any kind, however arising out of the event, before, during or after. ALL ENTRANTS confirm by / on entry that they are fit enough to take part and complete a course of at least 3 miles and drink 3 pints of beer. If they are in any doubt, they should not enter unless they have sought MEDICAL ADVICE from a medical practitioner i.e. a medical doctor. The event organisers strongly recommend that team members/ competitors pad up well and that the ‘baby’ wears a protective helmet along with the runners. Please note that the race organisers or anyone associated with the race cannot take responsibility for any personal injury or any accident. ALL ENTRANTS CONFIRM that they have read, understood and accepted the rules and risks and will comply with any reasonable request of any Police Officer, Race Official/ Marshal, especially in the interests of the safety of themselves, another competitor, any spectator or Official. In accordance with Ferndown Town Council terms of licence for a street collection permit, NO OTHER PARTY may lawfully collect any monies for or on behalf of any cause other than a properly Authorised collector of / on behalf of Ferndown PRAM RACE COMMITTEE the Licence holder. Any monies collected by any entrant participating in the pram race or spectator must pass all monies collected to a member of the Pram race committee who will distribute all monies at their discretion to the nominated charities. The Pram Race Committee’s decision in all matters is final.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES Prizes: Each entry will be judged by the Mayor & Head Marshal at the Start and prizes will be awarded for the following categories: • • • • • • •

Charity: Teams entering the Ferndown Pram Race are encouraged to raise funds for a charity of their choice. All sponsorship and monies collected in buckets on the day will be donated to the charity selected by each team. The team which achieves the highest fundraising total will receive a ‘financial contribution’ from the Pram Race Committee which will be donated to their chosen charity. The Pram Race Committee will require details of the charity selected and the total raised from every team after the event. Teams will need to obtain fundraising materials such as sponsor forms etc direct from their chosen charity. They will also need a charity logo sticker for their collecting bucket. Teams are encouraged to open on-line fundraising pages on JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving to maximise their fundraising.

The Start: The Old Thatch At the start, Team Captains will register their teams; collect a team number, “Drinks Vouchers” for the team’s drinks at each pub and a collecting bucket. They will then be directed towards the start line, passing en route, the Mayor who will judge the entry, and the Scrutineers who will ensure that the ‘pram’ and racers are safe to race. Once they have completed this process. Teams entering the Fastest Pram event will start first with other teams starting behind in groups in order to stagger the flow of runners through the town. A photographer will also be present to take team photos available for sale on-line after the event.

Along the Route: Teams are encouraged to collect as much money as they can in their buckets from spectators along the route. Apart from those chasing the prize for the Fastest Pram, this is not a timed race although teams should ensure that they progress quickly enough to reach the finish before the roads are reopened. Teams that have not arrived in Victoria Road by 2pm will be sent straight to the finish and will not be allowed to continue the race. Runners will exchange the appropriate “Drinks Vouchers” at each pub for their chosen drink (not necessarily alcoholic). Participants drinking alcohol are reminded to do so responsibly.

The Finish: The White Heather The finish will be at the White Heather car park and prize giving will take place at the Barrington Theatre after the event. Road Closure: The course will be closed to traffic from 1pm but will reopen behind the last placed team as it completes the route. This means that racers leaving at the finish to return to home or to the centre of the Village must be aware that the roads are open to traffic and that they walk in the road at their own risk.

The event will be held on the King George V Fields in Ferndown and will be raising much needed funds for the KGV Charity, which is responsible for the upkeep of the skatepark, childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s play park, bowling green, tennis courts and football pitches.
