Ferndown has brought home not one, but three coveted awards from the 2014 South and South East in Bloom competition. Ferndown Town Council, in association with Ferndown in Bloom, are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the coveted Silver Gilt award in the 2014 South and South East in Bloom competition. The judges, pictured bottom right, enjoying tea in the beautiful garden of Councillor Lyn Ovens following the judging, were accompanied along their route by the Town Clerk, Vanessa Ricketts and Councillor Jean Read, Chairman of Ferndown in Bloom. The route began at the King George’s Fields where the judges were impressed with the wonderful bowls club and surrounding floral displays. They met volunteers of the Royal British Legion on route and appreciated the Memorial Gardens of both KGV and the RBL. The town centre planting was in full bloom and they enjoyed the bright floral displays before heading off to Homelands House where they met members of the Helping Hands Gardening Club. So impressed were the judges with the beautiful gardens at Homelands House that they awarded them a Level 4 ‘Thriving’, It’s your Neighbourhood, special community award. From Homelands House the judges then visited Ford Lane to see the community orchard and the work the Town Council had undertaken to provide the new recreational facilities. Slop Bog was the next destination where judges met with Bog Guardians Martin Warner and David Lock. A brief stop at Harmont Woods to enjoy the nature conservation area was next before finally arriving at Longham Allotments where the
judges were met by the Chairman of the Ferndown Allotments Association, Richard Dean. The judges were impressed with the standard of the facilities and individual allotments especially as they have only been functional and under the Town Council’s control for the past two years. We were, therefore, delighted to find that Longham Allotments had also been awarded a Level 3 ‘Developing’, It’s Your Neighbourhood special community award. The South and South East in Bloom award ceremony was held in Brighton in September and Councillor Mrs Jean Read was delighted to receive all 3 awards on behalf of Ferndown and its residents (front cover). Jean then had the pleasure of presenting the awards to the worthy winners. Keith Wilcox, Head Groundsman of KGV and lead gardener for FTC received the Silver Gilt award from Jean and said, “I’m delighted that the hard work of our team has received this wonderful recognition. It would not have been possible without Adrian Lewis, Town Lengthsman and groundsmen Alan Bradford and Eric Linge.”

Autumn Opening Hours at KGV Fields and a new barrier The evenings are closing in and, as per every year, the opening hours for King George’s Fields has reverted to autumn times. As from 1 October the gates will be open: Monday – Thursday 8.00am – 4.30pm Fridays 8.00am – 4.00pm Saturday and Sunday 8.00am – 5.00pm Any cars remaining in the Charity’s car park after closing time will be locked in and will not be able to be removed until the following morning. Please may we also take this opportunity to politely remind residents that the Charity’s car parking spaces
within the gates is for those people using the facilities at King George’s Fields. People visiting the Lower and Middle Schools should park outside the gates to avoid being locked in after closing. Pedestrian access to the fields will remain open 24 hours for those wishing to attend the evening sessions at Ferndown Tennis Club or merely walking the fields. This summer we also installed an additional barrier behind the gates which only allows the gates to be opened a single car width. This was installed after 6 attempted unlawful incursions by Gypsies and Travellers. The barrier will remain down during the winter but will be in use again from April next year. Please exercise caution when entering the gates when the barrier is in use.
We’re thinking about spring already! Do you remember how wonderful the town looked in spring this year? A host of golden daffodils lined our main roads. These had been planted by the good volunteers of Ferndown in Bloom lead by their Chairman, Councillor Jean Read. On Saturday 26 October Jean will be out again planting even more bulbs and would like as many helpers as possible. Please give Jean a call on 01202 875926 if you are able to assist from 10.30am for about an hour. The planting will commence at St Mary’s Church, Church Road. 12

Heatherlands Centre mark WW1 Centenary Something magical happened over the summer at the Heatherlands Centre!
A new art installation, commemorating the Centenary of World War 1 was created by local young people, guided by a professional artist. The project was organised by Tracy Cooper of East Dorset District Council who funded the project and took place in the summer holidays. The entire mural has been updated, having been originally created in 2008; the other walls now feature wildlife images of insects and birds common to the heath.
New FREE weekly Health rides from Ferndown A free weekly volunteer led ride has started from Ferndown Forest Golf Club at Amesyford every Tuesday. These hour long rides are designed to get people back into cycling, to give them an opportunity to undertake a regular form of exercise and the chance to participate in a local social activity.
The rides are free if you have your own bike, but you can also hire a bike if you don’t have your own for only £4. The riders meet outside the Forest Inn next to the golf club at 9.45am for a 10am start. The routes are predominately traffic free and use the paths, bridleways and forest tracks around Ferndown,
Amesyford and West Moors. Most riders stay for a tea or coffee after the ride. So, if you would like to get on a bike, meet new people and go for a leisurely ride come along on a Tuesday morning.

FERNDOWN LIBRARY TO GET A MAKEOVER Ferndown Library will be undergoing a phased programme of works and refurbishment from September 2014 to June 2015
T
he opportunity afforded by the scheduled works (new ceilings and lighting), will be used to give the library a much needed makeover. New carpets, paint and modern shelving will update and improve the interior. In order to minimise the need for a closure period, the work will be phased, starting with the upper floor which will be closed to the public from 15 September 2014. A selection of non-fiction books will be available downstairs and staff will be able to request titles from other libraries for customers. Until late December only a small number of public computers will be available on the ground floor, so customers will be limited to 30 minutes each. When the upper floor re-opens, the long awaited new computers will have been installed. The Ferndown Library team know that the public value their library and will do their utmost to provide their usual comprehensive and friendly service, in a changing and reduced space. For the duration of the works, the popular Knit and Natter Sessions will relocate to the Day Centre. The intention is for Rhyme Time, Story Time and the monthly coffee mornings to continue as usual, although this may have to be reviewed as the works get underway. For up to date information, please contact the library on 01202 874542 or check our website: www.dorsetforyou.com/ferndownlibrary.

Let there be light! At the time of writing work has started on the long awaited tennis court floodlights at King George’s Fields, Ferndown. King George’s Charity, together with Ferndown Tennis Club, were delighted earlier in the summer to be advised that we had been successful in obtaining a grant from Sport England for the floodlights. Orders were placed, designs drawn up and contractors appointed. The work commenced on 29 September with a promise of completion on 3 October. Unfortunately we have been sorely let down by our electricity supplier who, having promised installation of the meter on 2 October, has now advised us of a delay of up to 4 weeks. It is anticipated that with no small amount of nagging, this delay can be reduced and I hope that by the time you are reading this we will have light! Chris Biddle, Professional Tennis Coach at Ferndown Tennis Club said, “The floodlights have been under discussion for at least the last 15 years and it’s wonderful to see them finally installed. Whilst the slight delay is disappointing I am looking forward to being able to take evening coaching sessions, and for our club and members of the public to be able to play in the evenings throughout the winter”. For more information about Ferndown Tennis Club or coaching sessions, please contact Chris on 07930 569342. Thanks to Kay Browning for the brilliant photos. 20

Friendly advice from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service
GETTING READY FOR AUTUMN
T
he seasons move on and after a great summer, autumn is coming. This is the perfect opportunity for us to remind you about the dangers you can face in your home as the weather turns colder. A working smoke alarm is one of the most important things you can own. It will provide you with an early warning to a fire, giving you time to escape. If you own one, your half way there – just make sure you test it once a week and replace the batteries when necessary. We usually see an increase in chimney fires over the autumn period. Chimney fires are preventable if the right precautions are taken. Having your chimney swept is vital. The function of sweeping the flue/chimney is to remove the deposits that build up. By sweeping the flue/chimney it ensures that there is a clear and safe passage for the safe exit of combustion products, which are caused by the burning process. This lessens the chances of the chimney catching fire. If you are putting the fire or the woodburner on, please consider a guard and how far away combustible materials are, like clothes. Don’t forget to make sure all the embers are under control and put out properly when you go to bed! As the evenings draw in, candles are also great to create an atmosphere and add some extra light – just don’t leave them unattended! Make sure you put them out before you go to bed and you use an appropriate base for them, like a plate.
24
Cooking has been the cause of over 50% of accidental fires in the home that we have attended over the last year (2012/13). When cooking, don’t be distracted and please don’t leave anything unattended. If you have to leave the kitchen, think about turning off the hob or using a timer – that way cooking won’t be forgotten about! Finally, have you received a home safety check from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service? We provide them free of charge and we will give you bespoke home safety advice designed around you and your home such as escape routes, cooking, electrics and much much more. An hour of your time could save your life and if it’s appropriate our staff will fit free smoke alarms too. To sign up call 01305 252600 or check our website www.dorsetfire.gov.uk We’ll be attending flu clinics across Dorset this autumn, where you can also sign up for a FREE Home Safety Check.

Cedar Vets re-opens in Ferndown Cedar Veterinary Group is delighted to again be able to offer their well-established clientele the service and care which has made them successful in the area for 20 years. And if pets need extra care, the group’s Ringwood hospital has facilities for all other procedures, along with staff who work all night giving round the clock care.
