The Countess of Wessex visits the Heatherlands Estate East Dorset District Council Chairman, Steve Lugg, Escort Cathy Lugg and current Mayor of Ferndown Julie Robinson were amongst those whom welcomed Sophie, Countess of Wessex to the Heatherlands Centre and Hopscotch Pre-school on Wednesday 23rd September. The Countess landed by helicopter on the town council’s Ford Lane Recreation Ground before being enchanted by the pupils at the pre-school, and then enjoying a Jitsu demonstration. She followed this by having lunch with volunteers before Cllr Steve Lugg thanked her for the visit, and the Countess unveiled a plaque to commemorate her time at the Centre.

Fast response moves a step closer

FOR THE FERNDOWN COMMUNITY The Royal British Legion Club in Ferndown launched its latest Community project with the installation of a community Defibrillator back in June. More recently on 2nd September a defibrillator awareness training course was extremely well attended by members of the local community. The training was run in conjunction with local Community Heartbeat Trust representative Dave Laut

T

he organiser Brian Wells from the Legion Club said, "We wanted to get a wider community interest and understanding of what to do and how to save a life. Dave was excellent with his simple explanation of what was required. We were also able to provide guidance to other clubs and associations who were considering purchasing units from the Community Heartbeat Trust or other organisations. We can run another future event for those who missed out today if the residents within the community contact us with their details. Our sincere thanks to the Heartbeat Charity for their professional follow through and delivery of our equipment and training." In addition to seeing the defibrillator in action, attendees also had the opportunity to brush up on their first response emergency first aid skills. June Jones, who attended the seminar commented, “What a very well organised and informative session this was. It’s good to have had a reminder about CPR and to see how it is linked to using the defibrillator.” Brian Wells from the Club commented "We have been working with a number of organisations to help fund this very worthwhile community project. We hope it never has to be used; however, the defibrillator when used in good time can aid and improve the chances

Councillor John Wilson presenting a cheque from his DCC fund to Brian Wells of RBL Ferndown to help with the project funding.

of recovery from a cardiac arrest from just 3% to over 60%. This has to be good for the community. On behalf of the Club may I say we are indebted to our contributors who helped us achieve our funding target for the purchase of this unit from the Community Heartbeat Trust. A particular thanks must go to Councillors Steve Lugg, John Wilson, Ferndown & Wimborne Lions, Ferndown Royal Naval Association, R.E.M.E, Fleet Air Arm, RBL Club committee, Ferndown Strollers Cricket Club and Johnson Electrical Ferndown. Without their help, this project would never have been completed. We all owe them a very big “thank you". The defibrillator is a small battery powered unit that when

used can help cardiac arrest suffers recover and provide a vital medical service to those in need. The use of this particular unit is video and voice led, which means that any person can use it to save lives. The South West Ambulance Authority have a list of all defibrillators locations for community use and when you call 999 you will be directed to the nearest unit if within a reasonable distance. Following a cardiac arrest the chance of survival decreases by 23% per minute. It is therefore very important medical treatment starts as soon as possible. The UK Resuscitation Council suggests an AED should be available wherever medical treatment is more than 5 minutes away. In practical terms this means the whole of the UK.

ollowing last year’s successful Christmas lights switch-on in Ferndown, the town’s Chamber of Commerce is planning another magical programme of street entertainment. The event will make the town sparkle on 28 November. From midday, acts will include Gugge 2000 in their bright bumblebee colours playing lively Guggenmusik,

18

and solo artist Jenny Oag. There will be Christmas carols by Studio One, stalls and amusements and Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without mince pies and mulled wine, which will be available from the Chamber’s stall. Chamber members will also be selling raffle tickets for a fabulous Christmas hamper. As luck would have it, Santa will be in Ferndown on the same day! The Barrington Theatre manager Andy Bryant has promised to pull out all the stops to provide Father Christmas with a fabulous grotto where he can meet the children. And as the evening draws in at around 5pm, the Christmas tree lights will be switched on to ensure the Ferndown sparkle continues into the night.

Ferndown & District Historical Society The society was formed in August 1987 with the purpose of recording and preserving the history of Ferndown. Since then we have collected records and artefacts covering many aspects of the town’s history and these are held at The Priest’s House Museum in Wimborne

H

owever, as a Historical Society, we do not focus solely on local history, but offer to our members and visitors, talks by speakers who cover a wide range of topics with a historical content. These talks are designed to enlighten and entertain. Indeed, in terms of relatively local interest, this year we have already enjoyed talks on Hengistbury Head, Ringwood’s Railways and Dorset Victoria Crosses. On a wider note a retired Beefeater gave The Historical Society an insight into the history

of the Tower of London. Over the next few months they look forward to hearing about, among others, Music at the Cinema 1927-1945; Thomas Hardy’s Dorset and The Cerne Giant. These are a flavour of the subjects on offer, but you are welcome to peruse the full programme which is displayed in the Historical Society’s cabinet in The Barrington Centre. The cabinet also houses a small selection of photographs of Ferndown from days gone by and this display is changed from time

to time, so is well worth a look. Ferndown and District meets on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30pm in the Conference Room of the Barrington Centre. Membership costs only £13 per person for the year and this covers admission to all of the meetings throughout the year, including tea/coffee and biscuits during the interval, as well as a news sheet which is issued twice yearly. Nonmembers are welcome to attend for an admission fee of £2, which includes the refreshments.

Ferndown in Bloom’s

WINNING BUNCH

Report by Janine Pulford, mags4dorset

The winners of Ferndown in Bloom 2015, sponsored by Haskins Garden Centres, were presented with their awards on 23 September at Haskins in Ferndown Barrie and Sheila Smith of Mayfield Close won the Best Front Garden and received the prestigious shield and £100 gift card from Haskins. Judges led by Cllr Lyn Ovens gave the Smiths’ garden the winning score for its brilliant use of colour and features. The garden also won the competition two years ago, so Ferndown In Bloom’s chairman Jean Read was delighted to revisit and congratulate the winners with Matt Hill from Haskins. The formal presentation evening took place at Haskins Restaurant on 23 September.

Tallest sunflower

This year’s competition, sponsored jointly by Haskins Garden Centre at Longham and mags4dorset, produced some incredible entries. Some were spindly, some were flower heavy and some were like Jack’s beanstalk and disappeared into the sky. The winning entry measured a massive 13’ 8” and was nurtured by Val Briggs and her husband Doug. “It’s the second time we’ve entered and we really watered the sunflowers well and fed them. We are learning more as we go along,” said Val. She and Doug are passionate about their garden, so it’s not surprising that Val has taken four prizes in this year’s Ferndown in Bloom competition. The next tallest sunflower was grown by Malcolm Ovens. His reached 11’ 9” and a special mention must go to Ron Copp who lost his leg 18 months ago, but took up the challenge to grow the tallest sunflower. His plants reached for the sky, but didn’t meet the lofty heights of the winning contender. Had their been a prize for the biggest sunflower heads, it would have gone to Paula Fleckney from West Moors who grew three head-and-foliage-heavy monsters.

GREAT NEWS FOR UDDENS AND CANNON HILL

2

015 had been a busy year for the Ringwood team of The Forestry Commission. They tackled rhododendrons along Udden’s Drive that had been taking over from the native woodland plants and trees for quite a few years! Not only does the invasive poisonous plant threaten the native flora and fauna, it was a regular hideout for anti-social behaviour and attracted large volumes of fly-tipped waste. Considerable staff, contractor and volunteers’ time had been spent clearing up the beautiful natural resource for the local community to enjoy. The Ringwood team engaged with the police community support officer for the beat area in an attempt to step up patrols, clamp down, and catch those responsible for the inappropriate activities! The Ringwood team will be planting supplementary hazel and will promote natural regeneration of the existing trees. In time this will encourage much-loved mammals like dormice to create their homes in this improved environment. The area is also home to some shy reptiles such as the rare smooth snake and sand lizard; the recent works bring great benefits in terms of forest edge habitat.

28

In addition to the large scale rhododendron removal, the Ringwood team have been working closely with the friends of Uddens and Cannon Hill. Working together in collaboration they have given access points to the forest some good old TLC by installing new signs, along with the friends’ information boards as part of the bid to encourage and welcome visitors to the plantations. We need members of the public to keep their eyes open for any criminal activity such as fly-tipping and littering. Do not put yourself in danger, just call 999 and report to the police or 101 if it is a non-emergency.
