FERNDOWN: PART OF A GREATER BOURNEMOUTH OR DORSET UNITARY, OR TO STAY AS EAST DORSET?

Your Views Are Needed!

F

erndown Town Council currently has no official policy on the future local governance of East Dorset, but as the largest settlement ‘we’ surely have a right to a view? Residents are asked to think about their preference, and whether they should be offered a referendum, before local government changes are made. If you have a view, let your councillors know, and write to the Leader of EDDC to express your view. If we stay silent, Ferndown ‘will for sure, be done to’, whatever the decision.

Do you prefer local or more remote and centralised government?

It’s your democracy, your choice Send your views to: Councillor Spencer Flower East Dorset District Council, Furzehill, Wimborne, BH21 4HN or email: cllr.sflower@eastdorsetdc.gov.uk

Cadets celebrate achievements Cadets of 2358 (Ferndown) Squadron spent the evening of 14th March celebrating their achievements throughout the year of 2015. During the Squadron’s annual presentation evening, the cadets efforts were recognised by Wing Commander Toth, OC Dorset & Wiltshire Wing ATC. During the evening, special guests and parents were enthralled

with personal accounts of activities that the cadets themselves had taken part in. Cadet Dennis and Cpl Brown delivered an exciting presentation on participating in regional sports. Cpl Brown spoke about his experiences during annual camp, Cpl Way spoke about 2358

(Ferndown) Squadron’s gruelling Section Commanders course and finally FS Payne delivered an excellent presentation on the Qualified Aerospace Instructors course. The Newly Appointed Office Commanding, Pilot Officer Kevin Haywood took great pleasure in awarding the Cadets the certificates throughout the evening, passing the honour of handing over the

awards to OC Wing. And of all the awards the two most sought after, best Cadet 2015 was awarded to Cadet Fitzgerald and the best NCO 2015 was awarded to Cadet Flight sergeant Conner. The Cadets should be extremely proud of themselves for their continued efforts and ongoing success, Officer Commanding 2358 looks forward to next year for more of the same.

Ricketts and the EDDC officers, and the volunteers including my wife who baked for 12 hours!” Amongst the numerous stands was the Dogs Trust and a spokesperson said, “It is one of the best events of its kind that we have attended.” Due to its success, a spring dog-focused event is likely to become an annual calendar fixture in Ferndown.

The combined event between Ferndown Town Council (trustees of King George V Fields charity) and East Dorset District Council (EDDC) was coordinated by Rachel Taylor and raised more than £400 for local charities.

“The glorious weather on Good Friday surely helped, but to see more than 200 dogs and their owners on King George V playing field in Ferndown was a wonderful sight,” said the Chairman of East Dorset District Council (EDDC), Cllr Steve Lugg who was instrumental in organising the event. As well as entering their pets in a fun dog show, owners were also able to take up the offer of free microchipping by East Dorset District Council’s dog warden. Legislation now makes it compulsory to have all dogs over eight weeks old in England microchipped. Over 60 dogs queued up to be microchipped during the afternoon whilst the fun dog show, run by the local Staffie Rescue, attracted 180 entries. Pampurred Pets sponsored the prizes. Counciller Lugg added, “A great afternoon was had by all, even the burger van sold out. There were so many local people all pulling together to create good times for everyone. I am especially indebted to Steve

Good Neighbour service The Good Neighbour service in Ferndown, West Parley and West Moors was launched in December 2014. The scheme has been very successful, but the coordinator, John Muggleton, is keen for older people living in the area who haven’t heard of the service to know about the help that can be provided. John said, “If you are unable to do those small, simple tasks and do not have the support of family and friends, then the local Good Neighbour service can help you. “Do you need a light bulb changed, your batteries in your remote control replaced or your TV reprogrammed? Maybe you have some furniture that you need moving or some small item taken to the tip? Do you need your curtains taken down to enable you to wash them? “These are just a few examples of the jobs we can do. We will not always be able to help, but we will do our best.” The Good Neighbour scheme also offers a befriending service. Do you need help of this type, or something similar? If so call 01202 834034. Ring any time during the day, seven days a week. Your call will be answered by a person and someone will get back to you the next working day. Depending on the job, a volunteer could be with you within 48 hours. A small donation will be requested when the job is complete to cover expenses. The Good Neighbour service is dependent on volunteers to deliver the service and more people are encouraged to join. All volunteers are trained and DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked. They are also covered by public liability insurance. If you have some spare time during the day and are interested in becoming a volunteer, or you want further information, please ring Dawn Jones POPP (Partnership of Older People’s Programme) champion on 07825 206052. A deputy coordinator and treasurer are also required. John adds: “The volunteers who have been with us from the beginning say they love volunteering and get so much satisfaction in helping others. They are putting something back into the community.” Similar services are also run in Wimborne and Corfe Mullen. For more information ring Sue Reynolds POPP champion for Wimborne on 07760 769431

Summer Opening Hours at KGV Fields The evenings are lighter and, as per every year, the opening hours for King Georges Fields will revert to summer times from 1st April. Please note that due to the Charity’s risk of traveller incursion we will be operating the width restriction bollard:

Monday – Sunday 8am – 8pm in April (8.30pm May and 9pm June and July)

Any cars remaining in the Charity’s car park after closing time will be locked in and will not be able to be removed until the following morning. Please may we also take this opportunity to politely remind residents that the Charity’s car parking spaces within the gates are for those people using the facilities at King Georges fields. People visiting the Lower and Middle Schools for evening activities should park outside the gates to avoid being locked in after closing. Pedestrian access to the fields will remain open 24 hours for those wishing to attend the evening sessions at Ferndown Tennis Club or merely walking the fields.

FERNDOWN FRIDAY MARKET

in full swing Report by Janine Pulford

Photos by MAGS4DORSET

SOUTHERN MARKET TRADERS’ GREEN AND WHITE GAZEBOS ARE NOW A REGULAR SIGHT IN FERNDOWN EVERY FRIDAY. SO FAR THE STALLS HAVE BEEN LINING VICTORIA ROAD, BUT THAT SHOULD CHANGE SHORTLY. Organised by Ferndown Chamber of Commerce and Ferndown Town Council, the market was originally planned to go ahead in Penny’s Walk and according to the council and the president of the

chamber, James Edgar, it should switch location within the next few weeks when “agreements are finalised with the landowners.” James added, “In general the market has been very well received by Thomas, Rebecca and Alexander

the local businesses and positively welcomed by the shoppers.” Shoppers Jenny and Claire from Ferndown said, “We came to Ferndown to have a coffee and look round the market.” Linda from West Parley said, “It seems good. It should bring more revenue to the town. It’s nice to see some clothes for sale in Ferndown.” Her children Thomas, Alexander (both 9) and Rebecca (aged 10) were busy trying on hats in the Easter holiday and Thomas said, “I think everyone should come and have a look.” James Edgar added: “This is a very positive time for Ferndown. It’s really amazing to be able to say that Friday is no longer just the end of the week, but it’s now market day in Jenny and Claire Ferndown!”
