New Mayor for Ferndown 2015/16 Congratulations to Councillor Mrs Julie Robinson who was unanimously elected as Town Mayor for the 2015/2016 Municipal Year at the Annual Council Meeting on 19 May 2015 Julie is pictured above with her husband David. For her official Mayoral duties she will be escorted either by her husband or by her good friend Jacqueline Moss depending on the occasion.
Julie comments:
“I am delighted and honoured to be elected as Mayor and I am looking forward to representing Ferndown for the next year. My hope has always been for the community and outside bodies to work together and for local authorities to listen and take notice of what the community really want, not what they think we need! I’m looking to seeing real progress this year on putting into practice our Town Plan and the plans for renewal of the Town Centre.”
Julie has been a resident of Ferndown since 1986. She served on the Heatherlands Community Association for 8 years and held the role of Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for 12 years. She currently works closely with Synergy Housing and is Chairman of the panel which covers the whole of Ferndown including the Heatherlands Estate. She became a Town Councillor in 2011 and was re-elected in May 2015 and elected as a District Councillor for Ferndown Central Ward. Julie is also a staunch supporter of providing affordable and social housing. She hopes to encourage the town’s small businesses and encourage others to come to the area. She has chosen Ferndown Stroke Club as her charity for the year as she has personal interest in helping stroke survivors and their families.

ormer Town Mayor Cllr Mike Parkes and the Chairman of the Barrington Centre, Chris Allen, signed the lease for the three rooms which form the new offices. The ceremony was watched by town council staff who have have been in the new premises since 8 April. Enquiries at the new offices have trebled compared to when the council was based at King George V Pavilion. Town Clerk Vanessa Ricketts said: “The town council is in a far better place to serve the residents and we can provide a better service for them. It is important that democracy is seen in action.” Cllr Mike Parkes added: “It is wonderful to have the council in the centre of the town, something which I have wanted to achieve for the 17 years I have been a councillor. Chris Allen explained: “The Barrington Centre is for the community so it is the perfect place for the town council. I am delighted they are now here.” Council meetings will be held in the conference room at the Barrington where the town crest is displayed as a sign of civic pride.

Former Ferndown town clerk dies Michael Owen, who spent many years as town clerk of Ferndown Town Council died aged 86 on 19 May 2015. His funeral took place on 29 June. Past mayor Mick Arnold MBE, his wife Jean and ex councillor and past mayor Peter Gutteridge attended the service held at St John’s Church, Boxmoor in Hemel Hempstead. 12
After the cremation and church service, they met Michael’s wife Doris and other members of the family. Michael’s ashes will be placed within the grounds of St John’s Church and recorded in a book of remembrance at the church. The photograph shows Doris with her friends from Ferndown.
“A big thank-you to all those who took part, helped in staging, and the Town Mayor of Ferndown for starting, the inaugural Ferndown 10k run which took place on Saturday 20th June. The event attracted some 65 runners and proved a great success despite a person or persons unknown removing a large number of direction posts along the route. Due to the event’s success there will be further runs organised with the proceeds again going to the ‘King George V Playing Fields’ Charity.”

How do you fancy an Allotment?
H
ave you got what it takes to overcome the relentless assault of nature and transform a patch of bare earth into an oasis of green, bursting with luscious fruits and packed with delicious vegetables? Running an allotment takes toil and sweat but most gardeners manage to avoid blood and tears! To succeed you do need time, patience and effort. But if you have enough of these to spare, allotment gardening can be very rewarding indeed. Healthy exercise, fresh air, fruit and veg are just the start.
LONGHAM ALLOTMENT GARDENS – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
Three of our sixty-six plots are now vacant and we are looking for keen gardeners to bring them into cultivation. Two are small plots made recently by splitting up a larger one. The third is a medium sized plot which comes complete with a shed and water collection system left by the last gardener. Other plots become free from time to time as tenants move on. So even if you can’t take a plot right away, you might like to join our waiting list.
•
Application forms If you think you’ve got what it takes, why not download a form from our website or pop in to our new offices at the Barrington Centre? You can find out more about the allotments and the FAA at www.ferndown.gov.uk 20
There have been Allotment Gardens at Longham (opposite Bicycle World) for decades past. When the Town Council bought the site in December 2012 there were many large vacant and run-down plots. Over the next fifteen months we made steady improvements and by the official opening in March last year we had •
• • • •
Split up some larger plots to make a range of sizes to meet all needs improved the trackways and made new pathways increased site security created a car-park found enough local Ferndown tenants to bring all uncultivated land into use set aside a community area for use by tenants
Previous and new tenants now make up the active and thriving Ferndown Allotments Association (FAA). With more plot-holders working hard and creatively the whole site began to look well-cared for and the FAA were proud to receive a level 3 “It’s Your Neighbourhood Award” from the Royal Horticultural Society last year. The Council and the FAA are working together through a Working Party of the Council’s Environment Committee to prepare a five year plan to further improve the allotments.

A New Structure to Ferndown Town Council Following the local elections in May, Ferndown Town Council has a new structure. Ferndown is now represented by 17 councillors over 7 wards. This has meant a reduction in the number of members sitting on our committees. Some committees have vacancies as we currently only have 14 council members. We are due to co-opt to the council at our next council meeting on 20 July. A full calendar of meetings is shown on page 25 for the coming year.
