Elliott completes epic journey

Elliott Wright from Verwood completed an epic journey on 3 July, walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for charity.

He walked approximately 25 miles for each of 64 days – a combined total of over three million steps. As he camped the majority of the time, he completed his impressive feat carrying a 15-kilogram backpack, containing everything he needed for his journey.

Elliott began his journey along the north section of the South West Coast Path and, using mainly public footpaths, he travelled through Cheddar and over the Severn Bridge to Offa’s Dyke, through the Peak District and Pennine Way before heading over the Scottish border. From there, he took the West Highland Way to Fort William, before walking through the wilds of the Scottish Highlands to the finishing point at John O’Groats.

Along the way, Elliott took just five rest days and on one of those he climbed Ben Nevis.

“One of the best parts was waking up to beautiful scenery every day. I also met so many kind people who have continued to support me,” said Elliot. “I even met one family who invited me to stay at their house the next week. They discovered I was due to pass near to their home, and I ended up joining in with their Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

“I had to be open to talking to people about what I was doing and it really helped keep me motivated.”

He said the hardest part was the last section. With few real paths and no shops, Elliott had to rely on his compassreading skills and carry extra food, and found himself on reduced rations for a few days.

He has raised more than £4,000 for Mind in the past few months and Elliot said: “It is a charity that resonates with me, and this challenge was a perfect one for me, as I believe that getting outside and pushing myself is best for my mental health.”
