Introduction


Maha Musthafa

Bachelor Of Architecture Born to a family settled in the Middle-East and completing my grades and university in India, I was always fascinated by cultural values and activity pattern of people, and enjoyed coming up with designs majorly inspired by the culture, heritage and art of the country. I aim to contribute to the built and social environment by creating architecture that inspires the imagination and sustains our resources in an innovative and sustainable manner. My times in Manipal University, School of Architecture and Planning has served as a foudation, familiarising with a range of different techniques and approaches to the design process. Following gradutaion I joined Benoy Architects Abu Dhabi as an Architectural intern during the fall of 2013. On showing promise and confidence through my work I was assigned with greater responsibilities and joined the Middle east and Nortn Africa Studio as a key member for the iconic mixed use development project, The walk at JBR. Projects I have worked on over the years have focused not only on domestic scale but also on large scale master plan allowing myself to explore and build upon my own experiences in understanding and representing architectural spaces in all its complexities. Projects based on existing contexts and refurbishment has encouraged me to learn more about the services associated with the building and its surroundings. I have experience through the design process from Concept to Design Development and Site Superversion. Prior to Benoy, I have also worked with Design International in Abu Dhabi and was actively involved in developing and managing small scale projects such as beach front villa and holiday homes. I have also interned with Sorouh Real Estate and Bayati Architects and worked on several private and government projects. The following are collection of chosen architectural work from my experience at Benoy and at my University. It has surely been my great pleasure in putting this portfolio together and I really appreciate your time and interest taken. Thank you

The Bahrain Marina mixed-use development includes 30,000sqm of retail, family entertainment and waterfront dining opportunities, a 200+ berth marina with exclusive luxury members facilities with water embracing views, a 400key, 5* luxury lifestyle hospitality offer with beach, f&b and leisure amenities and a freehold residential tower on the water, creating a new landmark on the Bahrain skyline

Scope: Concept to Schematic

The masterplan embraces cultural links to the adjacent cultural quarter through the creation of public spaces for events and exhibitions, as well as the use of new technologies and concepts for social gathering and integration. Utilisation of sustainable and renewable energy systems will further secure the Bahrain Marina as a forerunner in green technologies within Bahrain. Bahrain Marina is the creation of an authentic urban waterfront district that is envisaged to become a major lifestyle destination for Bahrain, the surrounding region and the global community. It will create a landmark lifestyle attraction connecting the prestigious Bahrain Marina with the people and the heart of Bahrain. We have taken inspiration from our global knowledge where we have looked to reinterpret some of the most iconic shopping destinations (neighbourhoods). These will establish new quarters within a new urban landscape of authentic streets and squares. Design Considerations taken from the Client’s Core Vision that have considered and incorporated into this scheme these are:

THE WALK AT JBR The design aimed at retaining some of the existing character whilst refining it to produce a simpler and more elegant version of itself. The Walk is more about creating an iconic space, making a statement, one which will finance itself by improving the commercial offer and increasing revenue. As the Walk is already success, the project gave the luxury of an increased amount of artistic freedom, and the freedom to create.

The Walk is already popular, however the failing element ď€ CONCEPT REPORT is connectivity to the Podium level, creating a bottleneck along the Walk, leaving the podium areas unfriendly and underused.

If this can be resolved successfully, the balance between upper and lower areas will be more evenly distributed and both spaces will benefit from improved levels of comfort and environment. The redefinition of the podium level in public spaces will provide value to the residents of JBR and the enhancement of the private spaces will provide a place they can enjoy and feel proud.

NORTH PARCEL, FINANCIAL HARBOUR Located off the sparkling water of the Arabian Gulf, Harbour North is set to become the premier destination for Bahrain’s most distinguished social, cultural and professional elite. Harbour North will be characterized as having strong identifiable yet contrasting themes that will tie the scheme to its setting and place while also presenting an iconic and unique expression that will in many ways be new and unique to Bahrain.


TO

ROLE: • Worked closely with Project Architect and Director in the Concept design and production phase of North Parcel and was responsible for developing master plan options, producing sketches, 3D models and diagrams. • Assisted Project Architect in evaluating area, acquiring efficiency and understanding BOH services, public facilities and parking services for the development. • Participitated and handled meeting with landscape architect, F&B Consultants and building services and strategy team to deliver homogeneous and coordinated report. • Upon finalization of the over layout and design strategy, worked on developing architecture style and facade design for Zone 2 Retail and F&B units. • Developed sketch up model and produced autocad drawings for final reports and presentation.

Massing Scale and Proportion

MASTER PLAN - DEVELOMENT STRATEGY The Site forms part of a large masterplan named The Central Park redevelopment. It is located to the south east of Al Safa Road within The Avenue Project and its one of its phased developments. A large Right of Way (ROW) corridor is established, originating from Al Safa Street at Satwa Park in the North -East to the South-West end. ANCHOR

The location provides convenient access for visitors and nearby residents by road or within walking distance from the surrounding residential areas. Furthermore, the site is accessible from the nearby metro station to the south-eastern edge of the wider masterplan.

The Avenue Development establishes an important pedestrian corridor by introducing high end retail entertainment and F&B units on Al Safa Street.

CITY WALK - Avenue Phase 2, DUBAI The development vision is to create a highendpedestrian friendly Retail, F&B and Entertainment destination point within the greater Central Park Masterplan in Dubai. It will position itself as one of the primary shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure destinations in the heart of the city. The Avenue Phase 2 is a landmark project which is strategically located alongside The Avenue (Phase 1) Retail development; the future Dubai Hotel 1 4* - 120 keys Boutique hotel and the Family Entertainment Centre (FEC) developments within The City Walk District.


ROLE: • Involved in design, production and construction phase of the project. • Designed Mosque, theatre square buiding facade, escalator shell, and facade for retail along the Central Courtyard. • Contributed in producing schematic drawings and was responsible for review of all structural steel drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance with design, codes, regulations and other services. • Contributed on site during the construction phase and made relevant mark ups on shops drawings for the contractors. • Also documented defect taken following construction completion and put together snag lists for record and rectification work.

BEACH FRONT VILLA This brief is to create a bespoke design for a typical plot 1000m² villa that is facing the long stretch of the beach. Durrat Al Bahrain Management wants to review and improve the existing villa design as the size and location of this type of villa offers a great opportunity to come up with an attractive and a new real estate product that satisfies the market appetite and meet the current high class demand of resort residence.


ROLE: • Solely developed and presented new design concepts for Beach front villas • Studied existing villa design and prepared comparitive analysis reports • Developed sketches, diagrams, 3D models and relevant architetural drawings for final reports and presentation Newly developed design focused on: • Retaining the earlier proposed and approved design footprint and site limits. • Limiting material and construction technique to previously approved tender package • Developing simple yet elegant design satisfying current market trend and demand. • Creating an open plan layout and maintainig privacy, there by to cater to all kind of people and community.

Existing The existing layout of the villa was restricted much within the centre of the plot, there by creating very tight overall planning without integrating the structure to the surrounding environment. There was a lack of indoor- outdoor interactive spaces and had limited visual link which made the villa less unique from the rest of the beach front villas along the area. Proposed The new design with its fragmented layout aimed at using the verticality of the site to create more enclosed open spaces, courtyard, intimate pool and play area. The strong vertical layout also helped in developing elegant elevation with the use of minimalisitic material. When series of these buildings are developed adjacent to each other, each villa by itself creates its own boundary thereby gaining privacy from the neighboring viila The layout is not only succesfulin in integrating the green space and the building but also brings the strcuture more closer to the most looked at feature of the location - The beach

DESTINATION MALL,RIYADH The Destination, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is positioned next to the financial district in Riyadh. The Destination is set to become a 93,000 sqm high-quality retail mall. The design includes a fashion zone, various international and local retail units and entertainment areas. An external retail strip has been incorporated into the design providing a new and varied shopping experience for the region. A full range of F&B outlets is also offered across the scheme ranging from commercial outlets to boutique dining restaurants.


ROLE: • Worked in a team of four in the concept and schematic phase of the project. • Developed architectural facade, diagrams, presentations and reports during the concept phase. • Schematic phase involved further development of the designed and approved facade, development of detailed section and material study with due respect to project concept and budget. • Also collaborated with interior design team in developing interior design concept and preparing reports.

SHARJAH MIXED-USE MASTERPLAN, UAE Developed the Concept Masterplan for Sharjah Avenue, an exciting mixed-use development, which provides over 2.8 million square metres of accommodation. The masterplan has been split into distinct zones, all focused around a central landscaped area. FINE ARTS AND DESIGN RESEARCH INSTITUTION ABOUT THE PROJECT Location: India Size: 80,000 SQM The design is been developed keeping in mind of the three basic design attitudes concerning the geology, the history and the city, and this helped in shaping the proposal that desires to create a realm of ‘places’ than the abstract geometrical configurations. The scheme has been conceived by a prominent geological feature of the site. The canyon becomes the primary organising element and has been used as a central court around which the academic campus rises. The students and the faculty have a direct access to the preserved and landscaped canyon from their studios, workshops, cafes and the students centre, turning it into a space for a pleasant and stimulating experience. A site level difference towards the west, paves the way for the Hostels to be zoned in there. The auditorium and the more public areas of the exhibition galleries and the administrative offices are planned close to the road end.
