This summer’s graduates will have the best job prospects since the economic crisis began, according to research out today.

Page 20-21

A survey of the country’s 100 top graduate recruiters by High Fliers Research shows a 4.6 per increase in jobs available, compared with the 2.7 per cent rise expected earlier in the year. However, competition for individual jobs remains fierce, with an average of 46 applications for each vacancy this year, compared with 35 before the recession.

Despite public spending cuts, the biggest growth area for jobs remains the public sector – which has increased recruitment by 18.6 per cent with 450 extra jobs. Many of these are a result of the Teach First scheme, which recruits top graduates into inner-city schools. The area showing the biggest drop in vacancies is the media – where vacancies have dropped by more than 50 per cent since 2008 and average salaries have gone down by £2,500 since last year. Over the past four years, starting salaries have been pegged at an average of £29,000 – although in investment banks they have ranged from £37,000 to £49,000.

Jobseeker’s Allowance Changes Planned For Unemployed Jobseekers will to have wait seven days before first claiming Jobseeker's Allowance and may have to sign on every week, under new government plans. Chancellor George Osborne also said those claiming unemployment benefits who did not speak English would have to attend English classes. Jobseekers will also be required to have a CV before claiming benefits. Weekly meetings with Job Centre staff would become mandatory for about half of jobseekers. These were likely to be jobseekers who were deemed not to be doing enough to find a job themselves. Other claimants working hard to find a job will be able to continue attending fortnightly meetings, as is currently required. Currently claimants can begin receiving Jobseeker's Allowance

three days after they become unemployed, but this is to be extended to a week for all claimants. The Treasury says the reforms, being brought in from next April, will deliver £350m in annual savings. But critics said the delay could increase the troubles for families already suffering economic hardship, and may discourage claimants from looking for short-term contracts. The requirement to learn English is being introduced for those whose inability to speak English is a barrier to finding work. Mr Osborne said insisting that jobseekers speak English was "a reasonable requirement in this country". "From now on, if claimants don't speak English, they will have to attend language courses until they do," he told the House of Commons.

Week Of Action To Tackle Waste A multi-cultural area of Sheffield is being targeted in a concerted effort to clean up the local streets. The intensive Week of Action in the Page Hall area beginning July 1st, will educate, involve and support the local community. The City Council will be working closely with their partners, Amey and Veolia Environmental Services on this positive community project. This multi-cultural community presents special challenges and the week will begin with door-to-door visits to talk to residents and advise them on how to dispose of their waste materials properly. Local schools will also be vis-

ited in advance to educate pupils about the benefits of recycling and to encourage them to take an active role in keeping their city clean. The local community and schools will be equipped with litter pickers for a major cleanup of the area on Wednesday (3 July) and larger items will be taken away for recycling or disposal. The week will be completed by a celebration event on Friday (5 July), when representatives of the local community will sign a pledge to continue to keep the area clean and tidy. They will also commit to supporting litter picks and other projects.

Double Paw Print Stamps For Young Borrowers Young library visitors will get a helping paw towards getting rewards for borrowing books over the next four weeks. To celebrate National Bookstart Week, the national charity supported by Bradford Council's Libraries Service, children in the Bookstart Bear Club now receive double paw print stamps.

When a child aged 0-5-years joins one of Bradford Council's libraries, they receive a Bookstart Bear Club passport. Each time they borrow a book or attend a rhyme time or story time, they receive a paw print stamp in their passport. Children can then earn rewards, such as books, bags, DVD loans, swim vouchers

and even a teddy bear if they get a certain number of stamps. From 24 June to 24 July 0-5-yearolds will get double stamps giving them a faster route to rewards and an incentive to get into books. Last year 692 children attended events in Bradford and the district to mark Bookstart Week.

Big City Play Event To Launch Strategy And Summer Of Activities B ra d fo rd ’s multi-award winning City Park is set to become a large playground for children, young people and families to enjoy. The All to Play For play event takes place on Saturday 13 July from 1pm – 4pm. There will be a wide range of

free play activities which will include: a climbing tower, den building, DJing workshops, arts and crafts, sports games, face painting, scrap and loose parts play and much more. The All to Play For event kicks-off a whole range of summer play activities for children and young people across the Bradford District. These events include the National Play Day on 7 August

Described as a ‘sinking ship’ by Mutahida Quami Movement (MQM) chief, Altaf Hussain. Yes, Pakistan is shooting itself in the foot over and over again. It was inevitable that Pakistan’s new Finance & Revenue Minister would apply for a new loan. Ishaq Dar has said that in order to avoid a payment crisis, the nation will yet again take out another loan to service the $3 billion worth of foreign debt that stands. Dar told the House that Pakistan borrowed $8.5 billion during the last five years. Is this the only way to raise revenue for Pakistan? By continuing to borrow and leave a bigger legacy for each successive Government. Although he assures us that the

Wales are being given the right to challenge decisions to stop prosecutions or not charge suspects. The victims' right to review covers any decision by the Crown Prosecution Service not to pursue a case. Director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer said victims had been treated as "bystanders" in the past. The move could affect about 70,000 cases a year, but would not cover those dropped by the police. Ministers and campaigners said it would improve the way the justice system dealt with victims.

Council Targets Takeaway Outlets To Provide Healthier Food In Obesity Battle A healthy eating award for takeaways is being introduced by Bradford Council as part of a wide-ranging strategy to get people to eat better food. One in six meals eaten across the district is bought from a takeaway or other eatery, and health chiefs are concerned about rising levels of obesity and dietrelated illnesses, like diabetes. From this month, food establishments will be discouraged from offering ‘supersize’ portions and asked to offer a greater number of healthy options if they want to gain top marks in a new award scheme. The Food Award will assess and score Bradford’s takeaways on the sizes of their meals and the number of healthy choices on their menus. The award would be available for takeaways to apply for, rather than something imposed on all eateries, to give customers helpful guidance on where they could go to get a healthy meal.

The Council is also looking at how it can offer advice to new businesses on the benefits of serving healthy food to their customers when they are granted planning permission. Tackling obesity was named as one of the district’s new public health priorities back in March.

– just like any other responsible lender throughout the world, then I am sure this would create enough revenue to see the government through at least part of its term. But, as we know it’s the same people in seats in government who took these loans in the first place. As it is a matter of Pakistan’s international reputation, Dar says, “Regardless of whoever signed up for the loan, we will have to repay what we borrowed”. I would request that all those who easily took loans from the national banking institutions repay them with the same decency, as that is also a matter of their reputation. Iftikhar Shah

100-Year-Old Grandma In Primary School You’re never too old to learn: Mexican grandmother Manuela Hernandez has finally graduated from primary school - at the age of 100. Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) government will not borrow on terms that run counter the national interest. What exactly does this mean for the people except that Pakistan will continue to suck the life out of its citizens – this is the national disinterest! So what happens about all the loans taken out by companies and individuals running into the millions and even billions? What of the unpaid utility bills big industries owe which also run into the millions and billions? Well as we have seen, they have simply been brushed under the carpet and no one has been held accountable for repayments. If simply all these loans were recalled – with interest obviously

There are also proportionally more obese children in the Bradford district than nationally. The problem is greatest in deprived families. And the number of people across the district suffering Health bosses estimate that about from diabetes has jumped by 30 per 225,000 adults in the Bradford district cent in four years. are overweight or obese, with severely obese people likely to die on average The new Bradford District Food Strategy also sets its sights on reducing the many tonnes of edible food that ends up in landfill. Food waste accounts for a significant proportion of household waste. Nationally, local authorities collect 4.6 million tonnes of food and drink waste every year that had an equivalent retail value of £7.5 billion and costs millions more to dispose of. Cutting down on food waste means families can save on the grocery bills and benefit the environment too.”

The new policy, which is in effect now, follows a 2011 Court of Appeal ruling which stated that "as a decision not to prosecute is in reality a final decision for a victim, there must be a right to seek review of such a decision". Javed Khan, chief executive of Victim Support, says: “The Right to Review strengthens the rights of victims during the criminal justice process and is welcomed by Victim Support. “Too often victims tell us that they don’t have much of a voice in our justice system. This new initiative by the Crown Prosecution

Service is a step in the right direction and will help to re-position victims back at the heart of our justice system.”

THE BAZAAR MAKES A SPLASH Shoppers packed out Rotherham’s outdoor market for the launch of “The Bazaar” – a weekly event designed to boost trade on a traditionally slow market day. The brainchild of businessman Hassan Ali, The Bazaar is said to have previously proved “extremely popular” in Bradford and Leeds, before being brought to Rotherham. Bhangra dancers and an Indian brass band were among the entertainment attracting the crowd, before the stalls began

trading. From now on, The Bazaar will run in Rotherham’s outdoor covered market every Thursday from 10am until 4pm, providing a “unique blend of Asian, multicultural and traditional products”. It also runs in Leeds each Wednesday, in Kirkgate Market, between 10am and 6pm. Under the terms agreed by the authority, The Bazaar has a licence to operate for a year, with the option to extend it for another two years if successful.

Mr Ali, director of The Bazaar, said: “The Bazaar is the only place in Rotherham at which shoppers can find approximately 150 shops in one place stocking Asian fabrics and fashion, jewellery, footwear, food and much more. Mr Ali, rather than Rotherham Council, is responsible for aspects of running the new market such as recruiting traders, marketing, allocating stalls and cleaning the site. DO WE REALLY HAVE MORE RIGHTS IN THE UK? Have you ever heard of legitimately bypassing immigration regulations to get relatives in the UK? Yes, it is in fact as easy and completely legal to do. All one needs to do is technically work in another European country for three months, and then be considered under EU rather than British law on their return. So is this cheating the system or just getting past unfair rules? Under UK law, a person is only able to bring their spouse in, a non-European Economic Area (EEA) citizen, in to Britain if he or she meets the £18,6000-ayear base earning requirement. This is often difficult especially if someone’s income is from freelance work. For example someone from the US is here on a student or work visa and they marry a UK citizen. They can only apply for a marriage visa is the UK citizen is earning the base earning requirement of £18,600. If payment details are available then it’s straightforward, but for someone on a minimum wage, self employed or freelance work, this may be difficult. But if the person leaves the UK and works in the EEA for about three months they can then bring their spouse into the country. This is known as the ‘Surinder Singh’ route. Under European freedom of movement, UK citizen can move to France for ex-

ample, and bring non UK spouse into France. UK citizen must prove he/she has been exercising his/her treaty rights by working there for at least three months. The couple can now move to the UK together without UK citizen needing to earn £18,600. By exercising your rights under European freedom of movement, your status as a European citizen takes priority over your status as a UK citizen, and when you return to the UK you are allowed to bring your non-EEA spouse without having to meet the £18,600 minimum earnings requirement which applies to Britons. In simpler terms, EEA citizens have stronger migration rights than UK citizens, since they can bring in family members from outside Europe in this way. This method is not publicises and it’s really hard to find on the UKBA website but I was surprised when I heard about it. Of course they don’t really want anyone to know about it. It is therefore easier for someone

to connect and to harness these talents and resources to benefit those less privileged, less able or those who are simply in need of opportunities to better themselves. Having been in this country for over half a century, we should have produced many more Lord Ahmed’s and Lady Warsi’s, there should have been lots more Amir Khan’s fighting in the rings and we might also have had a few more Sir Anwar Pervez’s. In fact we should have by now, been represented in every field of human achievement including Sport, Science & Technology, Academia, Business & Enterprise and many more! For too long, the concept of ‘what the community can do for me’ or ‘what can I get out of this’ has been embedded in our philosophy…..rather than ‘what can I do for the community’ or ‘what can I give to this’! Broadly speaking, doing something for the ‘greater good’ has never been any part of our belief, and our daily practice has reflected that notion where ‘self’ has been central to everything that we do. If we are to move out of this dilemma, we need to change our fundamental though processes, and start thinking about ‘giving’ …. And what we give can be in the form of knowledge, skill, time, commitment, money, talent, ability… so long as another who is less fortunate is able to benefit, that is what matters.

from France, Spain, Germany or Ireland to bring in their Pakistani relative or partner, and each year around 20,000 non-European family members come into the UK this way. After some research I found a statement issued by the Immigration Minister Mark Harper: "The EEA family permit is not a 'loophole'. It reflects the current requirements of EU law and would not apply if someone went abroad to a member state for a short time just in order to circumvent the immigration rules. An application will be refused if it cannot be proved the British citizen was genuinely engaged in employment." This contradicts the UKBA website which says that it does not matter if the only reason a British national goes to another member state is to exercise an economic Treaty right so that they can come back to the UK with their family members. huge community resources in between prayer times? Why can they not be used as a focus for other community activities? Our mosques are some of the most under-utilised community resources, and what’s more, they are located in the heart of every local community. Used properly, with due respect, and for noble causes, every mosque can become a hive of activity for young and old alike! It is only when we start to modify our thinking at an individual level, can we ever hope that our changed behaviours may lead to greater unity and a spirit of co-operation within our communities, and ultimately in the long term, bring about a much needed transformation in the wider Pakistani community across UK. If we all see it as a personal responsibility, and act accordingly, it will ultimately develop into collective action. If we all wait for the other person to do something, we will never get off the ground. Now is the time to wake up, sit up and do something!… if it is not already too late! Of course, this brief edict does not purport to offer immediate solutions to all our problems particularly amongst young Pakistani men. The purpose is to prick the conscience, provoke some thought and create a realisation of the need for some urgent action now!

THE BLESSINGS OF RAMADAN 2013

As another Ramadan approaches we can feel the Muslim communities throughout the land mobilising in preparation. A month of fasting and prayer, where no food or water is taken by individuals between the hours of

sunrise and sun set. This spiritual month emphasises the nature of man seeking to fulfil his obligations to his Lord, through charity and prayer. Remembering your neighbours and the less fortunate, sharing of meals and

gratefulness for all that we have are intrinsic components of this blessed month, within which the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Jaan. M. Khan E Mail: jmkglory@yahoo.co.uk

All are Rotten

A ticker used to advertise a talk show reads: “From vegetable seller to ruler – all are equally engaged in minting money”, which is very true. This is despicable and I would like to elaborate on this cancer affecting our society. Every day we are shown all many misdeeds on TV and read about them in the newspapers. Every misdeed for which Allah has prescribed severe punishment – even hell – is now common in our society. We are Muslims, who are supposed to be of exemplary character. We have abundant religious scholars and preachers, but nothing seems to make any difference and our national character is declining fast. It looks like the Almighty has sealed our hearts. In Surah Kahf we read: “He whom Allah guides is rightly guided, but he whom Allah leaves to stray – for him you will not find any protector to lead to the right path.” From the poorest to the richest, from simple workers to the educated, all imaginable misdeeds are being committed. It has become almost impossible to differentiate between sinners and the righteous, between hypocrites and the honest. It is very difficult to describe all the evils prevalent in the country. Lying and hypocrisy have become state policy and has led to their being practiced from top to bottom. No shame is felt in blatantly lying on TV or in press interviews. People seem to have forgotten that “munafiqat” (hypocrisy) is considered to be the second biggest sin after “shirk” (associating someone with Allah) and its punishment is none other than hell. Adulteration of edibles, fake and spurious medicines – these crimes should get capital punishment, but in this Arze Pak it is openly practiced and the culprits are getting richer and more influential. Openly cheating in examinations, target killing, sectarian killing in the name of religion, kidnapping for ransom, throwing acid on women, raping and killing minor girls, smuggling of narcotics, fake passports, fake visas, fake telephone exchanges, etc. have all become part of our national culture. Even murders and lynchings in broad daylight seem to have no effect on our rulers. Many of our past rulers have been part and parcel of these criminal activities, which need to be eliminated with surgical precision as one would do

a physical tumour. The question is: how? Here are some points for consideration: • Every individual constantly needs self-scrutiny to improve his character and inculcate higher values. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) says: “He whose tomorrow is not an improvement on his yesterday, should feel worried about his life”. • Since a society is nothing but an enlargement of its individual members, the same self-assessment is required of society. If not done, it will stagnate and soon decay. • All those who exercise any influence in society are required to be constantly vigilant and caution society about such factors that drag it into decadence. • Elections are over and results known. However, society cannot produce an Umar bin Abdul Aziz if the individual members of that society do not reflect the values that this great man of our history embodied. • Mohammad Ali Jinnah was proclaimed the undisputed leader of the Muslims in the Subcontinent and his subsequent successful struggle for an independent homeland was only possible because it had been preceded by a great effort in intellectual, educational, religious and spiritual planes. The ordinary voter of his time refused to be influenced by money, ethnic loyalty, sectarian affiliation or any other factor and stood with determination behind the Quaid. Only the tremendous efforts made by all those leading personalities of the Indian Muslim community could do make that happen. Allama Iqbal played a very decisive role in creating Muslim self-consciousness and a desire to revive their Islamic roots and culture. Similar roles were played by Altaf Husain Hali, Shibli Numani, Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanvi and his disciples Sayyid Sulaiman Nadvi, Mawlana Shabbir Ahmad Usmani and Mawlana Zafar Ahmad Usmani. The latter two were nominated by Quaid-eAzam to hoist the flag of Pakistan in Lahore and Dacca respectively after independence. • If we earnestly want to rebuild our nation, we will have to do some serious soul searching. Every individual should ask him/ herself where they went wrong. One can only hope that sincere efforts at self-scrutiny will not go in vain. Whatever else, it can’t do any harm. In the Quran, Allah

has, over and over again, asked us to do this. We are urged to utilise our abilities to the full – our senses, our intellectual resources and, above all, our hearts. It is reassuring to observe that there do appear to be signs of change. People have shown that they are no longer willing to unquestioningly swallow the political myths sold to them by the pundits in order to sustain their own power. The large turnout during the recent elections is also a source of optimism. Many young people from the higher middle class have actively participated. These are good omens for our future. The general dissatisfaction with the status quo currently prevailing also indicates signs of change. My colleagues and I experienced the exhilaration of change and achievement while working single-mindedly to make Pakistan a nuclear and missile power. If we want betterment, we need to look at ourselves and follow Allah’s edicts. Imam Ghazali had warned of tyrants and Allah’s curse if we neglected His edicts. In Surah Maida (Ayat 105) we are told: “O you who believe, guard your own souls. If you follow right guidance, no hurt can come to you from those who go astray”. Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) said that people wrongly interpreted this. He himself had heard the Holy Prophet (pbuh) say that when people became so uncaring that they don’t try to rectify what is wrong, then Allah would bring His curse on them. It is imperative that we preach good and refrain from wrongdoing, otherwise Allah will put the worst from amongst us to be our rulers and they will make our lives hell. God-fearing people will pray for relief, but they will not be heard. This is what we are seeing now – the wrongdoers are powerful and the prayers of the people remain unanswered. I plead with all Pakistanis to heed Allah’s warnings. His chastisement is severe and painful and nobody can escape it. Remember Surah Ibrahim: “Think not that Allah does not heed the deeds of the wrongdoers. He but gives them respite against the day (Doomsday) when their eyes will fixedly stare in horror”. There is still time to repent, beg for forgiveness and follow the right path!

For more than half a century Ziarat has been famous for two things – the second largest Juniper forest in the world and the elegant Residency where the founder of our nation spent his last dying days. It was the British who developed Ziarat into a hill station and made it their summer headquarters. The Quaid-eAzam Residency, built in 1892, was actually the old residence of the agent to the British Governor General. Some say, it was “initially meant to serve as a sanatorium. At 2450 metres above the sea and pleasantly located amid a forest where the air is even today richly scented by juniper, it could hardly have served a better purpose. The building was permitted to serve its original purpose for a few years only. Early in the 20th century, it was appropriated to become the summer residence of the Quetta-based agent

of the governor general”. Perched upon a hill, with metal gates that lead to the lush green lawns with graceful Chinar trees and flower gardens. The double story house was picturesque with its wide verandahs supported by timber pillars and wooden floors. The Quaid spent his last days here, battling advanced tuberculosis of the lungs, and trying to hold onto life. The Residency in Balochistan marked an important last chapter in his history, and indeed the first chapter of ours as a young nation (only one year old at the

time). Sadly, it appears that the Quaid’s dream of a progressive and democratic Pakistan died with him in those last days in Ziarat. Ill and frail, he was unable to control the events that had been set in place. Today, the house that became a powerful symbol of the Quaid’s last days is no more – it has been burnt to the ground by forces that were set in motion years ago when Pakistan failed to become a discrimination free, inclusive democracy. The Residency’s structure was made almost entirely of wood; and it must have caught fire easily when the grenades were hurled at the monument in the late hours of the night. The destruction, whose beginnings were born in the last few months of the Quaid’s life in Ziarat, has come full circle. Today we mourn the burning of his house as the final epitaph.

British Government Cannot Intervene in Imran Farooq Murder Case

British senior minister of state for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs Sayeeda Warsi confirmed that London Metropolitan Police is taking serious steps in the Imran Farooq murder case as the British government cannot intervene in the case. Sayeeda warsi said that she does not believe any conspiratorial theory and the British government is trying its level best to prevent incidents of hatred against Muslims. The MQM leaders body was found with multiple stab wounds and head injuries on September

16, 2010, outside his home in Green Lane, Edgware, North London. Deceased Dr Imran Farooq was deputy convener of the party, technically the next predecessor to the MQM chief Altaf Hussain. He was the co-founder of All Pakistan Mohajir Students Organisation (APMSO). Some sources revealed that London police consulted the wife of murdered Imran Farooq in some related issues but avoided to expose the details. However, it is

cleared that London police exchanged information regarding the cases after arrestment and release on bail of Pakistani origin Iftikhar Hussain. Earlier, muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain alleged that conspiracies have been made on national and international levels which the British government refuse. London police have also imposed restrictions over the MQM Chief and 5 other prominent leaders.

Unemployment drops by 5,000 The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has said that UK's unemployment has fallen by 5,000. The ONS data showed that 2.51 million people were out of work betwaeen January and April. The jobless rate was unchanged from three months earlier, at 7.8%. Average earnings in the period were 1.3% up on a year earlier, thanks to a sharp rise in April bonus payments. Meanwhile, Jobseeker's Allowance claimants fell a surprise 8,600 in May from a month earlier to 1.51 million. The number of benefits claimants is at its lowest level in two years. Average earnings rose by 3.3% in April alone, versus April 2012, mainly because

many companies paid out their bonuses to workers a month later this year. That delay was widely speculated to have been due to the fact that the top rate of income tax fell from 50% rate of inflation, with consumer to 45% on April 6, with the late bonus payments prices up 2.4% in the year to benefiting from the lower rate. Higher Risk Of Diabetes If Eat More Red Meat public health messages should be directed toward the consumption of high-quality protein that is low in total and saturated fats.. These public health recommendations should include cuts of red meat that are also low in fat, along with fish, poultry and low-fat dairy products. It is not the type of protein (or meat) that is the problem: it is the type of fat.

Eating larger amounts of red meat can heighten the chances of developing diabetes, researchers have found. Raising consumption by more than half a serving a day was associated with a 48% increase in risk over the next four years. Conversely, lowering red meat consumption by the same amount led to a 14% reduction in risk. However, evidence suggests that

THE SHAPE OF MADRASAS TO COME

I recently attended the funeral of someone I knew. A devout and pious man Mohammed Rafiq, who had suddenly died at his home, in the early hours of Saturday morning. The service was arranged for Sunday evening at the Ridge Road Madrassa, in Rotherham. Entering the Madrassa early and after completing the Asar prayer (which is the 3rd obligatory prayer of the day); I sat and waited for the Moulana to deliver the customary few words of wisdom to the congregation. In Islamic terms this is not a eulogy, although the deceased is referred to and is praised, but a more general recitation of the temporary and flawed existence of man and his ultimate fate of death and judgement. As it turned out Moulana Kabir delivered what was to be probably one of the most impressive funeral sermons I had heard. He spoke in English, so the majority were able to follow the details of what he said and spoke with a

calm rational, referencing the deceased, interspersed with a truly moving account of a teenage Hafiz in Mecca, who wanted to be the Mufti, but tragically died in a car accident minutes from home. He spoke of the Asian diaspora and our parents sacrifice to make a better life for their children and posed a question which warrants reflection, Imagine how your parents felt on their first night in this land and compare that to the blessings that you have here today. A simple question on a sad evening, as we gave back to God one of those early immigrant parents. The Moulana went on to speak of patriotism and loyalty and the need for Muslims to live in peace and set an example to the nonMuslims. He asked the young members of the congregation to do that which they increasingly seem wholly incapable of doing, to pause and reflect, to be grateful to their parents and forefathers, genuinely things which if done, will better shape their future actions. After the janaza (funeral), you normally find yourself in a mad rush, as people jostle to get a glimpse of the deceased. I have previously emerged from these not un- similar to the opponents of Amir Khan, bruised and drenched in sweat. However today was to be a revelation, as the

Moulana informed a hasty congregation to remain seated as the family of Mr Rafiq make their way with the casket to the entrance. Then one row at a time emerged to form an orderly queue to pay their last respects. All the time the Moulana recited words of wisdom and patience to the congregation, stating the virtues of respect for the deceased and his family. This completed new Ridge road Madras is indeed impressive, standing high on the hill, visible from various parts of town. Internally beautiful woodwork and carvings embody the doors and entrances, with a significant fish tank lodged between entrances to the ground floor prayer hall. Yet of all its beauty, this would be inconsequential if the content of the Moulana, who gives the sermon and educates the students wasn’t of the highest quality. And here is where I have the greatest praise for Maulana Kabir, the bedrock upon which the whole project sits. His engaging and enlightened sermons are to be searched for and appreciated by all. He has and continues to bring forth generations of young people versed in the Holy Quran and moulded with a British Muslim Identity. Jaan. M. Khan E Mail: jmkglory@yahoo.co.uk

Drug Crime Reduction Campaign In Bd5 Officers from Bradford Council’s East Area Neighbourhood Office have been working with partners to re-launch a campaign to reduce drug crime in the BD5 area. The campaign called No Drugs in BD5 is aimed at informing people about the issues of drugs and the consequences of drug related crime as well as encouraging people to report suspected crimes anonymously to Crimestoppers

on 0800 555 111. Successful campaigns with school children and staff from local schools out on the street handing out stickers, whilst Council Wardens, local PCSOs and other partners will be talking to residents about the affects of drugs and drug related crime. This initiative which has been funded by local ward councillors, will be rolled out to other areas of Little

Horton. Coun Imran Hussain deputy leader of the council said: "The re-launch of the campaign comes in response to requests from parents as well as concerns from the local community about the issues of drugs and drug dealing in the area. "A similar campaign in 2011 saw a significant rise in the number of reports to Crimestoppers.”

Life In The UK Test ‘Unfit For Purpose’ understand better how to participate in daily British life and make a contribution. The handbook contains about 3,000 facts including five telephone numbers, 34 websites, 278 historical dates and several brief excerpts of British poetry. Of the 400 Official Practice Questions and Answers in one of three official test handbooks,

A test taken by around 150,000 would-be British citizens each year is just a "bad pub quiz" with too much focus on culture and history at the expense of practical knowledge, an academic has said. The Life In The UK test, which must be passed to qualify for indefinite leave to remain in Britain, does not require practical necessities in everyday life. But it is required that new citizens know "trivial" facts such as the year Emperor Claudius invaded Britain, the year that Sake Dean Mahomet launched the first curry house in the country and the age of Big Ben. The test is a key part of immigration policy but is "unfit for purpose" in its current form. The Life In The UK test has gone from testing practical trivia to the purely trivial and is a major opportunity lost. Many citizens that were born and bred in the UK would struggle to know the answers to many of these questions. Britain will not be more cohesive because more have heard about the Battle of Trafalgar, but rather if future citizens

no telephone numbers, no websites, no poetry and only a few dates are mentioned. A Home Office spokesman said: "We've stripped out mundane information about water meters, train timetables, and using the internet. The new test rightly focuses on values and principles at the heart of being British. Instead of telling people how to claim benefits it encourages participation in British life.

:: Here are some of the possible questions and the multiple choice answers on the Life in the UK citizenship test: 1. Which landmark is a prehistoric monument which still stands in the English county of Wiltshire? A) Stonehenge B) Hadrian's Wall C) Offa's Dyke D) Fountains Abbey. 2. What is the name of the admiral who died in a sea battle in 1805 and has a monument in Trafalgar Square, London? A) Cook B) Drake C) Nelson D) Raleigh. 3. In 1801, a new version of the official flag of the United Kingdom was created. What is it often called?. A) The British Standard B) The Royal Banner C) The St George Cross D) The Union Jack. 4. Who is the Patron Saint of Scotland?. A) St Andrew B) St David C) St George D) St Patrick. 5. What flower is traditionally worn by people on Remembrance Day?. A) Poppy B) Lily C) Daffodil D) Iris.

UK Police Unit Monitoring 9,000 ‘Extremists’ The NDEU has been monitoring the campaigners with a 24/7, 17-person social media surveillance team. They use a technique to scrape and analyze Facebook profiles, Tweets, and other public data, using geolocation tracking and "sentiment analysis" tools to predict future crimes by determining targets' moods. The unit uses the strategy, along with undercover agents and paid informants, to monitor a wide range of individuals spanning the political spectrum, from the far-right English Defense League to animal rights

An obscure unit within London's Metropolitan Police Service has been monitoring and keeping records on almost 9,000 political campaigners and activists using social media surveillance and other methods. A freedom of information request filed by the The Guardian reveals that the National Domestic Extremism Unit (NDEU) stores dossiers on 8,931 individuals labeled as "domestic extremists," many of which do not have any criminal record, according to a senior officer familiar with the unit's operations.

advocates and anti-war protestors. Regulations meant to prevent excessive police surveillance are in place under the UK's Regulatory Investigation Powers Act (RIPA), but the law, which passed in 2000, doesn't include any controls for police use of social media for investigations. The news came a day after the Met Police secretly recorded meetings between attorneys and an eyewitness in the Stephen Lawrance case.

When Your Head Hurts… Chronic headaches – whether a dull ache or a stabbing, throbbing pain – can make it difficult to get through the day. Here are a few surprising causes and some tips for how to nip that ache in the bud We have all had a head-ache-after all, it is one of the most common types of pain in the body – but what brings it on and how do you fix it? TENSION HEADCHES Tension headaches are thought to stem from tight, contracted muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp and jaw. You may feel pain in a band-like pattern around the head, which can also extend to your neck, shoulders and face. Surprising cause 1 Grinding your teeth, which often happens at night when you’re asleep. If your suspect your are a grinder, watch for side effects such as jaw soreness, loose or chipped teeth and headaches. Fix it: Practise relaxation exercis-

es such as yoga stretches or mediation before bedtime to help alleviates stress. Also ask your dentist about getting a custommade night guard that fits comfortably over your teeth. Surprising cause 2 Holding in anger. When you are angry, you unconsciously tense your muscles, which can cause headaches. Fix it: Express anger, in a way that will not cause emotional or physical harm, when it first bubbles up. If you can’t express your anger to the person who upset you, then vent to a friend or partner. Also try deep breathing to relax your muscles. MIGRAINES For many women, migraines occur in the few days prior to or following a menstrual period. Reduced levels of the hormone oestrogen around the time of menstruation may play a contributing role. The intense, throbbing, pounding pain is usually felt on one side of the head or

near eye. The sufferer may also be sensitive to light, odours and noise and may experience nausea or vomiting. The pain can last anywhere from four to 72 hours. Surprising cause 1 Poor posture (for example, hunching over your computer). The reason: Your neck is out of alignment, which can create muscle tension in your upper neck and back. Fix it: Maintain good posture by holding your head upright. Also adjust the height of your monitor so that it is at eye level. A good idea is to take mini breaks every 15 minutes. Surprising cause 2 Artificial sweeteners. Some of us are not able to effectively process aspartame, a sugar substitute found in diet drinks and snacks, which means we end up with high levels of it in our blood. This chemical may jump-start a migraine by causing blood vessels in the brain to expand. Fix it: If you suspect that you may be sensitive to aspartame, keep

a headache diary for at least two weeks. When a headache strikes, record the day and time and what food or beverage you recently consumed. If you experience a headache consistently within an hour or two after eating or drinking something containing aspartame, steer clear of diet drinks and foods that contain the ingredient. Try switching to a different sweetener or opt for sugar. WARNING SIGNS Although a headache rarely signals a stroke, tumour or aneurysm, head off to your nearest hospital immediately if you experience any of the following: • difficulty in speaking • Lasting head pain • Numbness, weakness or tingling that lasts longer than a few minutes • Loss of consciousness • High fever

RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY UPDATE

Mohammed Mahroof BSc (Hons) MRICS Consultant Mark Jenkinson & Son

At this time of year, with the sun out, people's thoughts are on improving their property or possibly embarking on a new property. It is never a good or bad time to consider purchasing a residential property, merely a consideration of the prevailing economic factors. As a home owner if you think about the price you paid for your property in the 80s or 90s, has it really gone down, or have aspirations of substantial increases disappeared? Should we really look at our home as investments or should we consider them in the same category as food, a necessity of life? The latter thought certainly resonates with people in some parts of Europe/the world. In this country we have a strong connection with owning our home and looking at it as an accruing asset. Property prices are second only to discussing the weather. Everyone has an opinion - which is good. There are people who bought their

properties in the 80s and early 90s who in some cases are looking at mortgage shortfalls as they took out endowment mortgages. The endowments because of economic factors in some cases are not covering the mortgage at maturity. The idea was that not only will the endowment cover your mortgage it will also give you a lump sum. This has not happened for many thousands of people who are left with the choice of re-mortgaging, paying from savings or selling their properties. The reality is that the price of the property would have increased in the meantime, but the mortgage will not be covered by the endowment, quite a property paradox. Coming back to today's market, there are clear signs that activity in the market place is moving in a positive direction. If the price you require from your property is sensible then chances are you will find a buyer. If your aspirations are based on the heady days of the market then you will struggle. What you

need to remember is the property is an extremely frustrating market. you are buying is probably in a similar scenario, so are you really in any Another issue that seems to be afworse situation? fecting the residential property market is the access to finance as There is a clear scenario developing mortgages are becoming more difthat the population of this coun- ficult to secure. in this country along with the rest of the world is increasing. This clearly means that land, finite in supply, will increase in demand. This demand is not only for residential use but also for all other uses including agriculture. Land in this country is very affordable. Forward thinking investors/developers are starting to return to this market. Clearly it will not be too far into the future that increased demand for housing will start a new building programme. Such scenarios have happened in the past and will happen in the future. Central government, housing associations, local authorities are all looking at ways of encouraging or enabling further development of properties for the residential property market. After all the need for housing is a necessity of life. As ever, of course, this is just an overview and a snapshot of opinion. You should always seek professional advice when considering any property-related transaction.

Inflamatory Speakers Banned From UK Two US anti-Muslim activists who hoped to join an EDL march in Woolwich have been banned from entering the UK. Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, who set up Stop Islamization of America and run the website Jihad Watch, have been forbidden from entering the country on the grounds that their presence would "not be conducive to the public good". The far-right EDL is planed a march to mark Armed Forces Day

on June 29, ending in Woolwich, south east London, where soldier Drummer Lee Rigby was killed in May. Ms Geller and Mr Spencer were both set to attend. A Home Office spokesman said: "We can confirm that Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer are subject to an exclusion decision. "The Home Secretary will seek to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good. "We condemn

all those whose behaviours and views run counter to our shared values and will not stand for extremism in any form." Home Affairs Select Committee chairman Keith Vaz welcomed the decision. He said: "I welcome the Home Secretary's ban on Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer from entering the country. "This is the right decision. The UK should never become a stage for inflammatory speakers who promote hate."

Sheffield South Safer Neighbourhood Updates The South Yorkshire Police South Safer Neighbourhood area (SNA) covering the council wards of Nether Edge, Gleadless Valley, Graves Park and Beauchief and Greenhill, have been actively and successfully dealing with anti social behaviour in these areas. Local communities have considered antisocial behaviour as the important priority the SYP need to tackle. In addition to tackling Antisocial behaviour and PACT priorities the following are some of the positive results from the last month, planned activities and other news. It’s Your Child - Update Finally the highways work is completed and we can now move onto the next phase with some enforcement and further engagement with the children in school. Over the past month nearly 1000 children from Y3 to Y6 in selected schools have taken part in an exercise designed by Hallam University to gauge young people’s perceptions of danger. The results are with the university for some evaluation. The young people also designed some artwork which have now been incorporated into leaflets. It is our intention to use these leaflets, bespoke to each school, to hand out to parents parking inappropriately around the schools. These will be handed out by children wherever possible. Hopefully shaming those parents into having a little more consideration for their childrens safety. Crime Prevention These messages are pertinent and need to be reinforced. As we approach the summer we need to highlight Crime Prevention and encourage everyone to take some responsibility. Every day officers check the local crimes and are regularly amazed at how many Burglaries are committed at insecure premises, how many vehicles are broken into where property has been left on display or just how many mobile phones are left on the table in cafes and restaurants or on top of someone’s open handbag waiting to be stolen. An iPhone5 costs over £600. Would you leave that amount of cash lying around? Doubt it. Most criminals are opportunists. They don’t want to be caught and look for easy pickings. If you were a criminal why break into someone’s house when you

can walk through an unlocked door? Why break into cars where nothing is there, look for the SatNav cradle left on display or the bag on the backseat. Sound familiar? Crime prevention is easy. Lock your doors, remove property from your car and keep your phone safe. DONT BE THE VICTIM WHO FORGOT................................... Summer Events On a similar theme if you are attending one of the many events planned across the city this summer then please be aware and don’t leave any property on display in your vehicles. The first major test will be Cliffhanger in Graves Park in July. This is a fantastic family day out but don't let in end in tears.

EDL/UAF Demonstrations Sheffield A number of people have expressed concerns about the demonstrations a few weeks ago. There are a couple of articles on the SYP website which will hopefully answer your questions and explain a little more. The force is making extra resources available to deal with any eventualities, balancing both groups rights to peaceful assembly whilst minimising the impact to businesses and local people. South Yorkshire Police officers are working with local communities to address any concerns and appeal for cooperation. Drugs Warrants We have executed a number of warrants this month at Holmhirst RD, Hunter House Rd and Bowood Rd. Please if you have information about drug dealing in your area either let us know directly or contact Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111. All information will be treated in the strictest confidence and will be investigated.

Good lighting is an excellent way to deter a thief. Fitting exterior lighting with dusk to dawn sensors is a good idea. These are light sensitive; they come on when it gets dark and turn off when it gets light. Using low wattage bulbs means they can be a very cheap and effective security deterrent. Burglar Alarms are also effective and can provide you and your family with peace of mind. Government statistics show that 60% of burglaries on homes fitted with burglar alarms are unsuccessful so it really is worth investing in a home security system. Additional information on Home Security can be found on the Home Office website and the Secured by Design website If you own a laptop or iphone can I recommend you look at the following website www.preyproject.com. FOUR BIG IDEAS TO GROW OUR CHILDREN #2 INTERACTION

BIG IDEA #2 – INTERACTION If you knew there was something free and really simple that would massively help your child do better at school and improve their chances in life, would you do it? Here’s the simple thing you can do: Talk with your child. Most of us say that we spend time interacting with our children, but studies have shown that in reality, we don’t communicate with them half as much as we think. Do you talk with your child? How do you talk with your child? It is really important. Simple, respectful communication with our children has a direct effect on their self-esteem. Their emotional and psychologi-

cal development is strengthened. When we deliberately make time to talk with them, their language ability develops. One lady we worked with did not talk with her baby because she thought it wasn’t necessary because “they can’t talk back”. As a result, her baby’s language did not develop as it should have done. You might feel strange talking with a baby, but please understand it is so important. They will learn from you as you describe what you are doing, as you say what they are doing and comment on what is going on around them. It helps them learn and make sense of their surroundings. Feel Teddy’s nose! It’s so soft! Noisy cars! — look, there’s a yellow one! Are you hungry? Now daddy is opening the fridge. Recent research shows that children who are exposed to lots of talk (NOT TV! And NOT simply “put your toys away!”, “don’t do that!”, “get off the sofa!”). When there is warm and genuine, interaction and lots of language being heard, these children are so much more confident and successful at school and in life. So what’s the key to talking more with your children? The researchers noticed some good strategies parents used when interacting with their children.

• Just talk. Use everyday events like folding the washing, changing nappies or washing up. Talk enough to keep the child cooperative and engaged. This works well with younger children learning their first words. Make ordinary activities into a game using words. teresting things. ‘Look at the big bird in the sky! It reminds me of the story grandma told us about ...’. Talking about things is a great way to remember past adventures and prepare children for new experiences. One more thing. If your family is bilingual, then use two languages with your child. It will not harm their development. When your children talk, even if it’s silly or hard to understand, use it as a chance to add information, encourage more talking, or to build on what they said. ‘You’re talking about the little bird? Look at his pointy beak. What colour is his beak? He can fly high in the air.’

Pupils Missing Out On Free School Meals Almost a quarter of a million children registered for free school meals are not receiving them, figures show. Figures from January show 1,307,455 pupils registered for free school meals, a key measure of poverty. Of these, 82.7% actually took up the dinners, meaning 225,690 schoolchildren were not eating the free meals for which they were registered. The Children's Food Trust is calling for action to ensure poor children do not miss out on nutritious school food. Their school lunch could be their only proper meal of the day. Free lunches are particularly important when so many families are struggling to make their food budgets stretch. There are still many reasons why families don't sign up for school meals, and why they don't always opt

to take them up once they have registered. The Food Trust want all disadvantaged children to have access to the free nutritious daily meal they are entitled to. The figures showed a slight rise in the number of pupils registered for the meals since January last year. Then, slightly fewer pupils were registered but a greater proportion actually ate them. Last year, some 215,000 missed out. The government's efforts to encourage more parents to sign up for the meals had increased the uptake by 80,000 in the past three years. The application process has been streamlined so that parents can check their own eligibility and apply online, and published advice for schools on ways to encourage parents to register their child.

The UK’s Identity Fraud Hotspots Revealed

London’s East Ham is the identity fraud capital of the UK, according to new research by credit reference agency Experian. It says there were 27 fraud attempts per 10,000 people in the area, which is massively higher than the national average of four attempts per 10,000 people. Every place in the top ten fraud hotspots is in London, with the majority in East London. Outside the English capital, Altrincham in Cheshire has the highest instances of fraud attempts, with 13 per 10,000 people. There are no Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish places in the non-London top ten. Here are the top ten places for fraud attempts outside London:

St Albans in Hertfordshire. However, Experian says fraud has decreased overall in the Home Counties over the past year. London also tops fraudulent application list East Ham also topped Experian’s list of the places where most first-party ID fraud had been

London topped the overall nationwide top ten for this sector, with the centre of Birmingham second, the centre of Manchester and Slough in joint third, and Luton and West Bromwich joint fifth.

The figures show that fraudsters are not only operating in innercity areas but are also targeting people in more affluent areas such as Hatfield in Hertfordshire, Camberley in Surrey and

How to avoid becoming a victim Here are some top tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of identity fraud: Keep pins and passwords private

– Memorise details rather than writing them down and never give account details to anyone else. Use different passwords for different accounts and try to avoid easily guessed names. If in doubt, don’t click – If an email seems suspicious, contact the relevant organisation and don’t give out personal details. Your bank, credit card provider and any reputable business will never ask for confirmation of details by email. Be smart with your smartphone – Be careful what information is stored on your phone, including emails that can be accessed without a password. Phone thefts are on the increase, particularly in inner-city areas. You should also be wary of security settings if you access public WiFi hotspots, especially if you use your phone to bank online. Don’t reveal too much on social networking sites – Fraudsters use personal details like date of birth, age, maiden names or pets’ names to guess private passwords. Keep your firewalls and security settings up to date Read your bank statements carefully for irregularities Check your credit report regularly – It’s a history of all your credit accounts and will highlight any irregularities such as suspect applications for credit and rises in card balances.
