Maha Sobhy PORTFOLIO OF SELECTED WORKS 2015-2021
Maha Sobhy, 24 Salve.

*Brief not upon the selection of works Throughout my career, I have been driven by a strong interest in architecture that responds to the dramas that sadly occupy the chronicles of our day, and have been taught that as architects are our duty towards the society we live in to be always in the frontline. This consciousness started early on in my career with the first project ever tackled in Bachelor being about Mediterranean Migration matters, which back in 2015 was a prevalent topic. My social drive increased during my overall academic years where I have been participating in many courses and workshops that tackle social problems such as the reconstruction of Syria, the reactivation of abandoned Italian ‘borghi’, the redesign and retrofit of social housing, and the most recent work about redesigning a post-pandemic healthcare facility. This portfolio wants to be representative of this personal growth and showcase a series of selected works upon topics such as post-covid design, retrofitting of social housing, migration, and reactivation of abandoned areas.

The Polar Star
Post-pandemic Healthcare design Description The Polar Star is a Healthcare center designed for the city of Karlskrona in Sweden. More specifically, in Kungsplan which is located in the northern part of the island of Trossö. The area is surrounded by culturally and historically valuable buildings from the 19th century with a baroque character. The site is about 1600m2 and presents many constraints: a historically important tram rail crosses through the plot; the area is subjected to flooding and is surrounded by boundaries that don’t allow the future expansion of the building. The project was designed in line with the Client’s (Region’s Blekinge) vision to create an attractive, health-promoting, and sustainable center with a human-centric approach and the city of Karlskrona’s vision to create a high-quality contemporary architecture addition. Moreover, this center was imagined to have the same function as a Polar Star, a glowing point in the north of Trossö, guiding you towards a healthy life.

Reloading San Siro
Retrofitting Post-War housing stock Description The Architecture of Interiors Design Studio [AoI.DS] 2019 is inspired by the ever-increasing number of studies that in Italy and Europe are concerned with the need for an opportunity to intervene on the vast residential property built after Second World War and, in particular, on the Social Housing building stock that constitutes for many Countries the most substantial part. This is due to the European Energy road map (2012) that has fixed the ambitious goal to cut gas emission by 85% by 2050, investing a large amount of money for retrofitting interventions on public buildings, especially on housing stock. The preventive analysis carried out on this building located in Milan has uncovered several needs within the area and in particular of the block in question. As a result of these considerations, we developed our project with the aim of the increase in quality housing and integration. Hence the creation of new types and a new distribution system, common spaces hosting different activities: a residence for students, strongly present in the building, an area used to host relatives and/or friends of the inhabitants.

Pavilion for Conviviality
Reactivation of fragile territories Description
Function
Temporary Pavilion
Location
S. Pietro, Sicily
The design task focused on the dialectical relationship between inhabiting and constructing, architecture and the place, in the belief that an understanding of contemporary transformations should elaborate on the concrete heritage and the ecological environment, recognizing permanence and variation and discovering new ways of conviviality. We explored the threshold between wilderness and civilization, nature and culture, matter and meaning.

The pavilion showcased in this chapter is located in Sicily, in a small rural village near Caltagirone in the middle of a cork oak forest. This new building had to make new relations with the cork oak forest and the neighboring agriculture. And it is part of a bigger complex that needed to be re-activated. Creating ceramics is a particular element of the city of Caltagirone, thus this function has been chosen for the pavilion. The aim is to create a simple and transparent structure to give a view of the fascinating landscape while cooking ceramics in a traditional way. The purpose is to attract visitors interested in learning this art and to offer them a unique experience.

Solomon’s Cathedral
Migrants’ reception Description The design theme reflects on the drama of the “migrants”, so the best place for the project could only be the island of Lampedusa. In this first phase of the work, gypsum models of the context were made concerning different scales to frame and understand the territory. In a later phase, the models of the design proposal were made at 5000 scales: a cathedral completely immersed in the island and accessible by canals carved into the rock. It wants to be a spiritual place of arrival and welcome. Solomon Cathedral is the negative of the traditional idea of a cathedral. It is not a majestic architectural mass, but a majestic cavity. The project highlights three points: the singularity of the island, the singularity of the work, and the singularity of the soul. Gypsum was the best material to express that concept.

Modelling Phases Personal pictures representing the process followed for the realisation of the gypsum models.
1. Positive model in cardboard The first thing we need a positive model in cardboard, with a strong solid base and all the curve levels to build up the morphology.
3. Negative model in rubber once the liquid rubber has solidified we obtain a negative shape of our model. This is the bases for the positive model in gypsum.
31
2. Pouring liquid rubber we create a forwork around the positive model and we put liquid rubber on top of it to obtain a negative shape.
31 — 33
4. Positive model in Gypsum By pouring the gypsum powder mixed with water on top of the negative model we obtain the positive in gypsum.
