Chairman's Message Dear Friends, It has been close to sixteen years since we started this journey with the overall motto of the larger Mahavir International family - "Love All Serve All". The endeavour has been to try and make a small difference in the lives of those from the disadvantaged sections of our society and to do it in a long term, self-sustainable manner. We have scrupulously stuck to the core values we started with - personal assessment of the beneficiaries through our members, ensuring that every single rupee contributed goes to the most deserving and needy persons, carrying out all our activities without impacting the self-respect of the beneficiaries and focusing on long-term association and commitment to the beneficiaries we aim to serve. The activities have grown many fold over the years and while the major focus has been on education of the bright and needy students, substantial work has also been taken up in Health, Helping the needy (now called Samvedana), Rural Development and Emergency Relief. Last few years have seen major expansion in our reach not only in the field of Education but also through Samvedana. Initiatives in the field of education now cover more than 500 street children as well - through the very ambitious Asha Deep Initiatives. I am privileged to present our "Annual Report, 2015-16" summarising the activities and developments at MI during the last year. All of this has become possible largely because of the total commitment and involvement of our esteemed members and excellent support from all our donors and contributors. We are now able to cover over 4,500 students from the weaker sections of the society at different levels and we have started impacting thousands of families through Samvedana initiative. A number of students who were supported by us from the initial years have now started their
VIR Dr B C JAIN professional and other careers and it is gratifying to note that a large number of them have made a commitment to associate themselves with MI-Vadodara with a view to ensure that similar benefits reach other deserving students. None of this would have been possible without the total dedication of the members and I would personally like to express my gratitude and appreciation for the love, affection and unqualified support that I have received from them. Our honourable donors, sponsors and the well-wishers have always encouraged us to expand our horizons and we hope to continue to receive their patronage in the times to come. All of us have benefited tremendously from close interactions with those that have been impacted by our activities and the joy of giving has really enriched our lives. To all of us from MI-Vadodara, it has really been something that we have done for our own enrichment and satisfaction. With my very best wishes,
B C JAIN June, 2016

involvement of our members in various activities is a cornerstone of our strategy and personal interactions with potential beneficiaries are seen as critical to making best use of our scarce human and financial resources. Extending a helping hand is done without compromising on the selfesteem of the intended beneficiaries. All of this is being done with clarity of purpose, well-defined destination and neatly chartered path to the destination involving focused activities as well as organized and structured approach. With well above hundred highly committed and motivated members from all walks of life who have excelled in their individual endeavours, the organization has been contributing its mite to overall societal and national development. The membership is open to anyone committed to serve the society without consideration of religion / gender. Mahavir International, Vadodara Kendra has been the proud recipient of the award in the field of Education for its outstanding services to promote education of bright and needy students of the society amongst all the centres for last five consecutive years at International Conventions of Mahavir International. Mahavir Foundation Trust (MFT), is our affiliated organisation which is registered as a Trust (Registration No E-5923Vadodara) with the Charity Commissioner and enjoys Income Tax Exemption under Section 80-G of Income Tax. We accept all donations through Mahavir Foundation Trust, which has been helping us by consistently extending financial support to our social and developmental activities.
What We Do Education - The Best Gift This has been the flagship initiative of Mahavir International since its very inception. Beginning with Adopted Schools Programme in 2001, a number of additional schemes and programmes have been added over the years to cover the entire spectrum. These include: Adopted Schools Initiative The very first initiative in 2001 continued to date - focusses on encouraging students through prizes and scholarships. Schools selected are the ones where students from weaker sections of society come for education. During 2015 - 16, Nine Schools were covered under this initiative. Drop-out Prevention Initiative focusing on primary school students. Launched a few years ago to support children in primary schools with a view to prevent drop outs at early age, particularly from families that have many children and find it hard to support education of all of them. Generally, the adverse impact is more on the girl child. ANNUAL REPORT 2015 - 16

Open Scholarship Initiative Enables any student from any school / college / university / professional course in Vadodara city to apply. This grew out of the adopted schools initiative – aimed to cover needy students from the entire city. This is the largest and agship scheme of Mahavir International, Vadodara Kendra covering students from Std. 8th onwards and all the way up to professional courses / university education. Interest-free Loan Initiative Educational expenses go up as students move to higher standards / higher education. In keeping with the guiding p r i n c i p l e o f c o n t i n u i t y, Interest-free Loan Initiative provides for larger assistance to students in higher secondary schools as also to students aspiring for higher education, as they move into colleges / professional courses. 04

Mentor Sponsor Initiative Brings together very bright, needy students with individuals and organizations who could provide mentoring / guidance for all-round development, leading to excellent employability. Initiative covers very bright and needy students from Std. 10th onwards. Oneto-One connectivity ensures that the students have access to sensitive mentors all the time and for all their needs Counselling of Children Given the family background, parents are typically unable to guide their children, particularly at the critical 10th and 12thstandard levels. Unfortunately, the schools attended by these students are also not in a position to effectively meet this need. In this context, some of the members and consultants who possesses expertise in different ďŹ elds act as counsellors to support student's emotional and carrier development needs. Helping the Needy - g§doXZm 'g§doXZm' works with the primary objective of helping to recycle and reuse articles from well-to-do urban homes and bring them to the economically weaker households of our society. Our motto is "LOVE ALL - SERVE ALL" and we strive to achieve this without compromising the dignity and the self-respect of the recipients. At 'MI-Samvedana', we collect articles from our generous donors and bring them to our collection centres. Here, we carefully do product wise and size wise assortment, if necessary; add value to it by repairing / stitching the article; and then distribute these to the needy through our carefully selected channels, the major one being the families of our beneficiary students. Distribution is typically done along with our scholarship distribution functions where beneficiary students are invited with their families. 'MI - Samvedna' offers an invaluable opportunity to 'Share what one can Spare' and experience the 'Joy of Giving'.
Health Ÿ We have tied up with Hari Om Seva
Trust to help the needy families for medical treatment at Sayaji Hospital and Gotri Hospital in Vadodara Ÿ We are also organising Medical
Check-ups in Adopted Schools as well as schools in nearby villages as also for our beneficiaries.

Amem Xrn A Street-to-School Initiative This is our latest initiative resulting from the realization that while the focus was on school and college going students, there were a lot of children on the streets and in slums who were not even going to regular schools. The school in such cases is taken to the children through schools in slums / streets or footpaths. We have now sixteen such centres catering to over 500 children under "Amem Xrn" Banner. The initiative has really seen tremendous involvement from citizens of Vadodara who actively assist and participate in these Centres. The children are provided all teaching materials, uniforms, school bag, shoes etc. and are also encouraged in sports and a variety of creative activities for their allround development. Field trips, movie and magic shows, sports events, fun fair etc. are just a few examples of the activities with these children. We have recently started Mentorsponsor programme at these centres through which we are enrolling close to seventy bright kids (who are not able to bloom to their potential due to constraints faced by them and their families) to better schools to unleash their full potential and ensure all-round personality development.

Annual Cultural Evening
(gm§ñH¥${VH$ g§Ü¶m) Ÿ
gm§ñH¥${VH$ g§Ü¶m has become the biggest annual event of MI/MFT and is held in February every year. The cultural programmes are presented by the beneficiary students from Adopted Schools as well as Asha Deep Centres, along with a few programmes by esteemed members. The entire performance is by amateurs associated with MI/MFT but can be easily compared with the best of professional events. A large number of donors, well-wishers, teachers and children's families attend this event to get updated on the activities supported by MI/MFT.
Ÿ The event this year was held at
Gandhi Nagar Gruh due to a last minute cancellation of our booking at Sir Sayaji Nagar Gruh. Entire event was organized as a themebased dance competition between adopted schools with additional performance by Asha Deep children. Compering of the event was also by the members themselves in keeping with the philosophy of MI/MFT. Attractive prizes were given to the children and the schools as further 08

encouragement. The entire event received tremendous appreciation from an overflowing audience which stayed until the end to cheer all the children. Ÿ The occasion was also used to
launch the Mentor - Sponsor scheme for promising Asha Deep children, an initiative that will again become another milestone in our journey.
How We Do It - Guiding Principles Ÿ Each beneficiary is personally assessed by one of our esteemed members
through house visits etc. This due diligence is given very high importance as we want to make sure that contributions made by people like you really reach the needy and deserving students and families. Ÿ All schemes are applied without any consideration of
caste, religion or gender with the sole criteria being the merit and the need. Ÿ We do this in a manner that in no way
compromises the self-respect of the beneficiary students and their families. This is important because our belief is that we do this only because we want to return something to the society that has allowed us to prosper and do well. Basically, we do it for our own satisfaction and happiness. Ÿ Every single rupee that is
contributed for the various educational initiatives of our organization is given to the beneficiary students. There are absolutely no administrative expenses (as those are taken care of by our members through their own resources). Ÿ Increased sensitivity of young students
from well-to-do families as also the families themselves towards the social responsibility for the weaker sections of the society. Ÿ Continuity is maintained both in terms of schemes as also
in terms of the students. We strive to extend support for as long as the beneficiary student continues his / her education and needs this support. ANNUAL REPORT 2015 - 16

Future Directions Ÿ Educational support to the bright and needy from economically disadvantaged families is likely to see further expansion in line with the ultimate objective that MI must be seen as the prime contact for all such students and families in the city. Scholarship support to adopted schools will be enhanced as also the scholarship amounts for the open scheme. More and more promising children from Asha Deep centres will be moved to better schools / provided effective mentorship and sponsorship to ensure a clear long term developmental path for them. Emphasis will also be placed on skill and creativity development for promising budding artists, sportspersons from amongst the Asha Deep beneficiaries. Additional Asha deep centres will be started after assessing the needs with a target of taking the number of such centres to at least 20 by March, 2017. Ÿ Samvedana is likely to expand further as more and more citizens recognize MI / MFT as the most desirable organization for effectively carrying out such sharing and re-distribution. The programme will be extended to all Adopted Schools and Asha Deep centres during 2016 - 17. Ÿ A major new initiative in Health Care is planned to be launched during 2016 -17. The focus will be on covering Health and Hygiene related issues of the current beneficiary students and their families. The initiative is expected to become a flagship programme of MFT (just like Education) in the next two to three years.
