11/17/2016 Apple Cider Vinegar is absolutely disgusting. I’m not going to lie to you…I hate the stuff. I mean I really, truly and utterly think its taste is repulsive! OK, ok, so I’m not making a great case for good old Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) that most of the entire internet is going crazy for. But as you will come to understand about Health Form; I don’t really care what people think and I just want to tell the truth. So with that in mind you should understand something: Apple Cider Vinegar is really good for your health. Really, really good. Even though the rest of the internet is conveniently missing out the fact that it tastes awful, it is certainly true that the health benefits of ACV are meaningful and numerous. If you can just get over your initial gag reflex, you will be pleasantly surprised with how your body reacts to this magical elixir, (NOTE: it is not magical and it is only vinegar at the end of the day, but it does do wonders for your body!).

What is Apple Cider Vinegar, (and Why Are People Going nuts for it)? Do you know what people used to treat ailments, before the advent of synthetic chemical compounds? Apple cider vinegar has long been known to be a fantastic, traditional method that helps cure a number of different health issues.

To understand apple cider vinegar, we must first understand what vinegar is and for that we have to go back in time… around 5,000 years ago in fact! As with all good discoveries, (read penicillin), it was discovered by someone with some untidy habits. Essentially it was discovered when grape juice turned into wine and then after what I can only imagine was a long time…into vinegar! Upon its discovery it was used to preserve food, but obviously after many years of people eating vinegar infused food, somebody clocked onto the fact that people were getting healthier and decided that it must be an amazing, healthy antidote to almost every single ailment imaginable. I actually find this interesting because they must have eaten a ton of vinegar flavoured food, but still decide it was worth using to help with their health. However I am glad that they saw past this and pushed onwards with it, because it meant that we now have a massive history of evidence to look back on and see it benefits.

A little bit more history You may have heard of an ancient Greek named Hippocrates, of the Hippocratic Oath fame? Well he used apple cider vinegar for a myriad of reasons including but not limited to: Poison Ivy Croup Stomach aches Diabetes Although vinegar actually means “sour wine” in French; it can really be made from any kind of carb that is possible to be fermented, which includes apples of course!

The traditional method of making vinegar (PDF), is to leave it for a very long time to ferment and become very rich in certain healthy components like: Acetic acid Gallic acid Catechin Epicatechin Caffeic acid These components give vinegar its incredible antioxidant and antimicrobial features, along with many other quite amazing benefits. As reported in Medscape General Medicine:

“The slow methods are generally used for the production of the traditional wine vinegar, and the culture of acetic acid bacteria grows on the surface of the liquid and fermentation proceeds slowly over the course of weeks or months. The longer fermentation period allows for the accumulation of a non-toxic slime composed of yeast and acetic acid bacteria, known as the mother of vinegar.”

“Mother” of vinegar, a cobweb-like amino acid-based substance found in unprocessed, unfiltered vinegar, indicates your vinegar is of the best quality. Most manufacturers pasteurize and filter their vinegar to prevent the mother from forming, but the “murky” kind is best, especially if you’re planning to consume it. Basically, vinegar is fantastic for a whole raft of things, not limited to merely your health. So I will go through this massive list and break it down into different sections. Feel free to jump to whichever point you are most interested in.

10 Health Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar Using ACV is not a doctor approved method for being healthy, and sort of an old wives tale to be honest. That said the anecdotal evidence is pretty overwhelming and I can also vouch for the fact that I feel better in myself and my hair and skin is much better after just 2 months of taking it daily. Vinegar is known to have a beneficial effect on the body’s blood sugar levels and is also anti-glycemic. It is believed that the acetic acid contained in vinegar might lower blood sugar through preventing complex carbohydrates from being completely digested, which is either accomplished through the bodily tissues increasing their glucose uptake or through accelerating gastric emptying.

Diabetes According to one theory, vinegar may inactivate some digestive enzymes which break carbohydrates down into sugar, which slows complex carbohydrates being converted into sugar into your bloodstream following a meal. That provides more time to your body to pull sugar from your blood, which prevents the spiking of your sugar levels. A great deal of research also supports vinegar being used as a form of diabetic treatment. According to one study vinegar treatment resulted in improved insulin sensitivity for 19% of people with type 2 diabetes as well as 34 percent of individuals with pre-diabetes. Another study found that when two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar was taken before going to bed it lowered blood sugar levels by as much as 6 percent by the next morning in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Heart Health Heart health is supported by vinegar in several ways. The Journal of Food Science explains that polyphenols like chlorogenic acid, which apple cider vinegar has high levels of, may inhibit oxidation of LDLS and make improvements to health through the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. It was shown by one study that in laboratory rats vinegar can lower cholesterol. Another study with rats found that the acetic acid contained in vinegar could lower blood pressure. In animal studies it has also been found that vinegar decreases VDL levels (damaging type of cholesterol) and triglyceride levels.

Weight Loss Vinegar might also help with losing weight. It appear that it has an anti-obesity effect through increasing satiety, which reduces how much food you consume. For example, when a small dose of vinegar was consumed by volunteers with a high-carb meal (juice and a bagel) they ate less food during the rest of the day. This reduction equaled around 200-275 calories per day. This amount was enough to lose around 1.5 pounds in a month. Other research also found that taking vinegar with bread lowered insulin and glucose responses and also increased satiety levels.

Apple cider vinegar, in clinical trials, has been to shown to slow cancerous cell growth inside the prostate ¹.
