READING WRITER’S OPINION
See Glossary on pages 85-86
Some questions will ask you to decide what the writer’s opinion or attitude is. To answer such questions, you will need to look for hints, such as words, phrases or expressions that show the writer’s positive or negative feelings.
READING: EXTRACT 1 The following extract is from an email that Brian received. MailBox
Dear Brian, What a pity you aren’t here with us in Montreal! We arrived last night and I can’t wait to visit all the interesting places there are in this city. People say that Canada is very similar to the USA, but I completely disagree. I would say the atmosphere here is a lot more European than American. Of course, there’s also the language difference to consider. Although everybody knows English, it's actually French that is spoken in most places.
1. How does the writer feel about visiting Montreal? a. excited b. indifferent c. disappointed d. scared
Here, by saying ‘What a pity you aren’t here with us’ and ‘I can’t wait’ it’s obvious that the writer is excited about his visit to Montreal.
READING: EXTRACT 2 The following extract is from a magazine article about mobile devices. A smartphone or tablet can connect young children to the world outside the four walls of their classroom and give them access to knowledge they are not taught at school. What’s more, there are many games and interactive activities on mobile devices that are not about school subjects but are still useful for children. To help your children get the maximum benefit from it, you should explore the device together, ask them questions about what they're doing and show them how to use it. Of course, you should not ignore the value of reading a book or spending time outdoors.
READING: EXTRACT 3
2. In general, the writer
introducing
children to mobile devices. a. dislikes b. ignores c. encourages d. avoids Here, the writer mentions some applications and advantages of mobile devices. Then he tells parents to help children ‘get the maximum benefit’ from such devices. He also advises parents to show children ‘how to use’ such devices, so he is obviously encouraging parents to introduce children to them.
The following extract is from a magazine article about vacations. s allows us to escape Going on vacation to remote location ines and get the rest and from our noisy, stressful, daily rout cheaper than going on relaxation we need. TASK a
Imagine your best friend wants to get a pet. You would like to suggest the best pet for him or her. Describe the pet, the benefits of owning it and the responsibilities involved. Be sure to support your answer with reasons, explanations and examples.
Recently, a friend of mine decided that she would like to get a pet and asked me for advice about what to choose. This is what I told her.
To begin with, I said that getting a dog would be a very good idea. Pets such as goldfish and hamsters may not need a lot of care, but they are not such good companions as dogs. If you train your dog properly, it will become your best friend and protector as well. Dogs can learn many things, such as fetching a ball or lying down when you tell them to, so you can build a strong relationship with them. Most dogs also love playing so they are great company. For instance, they can keep you busy running in the park with a ball or even swimming together in the summer. Finally, dogs are very sensitive to human feelings. Your dog can provide great comfort because it will love you and always be there for you, even in difficult moments.
However, I also explained to my friend that having a dog involves many responsibilities. Since dogs are so intelligent, they need human company. In other words, you must spend some hours a day playing with your dog, taking it for walks and teaching it tricks, or else it will get bored. Dogs also need proper feeding, baths and visits to the vet.
To sum up, I told my friend that dogs may need a lot of care, but they are loving, wonderful animals and they make perfect pets.

NOTES - Transcripts 1. M: Excuse me, how long is tomorrow’s tour of the city? F: The tour that’s included in the package price is a morning tour sir, and it ends at noon. However, there’s another tour that goes to some less famous, but equally interesting sights. That starts at one and ends at four. M: Definitely sign me up for that! How much does it cost? 2. M: Listen madam, I’ve been working in this city for almost 15 years and I’ve never heard of a “La Croix” Street, North Gardens. Do you know how to get there? F: Yes, but it’s a new street, in a new part of North Gardens. I’ll recognize the neighborhood once I’m there, but I’m not exactly sure how to get to North Gardens from here. M: Look, I know how to get there, but you’ll have to show me exactly where La Croix Street is, OK? 3. F: Hi Steve, what are you doing in here? M: Surprise, surprise! I’m cooking. I’ve been following this recipe for vegetable soup. F: That’s great, but look, it says here: as soon as the vegetables start to boil, lower the heat and let the soup simmer for about twenty minutes. You’ve still got it on full Steve ... and it looks as if it’s ready to explode! 4. M: Do you like this coat? F: That’s not a coat Mike; it doesn’t have sleeves. You’re going to get sick if you wear that on a day like today! It’s freezing out there! How about this one? M: It’s too big and I don’t like the fur on the collar. F: OK, what about these ones over here? Look, here’s one with buttons down the front. M: Hmm, that’s much better. 5. F: The dinner party’s great, but we’re running out of wine. M: We’ve got plenty of beer and soda, though. Can’t we drink that when the wine’s finished? F: What! We can’t switch in the middle of the meal! What will our guests think? M: I suppose you’re right. I’ll run down to the convenience store then. 6. M: Honey, did you speak to your boss about your vacation? F: Yes, but he won’t let me take that extra week I wanted. So I’m still left with only 14 days. M: Don’t worry about it. By the way, I stopped at the travel agent’s and they have a special offer on a 10-day river cruise. What do you say? F: Sounds OK to me. 7. M: Excuse me, I’d like to return this shirt. It’s too large for me. F: I see. Well, what size do you need? M: A medium, I guess. The problem is that someone crossed out the “L” for large on the label and wrote an “M”. F: Hmm, that’s strange. Well, the price tag is still attached so go ahead and get another one.

Questions 9-11 are based on the following conversation between two friends, Tina and Ted. M: Tina, I’m thinking of changing my plans for my birthday party. F: (9) What? It’s the last minute Ted. Your party’s in two days! How will you let everyone know? M: It’s not such a big deal. I’ve only invited 10 good friends, after all. I’ll just call them up. I was going to have it at Tom’s Jazz Club, (10) but everyone’s complaining. They want to go somewhere more lively; you know, somewhere where we can dance. F: I disagree. It’s your birthday and you should do whatever makes you happy. Your friends can go dancing whenever they want. M: (10) Yes, but I do want everyone to have a good time. I could always go to a jazz bar another time, with a friend who appreciates it, like you. You enjoy jazz, don’t you? F: Actually, I’m more of a rock music fan. But since it’s your birthday, we should go wherever you want. M: You mean to tell me that you don’t like jazz either? (11) That’s it - I’ve made up my mind - we’ll celebrate my birthday at that new dance club that’s opened up on Bay Street. Questions 12-15 are based on the following conversation between a husband and wife. M: I’m really excited about trying out that new Lebanese restaurant tomorrow. (12) It’s been ages since you and I had a quiet romantic dinner together Lily. F: Yeah, about that … sorry Jim, but I invited Gary to come out with us. Lately, all he’s been doing is sitting in front of the TV. M: (disappointed) Oh great, so we’ll be entertaining him all evening. I really wish you had asked me first. F: Look Jim, (13) Gary is my baby brother and I’m worried about him. Ever since he and Vivian broke up, he doesn’t leave the house. (14) He used to be happy and interesting, not this sad, boring person he’s turned into. Hey, maybe you could ask your new secretary to come along. She’s single, isn’t she? M: No thanks. I’d prefer not to get involved in other people’s lives. I’ve got an idea! Tell him our plans have changed so we can go out, just you and I, as originally planned. (15) Then on the weekend, I’ll invite him out for a coffee and we’ll have a chat, man to man. What do you say? F: Thanks, I really appreciate it.
13. What is Gary’s relationship with Lily? a. They are brother and sister. b. They are mother and son. c. They are colleagues.

Questions 16-20 are based on the following conversation that takes place in a school classroom. F: Hello class. Please sit down at your desks and (16) make sure that you and your partner have a working microscope. The light near the bottom of the microscope should be switched on. (16) Next, one of you should look through the eyepiece. Is something wrong Dean? M: Yes Mrs Thompson, (17) our light isn’t working. The switch is broken. F: You see class; this is what happens when you aren’t careful with your equipment. (18) It seems the students who used it before you have broken it. I clearly remember that it was working last period. Dean, use my microscope, but please be careful. It’s more expensive than the others. M: Okay. Where should I put this one? F: Bring it up to me. I’ll send it off to get fixed. Now, everyone take a look at your bee under the microscope. These bees have been put in alcohol. (19) This keeps them in perfect shape, as if they were alive. I’ve handed out (20) a sheet with a list of questions you need to answer about your bee. They mostly have to do with the wings, legs and head of the bee. I also want you to draw a picture of it. M: Mrs Thompson, what if we’re bad at drawing? F: Dean, artistic talent isn’t necessary. I just want to be sure that you are able to identify all the parts of the bee. And class, be aware that there will be a test on bees next week, so (20) make sure you fill out the sheet accurately. Alright then, does anyone else have a question?
PART 3: EXTENDED DISCOURSE In this section you will hear an extended monologue and an extended dialogue. Before listening to each passage, you will read questions. You will listen to each passage twice, and then you will answer a series of questions that appear in your test booklet. Preparing for an exam 21. Questions 21-30 are based on the following talk by a Spanish language teacher who is preparing his high-school class for a Spanish exam. M: Today class, I want to give you some advice about next week’s exam. For most of you, (21) it will be the first time you’re taking an external exam. By external, I mean not organized by the school, but by another authority - in this case, the Spanish Language Institute of America. If you pass, your certificate will be recognized by governments and businesses all over the world, so I hope you all realize how important this is.

Having said that, the first piece of advice I want to give you is to be calm. Being calm on the day you sit for the exam is vital to your success. (22) Research has shown that when you feel nervous, your memory does not work as well as it usually does, so try to relax. On the night before the exam, don’t study anything. If you do, you may come across something you don’t know so well, and this will definitely stress you out! You need to do something relaxing and get a good

24. What does the teacher say about the students’ grammar review? a. It’s too late to do it now. b. He will help them do it this weekend. c. They were supposed to have done it earlier. 25. What does the teacher suggest that the students do in the next few days? a. study Spanish with their friends b. try to avoid thinking about the exam c. do things in Spanish that are fun 26. The teacher suggests the students bring a watch because . a. it will help them keep track of time b. there will be no clocks at the exam center c. they may be late for the exam otherwise 27. What does the teacher say about changing answers? a. It is the best way to find the right answer. b. It should only be done if you are sure. c. It is better not to check your answers at all.
night’s sleep. Remember - (23) the exam starts at 9 and you have to be (21,23) at the Spanish Language Institute on Park Avenue half an hour earlier. Secondly, (24) you should have already completed your grammar review by now. If you haven’t, please do so this weekend, but don’t overdo it. (25) The best way to study so close to the exam is by simply listening to Spanish music, watching Spanish videos and reading things in Spanish that you enjoy. There’s no way to know what will be on the exam - it’s not a school test and it wasn’t written by me. What counts most is your general knowledge of Spanish, and not necessarily specific words and expressions.
Now, about the day of the exam. (26) Bring a watch with you so that you can be aware of the time. This is especially important for the composition. By now, after all the work we’ve done, you should have a good idea of how long it takes you to write a composition. (26) However, many students find that the y run out of time when they are doing the real exam. That’s because you’re more nervous. Also, (27) check your answers, but only change them if you are certain you were wrong. Statistics have proven that two out of three times, your first answer is correct.
Finally, one last piece of advice about the composition and the interview. You do not need to be entirely honest. I mean, (28) you can stretch or change the truth a bit, but don’t claim to be a CIA spy on a secret mission to save the world! Let’s say you have to write about your star sign and (29) you don’t know how to spell Sagittarius. Just say you are a Cancer. Trust me, your examiners won’t check. Or (30) if they ask you about your hobbies and you haven’t really got any, make something up just to prove that you can speak Spanish. Say that you play a sport or an instrument - but try to keep it realistic. Remember, this is a language exam, not a test about you.
OK, does anyone have any questions?
28. Why does the teacher mention a CIA spy? a. as an example of a good idea for a composition b. as an example of what examiners expect c. as an example of an over-exaggeration 29. What does the teacher say about star signs? a. It is not necessary to be honest about them. b. It’s best to say that you don’t believe in them. c. It’s a good idea to avoid talking about them. 30. When should students make up an answer about hobbies? a. if they don’t understand the examiner’s question b. if they see the examiner is losing interest c. if they don’t have any hobbies

34. How long has the man been smoking? a. for twelve years b. for twenty years c. since he was 20 years old
Then, you’re going to heal and become even stronger than you were before ... the natural way; using herbs, fruits, vegetables, exercise and relaxation. I think I should do it gradually, like cut down from one pack a day to half for starters.
35. What does the man want to do about his smoking habit? a. He wants to continue smoking. b. He wants to quit slowly. c. He wants to quit immediately.
F: It’s not ideal, but a step in the right direction I suppose. The exercise will really help too. Trust me, once you start getting into shape you won’t want cigarettes as much. To get started, I suggest you hire a personal trainer who can show you how to work out safely and

(37) After a workout I always feel so much more relaxed.

M: You actually make exercising sound like fun. To be honest, it’s been so long since I’ve worked out that I wouldn’t even know where to start. F: Super! Here’s his card. Now let’s talk about nutrition and herbs, another important part of your recovery. Get ready to start eating a lot of fruits, vegetables and whole grains - they are going to become the largest part of your diet. The next big change is that you must (39) limit or completely stop eating red meat because it increases the risk of heart attack. (40) As for herbs, you should start with ginseng, mint and garlic. I’ll make up a small box for you to take home, and we’ll meet again in one week.

It was so nice bumping into you at the mall last week. I wish we could have had more time to catch up, but you were obviously too busy serving the other customers in the store. Besides, I didn’t like the way your boss kept looking over your shoulder, as if you weren’t doing your job properly. I wanted to give him a piece of my mind, but I

To be honest, they’ll be relieved that I’m thinking of working because then I could help them out with my college tuition. I got accepted by Georgetown, which means I’ll also have living expenses to deal with. My parents are very happy that I got into such a fine college, but they’d

Sorry if I complained a lot back then; I think I was going thro ugh a phase but I’m over it now . Getting this job has helped me a lot because, as you know, I’ve always loved photography so it’s very interest ing to 89 be working with all different types of cam eras. Some customers want advice about the right camera to buy, and I even get a com mission if I sell more than 20 cameras a wee k.
I’ve been a salesman at Camera Sha ck for over two months now, and as a resu lt, I’ve been able to buy some new clothes. I’ve even started putting money aside for a car as well - can you believe it? Unlike you, I don ’t think college is for me, but I’m proud of you! Georgetown is a great place to stud y, I’ve heard. If you want to get a 90 job, I’ll ask around at some of the shops in the mall. I know some of the cafés with patios are hiring summer staff - if you’re interested in waitressing that is. I hear the tips are pretty good. Just say the word, and I’ll get you some 90 job interviews.
Wow - can you imagine us working in the same mall? We could take our coffee breaks together!

Losing weight with the Inspire system is easier than you could ever imagine. (A) For a monthly fee, you get access to our library of articles and recipes, our chat room, and our wonderful online apps to help you count calories, keep track of the amount of water you drink, and a lot more. At only $9.95 per month, our price is very competitive. And for an additional $24.95 onetime payment, you become a gold member, which means you have unlimited access to a trained counselor. Your online counselor will be there to motivate you, give you a pat on the back when you do well, and of course, gently reprimand you if necessary.

What you can eat on the Inspire Diet
18
Our philosophy at Inspire is that you live in the real world and must eat real food. (B) There are no special foods you are required to buy or cook, but you must reduce you calorie, carbohydrate and fat intake. Beyond that, you can eat all of your favorite foods, but you mustn’t overdo it. (C) Our ‘tracker app’ will help you out with this: when you eat something and record it, it will tell you how many calories you have consumed, and how many you have left for the rest of the day. That’s the magic of the system - it takes all the guesswork out of counting calories so you can relax and eat what you want, when you want; within measure, of course.

What makes this system stand out is the personal care you get: I need to feel that someone is looking over my shoulder, making sure I’m sticking to the diet. But I also need someone to hold my hand and pick me up when I’m feeling down - and this is what I’ve found here.

dave22: Not exactly for me. I understand the philosophy behind taking charge of your life, but I need more individual help than what Inspire offers. I’m going to try one of those diets which don’t allow you to eat tasty food. The manager at your office has handed out this pamphlet on being more environmentally friendly at work. Read the pamphlet and answer the questions that follow.
Going Green at the Office 102

Statistics suggest that most adults spend between 36 and 45 hours a week working, yet few of them show much concern for the environment at their places of work. This is especially negative if you consider that office buildings consume a quarter of the country’s energy. Here is a list of some of the things every employee can do to make a difference.
2
4
Reduce Energy Consumption Employees aren’t the ones who pay the energy bill at the end of each month; employers are. That’s why many employees don’t care about using less energy at work. Whether at home or at work, reducing the energy bill seems to be the main incentive to use less energy, but keep in mind that wasting electricity does a lot of harm in general,
6
regardless of where you are and who’s paying the bill. What can you do? Start by turning off all your equipment when you leave the office. Just turning off a 75-watt desk lamp at night can save 750 pounds of carbon emissions a year. Also remember that you use more energy when you use a screen saver on your PC than when you don’t. Moreover, your screen saver may also prevent your PC from switching into “economy power” mode when it’s not being used. However, the best and most economical rule of thumb is "if you’re not using it, shut it down".
10
Consume in Your Own Cups Being at the office for so many hours means that you will drink countless glasses of water and cups of coffee. Bring your own personal mug from home which you can refill instead of using paper cups. This will also add a personal touch to your workspace. In addition, fill up your glasses at the water cooler; plastic water bottles have done unspeakable damage to our environment and should be avoided at all costs.
16
Reduce Waste Avoid printing anything that can stay on computer files. If you must print documents, be sure to print on both sides of the sheet. And make sure you recycle all plastic and paper waste. Your company should have recycling bins placed in convenient spots, but it is your own responsibility to use them.

Reduce Commuting Arrange carpools with other employees and drive to work in groups. Find out who lives near you and take turns traveling to work in each others’ cars. You’ll have saved so much gas at the end of the month that a small loss of convenience won’t bother you. Also consider using public transport. Subway trains are not affected by traffic jams, which means that ultimately, you may get to work faster. And using buses and subways significantly reduces pollution in large cities. Do you have any suggestions of your own? The top ten tips will be published in our next pamphlet and the winners will receive energy-efficient light bulbs for one year. The importance of role models to today’s youth 2
4
6
When one hears the expression “role models”, one’s mind naturally jumps to celebrities, especially as far as young people are concerned. Therefore, it would be more than natural to assume that teenagers, heavily influenced by the media, are dazzled by well-known Hollywood stars, famous musicians and internationally renowned athletes. Role models come into young people’s lives in various ways. They are family members, educators, peers and ordinary people encountered in their daily lives. Students emphasized that being a role model is not confined to those with international fame or unbelievable wealth. Instead, they said the greatest attribute of a role model is the ability to inspire others. (B) Teachers were often mentioned

8
In reality, according to a recent survey, over 75% of teens who filled out an online questionnaire claimed that the role model for whom they had the greatest respect was not a famous personality, but a family member. It seems that the qualities that make a good role model are more complex than researchers first assumed. For example, Nancy L, a teenage girl from Wisconsin, described her role model as a woman who had a clear sense of what was important to her, making the effort to create things that would make a real difference in the world. The woman she was referring to was her favorite aunt, who was a painter and sculptor.
as examples in this case, ones that are dedicated to encouraging students, helping them push their limits and strengthen their characters.
115
119
Another quality high on the list was the ability to overcome obstacles. In addition to parents, peers often made up a large percentage of such role models. Young people are at a point in their lives when they are developing the skills of initiative and capability, so it is only natural that they admire people who show them that success in the face of difficulty is possible. (C)
36
38
40
42
A final and perhaps unexpected character trait that the youth of today admire is a clear set of values. Children admire people whose actions are consistent with their beliefs; in other words, who practice what they preach.
44
Role models help them to understand the significance of honesty, motivation and the desire to do general good. For example, local politicians who clearly struggle to improve living conditions in their cities are high on their lists of role models.
48
Perhaps what should be understood from what young people consider important in a role model is that each and every person around them affects them to a certain extent, perhaps much more than most parents think. (D) This makes it crucial for adults to be aware
54
of their influence on the young and set the best examples possible.
