CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S LETTER “There’s only one word that describes rich, dark, beautiful, and rare. I’m going to call you--Mahogany.” Quote from 1975 movie starring Diana Ross Once in our lifetime each of us will act upon something simply based upon the name or the feeling that a name/ brand evokes. I remember the day I saw the announcement: “Mahogany Vogue Magazine Coming Soon.” The name “Mahogany Vogue” rang over and over in my mind. I waited a couple of days before I called my college classmate to ask her about her upcoming project. Our visions united and our creative similarities were ironic to say the least! We worked steadfast to create a publication that will showcase Fashion, Lifestyle, and Entertainment topics through “coloured lenses”. We held photo shoots ranging across the United States and abroad to include: Atlanta, Georgia, Columbia and Charleston South Carolina, Los Angeles, California, New York, New York and Paris, France. We even had the pleasure of working with Dominique Reighard of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 10 and ANTM All Stars, Trina Braxton, Elijah Connor, renowned shoe designer Etu Evans, and Miss Antigua World and Universe—Shermain Jeremy. As though that wasn’t rewarding enough, we also worked with some of the most innovative talents in the fashion and entertainment industry. These talented individuals, who ordinarily would not have been given the chance, were given the opportunity to put their signature on the map. You will see their creativity shine throughout this issue. It is our mission, to inspire people of colour everywhere. Typically, when one thinks of a person of colour our minds wonder what defines a person of colour. I feel “colour” refers to any race, ethnicity or group whose skin is highlighted or touched with a deeper pigmentation. From Beyoncé to Mariah Carey, Salma Hayek to Jessica Sanchez; from Halle Berry to Gabriel Union, Brandy to Zoe Saldana and Kim Kardashian, and from Tyra Banks, Celines Toribio, Freida Pinto, and Naomi Campbell; they are all women of colour. We have definitely captured something “rich, dark, beautiful, and rare.” And we hope this “Model Issue” reaches the far corners of our universe and inspires someone to keep reaching for his/her dreams. Who are we? We are Mahogany Vogue Magazine! Your Life. Your Style. Your Magazine.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Dream on Purpose
A
s I looked through the pages of our very first issue, a common theme that resonated throughout was the notion to “Dream Big”. How appropriate is that idea when if it were not for the big dream of a small town girl from Denmark, SC, Mahogany Vogue would have forever remained a figment of my imagination. Having a personal dream is important, but so is fulfilling your purpose. As life would have it, our dreams and purpose may not always be the same, but I have found that when you dream on purpose, you can somehow manage to fulfill both. Some of us are born with the gift of God to sing, dance, act, write, play sports, or even become President. This reminds me of the late, great Whitney Houston, who I think we all can agree was born on purpose to play the role of Rachel Marron, in The Bodyguard and to bless the world with “I Will Always Love You” among countless others. Whitney could probably sing from the time she was born, but for many of us our purpose is not always given. We have to find it. It can be found in our everyday life experiences, both good and bad that influence and shape who we are. Listen to the whispers of your higher power and appreciate the tough times in order to be humble and thankful for the good. Consider moments of inspiration and remember them when times get tough. Truth is, we never really know how our own dreams can influence the dreams of others. There was a teacher who once told me I should become a lawyer. I didn’t become a lawyer, but her words sparked something in me that remains with me still today. I’m reminded of 12

watching the life story of Christopher Gardner in “The Pursuit of Happyness” some years ago or the journey of a woman who was once told she didn’t look the part to be a television personality. But more than 25 years later she now owns her “own” television network and the name Oprah is renowned around the world. All of these things have influenced this very moment. Influencing growth and change for the better of us all is what life is all about. My only hope for this issue and every issue to come is that you be inspired to dream big and live your purpose in style. Hope you enjoy your life, your style, your magazine! Hate Never/Love Always,

ith Summer now passed and gone, you can already begin to feel that familiar cool breeze that is so synonymous with Fall. This is by far the most perfect time of year. It’s not too hot, not too cold, and the earth-toned autumn leaves are a reminder of the beauty and power of Mother Nature. Disconcertingly though, Fall is also a reminder that another year is almost at an end and those New Year resolutions that we so solemnly swore to accomplish at the beginning of a promising year are almost forgotten. The to-do list still has one too many items due! There’s no need for panic though; there’s still lots of time to get it all done so you can wrap-up your year on a blissful and fashionable high. I don’t believe in barriers; those are figments of one’s imagination. I stand on top of my boxes. - Etu Evans
ETU EVANS by Tshom b e C r u m le y
Hi Etu! How are you? Do you have a couple of moments to talk? I’m sitting here in a Chinese restaurant. No oxtails today. Today, I’m in a bowtie kind of mood. They cross genres of people, very fresh for high end designers ... Today I’m just working on bow ties and going through different leather samples.
Best Selling Author Les Brown says, “If you have a dream you want to make happen, this is the person you must listen to.” Etu Evans’ beguiling creations have captured the attention of Ducati, Parisian fashionistas and publications such as German Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Spanish Marie Claire, Essence, Vibe, In Style (UK), and Women’s Wear Daily. His designs have adorned the soles of Halle Berry, Beyoncé, Tyra Banks, Iman, Lil Kim, Danny Glover and Erykah Badu. He has been featured on the Hottest Designer segment of The View, VH1’s The Fabulous Life of Tyra Banks, America’s Next Top Model, Good Morning America, Fox 5’s Good Day New York and Access Hollywood.
“Let me get your email before we forget. I am ready whenever you are,” says Etu Evans, shoe mogul originally from Orangeburg, SC, who has lately been spending his time between NYC and Italy. Etu Evans serves as an example of a person who as a child was diagnosed with a learning disability, and who became according to Shuz Magazine “The strongest contender in the Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo arena.” The New York Times agrees stating, “Etu Evans So what makes you Etu Evans? has turned the world upside down on First, there is only one. So What’s Next? I’m moving my focus into opening two luxury retail locations in SOHO NYC and London. I just recently got back from a trip to Italy where I had some amazing samples made for my new focus. I am putting my locations in the fashion capitol of the US, and London is the newest fashion capitol of the world. My long term goal is to have a location on Madison Avenue but the energy of SOHO is electric. The museums, the designers... You could just have an entire day in SOHO. So my next Lifestyle Editorial area we will be featuring is SOHO; this time we are featuring Kew Gardens in Queens. People often talk about luxury; what does luxury mean to you? First, a lot of people have no idea what luxury is. People have gotten away from craftsmanship. They are taught to look at price and they don’t understand value. They want something microwavable something quick, fast and in a hurry. Luxury is like my designs. They are progressive with a teaspoon of nostalgia. My products are hand-tuned, they have purple bottoms, impeccable welting, sculpted heels, and are made of precious stones and metals. I’m even featuring a diamond stiletto. A Diamond Stiletto! Wow! I did one for a cover made of amethyst and brocade. Lots of raw materials like barbed wire and elements from trees.

What makes you different in this industry? A lot of people think they know what they want until I give them what they deserve. People shop not only for innovative design and quality they are also shopping for the Etu Evans Experience. I like to call it white glove service delivery. For example, when I had a client in my studio in Harlem, I would have a piano player come in and play for them, offer stimulating foot massages, have warming aromatherapy exotic elixirs, and serve caviar. You want clients to fall in love with you. This is something I will introduce to my new retail boutiques. I consider my shoes Viagra without the side effect. They exude power and punctuation in them. People are stimulated by them. Another difference is magazines always focused on my women’s shoes... but I also design for men.

Any closing thoughts? We didn’t talk much about the handbag collection. We were interrupted by the train. None-the less I want to share a piece I wrote as an inspiration for a commercial for my handbags. I wrote it and stuck it on a shelf and that’s how I see my handbags. You still want to shoot my hand bag collection right? Of course, let’s schedule a pull date. Here goes… It goes like this. The Woman never really says what she wants, just what she needs. Her handbags are her lips; they constantly open and shut. They say everything about her, before she even confuses you with a kiss. That’s It I’m done!

DOMINIQUE REIGHARD by Mahogany Chappelle-Gadson
You can’t be an America’s Top Model fan, and not know the walk, the talk or the look of former Top Model hopeful, Dominique Reighard. The former ANTM Cycle 10 contestant, and fourth runner-up, has made more than just a name for herself. A mother of two from Columbus, Ohio, she was just like any other top model hopeful who stood before Tyra Banks and her panel on that faithful day. As the song says, she wanted “to be on top.”
way to the top, Dominique Reighard is an international star on the rise to becoming the world’s next top model! After a long day of shooting, not to mention getting caught in the rain during our location shot, Dominique and I finally sat down for some oneon-one time to discuss her career, where she’s going, and where she came from.
waited in the conference room of Taylor Ector Studios in downtown Atlanta, while Dominique shot a promo video for an upcoming local reality show she would be hosting.
When she entered the room, I could feel her strong, confident presence before she said a word. Her blond mane, still made up from the shoot, added at least two inches to her If you don’t know Dominique, I think already 5’9’’ frame, not counting the you will be pleasantly surprised about six-inch all black red bottoms she was what this former America’s Next Top wearing. Where did you grow up and what was life like for you growing up? I grew up in Columbus, Ohio. I come from a family of five. Oh wow! What number are you? I’m the middle child, but I have two younger brothers, so I’m the big sister. I’ve always been kind of in charge. They used to call me “little big mouth” because I was little, but I had a big mouth and I was always running around the house putting people in line. You need somebody in charge with a family of five (laughs). Describe for us the moment when you first realized that you wanted to become a model. I remember when I was a little girl, I used to watch E! Network and back in the day, E! Network was the fashion network, not reality TV show network. I remember watching the behind-the-scenes shows and I would just have my brothers record me with the camcorder doing my little model walk, and then I would flip it back to VH1 and watch “Behind the Music” or something with Mariah Carey. So I thought I was a mix between Mariah and Tyra Banks. I used to make my brothers record me with the camcorder because I was in charge (laughs). Do you still have that footage? That would be awesome! You know what? Actually, I do! It’s somewhere in my momma’s house in a box. The good thing about that is you can look back [at the tapes] and see how far you’ve come. I had the passion and inspiration to do it as a little girl and it feels good to be an adult and say I’m living out the dreams I had as a child. 66
10, and winning “Modelville”— the Carol’s Daughter contract, and then to make Cycle 17, the All-Star Cycle. I have a lot to be proud of. This past All-Star Cycle we had an opportunity to write and produce our own songs and star in our own music video. The Game directed our music videos. Tyra said, “Girl, you need to go ahead and do the dog gon’ thing” and Game co-signed. They kept calling me “JLonce”, which is a mix between Jennifer Lopez, Leona Lewis, and Beyoncé. It encouraged me to keep going, and that’s why I came out with my very first single, “On Top of the World.” After I got eliminated, I went in the studio, and started recording “On Top of the World” because a lot of girls look at being eliminated as rejection; they look at things in life as rejection, not as an opportunity to challenge yourself, or consider that there may be something better out there that is fit just for you. Not what you think is fit for you, but what God thinks. Do you still keep in contact with Being on top of the world is a state any of the girls from the show? of mind. So what was your favorite shoot on “America’s Next Top Model” and which was the most challenging for you? Every single shoot is challenging in its own way. I loved when Tyra shot me on Cycle 10. She did such an amazing job, and that’s actually one of my favorite pictures. I think probably the most exciting shoot would have to be when LaToya Jackson came to coach us. I will never forget that. She gave me some great advice, “to own everything you do.” If you make a mistake on stage, just own it! It’s ok. Michael might have messed up on a move, but he owned it. I also did a shoot on Cycle 10 with Elle McPherson for her lingerie line. She was so sweet and down to earth, so was LaToya Jackson. They both just had this spirit and energy about themselves that was priceless. You know, I model myself after that. I want to have that same energy when I work with people.

the choir that had a crush on me. I remember being so humiliated. I grew up dancing and singing, and then modeling in my pre-teen years. That’s when I started to watch those fashion shows and decided I want to do it all! To be honest with you, all roads lead to all roads. In this industry everything’s parallel to each other— modeling, acting, and singing.
its challenges, but it’s a blessing to have those challenges. There’s always someone who may be going through a more difficult situation.
People love it! Nigel actually tweeted me and said he loved the video. Mr. J loves it. I haven’t talked to Tyra, but her makeup and hair stylists are like, “OMG! We love it!” And all The video for “On Top of the of the producers from the show, are World” is very interesting and like, “Yes, Dominique!” They love funny. How did you come up with it too, but a lot of the girls [from the concept? the show] are like, “OMG, no she I was driving in the car and me and didn’t!” Yes, I did! But more than anything, that’s just being on top of the world. Being on top of the world is not about money, it’s about being happy and living life to the fullest. That’s what a lot of people don’t do. They stay in a box, and they’re afraid to follow their dreams and challenge themselves.
Who would you most like to work with in both music and fashion? I would love to work with RedOne; he’s an incredible producer. I would love to collaborate with Usher, Wyclef, David Guetta, or Mary J. Blige. That would be cool! I love me some Mary! Usher has just evolved so much, and the inspiration that you feel when you listen to Mary sing, I want to apply that to my music. Have you ever seen her perform? The chick is bad! I was like, oh yes! I felt like I was in church! Testify! I felt like getting up and running and shouting! Because that’s what she does when she’s on stage, and you just want to join her. As far as in fashion, (pause) hmmm…..There’s someone who I’d love to work with, and I can’t mention him just yet because I can’t my husband were talking; I have to speak on the opportunity right now. say it was his idea to do a spoof of “America’s Next Top Model”, but of You just had a baby recently. How involved are you with your music? Did you write any of the songs? Yes, me and the producer Jessie Cowell, he goes by the name Mick Swagger; we wrote the track together and he produced it. It was a very fun experience. I remember as I was recording it, I couldn’t wait to get it out there because the show was actually starting to air. I just wanted to show people that the road doesn’t stop when you get eliminated; you’ve got to keep going. You have a song called “Main Chick” featuring Diamond formerly of Crime Mob. Did you write that as well? How did you connect with Diamond, and who directed the video? Yes, actually I did. There are also two other writers on “Main Chick.” It was produced by Gordon Strozier from Ready for the World; he wrote “Oh Sheila” and Diamond was rapping on the track. Derek Blanks directed the video. Me and Derek were sitting around and two weeks before we shot the video, I said to
him, “I think I need a rapper on the song.” We went through a list of names, and it was so last minute. Finally, he said, “You know who would be perfect? Diamond.” We reached out to her, and the next day we sent her the track; she liked it and did her part the same day. And a fun fact—me and Diamond have the same birthday; we’re both Tauruses. It was a lot of fun, but one thing I can say from “On Top of the World” and then “Main Chick,” it was a growing and a learning experience for me. It helped me see where I wanted to focus myself musically as far as genre—pop, techno, and dance. Where can fans purchase your music? My songs can be purchased on iTunes and Amazon. They can also be purchased on Reverbnation and my website, dominiquereighard.com. You have a large Russian following. Describe a memorable fan experience. Yes, today Russia was just going in! Russia and Indonesia have just been having a lot of fun, and the Philippines. This one person came up to me and started crying and it made me cry! I’ve had people draw pictures, and create all kinds of art for me, and that’s touched me a lot. I was most overwhelmed when this girl and guy came up to me and they were crying. I was like, OMG! It’s a blessing, and to have that following overseas too; it’s even more of a blessing. I’ve had people follow me in a car before. Dora [Dominique’s Publicist]: I think it’s important to point out the fact that her fan base is international and although she can’t always reach them or see them, they find creative ways to reach out to her through

Well, besides shopping, what every woman likes to do, I love going out on trails, really long trails and just listen to music. That’s my me time; that’s normally when I’m most creative, and then spending time with my family; travelling all the time, spending time with family in my down time. When we just sit around as a family and we’re watching “Law and Order” or “CSI” or I’m watching the Disney Channel with my daughter or reading a book with my baby. I look forward to those moments. What’s the secret to having no stretch marks after two children? Ok, you know I really don’t know if there is a secret, because I think genetics plays a part in it. My mother had five kids—very tall, thin, modelesque, and she had no stretch marks. But, girl I was up with that vitamin E, fish oil, anything that was oil! (laughter)….cocoa butter, anything! I was rubbing anything that was greasy and oily on my stomach every five minutes. I said this is not gonna happen to me! Me and my husband would be in the car, out to dinner, and I would be like, hold on a second. He’d say, “What are you doing?” I was constantly rubbing oil on my stomach. And then I drank water all day long, every day. And never scratch your itch, just rub. They say when you itch, that’s what makes the stretch marks come. And moisturize the moment you find out you’re pregnant. Don’t just do it when your stomach gets big. You have to prepare your skin to be able to stretch. What has been the highlight of your career and what goals are presently on your radar? Finishing this album! Right now that is my main goal. I would love to get into acting and be on a sitcom. I’m
working on some movie projects that I have coming up. I think in order to be a singer or a model, you have to be an actress first. To be a great singer and to entertain, you have to be able to act to change your personality to fit that song. I love to talk, so it would be nice to have my own radio show one day. I think it’s a talent to be able to talk for two hours straight. That would be my ultimate job, radio, TV; I could have my own talk show. Or my own network, as a matter of fact! I’m thinking too small (laughter)! For the past seven years, each year has gotten better and better for me. Each year, I challenge myself to do better than I did the year before. I try to set realistic goals for myself. I have a realistic goal checklist and then I have an unrealistic one. I think if you focus on that foundation, you can’t go wrong. We get so caught up on “well, I’m going to drop 10 lbs. this year.” No! Why don’t you start by taking out the trash or putting the toilet paper on the roll (laughter). You’ll get to that 10 lbs., but you need to create a routine of just doing the things that you know you’re supposed to do! So I
focus on the small things, and I hold myself accountable for where I am at the end of every year. All I do is just dream big and put one foot in front of the next. It doesn’t matter if they’re big steps or baby steps, as long as you’re taking steps forward that’s all that matters.
me, and then I think of new ideas for it. CSI, I had an opportunity to audition for the show on Top Model. I’d love to do that show as well and also “Dexter.” And if they could bring “Girlfriends” back! I would be so perfect for that show! MV: LETS START WITH THE OBVIOUS QUESTION…WHO ARE YOU? @iAmChas. Literally, I am Chas. I’m an African-American male and a college graduate with no children, who has never been married (Although I am currently dating the woman who will one day be my wife). I’ve worked for major TV networks, been featured on a couple of nationally broadcast TV shows, traveled the nation speaking at numerous colleges and universities, and I currently write for a hit show. I’m a writer, in every sense of the word. I’m a journalist, a poet, a screenwriter, and novelist.

Model Behavior… Dear Chas, I am a late 20’s/early 30’s something woman who is just getting out of a 6 year relationship. While I am not looking to dive back into anything serious immediately, I would still like to conduct myself in a manner that is respectable. I’ve recently begun exposing myself to the dating game, only to find that many of the rules of the game have changed. I seem to have a great chemistry with my dates, and I enjoy the time we share together, yet dread the end of the nights. At the end of each date there seems to be this inevitable awkward moment where it feels perhaps I should invite my date in, or keep the night going. In my early 20’s when I dated frequently this would have been taboo and something I would have never considered, however these days anything seems to go, and I am not sure how to navigate the end of the night awkwardness. Can you advise…. It accepted or expected to have sex on the first date? Do men respect women who give it up on the first date? Sincerely, Ms give it up 82
SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2012
Dear Ms. Give It Up, This is a tightrope walk. Deciding how a man will feel about you if you hold out for too long or give it up too quickly can give you migraines for days. As a man, when going on a first date I never expect sex. Has it happened? Absolutely! Was I pleasantly surprised? Not always. There has been times where the chemistry was undeniable and we both wanted to dive into the deep end at the close of the night… so we did. Needless to say I am no longer with any of those women. So what happened to the women I was into, who gave it up on the first night? I continued to respect them and likened their decision to a woman who knows what she wants and isn’t into any waiting games. We are all familiar with the waiting games ala Steve Harvey’s 90-Day Rule from the film Think Like a Man, which had Megan Goode’s character ready to die of hypothermia from endless cold showers before she broke down and gave it up. I think there’s an air of confidence in a woman who knows what she wants, goes for it, and is able to live tomorrow with no regrets. For me, if she was a jump-off and gave it up on the first night, she’d probably never hear from me again. If she was Ms. Right, we’d probably joke in the future about how she gave it up on the first night. With that said, Ms. Give It Up, you’ve got to know the worth of the man you’re dealing with before deciding to give it up on the first night. How do you asses this? Ask yourself: Does he seem that into you? Do you only communicate via text message? Or do you have long phone conversations before the first date? You’ve got to feel it out and know where you fall in his priorities. You might just be a jump-off. You might be an easy lay. Or you might be his future. But you’ve got to use your discretion and woman’s intuition in determining what you want, what you are to him, and on deciding on whether or not to give it up on the first night. Always, Chas

aris is no stranger to fashion. It has been a focal point since the 16th century showcasing high-end designer clothing, shoes, and accessories. The designs of the Old French Royal Courts exuded sophistication, elegance, and style while more trendy and stylish lines are currently being created by modern day French designers. Old or new, French fashion gives the world glimpses of glamour and refinement while constantly implementing fresh ideas through new design approaches.
Built during the mid 1600’s to early 1700‘s under the reign of King Louis XIV, Paris received a boost in the country’s economic power as King Louis didn’t allow the import of goods from other countries. He shaped the French industry to become the largest producers of luxury fabrics such as silk and lace which were then exported throughout Europe.

Television, the Montel Williams and Tyra Banks Show. Keisha’s last name, Esprit, is French for spirit and it has become her habit to leave the stamp of her individual spirit on everything in which she is involved. Today is another busy day for athlete, model, actress, and author Keisha Esprit. We recently caught up with Keisha at the PLITZS New York Fashion Week event. This was Keisha’s first runway show of this kind. She recalls how she had to walk in size seven shoes when she is a size nine, how the ankle strap fell off of a pair of shoes she was wearing, and how she had to hold her composure so that she wouldn’t fall. Esprit modeled for four of the international designers at the event. The author of three books, and a former track and field star, Esprit holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Transportation (Urban Planning). She is the recipient of the International Society of Poets’ Honorary Editor’s Choice Award, a seven time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics all American sprinter, National Collegiate Athletic Association Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference five time medalist, NCAA Division I regional competitor record breaker in the 100,200, 400 meters, 4x1 and 4x4 relays, paired with appearances on ETV Educational 94

How was it growing up in Barbados? Growing up for me was very relaxing. Barbados is more developed in education. It is a very unique and exotic place. The food, the culture, it’s beyond explaining. One has to experience it. I would trade nothing in the world for how I grew up.

What advice would you give someone who wants to become an author? You must go hard, very hard because the literary world is one of the most difficult industries to be a part of. The majority of the public doesn’t read a lot. It’s easier for them to watch a movie, listen to music or hear by word of mouth than to sit patiently and absorb vocabulary. So that in itself makes being an author very intricate and difficult to reach the majority. An author must place 100%energy into the act of the art which consists of marketing, book signings, participating in donations and guest speaking for the public to know they can present a voice of dynamic messages to relay to society.

Who/ what inspired you to become a writer? Something within myself, no particular individual. I guess it’s innate, natural, an inborn thing. The closest inspiration would have to be the genetic connection of my two parents. Overall, I believe it is just something that God wants me to continue to do.
Between being an actress, athlete, model and author, which one is most demanding? From my experience, I would say modeling is most demanding. Acting is creating and playing a role of a character you are not, which can be difficult. Nevertheless, with professional classes that can be rectified. Style, charisma, and the voice! Elijah Connor’s got it all! Debuting his freshman album later this Fall, Elijah has the wisdom of an industry vet’. Get to know Motown City’s own, R&B Prince. Where did your love for music begin? My love for music began when I was about seven years old. You know, growing up in the church I was always around music. Music was a very important piece in the church and sometimes musicians or singers wouldn’t show up or they would be late, so my mom would give me that side eye meaning go jump on the keyboard or drums or grab the mic; so I started performing and singing pretty early. In addition to music, you’ve done acting as well. What projects have you worked on? Yes, in addition to music I have done acting as well. I toured with the play “My Brother Marvin,” which was the Marvin Gaye story – the Vision of Zeola Gaye, his sister. I did some background work on the Sister Act II soundtrack, Barry Manilow, toured with Diddy, as well as Aretha Franklin. Was your reality TV experience what you thought it would be? But don’t feel sorry for this diva, or she will “Beg your pardon”. In the mist of her lows, Trina also experienced several remarkable milestones in her career. She graduated from college and released her first solo single, “Party or Go Home” which became a huge dance anthem for the summer. She is expanding her brand by opening a new clothing and accessory boutique in Atlanta next year and there’s even more in store for the selfproclaimed “Black Britney Spears” in the months to come. Trina gives us a hint of what’s next for her in this very candid interview as she talks about everything from regret and infidelity to why it is so important for her to prove to the world that she can stand on her own……
She has a radiant confidence that is so electrifying; we all felt it when she entered the room. I must admit, I was more nervous than I thought I would be, after all, she is a Braxton— music royalty! But my mood quickly changed from nervous to at ease with just two simple words:
family behind me, and I wanted to do something that would showcase my personality, and who Trina is. That’s why it’s so fun, and bubbly, and so dancey, and just out there. It captures everybody! It’s like everyone is invited to this big huge party because that’s just who Trina is. You know I never meet a stranger, and my life right now is just all about fun and just having a good time. Of course, you know (pauses), not too much fun, but yeah, put it all in perspective. However, I want to embody who Trina was. The song is very bubbly, and it’s very, very free-spirited, and that’s who Trina is. Have you received any criticism from anything that’s happened on the show [Braxton Family Values]? Well, of course you know there’s always going to be some opposition, and sometimes no matter what you do people always want to hold on to the negative. But my mom being the positive person that she is, she has always instilled in us there is no one greater than you but God.

Well, the next time I see you I’ve got to get you some squirrel nuts. Oh my goodness! You know what squirrel nuts are? Yes! Are you kidding me? (laughter) So, what do you want your boom booms [fans] to know about you that they may not get to see on the show? When people watch Braxton Family Values every week they get a glimpse of our lives for only an hour. What I want my fans to know is that I am multi-faceted, there is more to me than just a party-girl. I believe in academia, as you all can see I just got my degree in communications. Actually I’m a very, very harsh business woman, and you know I believe in having more than one thing under your belt because this reality stuff, this is not going to last me forever. There’s more to me than just a pretty face, there’s a little bit of brains (laughs)! Even though I enjoy having fun, I believe in putting everything in perspective and having a balance in everything. And one hour a week, it can only portray but so much of one person. And you know, just like with my single, “Party or Go Home”, I put that out myself under my own company Soltri Entertainment. I’m pretty true, and I’m a no-holdsbarred kind of business woman but most people aren’t going to see that. But, if, because I’m not telling you any secrets (clears throat)….If we decide to go and do any other seasons (clears throat again), you’ll see a lot more of that from Trina.
Right now I’m not looking for any major labels. Right now, I’m doing it the Trina Way, because there have been a couple labels that have approached me saying we can do this for you, we can do that for you, but they wanted to change me. They want to keep you in a box, especially when you’re black artist they want to keep you urban, but that’s not the type of artist that I am. I am a pop, dance, really retro-pop artist, and I want to keep control of what I do for now unless I am married to the right prospect I think I’m going to stay with myself because I know what I want, and I just want to portray myself a certain way. And I am not trying to be in competition with my sisters. You know, Toni being an adult contemporary artist, and Tamar being an R&B artist, I am so pop! And everyone knows it. I am completely different than the rest of my sisters. And I need that to be discreet.
I needed to prove to the world that I can stand on my own two feet as Trina. You know, like I said if the right marriage comes about and I end up signing with a label, I’m not opposed to it, but for now I’m doing things on my own. As an artist before as The Braxton’s we’ve been signed under Atlantic and Arista and LaFace and all those other labels. You know, when it’s yourself you take nothing for granted! Because not only are you putting out those check on your own, you’re re-establishing those relationships on your own and trying You’ve released the single, “Party or to make sure everything is right. So go Home” and now you’re working right now, at this point in my life on an EP, correct? I take nothing for granted, and I Yes, I am. appreciate all of my fans and everyone who stands behind Trina as her own Are you shopping your music with personal entity and brand. any major labels?
If you could have one do-over from Season 1 or Season 2, what would it be? (mumbles) The oral transaction. Yes, the infamous oral transaction! I love the word substitution by the way. It just sounds better, doesn’t it? It does, and you have started something with that word (laughter)! Well, only because I’m not necessarily sure that I regret doing it, I just regret that it was put on blast for the world to see. Not just for myself, only for my children, because what I do, I take ownership of. And being portrayed as a certain kind of person, which it is, I mean it is what it is. However, I can’t make it seem like Gabe is just such a horrible, terrible bad person. He did a horrible and terrible bad thing, but I can’t make it seem like he is the only one who stepped outside of our marriage. And I’ve owned up to what I have done. The only thing that I do dislike is this, if I may be so bold and no-holds-barred…. Please do! I don’t understand how people as a whole, I’m not going to generalize anybody or put anybody out there. I don’t understand how society can say, oh a man can do whatever he wants to do because that’s just a man being a man, but if a woman does something she’s a who’e. I’m just like seriously? Is that mentality still alive and well in 2012, really? And I refuse to adhere to a bunch of rules that I did not create or believe in. So, you know, you can have your opinions of me; I accept them. I appreciate them, however I personally don’t adhere to them.

Well, let it be known that Trina Braxton is not the only person to have had an oral transaction. Yes, why are we acting like nobody does it? Do you allow your sons to watch the show? Not really. I give them that choice. They don’t really want to watch it. My children are 17 and 14, so they’re not little babies. So they really understand everything that’s going on, and you know for me as a parent it’s really important to me and even to Gabe, to sit down and talk to the boys and explain to them what’s going on and what’s not going on, how things are edited, because when you’re watching someone and you only get one hour of their lives in a week it’s kind of hard to decipher the whole story. So it’s important for them to know the whole story. My children and I are very, very close. We are extremely close. We can talk about anything. Whatever questions that they have for me or Gabe, they know they get the true story from mom and dad. We’re parents first. If it compromises my situation with my children the show would have to take a backseat. I would not do the show and compromise my relationship with my children. You mentioned that your oldest son is 17 and both of your children are bi-racial, what was your reaction to the Trayvon Martin case? I think President Obama said it best, when he said that could be my son, and my heart goes out to the Martin Family because it could be anyone of our sons and I just pray for justice, and I pray that God gives them comfort in their time of need. And I do think that the laws need to be changed. I don’t think it’s right for anyone to shoot at someone just

No matter how long it takes I’m going to take this time out to allow that time to happen.
