LEGACY COMMUNITY CLINIC [PP]

[PERKINS+WILL][HEALTH CARE STUDIO] [2018]

Legacy Healthcare Clinics as a full-service, federally qualified Health Center has the mission of identifying needs and gaps in health related services and develops client-centered programs to address those needs. Legacy core value is “Health care as a right, not a privilege”. Houston office of Perkins+Will won the design of the Legacy Southwest clinic. I was part of the design team during the pursuit with my main focus on exterior design and I got involved in planning later in schematic design phase. Following pages give an insight into two initial design ideas which led to wining the project. Presented plans are one of the three design options provided during schematic design which can be considered the emergence of two initial concepts together. The single story clinic model encourages access and provides transparency to the surrounding community and landscape. The large floorplate is broken up by two central courtyards, allowing patients, families and staff access to natural light and fresh air. The courtyards also serve to divide the building, allowing a portion of it to be open for extended hours. The two-story clinic model creates an intimate “medical home” environment for the Legacy community. This two-story structure provides privacy and quiet from the bustle of street activity for Pediatric and OB/GYN, while encouraging access to the building and its social services on the ground floor.

INFLECTION

[AP] [UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON][FINAL THESIS] [2017]

Inflection is an infrastructure designed for pedestrians in Houston, city of highways. Constant construction and demolition of highways are leaving permanent scars on urban fabric of the city. Inflection is aimed to be a solution for one of these endangered neighborhoods. Texas Department of Transportation had released a plan for demolishing parts of the highway I45-. One of these demolitions are going to occur between two of the most pedestrian friendly urban spaces in the city, Buffalo Bayou and Sam Houston Park. Inflection is an infrastructure bridging between these two public spaces while offering variety of programs to its users such as recreational areas, promenades and specially a semi outdoor amphitheater containing public galleries and exhibitions.

TINY HOUSE [PP] [CLIENT: CARLA MUÑOZ] [VG-STUDIO] [2017]

«Tiny House» is a 1200 sqft house in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston. The design is suspended over the ground floor, originally conceived as a pure box and later folded into «origami-like» plates. The lot was abnormally small for the area (23ft x 60ft) and included tight setback regulations, thus the house rises from the ground floor to catch light and still gain some airiness. The main building body folds up towards the facade where a triangulated screen provides the living room with privacy from the adjacent street. SWARM HOUSING

[AC] [SPECIAL MENTION,DIRECTORS CHOICE] [PUBLISHED IN ARCH-DAILY] [D3 SPACE,HOUSING TOMORROW][2014]

Swarm Housing is a proposal for a future city which has with the Life- Giving as its main character, giving derives from the movement of all components such as people, networks, buildings, and is the result of a continuous evolution. The term ÂŤcontinuous evolutionÂť emerges from Adaptation on one hand and the interaction among self-organized components on the other, so as a matter of fact a system such as a city can be self-organized when each component finds its own place in the system. In Swarm Housing we illustrates a house as a single 3d component in the space, so every family can design their own house, furnish it and put it wherever they want. We have practically created giant columns able to carry the weight of the houses. Their circulation around a yard will causes applied interactions. The curves drew by columns on the land would embrace the nature. City start its evolution from a main square and evolves depend on natural or artificial components placed on its way.

KATY PRAIRIE CONSERVANCY [AP] [UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON] [2016]

Katy Prairie Conservancy is a community with the goal of educating people about in danger nature and species of Kay Prairie in Houston, Texas. To expand their activities they need to provide people with range of activities, from as short as participating in a seminar to staying in Katy Prairie for few days to explore and learn about Katy Prairie. The main challenge of the project was to provide space for required activities such as, Seminar rooms, bunk house( for student tours), kitchen, gathering area, exhibit area, offices, gun storage ( Katy Prairie work in collaboration with hunters to control species population) and 12 suites for long stays. This Project evolves considering two main points: first, building need to achieve its maximum adaptability with nature to reduce energy consumption. Design of the adaptive façade and shape of the roof were main elements of this decision. Second, separating the 12 suites from the main building and turning them into movable RVs with the capability of being adapted to their user’s needs. Three, turning the landscape into science garden which encourage visitors to preserve native endangered plant and animals species.

SPRAWL CATCHER

[AC]

[EVOLO SKYSCRAPER COMPETITION] [VG-STUDIO] [2016]

“Sprawl Catchers” are generated along Houston’s highways . Their location is the result of multiple urban transport speeds. These towers act as highway and street speed tracers and get implanted in strategic areas within the city transport infrastructure, where car/ bus/train speed and daily traffic get interpolated forming an optimum exit spot or ‘tower-seed’. The tower core is part of a fluid communication system with the city’s highways, speculating both with current and future transport systems that have the ability to deploy city dwellers at various levels above ground, as well as in between towers. Moreover, multiple points of entry and communication between towers and with the city’s transport system replace the exclusive access to the vertical typologies through ground floor lobby access. Elevators now serve as streets, feeding units in a similar way single houses and multiple housing units open directly from the sidewalk to the interior or through shared entrance patios to each unit’s doorstep.

GREEN DISTRICT

[AP] [SBU][UNDERGRADUATE THESIS] [2013]

The ÂŤGreen DistrictÂť is proposing a plan for reconstructing 140 units of an old residential district in Tehran. The location of the site is on the foothill of the northern mountains of the city. The lack of comprehensive plan in designing the area causes many problem for residents. Not only there is no appropriate structure -specially for this area which locates on biggest fault of Tehran- but also most of residential blocks cannot benefit from natural daylight. There is no available parking for most blocks, moreover, narrow lanes which make the district to be a safe place for drug dealers and causes habitants suffering from insecurity. All these facts are consequences of thoughtless planning. In this project I tried to propose some solutions such as constructing wide walkways or using the topography as a benefit for hiding parking areas in itself. Gathering separate buildings in three main residential blocks for increasing the security and considering a courtyard in each block for providing safe recreational areas are other soloutions for eliminating the problems.

BLUE TRIANGLE

[PP] [GENSLER] [SUMMER INTERNSHIP] [2016]

Blue Triangle (formally the first branch of Houston’s YWCA) was founded during World War I. Basis of this organization grew out of the pressing need for a central meeting place where women and girls of color could safely meet, learn and recreate. There is a mural inside of the building that is depreciating in value (down from 3$ million to 1$ million) due to poor roof condition. Objectives of this project was to re-develop blue triangle building in phases. First phase is to improve existing conditions of the building which is viable for its survival such as mechanical and electrical systems and fixing wall and roof of the building. Windows need to be replaced and be bullet proof as neighborhood is not safe during nights. All other renovations can be applied in phases as the budget comes in. For instance, replacing the entrance to make the community more inviting to the neighborhood. Rearranging classrooms and adding a visitor center leading to valuable mural of John T.Biggers. Recreation areas such as pool and gym also need renovation and there is a proposal of replacing the old mechanical room with a waiting area for parents and etc. This project is outcome of 10 weeks of 14 interns. At the end of the program we presented the project to a group of fundraisers including mayor of Houston. On year 2017 the Blue Triangle proposal formally received an RFP from the city of Houston and it is moving forward to come to reality. CYBERNETICS AND THE EVOLOUTION OF COMPLEX ADAPTIVE LIBRARY [AC] [HONORABLE MENTION][FYDA COMPETITION][2014]

Contemporary process of learning has omitted the first step of study-in a physical Architectural spacetraditionally known as study rooms- as the new achievements in cybernetics has taken its place. People no more sit in quiet empty rooms going through old books to find information, as they can get what they want just by a click in a blink of an eye. In this project we have illustrated the contemporary process of learning as an adaptive complex system in which the «study procedure» among with some other desired procedures emerge in a public spatial system. To be more specific, we have created a website in which people can follow others› interests, researches and studies; they can interact and decide to establish a discussion session. These discussions requirements create and produce our architectural needs, the spatial system. The spatial system can adapt itself to the environment beside elements like: functional elements, structural elements and aesthetic. These elements form our basic parameters. The parameters are optimized in our server, which we have defined with various rules and functions to create an adaptive sustainable architecture. In conclusion, the process of learning occurs in two categories: 1. The study: Takes place in a friendly cozy ambiance exemplifying our home. 2. Think, Create and Show: Emerge in changeable adaptive spaces created by the interconnections of people. The final structure and form creates a self-organized library which adapts itself to the users and environment.

THE PAVILION [AC][AP]

[2013[]2014]

The Pavilion is a two phase experiment in designing pavilions with having the main focus on material and structure and studying how a project forms considering unique character of each material. “The Mask” is the first experiment which formed through a group experience. “The Mask” is a monument to evoke the spirit of nature. Recycled paper has been chosen as the symbol of destructive effect of human activities on trees. “The Mask” is going to be constructed from about 400 masks that are connected by clamps in their junctions and makes it easy to be installed and unplugged. Masks are modular, which not only make it easy to be assembled but also provides a range of possibilities in plan formation. In addition to that, the chosen module for the mask along with bamboos with different heights, used as columns, enable the pavilion to accept many floating forms. If the pavilion needs to be disassembled there can be an announcement inviting people to come over, choose a mask for themselves and paint on it in any way they like. It is also possible to pack all disassembled segments and rebuild them with a new plan in somewhere else. «The Cloud» starts with an inspiration from «The Bamboo Roof» of Shigeru Ban and continued as an individual experiment. «Bamboo Roof is a free form structure with limitless geometry possibilities. The concept is at once simple and complex. It is created by a system of interlocking units, each consisting of four boards and four connection points. Although roofs are usually thought of as being solid, Bamboo Roof conveys a sense of lightness and transparency» said Shigeru Ban. Simulating a 1 /10 scale fabrication makes me to face with a significant challenge between material, structure and form. Floating property along with Structural strength, designing a column by four element while each element becomes stable in a specific angle, designing a joint that allows orientation in different axis were all get along to shape « The Cloud». This project was started in “Material, Structure, Form» course and continued afterwards till it became an installation that worth to be seen.

WHY THE MASK? o Easy construction o Low cost. Nature Friendly| Made from recycled paper o No waste| Modules will be reused as masks o Water proof|Based on prototype made o Modular design| Allow for Variety of forms in different scopes o Engaging users |Users can use modules as masks and reuse it

WHIRLING MIND[AP]

[UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON] [2015]

The evolution of human being has not yet been completed. Because human beings were created to become mature, perfect and complete. To be a perfect man means to abandon all known positive and negative feelings and habits and take on the unrecognized and unknown consciousness. A transformation into an existence where the body become lighter and transparent, the view become infinite, everything is seen and known. Turning into an existence that can exist everywhere. According to mystical beliefs it is possible for human being to be everything in a completely different dimension of consciousness. Human being has a spiritual part that does not belongs to the matter. There is a soul inside his soul, he should seek it. The greatest war for human being is the war against himself. Struggling with our thoughts and our own identity, like layers of dust on a mirror. But as soon the dusts get purified, human turns into a universe. Whatever the universe is it will be inside him. All my illustrations are based on Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi and his poems. The man who danced without following any rule. A dance from life to death and from death to immortality.
