Förändring sker konstant runtomkring oss. Förändring är något oundvikligt och det går inte att vända tillbaka. När du har genomgått en förändring kan du inte ta tillbaka den, du kommer inte vara samma person. Det påverkar dig direkt och indirekt, det går över tid och logik. Varje verklighet har tusentals möjliga förändringar och slut, allt som en faktor av de val vi konstant tar. Alla möjliga resultat våra val kan leda till beror på våra tidigare val och tidigare val och tidigare val.

Det är en oändlig cirkel av reaktioner på åtgärder av reaktioner på åtgärder.

Denna tidning kommer att genomgå en serie förändringar det kommande året, och du kommer att ta del av det. Hur du bestämmer dig för att delta i förändringsprocessen är upp till dig. Vi började genom att undersöka de olika formerna en förändringsprocess kan ha.

Detta är numret om förändring.

Change is happening all around us, constantly. Change is inevitable and there’s no turning back. Once you’ve changed, you can’t take it back.

It affects you directly, and goes behind time and logic. Every reality has thousands of possible endings, all in direct affection of the choices we make.

All the possible outcomes our choices can lead to depends on our earlier choices and earlier choices and earlier choices.

It’s an endless circle of reaction on action on reaction on action.

This magazine is about to undergo a series of changes this upcoming year, and you are going to be a part of it. How you decide to participate in the change process is up to you.

We started by examining the different outlooks the change process can have. This is the change issue.

Meeting Shirin Ebadi

Human rights do not know borders Some people devote their entire lives in order to change society.

Human rights are central when improving society to the better.

However, depending on where you work, advocating human rights does not come without risks and sacrifices. For Shirin Ebadi, working as a human rights activist in Iran has led to both imprisonment, death threats and, eventually, a life in exile. As the first female judge in Iran, Shirin Ebadi has changed the lives for especially children and women despite working in a country where human rights have been violated for many years. After the Islamic Revolution in 1979 she was dismissed as a judge but continued fighting for justice. Her work has been recognized internationally and in 2003 she was the first Iranian to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

So, what can we do help people whose human rights are being violated and how can we change our society to the better?

According to Shirin Ebadi, we should start by seeing what we can do ourselves, from our current position. In each city or country, the situation varies and different sorts of actions are needed. If you are a student here in Malmö, human rights violations inflicted on people living in Syria or Uganda may seem distant and unapproachable. However, Shirin explains how helping refugees on a local level can have a great impact. In relation to Malmö, depending on your set of skills you could for instance help refugees with e.g. language interpretation.

Mentioning the influx of refugees into Sweden and especially Malmö, she criticizes the deportations of young Afghans and the laws that limits family reunions. While Sweden is known for their promotion of human rights, Shirin argues that no country is ideal and human rights are being violated everywhere.

Because of this, she encourages everybody to fight together in order to achieve change and create a better and more equal society.

We had the great opportunity to meet Shirin at her visit to Malmö, where she spoke about her work with human rights as well as islamophobia in the West. According to Shirin Ebadi, human rights should be at core for everyone. As she mentions several times during her lecture at Malmö University, human rights have no boarders. No matter what country you come from or which passport you hold, human rights should be equal for everyone. This might sound like a nice ideal, but the question is how it should be practiced on state level. Shirin argues that secularism is fundamental, governments should be separated from religion or any other political ideology. Furthermore, democracy is also a human rights criteria. Even though people might vote for an Islamic or communist party, the government should not let their interpretations of religion or ideology overrule human rights. However, speaking about her own country, Iran, this is sadly not the case along with several other states. Therefore, it is the duty of all people to fight against human rights violations.

There is a new tattoo studio in town and it is called Something. And it is certainly something. Located along one of Malmö’s busiest streets, it still succeeds to be quite hidden and anonymous. They are three guys who started up Something: Emil, Jacob and Jakob. We met up with Jacob and Jakob to find out more.

Before the idea about the studio came up, Jacob and Jakob did not really know each other, it was through Emil and his idea about opening a studio, they were brought together.

Since all three of them had been traveling and tattooing a bit here and there the last year/years, they all felt ready for a more permanent place to work. They found that it was more logical to share it between three people and they worked well together. So, after the idea came up sometime in February this year, the studio was (kind of) ready and they opened the 1st of September.

”Okay we’re gonna open a studio, let’s do it now”

They tell us the place was quite messy when they first got the keys one month before opening, which you could have never guessed when you walk into the studio today. The studio is very minimalistic, clean and organized. There is one big room, where they have one station each plus a fourth station, so they can take in guest tattoo artists.

They say they did not want the place to look like a classic tattoo shop, and I would say that they succeeded. From the outside it is hard to guess what is inside those big frosted windows. But with their fame on Instagram and all their regular customer, both from Malmö but mainly from around the world, they do not really have a need for people to find the place just by walking past.

”Hopefully we won’t stand out at all, we don’t want a lot of people running around here” So, if you feel like visiting this place, do not just drop in, send them an email, because they have some certain rules to follow. You will find all the information on each of their Instagram. But do not let the secret around them scare you, they are actually really nice, cool and talented tattoo artists.

With a good eye for black and white tattooing. So, if you like to be inspired through Instagram, they post what they do there and if you are not already following them, it is time you start!

And remember, there is no shame in having to eat noodles for a month, if your company is a new, cool tattoo on your body.

Aktivism och normbrytande på instagram av Ebba Sigeback Aktivism och normbrytande sker överallt idag, både på gatorna, på arbetsplatserna och på internet. All den tid vi spenderar på internet kan kännas meningslös, men det finns krafter i dessa kanaler som förändrar det rådande samhället och utmanar normer.

Deras aktivism är nyskapande och når ut till tusentals människor. Selfies, instagramposter och kommentarsfält är en viktig del av utvecklingen i världen.

Det är en kraft som inte ska underskattas. Så, om du vill ta del av detta paradigmskifte som sker på bland annat instagram, bör du följa nedanstående konton. De är framtiden.

Makthavarna har växt till en stor och viktig plattform med över 22 tusen följare.

Gästpostarna får chans att dela med sig av sina erfarenheter och synliggöra den diskriminering de upplever och även få chans att diskutera med sina rasifierade syskon. Det är ett livsviktigt konto som belyser människors upplevelser samtidigt som de breddar representationen i alternativa mediekanaler. Makthavarna är en viktig antirasistisk kraft på internet idag.

DID YOU EVER FEEL LIKE YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO? WERE YOU EVER SO SURE OF YOURSELF AND ALL OF A SUDDEN EVERYTHING YOU KNEW SEEMED TO VANISH? THIS MAY BE THE CASE IN MALMÖ IN THE BEGINNING, BUT ONCE YOU DECIDE TO ADJUST TO NEW SITUATIONS, THE CITY WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU.

Last year on the 16th of August I arrived in Copenhagen Airport. I was disoriented. I was happy. I was scared.

My only purpose for the moment was to get to the hotel and think about the next day when I had to be at the university. I was lucky enough to meet a girl on the plane who was living in Sweden for some years and knew the airport and trains route very well, so I can say I have started off my journey on the right foot.

I have registered for an Introduction Program at the university, so on the first day of this program I left the hotel with my phone in my hand set on Google maps and started walking towards the university. I was thrilled by every street, park, square and other places I saw on my way. It was clear: I have fallen in love with this city without even seeing half of it. Saying the weather didn’t play a role would be a lie. However, now I enjoy some areas of the city even on a rainy day. I didn’t know what to expect and I was concerned about going in a building full of people with whom I was about to spend the whole week (I think we were around 400 international students participating). Once I got there mingling was natural and during the next days I socialized with more people than I did for the entire first half of that year. I made almost all of my friends here either during the Introduction program itself or through some other events advertised through the program (ex: Career Service’s workshops). It was a week full of mixed feelings and experiences. I discovered the university in which I was about to spend a lot of time, the tremendous spaces to work, to relax or

have lunch. I was charmed by the beautiful roof top on Niagara building. All in all, the program helped us to deal with the initial barriers for newcomers. But this is something that maybe most of you experienced at Malmö University because let’s face it: they have a very well organized system to integrate new students. But the focus of my story is on how I dealt with critic situations in order to dissolve some lacks, like finding a home!?

‘I felt like asking my dad to turn around the car and bring me back home. Where was I going, all alone, after a few days spent in the hotel?’

I have found out about the lack of housing and uncertainty, especially for students that the city faces. It was almost unbelievable that one can’t find a place to call home after a month of intense searching. My admission reply came only in mid July, which meant I could have only started looking for an accommodation by end of July. I sat down for a few days in a row in front of my laptop and pulled out all my cards I could think of. I checked all rental websites and sent dozens of messages. I joined plenty of Facebook groups and talked to so many people that it was almost impossible not to get a house. In addition, as a bit of relief for me, a bachelor classmate was admitted in Lund. We decided to stay together if we would not succeed finding something on our own. “I feel more relaxed now”, I said to myself. I had many plans B. But as the days passed, the rejections kept coming that in the end my only hope was my colleague, who was going to her university one day earlier than me. I thought I have some days to stay at the hotel, after which we will sure find something together. However, not everything goes as planned. I was on my way to the airport with my parents when my friend called me and said, with a happy voice, that she participated at a lottery in her first day and won a room in the campus. I felt like asking my dad to turn around the car and bring me back home. Where was I going, all alone, after a few days

spent in the hotel? Then I remembered how much I wanted to do this and returned to my route: destination Sweden.

The program’s schedule was so demanding that I didn’t even have time to think about my problem. After some days, my parents asked me about my findings and it was then when I realized the situation I was in. So there I was again stressed and sending messages and writing down some numbers in my notebook to call them the other day. But then that day we also had some interesting activities which took my thoughts away. As we walked through the city the worries took over my mind again. And then I said: this is the moment! I put my huge backpack in front and started to look for my notebook. As I found it I started calling some people, but the problem with those numbers was that online there were not too many details and no photos of the apartments.

But then I didn’t care. Nothing mattered at that moment more that feeling myself relieved that I did my best. With the notebook in one hand, the phone in the other one and still walking along with other students, I was waiting for someone to answer my call.

And she did. An old lady who didn’t speak English well and she didn’t understand me at all. She gave the phone to her daughter, who said “She is an old lady, living alone…” and then she gave me some other details about the place. I agreed to go and check the place on the next day.

‘That old short lady full of energy smiled at me and invited me in. A weight has been lifted from my heart.’

Once again I was walking on the street and the closer I was getting to the location, the more those questions occupied my mind: “Will this be my neighborhood? Is it a safe area? How old is the lady? Is it far from the university?” I was there. I was standing in front of the door and called to announce I arrived. Her son answered and I was pretty much scared to enter a stranger’s home full of people I don’t know. The lady came downstairs to welcome me. That old short lady full of energy smiled at me and invited me in. A weight has been lifted from my heart. I entered the house and I was almost jumping up of how happy I was. The people were very nice to me and the house seemed very cozy. I saw the room where I was about to live and it was perfect. I said I will think about it and give them an answer the next day as some other girls were supposed to come and check the room. But when I got back at the hotel and I told my mom about it she asked “Why did you say you will think about it and not saying yes right away?”

I picked up the phone immediately after I realized I knew the answer was yes all along and made the final arrangements. I was about to start a new chapter in my life and the old lady would become my new grandma, but I figured it out later. The only disadvantage was that I could move in only on the 1st of September. It meant I still had more than a week in between the hotel and my new home. Well, it just so happens that my one second instincts got me a place to stay for that week, as while we were having a final party at the Introduction Program I met a girl from the Student Union. I’ve heard about The sofa project they have, and after checking that no one else needs her extra room anymore, she was more than happy to host me for a week. That is how I made a new friend and experienced once more that networking for students is one of the most important keys, especially in Malmö.

Malmö is my home now and I feel like the city is taking

care of me all the time. Every time I get lost while biking around the city, I always end up where I planned to, and as a bonus, I get to know new places and routes. I think if you really believe something is possible, you can accomplish anything. Every day of your life when you try something new and different than what you did before, is a step forward in this process of growing, of developing and understanding that we don’t have to plan everything. Some of the unplanned things may turn out to be the best moments in a lifetime. I also learned that meeting people and socializing made me look at things differently and manage some situations better.

My general advice for all the students is to trust your instincts and not be afraid of meeting new people and trying something new!

EN SIDA TILL EN ANNAN I bagaget har den utexaminerade grafisk design-studenten Sandra Liljegren frilansjobb för bland annat FATTA, Femjur och Supersnippan. Hon tog examen från Malmö högskola våren 2017 och har insett vikten vid att leva i semester-mode även i vardagen. Genom sitt engagemang i organisationen FATTA landade hon en praktikplats på Rethink, en kommunikationsbyrå placerad i Köpenhamn. Men nu är hon tillbaka i arbetslivet på rätt sida av bron, Malmö.

Hej Sandra, vem är du?

Jag är 23 år gammal. Kommer från Lund. Bor i Malmö med min kille som pluggat industridesign i Lund och som gör praktik på Orbital Systems just nu. Och vår katt Schmidt. Vi har bott i Malmö i ca tre år nu men jag kommer ihåg att rivaliteten mellan Lund och Malmö har alltid fått mig att känna en viss motvilja till Malmö. Men nu skulle jag aldrig flytta tillbaka till Lund. Det är som en spökstad i jämförelse med Malmö.

Hur är din självbild?

Som designer – otillräcklig, dålig och misslyckad. Jag tror det är vanliga känslor efter en examen, det blir tydligt att en har jobbat mot ett mål under tre år och plötsligt är det slut. Men när jag tittar tillbaka på vad jag gjort, exempelvis förra terminen när jag gjorde praktik så inser jag att jag kan ju det här. Det här funkar, jag sitter inte och låtsas.

När känner du dig som mest kreativ?

Precis innan deadline. Eller när jag har all tid i världen, men då är det att vara kreativ för mig själv. Inte för ett jobb. När jag har varit på semester i en månad, då kommer det tillbaka.

Vad är den största förändringen som skett i ditt liv, hittills?

Att börja på grafisk design. Jag har alltid slutat med allt jag börjat med när jag märker att jag inte är bäst, och är en ju aldrig från början. Design är det första som jag känner att jag inte är bäst på, men jag ska bli bäst.

Vad har varit ditt favoritprojekt i skolan?

Vi har haft väldigt mycket grupparbeten och det har varit skitkul. Vi hade ett som handlade om gerillamarknadsföring – där vi skulle komma på ett projekt och sen gå ut och göra det. Min grupp kom på ett projekt som kallades för ”bara mens”.

Men du, vad var det som lockade dig att börja på grafisk design på Mah? Jag läste en liten kurs i grafisk design på Lunds universitet som inte var så bra. Alls. Men jag insåg att detta gör jag på min fritid, det här har jag gjort sen jag var tio. Jag visste helt ärligt inte att grafisk design var en grej förrän jag såg den lilla utbildningen på Lunds universitet, och sen hitta jag Malmö högskolas utbildning sista dagen man skulle söka. Det känns inte som jobb, det är som att sitta och leka. Det är väl så det ska kännas.

Vi sprang omkring och satte på blodiga trosor på statyer i Malmö, gjorde klistermärken som såg ut som mensfläckar och satte på bussäten, cykelsadlar och gjorde ett instagram/ facebook konto. Vi målade min cykel röd och ritade på tamponger, menskoppar och bindor. Sen gick vi omkring med den i Malmö och delade ut tamponger till folk.

Vi kallade den mens-cykeln. Det var ett jättekul projekt!

Har du någonsin känt prestationsångest under din utbildning eller i arbetslivet idag?

JA! Det tänker jag att det kommer med the terrain. Du ska hela tiden ha koll på nästa grej som kommer och utvecklas, det är ett nätverk- och kontaktbaserat jobb. Du måste alltid vara på topp och göra reklam för dig själv. Du jämför dig till hundra procent med alla som går i din klass. Det blir också ganska lätt att det blir ett klimat där alla går efter den designen som anses vara bäst. Men det som alla tycker är snyggt är oftast det som inte pushar något. Du måste nästan vara lite konstig, då är du lite längre fram.

Hur var klimatet i klassen?

Det hade varit bättre om konkurrensen i klassen inte hade varit lika hög. I en skolmiljö så är det jättebra att be om feedback och höra lite med andra ”vad tycker du?”. I klassen har folk nog inspirerats lite för mycket av andras ideér ibland, jag tror inte någon vill erkänna det men det har ju varit så.

Men du måste lära dig att visa dina projekt för andra. Det du gör i skolan det behöver du inte ta på så stort allvar, det är då vi har chansen att flippa ut och göra det galna för det finns ingen budget, inga kunder och inga begränsningar.

Okej Sandra, vad kan Malmö Högskola göra bättre?

I vår utbildning hade vi inte någon utbildning i några program.

Vi hade typ en eftermiddag där vi fick lära oss indesign, illustrator och photoshop. Något mer tekniskt lärande skulle alltså vara bra. Malmö högskola borde också ha mer fokus på normkritik. Vi har haft människor från branschen som har kommit och bedömt i projekt. Och det är alltid spännande!

Sen är det synd att det nästan alltid är snubbar. De som bedömde projektet ”bara mens” till exempel var två manliga lärare och en snubbe från en reklambyrå. Och sen är det inte superbra genustänk i den här utbildningen alltid. Folk som det berättas om eller när det tas in folk från branschen så är det väldigt mycket män. Och det känns som något en velat ändra på. Ha mer fokus på normkritisk design eller norm överhuvudtaget. Det hade verkligen gjort det gött.

Har du några tips till nya och gamla studenter?

Genom utbildningen var det väldigt mycket learning by doing. Det kan jag se som både positivt och negativt, jag vill verkligen understryka att när jag började var jag dålig.

Pissdålig. Men jag har utvecklats som fan under de här tre åren. Så se till att vara den som utmanar dig själv, leta efter egna initiativ, starta projekt med klasskompisar, hoppa på i olika organisationer där du får en chans att testa på att jobba.

Jag var aktiv i FATTA, i Trans- och Tjejjouren, studentbyrån Byrån Mittemot. Jag hade inte kunnat göra det utan utbildningen, men när det gäller den praktiska erfarenheten så har det gett mig mest, absolut. De som inte riktigt har gjort något har haft en långsammare kurva.

MAKE SKURUP GREAT Interview with Alqumit Alhamad - Text & Photography by Lamia Karic

At first I walked straight past the house that has become 25 year old Alqumit Alhamad’s new home. It doesn’t stand out in any way, the brick walls even seem to have developed some kind of camouflage abilities and melted into the environment surrounding it. But I notice a strange sound in the distance that I didn’t hear at first, the rain had started pouring down just minutes earlier and muffled all the noise. Skurup had never before seemed so empty of life. As I came closer to the gate I passed an open window with music blasting out on the street, and a dark curly haired young man suddenly appeared in my view. He met my gaze and gestured for me to walk past the gate, into the garden and through the backdoor.

I felt like I was on a secret mission, meeting someone of high importance.

It turns out that the dark curly haired young man’s name is Alqumit Alhamad, an artist from Syria, who came to Sweden as an asylum seeker back in February 2016. In such short time he’s already managed to work both as an artist with exhibitions along with other local and foreign artists at galleries such as Frank Gallery in Malmö, Inkonst in Malmö during Nordisk Panorama film festival, to name a few. But you can also find him writing and speaking about issues relating to refugees and the LGBTQ community in a variety of press forums such as Skurupsposten, Gay Star News, Homotropolis and CNN, as well as being the spokesperson for newcomers at RFSL, Sweden’s leading LGBTQ organisation. He’s sure been busy this past year.

As a former graphic design student at Aleppo University of Fine Arts, Alqumit expresses himself in more than words. His clothes speaks of his ever changing identity, the tattoos on his left hand tell me about his creative mind finding another kind of canvas, as well as the septum piercing that got made as a result of the oppression the war brought to his former home town. But the journey to where he is today has been everything but easy.

He welcomes me at the doorstep with a grin on his face, and into the warmth of the house. As I walk inside I notice him quickly glancing at the mailbox as he shuts the door behind me. Later on he would go on and tell me about the stickers appearing on the mailbox from time to time with the slogan ‘Make Skurup Great Again’. Someone clearly doesn’t want him here, he tells me as he offers me a hot cup of tea. As I’m warming my hands on the cup I walk into his room. There’s art covering all four walls and the biggest furniture in the room, beside the bed, is his desk that’s covered with art supplies, sketches for possible new paintings and album covers. It’s an artist’s imprint, and a place he’s made his own in the house of Linnea and her son.

Even though Alqumit has always had a special relationship with art and using it as a medium for self-expression, it wasn’t an obvious choice to study at Aleppo University of Fine Arts.

Both his siblings choose professions with a clear and bright future, so for him to choose something as uncertain as art, well, let’s say he had to make a compromise with his parents.

‘Tell me a little about your life in Aleppo.’

‘Where to start..’ he says as he starts telling me about his university.

‘They [his parents] let me go to art school, but therefore they also had an impact on what subject I choose in the second year. It happened to be graphic design, one of the few subjects that most certainly would get me a job.’

Alqumit keeps his hands in his lap during our conversation, but makes a pause to show me the tattoos on his left hand. They are small and delicate, and worn down. Tattoos and piercings were common around art students in Aleppo and worked as a secret language to acknowledge each other and to express oneself. It was in Aleppo and the underground scene that the misfits found peace and solidarity. The underground scene, the rave parties, the gay clubs all gave the city a modern and ever changing feeling. It was the middle-east answer to Berlin. Aleppo was a sanctuary place, all until the explosions started. Alqumit continued talking about having to move from Aleppo to Latakia with his family because the situation got worse, all in the same breath as telling me about the secret gay clubs. The nonexistent change of tone surprised me, but didn’t shock me too much since this probably wasn’t the first time Alqumit had been talking about this period of his life.

Aleppo during this period of time, was hell. You couldn’t find any clean water, no electricity, the bus ride from Latakia that usually took 30 minutes now took 12 hours, but when I asked him why he continued going to university after taking a one year break during his move to Latakia, the reply came fast - to be able to apply for a scholarship, get a visa and get out of the country. The situation got worse, ISIS controlled even bigger parts of the country and people started acting out in response of the terror and death that now was hanging like a quilt over the city.

‘It started to get more crazy and cool in Damascus and Latakia, because people reached a point where they think that they’re going to die anyway so they don’t care about the consequences.’

One of these crazy happenings took place at a nightclub and beach called The Wadi Qandil in Latakia. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in Latakia and where most rave parties take place, but also where the conflicts all happened because of it’s close distance to the borders. Imagine partying on a beach with loud music, people dancing and explosions in the background - it must have felt like the most normal thing in an otherwise abnormal situation.

As the city changed so did Alqumit as well. He felt that he had to express himself, his feelings and thoughts about taboos to be able to cope with what’s happening in his home, and inside of him. He started expressing himself through his paintings, all who tells a unique and sometimes provocative story. The challenges that came out of living in such environments have enhanced his artistic vision, which can be noticed in details such as mythological symbols and creatures who feature his artwork. Moths, birds and butterflies all represent him changing into the man he is today, but they also stand for death, regeneration, energy and hope. He’s constantly enlightening topics and social themes as pedophilia, female genital mutilation and displacement to name a few in his work. This was also the basis for why his mom took the decision in december 2015 to pay someone to smuggle him out to Europe.

While getting ready to leave for Turkey, which was the first stop on the journey, he packed nothing but art stuff, record players and old paintings in his backpack. When I asked him how he ended up bringing art supplies instead of extra-clothes he shrugged and, with a crooked smile, told me that he brought only the stuff that was a part of his identity.

‘The funny thing is that the day after I went to Turkey, they announced that Syrians are being banned from entering the country. So my mom was like ‘See, so now you’re going to thank me for your life.’

But most importantly he thanks her for this second chance he got in life. To start over. But the journey from Turkey to Greece was the toughest and most challenging so far. To be able to get to Greece, he had to take a 45 minute boat journey across the Mediterranean sea. A journey in a small rubber boat together with another 50 people being smuggled. The journey took only 45 minutes, but according to Alqumit it felt like forever, especially when they were in the middle of the sea and the boat behind them sank, with all the people on it screaming while drowning.

‘When this happened I felt like I was on a boat in space, in a black hole, with no one around us, people freaking out and my mind going blank. The noise stopped and all I could hear was a beeping sound. I was numb to all the noise around me, I was just disconnected and started thinking about how I ended up going from being surrounded by friends at uni back home to standing here at this boat surrounded by 50 hyper-ventilating strangers.’

Then they came close enough to see the lighthouse at Greece mainland, that’s also when Alqumit started coming back to the present.

Starting to register the noise around him, the people, and the smells. The border police kept yelling to keep going, because they weren’t allowed to help out in the open sea. When they reached the beach people started to jump out of the boat out of happiness, started to kiss the ground out of relief, but all Alqumit could think of was not getting his clothes wet.

‘First thing I did when stepping on the mainland was to call my mom, my dad, and my boyfriend to let them know I had made it to Europe.

But I was so ignorant, that was only the beginning.’

The journey from there was rough. Getting into a new country could take days and it was the same process when arriving at the borders for each one of them. Since Alqumit didn’t bring more clothes than the ones he wore, the following months of travelling through foreign places were challenging. When continuing his journey through winter streets of Serbia, nightly walks across borders, through different UNHCR checkpoints placed along the way as help to reaching their final destination, he continually got sent back a few countries.

But this is when the real shit started. The checkpoints got stricter, every refugee was registered, their papers, money and belongings were collected. The countries made sure to let them know that if they came back there from another place, they would get deported somewhere else. It would be an endless circle of being passed along from country to country.

Rosenheim borders in Germany was one of the shit places on this journey. All the refugees arriving here were placed in a gym, being categorized by race and put in groups, they were interviewed and stripp searched down to their bare skin. It was a humiliating experience, according to Alqumit. Their belongings were put in a bag that they could collect when leaving the place. You’d think you ended up in an episode of Orange is the new black. When trying to escape the captivity and prison the war had brought to their homes, they found themselves in another kind of prison.

‘I told them [the germans] I was gay and seeking asylum because of my sexuality, and they put both male and female logos on my belongings. It was really freaking me out.’

When being asked what his final destination was, Alqumit was never afraid to tell people about his dream of reaching Sweden. Even when his friends tried to persuade him otherwise for his own safety, Alqumit kept telling them that it’s nothing like Syria. Reminding them that they actually are in Europe and that the least thing they could do was to be honest with the people whose country they were in. Being honest with why he was seeking asylum was also what got him deported back to Austria, while his friends could continue their journey through Germany freely.

Imagine doing this journey and keep getting sent back again and again, ending up in unknown places where you feel unwanted, not feeling safe and finally reaching a point where you want to just end it all. It takes a special kind of people to continue going after reaching this point, and this ability is what took Alqumit all the way to Skurup in Sweden.

So, how do we make Skurup great again? I think Alqumit did just that.

- You never wanted a regular-type life?

- What the fuck is that? ‘(1979 quote on his first time at the Oscars) I was at the Oscars once, for Serpico. That was the second time I was nominated. I was sitting in the third or fourth row with Diane Keaton. Jeff Bridges was there with his girl. No one expected me to come. I was a little high. Somebody had done something to my hair, blew it or something, and I looked like I had a bird’s nest on my head, a real mess. I sat there and tried to look indifferent because I was so nervous. Any time I’m nervous, I try to put on an indifferent or a cold look. At one point, I turned to Jeff Bridges and said, “Hey, looks like there won’t be time to get to the Best Actor awards.” He gave me a strange look. He said, “Oh, really?” I said, “It’s over, the hour is up.” He said, “It’s three hours long.” I thought it was an hour TV show, can you imagine that?

And I had to pee-bad. So I popped a Valium. Actually, I was eating Valium like they were candy. Chewed on them.

Finally came the Best Actor. Can you imagine the shape I was in? I couldn’t have made it to the stage. I was praying, “Please don’t let it be me. Please.” And I hear . . . “Jack Lemmon.” I was just so happy I didn’t have to get up, because I never would have made it.’

LOVE WHAT SURVIVES // MOUNT KIMBIE

Den 13 september öppnade biosalonger i Sverige upp dörrarna för alla clownfans där ute. Och vad passar bättre än en regnig och ruskig kväll som denna? I skrivande stund har jag promenerat hem från biografen i blåsten och förväntade mig nästan att se röda ballonger runt varje hörn.

Den brittiska duon Mount Kimbies musik har beskrivits som post-dubstep efter deras platta Crooks and lovers, men den här gången sträckers sig deras musik över genre-gränserna.

Det är ett elektroniskt mästerverk med inslag av bland annat jazz, indie, ambient och punk.

Många nyinspelningar av klassiker har en risk att falla platt, genom att inte riktigt leva upp till originalet. Men enligt mig har den nya DET fångat samma essens och känsla som man annars kanske bara hittar i filmer från sent 80-tal eller tidigt 90-tal. Mina tankar kan inte låta bli att vandra till den näst intill kult-klassade filmen “Stand by me” från -86, som även den är skriven av Stephen King. Stand by me och DET har gemensamt innehåll i form av ett ungdomsgäng vars gemensamma nämnare är att de anses lite nördiga och inte sällan faller offer för mobbare. De sammansvetsas i kampen mot dessa mobbare och kanske även samhället i övrigt, då de i andras ögon ses som lite udda. Detta genererar dock i en stark frihetskänsla. DET är inte bara en skräckfilm, det är en berättelse om friheten att kunna vara sig själv och en berättelse om sann vänskap.

Tillsammans med Andrea Balency tar de ett steg ifrån plattans tidigare elektroniska postrock med You look certain (I’m not so sure) som kan liknas till punken, vilken i sin tur följs upp av Poison med sitt dramatiska piano. Minst sagt en salig blandning.

Men för att tala mer i termer av skräckfilm, är DET heller inte då någon besvikelse. Om man är en skräckfilmsfantast (som mig) kan man inget annat än att känna den där lite pirrande lyckokänslan när redan i öppningsscenen, en liten pojke som leker med sin pappersbåt i regnet, får sin arm avbiten och gatan fylls röd av blod. Ta den där 90-tals känslan och addera bättre specialeffekter, så har du DET. Det är såklart individuellt, men min åsikt är att det grafiska och den filmiska historien är DETs starkaste kvalitéer. Det finns många skräckfilmer där ute som är betydligt mer skrämmande.

Så vad säger ni? Jag ser i alla fall fram emot kapitel 2.

Mount Kimbie introducerar plattan med den mästerliga stereo-mixen Four Years and One Day som kanske är det som kopplar dem mest till deras tidigare musik. Det instängda ljudet får oss även att associera musiken till postrock-legenderna Fuck Buttons, och mot slutet av låten kliver de in i disorienterad diskant.

I We go home together hör vi en helt annan James Blake än den vi är van vid. Plattan avslutas med vad som känns som en klassisk James Blake över två jazzriff som turas om, det är oklart men ändå så perfekt.

För det tränade örat är detta en riktig stereofest.

BERÄTTELSE OM ETT ÄKTENSKAP // GEIR GULLIKSEN Kan en kärleksförklaring samtidigt vara ett avskedsbrev?

Gulliksen berättar en historia vi hört så många gånger förr, en historia om en relation som tar slut. Men han berättar den som om det var något helt nytt, och så kanske fallet är. Det är alltid nytt när det händer en själv, man är oförstående för att någon annan någonsin förr skulle ha upplevt samma sak.

‘Vårt äktenskap liknade inte något annat äktenskap, hade hon tänkt, men nu förstår hon inte vad hon menade med det.’

De har det bra, ett fint och ordningsamt hem, etablerade karriärer inom sina yrken, knullar bra även tjugo år in i relationen. De känner sig så trygga i deras relation, så pass trygga att de har råd att testa den. Romanen är ett terapibesök där vi går in i huvudpersonens tankegångar, vi får nysta upp händelseförloppet och se hur kärleken tar en ny form och förflyttar sig utan vi kan förhindra det. Det handlar om en man vars fru förälskar sig i en annan man, men som väljer att uppmuntra henne till att utforska detta, att vila i förälskelsen ett tag för att sedan förstärka deras relation. Men det tar slut, som relationer alltid gör. De byter form, förflyttar sig eller upplöses. Detta är en reflektion av hur något unikt visar sig vara precis lika dant som allt annat. Detta är en roman man sveper i ett andetag.

Efter en lång skoldag kan ibland en öl jämföras med ljuset i tunneln, det friskar upp och ger en nytt hopp för livet. Personligen köper jag hellre billig öl än god öl, oftast blir det Tuborg. För att vidga mina vyer bestämde jag mig för att testa lite lokalproducerad öl.

Så jag gick till systemet vid Triangeln, plockade på mig sex olika öl där det enda jag kollade efter var om de var bryggda i Skåne eller inte. Därefter bjöd jag över Ellen, en ölglad tjej som alltid är på

att testa något nytt. Jag fick henne att bjuda mig på pizza med överenskommelsen att jag bjöd på, förhoppningsvis god, öl. Varav hon fick kommentera det första hon tänkte på, för varje ny öl vi smakade.

Om du eller någon du känner är skaparen av någon av dessa utvalda ölsorter, hata oss inte.

Vi är inga specialister på öl och många kanske skulle påstå att vi saknar smaklökar. Det skulle kunna argumenteras att vi helt enkelt inte är tillräckligt mycket finsmakare för att förstå storheten i dessa smaker.

REDUCE AND REUSE How we can change to more sustainable lifestyles with less waste?

Hollywood, California: “It’s so clean out here.“ says Annie Hall. Alvy Singer replies “That’s because they don’t throw their garbage away, they turn it into television shows.“ What is meant as a rather joking comment in this dialogue in Woodie Allen’s popular 1977 movie “Annie Hall“, has a more serious side as well, when related to our current environmental issues caused by human produced waste all over the world.

The rather common practice of recycling, obviously both in the movie industry and the waste disposal infrastructure, can’t be the gold standard.

Waste is an ubiquitous phenomenon. Yet, few people actually consider it an issue. Thanks to the magnificent urban waste collection infrastructure in Western countries, garbage miraculously “disappears“. Out of sight out of mind. Sweden recycles 99 percent of all household garbage and burned 2.3 million tonnes of it for energy generation in incineration plants. The country even imported 1.3 million tonnes from countries such as Norway, Ireland and the UK. While this might be a less destructive way to tackle waste problems (such as land fill disposal), incineration can hardly be the destination.

Let’s have a peak back into the past, when resources were often very scarce, not available and therefore expensive.

Local supply chains did not require packaging the way we package today. Shopping was a whole different experience in many regards. When post-war progress brought higher incomes and lower costs, industry and retail offered solutions that make the every-day life more convenient. We take advantage of a system that helps to maintain our sometimes hectic and busy lifestyles where going shopping is either stress compensation or a necessary burden that we must bear every other day. Did we land in a self-perpetual cycle that produces tonnes of trash for our own convenience? But, there is an alternative in sight. What if we just try to not produce garbage at all?

Rowan Drury, founder of GRAM, the first (and so far only) Malmö-based zero-waste store in Sweden, about the normalization of plastic garbage: “Taking a plastic bag is a normal thing, taking a coffee cup that you throw away after two minutes is a normal thing. Coming with reusable cup is a weird behavior, coming with a cloth bag to supermarket is strange.“ Her mission is to turn this upside down.

Without doubt, simplification requires some work at first.

Changing habits, so Rowan, can be hard and challenging.

It is “a whole new way of shopping. It requires planning“.

But taking small, consecutive and creative steps in the right direction is a good approach to a less waste-intense life.

Bringing a reusable coffee cup and a water bottle could be a start. Preparing your lunch box with delicious food from home or even using the box for take-out dishes is also easy to adopt. When doing the groceries, cloth bags are a helpful aid and can be quite fashionable at the same time.

With the establishment of her store GRAM in Malmö, Rowan now offers more people in Malmö the opportunity to shop, using their own containers. After her move from a stand at Saluhallen to a store facility at S:t Knuts torg, an upcoming neighborhood and residential area in Malmö’s South-East, Rowan gets in contact with locals, who seemed to be open for this kind of consumption and just waited for the opening of a store of that kind.

However, GRAM is still an exception and while this example of progress raises much awareness and creates discussion, normalization is key to success. Schools and the Swedish television already discovered the need to educate children about the implications of plastics in the world, but there is still a lot more to do. As Rowan describes, people do care about the environment, but often don’t relate their actions to the consequences. What is it then, that can contribute to the needed shift on a broader scale I ask Rowan, how she imagines the future of zero-waste “I would really like to see it at in a supermarket as an option. Individual stores can

still work, but it has the factor of exceptional“. However, she doesn›t think, that turning a whole supermarket like ICA and Coop into being package-free would be feasible. Yet, retailers could provide a package free isle, such as commonly found in the United States. So far, many supermarkets in Sweden are not prepared for people bringing their own container, even though it would be fairly easy to make adjustments. By doing so, lots of stores could make themselves more available to people who avoid the plastic bag.

Until this hopefully not so far future, there is no lack of inspiration and useful tips out there on the web. The most renowned on YouTube is Lauren Singer with her channel “Trash is for Tossers”, where she reaches almost 125.000 subscribers. Her garbage of two years, everything that she can’t reduce, reuse, recycle or compost, fits in a single jar.

“She is this cool young girl and if she can do it, I can - and we all can - make steps towards this.“ says Rowan. Even though Lauren is a somewhat extreme case, many people can actually adopt one or the other life hacks without too much of a trouble.

A couple of tips for Malmö University students:

Coffee, tea and water: Let’s be honest: a day without a hot (and stimulating) drink is not a proper day. Don’t forget to bring your reusable glass or stainless steel bottles and mugs.

Just ask at the café whether the kind person behind the counter can fill the hot drink in yours instead of a paper cup. And filter coffee is self-service anyways. For the refreshment: Sweden has perfectly safe and tasty tab water and Orkanen Library provides a fountain next to the café in the 5th floor.

Lunch: Got some left-overs from the dinner yesterday or up for a tasty sandwich? Take a reusable box and stack in your most favourite yums and knick-knacks. It saves money, garbage and can even end up in a lunch box competition on who has the most creative dish.

Malmö University has several locations with microwaves where you can heat it up. Obs! Just make sure to use microwave-safe boxes.

If the stack of left-over glasses (e.g. from jam, pickled red beets, etc.) reaches the ceiling, you can bring some to Rowan for others to take for free. Maybe you also find an ingredient there to accompany your dinner.

HEJ ALLA MALMÖSTUDENTER! Hoppas sommaren har varit er till lags och att ni börjar era studier med en härlig känsla i magen. Själv har jag haft en väldigt spännande semester där jag bland annat fått chansen att vara studentrepresentant för Malmö högskola under en konferens i Minneapolis. Att åka till USA var en spännande upplevelse för mig som aldrig varit där. Det stämmer verkligen att allting är större i Amerika, inte minst universitetsområdet där kårhuset snarare påminde om ett rådhus i utseendet. Sättet studentkåren i Minneapolis bereder frågor kring studentengagemang skiljer sig också en hel del från hur kåren arbetar i Malmö. I Minneapolis är det framförallt aktiviteterna utanför studierna som är det centrala där det fanns mellan 600 till 1000 studentgrupper och föreningar med olika teman. Bland annat fanns det studentgrupper som höll på med mindfulness och rugby. Men samtidigt gick det upp för mig att Kårens påverkansarbete gentemot universitet i Minneapolis inte var särskilt inflytelserik. Studenter fanns ej representerade i beslutande organ inom de olika fakulteterna och Kåren fanns inte heller som stöd vid studentärenden.

Därför är jag väldigt stolt över hur studentinflytandet fungerar här i Malmö. Studentkåren representerar er studenter i nästintill alla beslutande organ på högskolan, såväl på de olika fakulteterna som på central nivå. På så sätt har vi studenter rätt att komma till tals när viktiga beslut tas om våra lärandemiljöer, aktiviteter, utbildningsplaner, kurslitteratur och också frågor gällande studenters bostadssituation. Vi har fått en fantastisk möjlighet att förändra och faktiskt förbättra våra utbildningar, och samtidigt hjälpa högskolan att skapa mer kvalitativa program och kurser för nya studenter.

Men ett studentengagemang skapas inte utan intresserade studenter. Alla vi som arbetar inom studentkåren gör det antingen ideellt eller har tagit studieuppehåll för att arbeta i styrelsen. Det är mycket som ska göras och det är inte alltid tiden räcker till.

Och det beror många gånger på att vi saknar frivilliga som vill eller kan vara med och bidra med sina fina idéer och projekt.

Följden blir då många gånger att framförallt studenternas röster aldrig kommer till tals.

När jag började engagera mig inom Studentkåren Malmö var det inte alldeles lätt att förstå sig på allt som sades och gjordes där.

Särskilt i början var man nervös och tänkte “vad ska jag kunna bidra med?”. Men jag möttes dock av stort stöd från andra som var engagerade och lärde mig att min röst är viktig och hur jag kan använda den för att förändra. Detta hjälpte ifall mig att inse vad coolt det är att känna att man har ett inflytande. Vi som studenter har makten att påverka i vilken riktning vår högskola och kommande universitet ska gå. Vi som studenter har på så sätt makten att formar våra yrkesområden, men också vårt framtida samhälle.

Men vi har inte bara makten att påverka, vi har också ansvaret att påverka, och engagera oss.

Se till att organisera dig, ställ krav på din utbildning, och dina medstudenter. Det fina är att du kan göra det tillsammans med oss i Studentkåren. För vi är stora när du känner dig liten!

I Ioana studied for two of the years without ever knowing what Maria Amisat my programme Kinga Joel the Union does, why it's important to be a member within it and what I as a student can do to help out other students Pavel Agaba Kowalczyk Nilsson around the university. In hindsight, I realised I missed out on a lot of opportunities for having fun and growing as an individual, and I want to make sure that that happens to as few people as possible. I want to help students find the place they feel they can grow and make a different, regardless if it's within the Student Union or not. And in the meanwhile make sure that everyone gets the support they need to be able to go through their studies without trouble.

I hope they know more than I did during my studies. If not, here's a crash course: endless amounts of fun in our pub and our associations, an opportunity to learn how the university and formal meetings work, a lot of conferences and fancy events to join, tons of free stuff and discounts, amazing soup every Wednesday and last but not least - free coffee. And tea. And cookies. I could write stuff all day but it only takes a few minutes to join the Student Union, what are you waiting for?

MUSIC PUB - PREMIÄR 28/4!

Kåren serverar Studentfrukost en gång/månad, varje tisdag innan CSN betalas ut! För endast 20 kr får du som är medlem ta del av en frukostbuffé med klassiskt innehåll så som mackor, pålägg, yoghurt, müsli, ägg, juice och självklart ryckande färskt kaffe! Frukosten serveras mellan kl. 9-11, men kom i tid för att vara säker på att bli mätt!

Tillsammans med Festmesteriet startar vi nu Music Pub på Studentpuben. Välkommen till en härlig pubkväll med livemusik! Alla är välkomna! Är man inte student kommer man in genom att skriva upp sig på en lista i dörren. Leg. krävs, åldersgräns 18år.
