Mahurangi is the shortened version of the Maori phrase ‘Mahu hu ki te rangi’, which translates to ‘the rock that points to the sky’. It has been suggested that the name comes from the tribe Ngatirongo, which originally inhabited the land between Auckland and Whangarei. The Mahurangi district once stretched from Auckland’s North Shore to Te Arai.

Kia ora welcome It’s that time of year again when Kiwis pack up and head for the beach, the bach or the bush, looking for some welcome respite from the weekly grind. If this is your first visit to the Mahurangi area, we wish you a warm welcome. We hope you have the time to relax and discover all that our beautiful region has to offer. The list of recreational choices is as long as it is varied. For the outdoor enthusiast, there are long, empty stretches of sandy beaches, pounding surf breaks, rugged cliffs and headlands, native bush, quiet rivers, dune lakes, wetlands and walking tracks to explore. Others might prefer to visit wineries and cafes, galleries and sculpture parks, museums or indulge in a little retail therapy at markets and village shops. Whatever your preference, we hope you enjoy your stay and return home with happy memories.

The narrow neck of land that stretches from Puhoi north to the Brynderwyns, flanked by Kaipara Harbour on its west and the Hauraki Gulf on its east, has much to recommend it. The west coast, along SH16, is treasured for its wild beaches and remote farming vistas. The east coast, with its surf, white sandy beaches and safe boating opportunities, is more densely settled. And scattered between the coasts are numerous towns and villages with quaint customs and some even quainter locals. Don’t say you weren’t warned

Puhoi Bohemian settlement Puhoi will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its Bohemian settlement this year and a range of events is being organised to commemorate the milestone. There were 83 settlers in the first wave of Bohemian immigrants who reached NZ on June 29, 1863, after more than 100 days at sea. A community dinner, dances, church services, tours of the village, family reunions, a pioneer landing re-enactment and the official opening of the Puhoi River historic wharf replica are all on the anniversary programme, which will culminate on the weekend of June 28 to 30. Since the centenary in 1963, Puhoi has seen a population reversal from a community almost exclusively Bohemian-descended to one where around threequarters of the residents are a mix of ethnicities. While events will honour the early settlers and the journey they made, the anniversary will also celebrate the many new residents who have enriched the Puhoi community over recent decades. Info: www.puhoi150years.org.nz The original Puhoi settlers were all of the Roman Catholic faith and one of the first things they turned their attention to was constructing a church. This was completed in 1881 and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul whose feast day in the Catholic calendar falls on 29 June, the date of the arrival of the first settlers. The church still stands today and has been the focus of community fundraising to restore it in time for the reunion. A major part of the renovation centred on the church’s 22 stained glass windows, which have been re-leaded, cleaned and re-installed in new frames.

Warkworth For more than 150 years, Warkworth has been the Mahurangi district’s main centre of commerce and trade. Still largely reflecting its original orderly town layout, it has witnessed the ebb and flow of various rural industries, from fruit growing to forestry and dairying. A major industry was the Wilson Cement Works, just east of the town on the river, which operated from 1865 until its closure around 1928. Now owned by Auckland Council, a management and restoration plan for the site is in place. The Town Hall in the centre of town turned 100 in 2011. Although closed at present, Council has plans to restore the building which has an Historic Places Category 1 rating, mainly because of its unusual stoneware block construction.

There are rewards for visitors who set out on foot. Whether you’re looking for a coastal view or a native bush experience, or both, there are many choices. Pamphlets are available from local information offices, listing the most popular walks. Many fall along the national walkway, Te Araroa (see www.teararoa.org.nz for further details) which enters the region at Waipu, traversing the Brynderwyns to Mangawhai, Mt Tamahunga, The Dome, Moirs Hill and exiting at Puhoi/Wenderholm. Some of these tracks have been developed with the support of local landowners so it’s important that walkers respect the environment. Here’s some tips: Keep to the track Leave gates as you find them/use the stiles provided Always take litter with you Always bury toilet waste; avoid toileting near water Park your car thoughtfully (never drive onto private properties or park in front of gates) Dogs are prohibited on farms and in protected bird areas.

Art & Craft creativity unleashed Arts and crafts are integral to the fabric of the north Rodney region with galleries overlapping with fine dining in cafes, restaurants and bars, sculpture parks matched with wine, and historic and cultural artefacts adorning parks and buildings. The metal art animals at Wellsford, the public toilets at Matakana and the creatively adorned ceilings of the Matakana Cinemas point to the drive for beauty and originality. To combine a scenic stroll in stunning natural settings with art appreciation and the chance to take home things you love, consider the likes of Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens or the Brick Bay Wines and Sculpture Trail at Snells Beach. Take time to admire the skill and beauty in carved pou whenua placed strategically on the land at various sites throughout the district where they acknowledge and represent the relationship between tangata whenua (the people of the land), their ancestors and their environment or tarangawaewae (place of standing).
Remember:
Information sites will be able to offer details of galleries, public art and artist studios. Ask for current Art Trail brochures.
Artist studios may keep irregular hours. If you want to be sure of access phone ahead.
Artworks can often be packaged and posted to save having to cart them around.

Warkworth all aboard A new public transport service will be up and running in the Warkworth area this summer. The pilot on-demand bus service is the first of its kind in NZ and if successful, other regional centres could soon follow suit. The scheduled hourly service will run between Snells Beach and Warkworth, and Matakana and Warkworth, with additional services during peak times. Time has also been built into the timetable to do prebooked pick-ups from the wider catchment including Omaha, Leigh, Point Wells, Algies Bay and Sandspit. A ticket costs between $3 and $4, with slightly higher fares from outlying villages. The timetable is available at www.kowhai.org.nz or from the Warkworth i-SITE and local libraries.

Hauturu The brooding presence of Hauturu-o-Toi (Little Barrier Island) nominates the vista as you enter Leigh. Situated 22 kilometres off Cape Rodney, its name means resting place of the winds. Mt Hauturu, at 722-metres, is the highest mountain in the region. The island is NZ’s oldest nature reserve, having been set-up in 1895, and is the only forested area in NZ relatively undisturbed by introduced browsing mammals, reinforcing its importance both nationally and internationally. Hauturu is home to more than 400 native plant species including many that are now seldom seen on the mainland. The island’s fauna has slowly started to re-establish since the removal of feral cats concluded in 1980 and kiore (rats) in 2004. Threatened species living on the island include wetapunga (giant weta) and hihi (stitchbird) for which the island has been the last refuge for more than 100 years. The island is off-limits to the general public and landing on the island is strictly forbidden.

Te Hana not to be missed One place not miss on the drive north from Warkworth, on State Highway 1, is the modest gallery and workshop in Te Hana run by master carver Kerry Strongman. The Arts Factory boasts an impressive international clientele from Miami to Florence including the Sheraton Hotel in Brussels. Renowned for his Jewellery for Giants sculptures, carved in swamp kauri and other native timbers, Kerry’s work has evolved toward a more contemporary approach using modern methods and equipment, while retaining its traditional roots. Although his work resonates with his Maori (Ngapuhi), Scottish and Irish ancestry, he says the form the artwork takes and the stories they tell are recognised the world over. “Good form communicates without language. No-one owns it, we just get to express it.” The ancient swamp kauri, which is between 25,000 to 40,000 years old, also contributes to the effect his sculptures often have on people. The raw material can take between five to seven years to travel from salvage to sale.

Matakana the village While the Saturday Farmers Market is undeniably one of Matakana’s biggest drawcards for weekend visitors, there is a lot more to see and do in the village if you have the time. The three cinemas are well worth a visit for their décor alone and the toilet block across the road is not something you will see every day. Nearby you’ll find the internationallyrecognised Morris & James Pottery and Tile Works, and the Matakana Country Park, Omaha Beach and Whangateau Harbour are just a few minutes drive away. There are numerous galleries, cafes and vineyards spread throughout the district, providing a welcome respite for the hungry and thirsty traveller. Many of the vineyards have cellar doors and offer wine tasting.

We’ve got a new look With new oobilicious products for you to indulge yourself in.
If you like to shop the slow way, then the Mahurangi won’t be a disappointment. Its country markets abound with fresh produce, mostly locally grown, and all sorts of fascinating trinkets can be found on the makeshift trestle tables, ranging from craft and clothing to jewellery, handmade hats and bags, and homemade soaps. Whether they are held inside or out, markets are fun. Many have entertainers and tastings to add to the convivial atmosphere, and even if you’re not buying, they are a great place to sip on an organic coffee and watch the world go by. Serious foodies can savour delicious deep fried quail eggs, fresh waffles, handmade sausages, smoked salmon, upmarket olive oils, chocolates, buffalo cheeses and macadamia nuts, washed down with feijoa wine or one of a number of boutique beers. Homemade cakes and sweets, breads, jams, pickles, sauces, cider and cheese guarantee that few visitors go home empty handed.

Matakana on your bike One of the most exciting projects on the go in Matakana is the six-kilometre pathway/cycleway linking the village to Omaha and Point Wells. The Matakana Community Group recently took delivery of a 70-metre section of the footbridge which once spanned the motorway near Remuera, in Auckland. The bridge will solve, at an affordable cost, the problem of how to get walkers and cyclists across the river. The group is keen to see the project completed and hopes to have the bridge in place sometime around March/April 2013. The pathway runs across both private and public land, affording spectacular views of Omaha Bay where, if you’re lucky, you may even see orca or dolphins. Volunteers have built the pathway, with strong support from local contractors.

Tawharanui
farm fresh produce and other goodies
The 588-hectare Tawharanui Regional Park, on Takatu Road, is New Zealand’s first integrated open sanctuary (mainland island) where farming, public recreation and conservation of native species combine. Thanks to a 2.5km predator proof fence and extensive plantings, native threatened or endangered species such as the brown kiwi, bellbird, pateke, green gecko and, most recently, saddleback are being safely reintroduced. Every year, volunteers plant two hectares of native vegetation with nearly 20,000 plants raised in the park nursery. There are several walking trails and two mountain bike tracks, each varying in distance. Don’t forget to pack a set of binoculars to catch a glimpse of the native birds.

Omaha bird refuge Birds nesting on the end of Omaha spit stand a better chance of success these days, thanks to the efforts of the Omaha Shorebird Protection Society. The society recently completed the construction of a 400-metre predator proof fence, which runs from the mean high tide mark on Whangateau Harbour across the spit to the first groin. The purpose of the fence is to keep native shorebirds, including the threatened New Zealand dotterel and the variable oystercatcher, safe from pests such as rats, stoats, weasels and hedgehogs. Double gates have been erected, allowing continued easy pedestrian access along the beach. Visitors are asked to steer clear of the nesting areas, which are clearly marked with signage.

Matakana sipped to perfection As a wine region with a growing reputation, Matakana has got more than its fair share of attractive options for everyone from the casual taster to the wine connoisseur. With grape varieties ranging from the mainstream chardonnay, merlot and pinot gris to the more exotic sangiovese, carmenere and viognier (v-on-yay) and everything in between, there’s good reason to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. Winery owners frequently offer hospitality and tastings at the cellar door where you’ll encounter a warm welcome and an opportunity to sample various vintages. Drink in the value-added experience of talking to people who know their product, having the chance to try before you buy, getting advice on cellaring and more. Goat Island marine treasure Every year, more than 100,000 visitors come to Cape Rodney-Okakari Pt Marine Reserve, more commonly known as Goat Island, to marvel at this marine wonderland. Established in 1975, the 518-hectare reserve is a living aquarium made up of rocky intertidal platform reefs, kelp forests, urchin barrens, sponge gardens, sub-tidal sand flats and warm temperate reef fish. While visitors can get a sense of the reserve from the rocks, you have to get wet to really appreciate what you are looking at. With just a snorkel, fins and mask you can become a spectator on a fascinating world filled with giant snapper, crayfish, crabs and other sea life. The best time to visit is when there is less than a one metre swell and little or no wind. Visibility underwater is also best during late summer when the water is also warmest.
Reserve rules No fishing within the marine reserve boundary, no feeding the fish as it changes their natural behaviour, no dogs and no taking of any part of the marine environment. Contravening marine reserve rules can incur a hefty fine and confiscation of dive gear and boats.
Scandrett regional park Visitors to the Mahurangi East Peninsula should be sure to visit Scandrett Regional Park, on the southeastern side of Kawau Bay, about three kilometres past Algies Bay. The park is named after the Scandrett family who farmed on the land for more than 130 years and affords views of Kawau and the Hauraki Gulf. On site is a collection of farm buildings, as well as the original Scandrett Homestead built in 1884. Fishing is popular from the rock shelf below Mullet Point. Access is on foot along the beach and cliff base, and can be accessed at most times other than an hour either side of high tide. Sandspit is the stepping off point for Kawau Island and Mansion House, the stately home of Governor George Grey, which is currently receiving some much-needed maintenance.

History Don’t be in a hurry when you visit one of our local museums as each one tells a different chapter in our regional history. As the name suggests, The Kauri Museum, at Matakohe, focuses on the mighty kauri forests which once covered large tracts of the north. The museum holds the largest collection of kauri gum in the world and exhibits include a full-scale boarding house. The Waipu Museum follows the dramatic story of one of the most remarkable migrations in our national history and a famous Scottish migration saga. The Albertland Museum, in Wellsford, houses extensive records and memorabilia relating to the Albertland settlers from the 1860s, while Warkworth & District Museum pays a lot of attention to the domestic lives of early settlers. The Bohemian Museum, at Puhoi, has the genealogical records of early Puhoi immigrants and gives visitors and appreciation of the area’s development. Volunteers play an integral part in maintaining and showing local museum collections, and are always happy to assist where they can.

time & tide The gold fever that gripped many places in New Zealand in the late 1860s also affected the Mahurangi district. It was thought the formation of the land was indicative of gold and that the local ranges could be a continuation of Cape Colville seam. Surveyors laying out new roads found quartz at Puhoi and samples were also taken from Matakana. Prospecting took place at Kourawhero alongside what appeared to be a reef and a shaft was sunk more than 40 feet. A meeting was held to invite subscriptions to aid the prospectors but early optimism faded and the venture was abandoned. Times were hard and many were lured away from their land to the Thames goldfields.

Decades of planning and fundraising by the Mangawhai Historical Society will come to fruition possibly in late 2013 when Mangawhai hopes to open its new museum. Located on the corner of Molesworth Drive and Thelma Street, at the northern end of the causeway, which links Mangawhai Village with Mangawhai Heads, the theme of the new museum is the Mangawhai Harbour. With significant input and encouragement from Te Papa and Destination Northland, and drawing on early settler and Maori material, it will tell the natural history, conservation and holiday stories of Mangawhai. There will also be a dedicated area providing access to family histories and genealogy. A feature of the building is its stingray-inspired roof.

Waipu Waipu’s Grand Pageant was first held in 2003 to mark the 150th anniversary of the township’s founding in 1853. The outdoor spectacle was so successful the community decided to repeat the event 10 years later – in 2013. The pageant celebrates the extraordinary story of Scottish highlanders who, forced out of their homes during the ‘Clearances’ of the early 19th century, sailed to Nova Scotia, and later New Zealand, in search of a better life. The southern exodus was led by the aging Reverent Norman McLeod. Two outdoor evening performances will be staged on The Glebe, by the Waihoihoi River, near where the first landings took place, on January 11 and 12. The natural amphitheatre venue has capacity for up to about 4000 people.
