Experience and youth vie for Rodney votes The race to win Rodney in this month’s general election has six parties jockeying for positions on the starting line. The candidates are Colin Craig for the Conservatives, Beth Houlbrook for Act, Tracey Martin for NZ First, Mark Mitchell for National, Teresa Moore for the Greens, and Christine Rose for Labour. Mrs Martin is the only candidate to have faced the electorate in a national election before. She stood for NZ First in 2008 securing 1599 (or 4.26 percent) of the votes. The departure of Lockwood Smith, now number three on the National Party list, has thrown the field open, although history would give National the advantage.

One of these six candidates will be Rodney’s next representative in Parliament.

Medal age lowered

Ex-Service personnel aged 50 and over can now apply for the NZ Defence Service Medal (NZDSM). Until recently, only ex-service personnel aged 60 or over were eligible. Since April, when the first applications were called for, more than 13,000 medals have been issued. Due to the large number of people eligible for the NZDSM, the call for applications is being managed in four stages, with priority being given to processing applications from older living ex-Service personnel first. Christmas appeal launched While festive and fun for some families, the appearance of Christmas decorations can be an added pressure for those already struggling on a tight budget. The Homebuilders Warkworth and Mahurangi Matters Christmas Community Appeal is underway providing a dignified way for the public to help out with gifts for people in their own communities, who are often “doing it tough” through no fault of their own. Family support worker Angela Crabb says Homebuilders works with about 200 families a year and no stereotype can be applied. “The reasons that families get into difficulties are many and varied,” she says. “Sometimes a single power bill, illness or car repair can put throw a two income family into total disarray.” “Christmas is inevitably stressful as they strive to do something special for their family with minimal resources and face added demands to keep children entertained and happy during school holidays.” The community can help by delivering new and second-hand items in good order to the

Christmas tree in the Mahurangi Matters’ office, at 17 Neville Street, Warkworth during business hours. Ideal gifts include things a family can enjoy together, such as board games, sports equipment, other outdoor games, beach gear, and beach towels. Books for all ages, craft kits and activities and non-perishable food items, including festive treats are also well received. However, toys reliant on batteries are best avoided as they can be expensive to keep running and there is already a surfeit of donated soft toys. Angela says small gifts for parents are also gratefully received, as those on a tight budget commonly treat their children and miss out themselves. Gifts should be delivered unwrapped and will be collected by Homebuilders on a regular basis so that Homebuilders support workers can select and wrap items most suited for each family. “I know that families on the receiving end really appreciate it because it’s a way of giving that doesn’t hurt anyone’s pride.”

Campaign stepped up The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association is proceeding with its campaign to urge residents to withhold rate payments to Kaipara District Council. About 170 people attended the meeting, held on October 23, to discuss concerns about Council’s handling of the EcoCare wastewater scheme. The association has initiated a letter-writing campaign to the Ombudsman, the Auditor General and the Minister for Local Government seeking an independent review of the EcoCare wastewater scheme. Residents are also being asked to forward a fourth letter to Council advising them that any rate payments will be withheld until the community is notified of progress in demands for an independent review.

Decision deferred

Further investigation on Sanderson bore Watercare is undertaking additional technical work to assess the impacts of its application to take the bulk of water from the Sanderson Road bore, delaying an Auckland Council hearing on the issue until 2012. A Watercare spokesperson says that while While the assessment has included an of 1.4 million m3/year, to secure the company has a good understanding investigation of surface water flows water supply for future residential of the likely affect of the proposal on throughout the catchment, the area of growth in Warkworth. other bores, the work will provide more influence of the drawdown is considered After speaking with submitters information on the interaction of the to be much smaller, generally being Watercare proposed to stagger the aquifer with the surface water in the those streams closest to the bore. water uptake from 750,000m3 Mahurangi catchment. The Te Arai Beach Preservation Society is celebrating a decision by Auckland Council to defer any decision on Te Arai before plan change hearings have been held. In an email to supporters, society chair Mark Walker said if Council had decided to agree to a ‘land for titles’ swap with the developer, in return for the ability to subdivide, it would have made the whole plan change hearings and the public consultation process a sham. Council dealt with the matter in the confidential section of its meeting under the heading Te Arai – future options.

Gas leak impacts The gas leak in the Maui pipeline, located to the north of New Plymouth, disrupted commercial and residential gas users in Warkworth late last month. While a spokesman from Genesis Energy could not confirm how many people were affected, Chocolate Brown Chocolaterie and Café in Hill Street was one of the businesses whose supplies were cut. Owner Steve McClean says they had to bring in a barbecue and offered a restricted menu.

OFF THE RECORD

Bluey green Pt 1

It’s nice to know political differences aren’t taken too seriously, at least not in Warkworth. A father who was manning the Greens stall at the recent Kowhai Festival seemed unperturbed by the fact that his toddler was clutching tight to a blue Conservative Party balloon.

FEEDBACK Watercare’s inadequacies Thank you Mahurangi Matters for highlighting the inadequacies in Watercare’s plans for North Rodney sewage (MM Oct 17). As a quick-fix solution to Matakana’s problem and to allow growth in their area, Rodney District Council pushed through, against local objections, the plan to pump Matakana sewage into the catchment of Whangateau Harbour. Now we see that the 2010 report states the Omaha treatment plant does not have the capacity, but Watercare says it does without any evidence of new research. No consideration has been given to the possible consequences for the Whangateau Harbour. Questions unanswered include: yy What will be the impact of high nutrient levels on the harbour and ground water? yy Why is there no testing of the discharge for the presence of modern chemicals and drugs which we know can have adverse environmental effects? yy What will be the impact on the saline harbour ecology of significant volumes of additional fresh water from another catchment? yy How will the system cope with severe storm events and sea level rise? We have only recently learned that the eucalyptus trees planted on the land where the treated effluent is discharged are unsuitable and unable to take up

the water, thus leaving it to drain into the groundwater (with bores used for drinking water!) and the harbour. Fine for Matakana but there are no plans to deal with the existing septic tank problems in the Whangateau catchment. The new Auckland Plan uses language, which should prevent this happening. We will see. Elizabeth Foster, Whangateau

Getting the facts straight If Warren Agnew feels he must criticise people doing voluntary work for their community, he should at least get his facts straight (MM Oct 19). The Northern Action Group (NAG) is not a band of dreamers lead by Mr Townson. NAG is a group within the community supported by 6286 residents and ratepayers signatures on a petition asking for proper democratic process. It was the government select committee that recommended North Rodney’s marriage with Kaipara, not NAG. After months of study, considering all the facts they had, including detailed submissions from the community, they recommended this path as the best option for North Rodney. Rodney Hide, swayed by an extremely small sector of the community (just 28 it turns out) and without any further investigation, decided he knew best and overruled his own advisors and forced us into the supercity. NAG does not seek an arbitrary divorce from Auckland and marriage

Full of distortions I was disgusted by the letter from Warren Agnew (MM Oct 19). This letter was nothing but a shameful personal attack on Bill Townson. Letters to the editor should present views on current matters and not be used to ridicule and malign a person who has good standing in the community. Bill and all the members of NAG (of which there are many not like the one-man band of Warren Agnew) have worked hard to promote a view which is laudable. The team collected well over 6000 signatures on a petition opposing North Rodney being included in the SuperCity and presented that to MP’s on the steps of Parliament. Warren’s letter is full of distortions and untruths. NAG wants the wishes of local people to be assessed and any consequent action to be by consensus. As for dragging us into Kaipara, it continued next page

with Kaipara. What it wants is for this community’s democracy to be restored by a proper study of all the facts and options, and ‘yes’ there are other options, and then put the facts to a binding referendum of the community. It is in the pursuit of democracy that the Local Board supported this initiative, which was lost due to one member pursuing his own agenda rather than the wish of his community. National Party candidate Mark Mitchell went to the former Hibiscus Matters office in error for our election interview. He quickly realised something wasn’t quite right – the office is now the Green Party’s campaign headquarters.

Performance anxiety Meanwhile, Mark is hoping to replace incumbent MP Lockwood Smith, he says is not able to replicate Dr Smith’s singing talents – most famously on display at the annual Rodney Age Concern fundraising concert. “I will definitely retain the concert, although audience numbers would drop off very fast if I sang,” Mark says. “My fiancé Peggy will sing and one way or other the concert will continue.”

Rugby form Nothing separates modern rugby from the old game more than fitness. On game day the mighty All Blacks have a low sugar, high fibre breakfast full of protein and complex carbs. The more experienced members of the Golden Oldies teams, who played in Warkworth recently, follow the same routine, except on their game days their protein is from a sausage sizzle, carbs are from a beer or two, and it is all finished off with rush of nicotine.

Who is the real Jake It seems the infamous Jake the Buss may find itself in a copyright clash with a fellow Rodney bus owner. The owners of another Jake the Bus, are thoroughly annoyed with their name being stolen and paraded around the country. Looks like there may be a battle of the buses in the near future. Council paperwork

would be more a process of Kaipara being absorbed into North Rodney but all these ideas are only a distraction designed to divert attention away from the main issue. I was saddened by the decision of Mahurangi Matters to print the letter from Warren Agnew as it verged on being libellous. A serious error of judgement by the editor. Simon Breeze, Matakana

In the article ‘Council change happens at glacial pace’ (MM Oct 19), reference is made to Leigh Hall and the cancellation of a booking for a family reunion “because of the amount of paper work involved.” In order to clarify any misconceptions readers may have, bookings for the use of Leigh Hall are still made by the committee and comprise one sheet of A4 paper which lays out the conditions of use and has a place for the usual details and signing. A copy of this is provided for the hirer(s). However, one of the conditions is the requirement for the hirer to obtain a liquor licence from Council if the need arises. The excessive paperwork mentioned had nothing to do with Leigh Hall. We are very aware of the difficulties those of us in the rural areas are having in dealings with the Council, where staff appear to have little understanding of the way in which our communities operate. Margaret Landsey, Secretary/treasurer, Leigh Hall Advisory Committee

Editor’s note: Feedback welcomes all views and debate from our community, even those we may or may not agree with.

Denying democracy When your correspondent Warren Agnew (MM Oct 19) expressed his beliefs, he undoubtedly did so with the claim of the democratic right to free speech. When this same person tells Mr Townson “to keep all his ideas to himself ” for a few years, presumably he means he alone has the democratic right of free speech and Mr Townson does not. When Mahurangi Matters reported that NAG’s call for a referendum was lost by five votes to four in the Rodney Local Board, five votes deprived 16,000 Rodney North voters the democratic right to vote in a referendum. Question: How many of those 16,000 eligible voters voted to join Auckland? D.R. Manson, Kaipara Flats

Board member praise I wish to compliment Local Board member James Rolfe on his recent Viewpoint (MM Oct 19). This demonstrates to all the sensible, clearthinking of our board representative. Continue with your stated policy direction James and we will be wellserved and represented. John Gamble, Wellsford

Awnings

With summer just around the corner there is no better time to sort those sun traps. A HomePlus awning keeps your family and patio furniture cool and protected from hot sun, showers or harmful UV rays far better than a tippy umbrella or other shade device. Waste management systems streamlined Auckland-wide Auckland Council’s draft waste plan, outlining ways to manage and minimise waste will be released for public comment later this month. Mayor Len Brown says becoming the world’s most liveable city, reducing harm to the environment, meeting government regulations and managing costs are key drivers of the plan. Infrastructure and Environment Services manager John Dragicevich says it will streamline waste management across Auckland and reduce the amount that is sent to landfill each year. “Until now, we’ve had seven different systems for collecting and dealing with waste across Auckland,” he says. “With the alignment of the legacy councils, we have the opportunity to review and streamline how we deliver waste services to all households.” The plan includes proposals for households in Auckland to have wheelie-bins for rubbish and recycling, with a choice of bin size to reflect the household. A new organic waste collection could capture households’ food/garden waste, for composting and other re-use. Households in the Gulf Islands will receive slightly different services, reflecting their unique geographic location. The plan also includes consistent funding of waste and recycling services. All households will pay directly for the kerbside refuse they put out. Rates or other funding sources will pay for kerbside recycling, organic waste and inorganic waste collections.

Auckland Council is promoting a new approach to managing waste.

“We have looked for waste solutions that will not only help to reduce the amount we send to landfill, but will treat more of our waste as a resource.” Any changes will be done in stages over the next four years after the plan is adopted in mid-2012.

The full draft plan and a summary with submission form will be available online, as well as at Council service centres, libraries and local board offices from November 17. Consultation closes on January 31.

Concerted effort to heal oil spill damage The environmental effects of the oil spilling from the Rena as it sits atop the Astrolabe Reef off Tauranga has galvanised Rodney Greens candidate Teresa Moore into action. The marine biologist says she is deeply affected by the large numbers of fish, birds and other wildlife that have suffered as a result, as well as the damage to the reef itself. Her response has been to organise an afternoon of live music, which will take place at Ascension Wine Estate in Matakana this month. The list of artists keen to perform continues to

grow, but currently lead singer of Op Shop’s Jason Kerrison, as well as Luke Thompson from Tauranga, Andy Richards and Caitlin Smith are confirmed. All proceeds from a silent auction and ticket sales for the concert, which takes place on November 12, from 2pm to 7pm, will go to the fund set up to clean up Mt Maunganui and Papamoa beaches, waterways and estuaries. Pre-sold tickets are $20 and $30 on the day. For more information go to www. ascensionwine.co.nz or phone 09 422 9601. Info: teresa.moore@greens.org.nz

Dotterels in the spotlight

New Zealand has over 15, 000 kilometres of coastline so shore species like the northern NZ dotterel should have an abundance of room to rest, nest and raise their young. The following article is part of a series brought to you by the Te Arai Dotterel Care Group. Our focus is on how visitors can help retain Te Arai’s biodiversity while still being able to enjoy Te Arai beach and its surrounds. The spotlight is on the northern NZ dotterel tuturiwhatu pukunui – also known as the red-breasted dotterel, which can be found scurrying along the shores of Te Arai for most of the year. You will often hear a dotterel before you see it as they are quick to alarm and have a high pitched peep. They also have an endearing shortlegged run and sport a brilliant rusty red breast when prospecting and breeding, between July and Photo, Sioux Plowman March. The ideal habitat for these birds consists of remote areas with exposed sand close to a fresh water source. They can be found in small numbers north of East Cape wherever these conditions are met. Moist inter-tidal sand provides a buffet of insects and crabs. The bird’s ground feeding, as opposed to fishing, sees them make ample use of their run and also allows the chicks to feed Photo, Reg Whale themselves from day one. Dotterel chicks and eggs are expertly camouflaged to blend in with the sand to protect them from aerial predators such as gulls. Eggs are incubated for 28 days and may not be left unattended for longer than 20 minutes – eggs may cool or overheat leading to embryo deaths so it is important not to disturb birds off their nests. The parent birds have a special alarm call to warn their chicks of any perceived threat, triggering them to freeze on the spot. This ensures the chicks are hard to see from the air, but leaves them vulnerable to crushing by vehicles, foot traffic and horses. How you can help – Over the breeding period volunteers are on site at Te Arai Beach to monitor bird safety. Fenced areas mark sites where the dotterel chicks may be but chicks can roam outside these areas so visitors should avoid the stream or at least stay below the high tide mark if crossing. Be mindful of the sounds of warning these birds make and keep dogs and vehicles off the beach. Lastly, the adult birds may feign a broken wing to entice you toward it and away from its chick. If you see this behaviour follow the bird whilst carefully watching underfoot. When you are far enough away you’ll see the dotterel resume its normal run.

8 | Mahurangimatters 2 November 2011 ADVERTORIAL

Pinehurst School focuses exclusively on the Cambridge CIE System When NZQA made the decision to end School Certificate, Sixth Form Certificate and Bursary, Pinehurst School made the decision to offer CIE as an alternative to NCEA and, almost a decade down the track; they are extremely pleased with their decision with clear evidence to prove CIE caters for all academic abilities. The benefit of being an independent school means Pinehurst is not required by the Ministry of Education and NZQA to offer NCEA as an assessment option. They have the flexibility to offer the best programme to suit all students. State or state integrated CIE schools are required to offer the New Zealand qualification as well as International Cambridge, forcing them to create a two tier system. Pinehurst has the luxury of being able to focus exclusively on the CIE system with school resources and teaching time wholly devoted to one curriculum. With the entire Pinehurst cohort sitting CIE, they have proven to the NZ educational community that Cambridge is accessible for all and that the prejudice that says that CIE is too difficult is patently untrue. The accessibility of CIE to a broad spectrum of students is also noted by governments in countries such as Singapore, where Cambridge has been used as the national curriculum. Also, within the UK, more schools are making the transition to International IGCSE and A Levels as they realise that the international qualification is

portable, transparent and accessible. At Pinehurst the students’ success in the Cambridge International Examinations and their access to top universities, locally and globally, is their clearest indicator that they made the right decision to focus solely on the CIE system. As

young people living in a global economy, Pinehurst believes it is not only appropriate, but also necessary, that students have access to an internationally recognised qualification. By Jacqueline White Headmistress Pinehurst Senior College

Long-time Millbrook Station owners put property on market One the largest privately owned land holdings on the east coast north of Auckland, Pakiri’s 1050 ha Millbrook Station, is on the market and attracting interest from New Zealand and abroad. In September 2007, its rateable value was assessed at around $10.3m but Bayleys agent Lin Norris says the vendors have “realistic” expectations, although the unique nature of the property make its value hard to estimate. “We haven’t had a lot of farm sales of late and the size and location of this makes it unique in Auckland, so it’s difficult to gauge the value. It’s really what the market’s going to determine,” he says. “While the rural market has been particularly slow over the past couple of years the sector is gradually picking up, and ‘quality’ enquiries have been received from a diverse range of people, including farmers, business people and overseas residents, including expat New Zealanders.” Property features include two homes, a range of farm buildings and an airstrip in addition to panoramic views to the coast, large waterfalls and what will be 400ha of covenanted native bush at the time of sale. It also comes with regular royalities from a joint venture quarry agreement with Holcim and the potential to gain future carbon credits. Henry Brown first developed the property in 1886, milking shorthorns and changing its name from Millbush to Millbrook, before selling it to horse coper Thomas Hoult. In 1921 it was sold to a Mr White, of Gisborne, who gave it to his son Gerald for his 21st birthday. The Longuet-Higgins family has lived there since 1950, when the late

Thomas Longuet-Higgins bought it sight unseen from the United Kingdom after spotting it in a magazine. He met his wife Anne while he was travelling to New Zealand via Melbourne and she remains involved in farming the property with her son Alexander and his wife Fiona. Bounded by Pakiri Rd and Matakana Rds, the land is being sold as seven titles and although sales of smaller packages will be considered, a single lot sale is preferred.

Mr Norris says that although in the long-term subdivision would add value, he sees the main benefits being the size and scope of the total property in its location so close to Auckland. A final open day for potential buyers will be held on November 5 from 11am to 1pm and tenders close on November 16, at 3pm. Mahurangi Matters contacted the Longuet-Higgins family but spokesperson Alexander said they were reluctant to comment at this stage.

The third week in October was a particularly difficult week for Council at a time when it should have been fantastic. The Auckland Plan, having taken hours of work, was out for consultation, the World Cup was one game away from completion and Auckland was looking good on the world stage. However, we live in a democracy and as such we need to protect the right of people to express their concerns. Following the demonstrations on Wall Street and other cities around the world about the need for the demise of capitalism, a group of protesters decided that week to take over Aotea Square. The ratepayers of the city over the last months have paid for this space to be upgraded and groomed to look great for the overseas visitors, let alone the overseas media. Suddenly, we have a group of people camping and building fences and other structures to form a protest. The many hours the parks staff have spent on this area are wasted. But we live in a democracy so these people can do what they are doing. Can they? Where is the responsibility on this issue? Again, democracy rules. We live in a free society even though sometimes politicians like myself have to bite their tongues and not express what they really feel. At the Regional Development and Operational meeting on October 20, the issue of Te Arai and any development there was on the confidential agenda. Suddenly, most councillors (interestingly not all) were inundated with emails accusing us of bribery and corruption, secret deals being done behind closed doors, all manner of things. It is impossible to answer each and every one and those I did, I found I was accused of being rude. The frustration is huge especially when the information is wrong. Leaked information hardly ever gives all the options, otherwise there is no concern. Te Arai is an interesting case because if the issue is saving the birds (the fairy terns) and protecting the uniqueness of the area, the only credible thing Council could do is close the beach to everyone. That way the beach would be protected, as would the birds and the flora and fauna. No surfers. No horses. No swimmers. No one. I bet that would release another avalanche of emails. Maybe sometimes we really need to take stock of our democracy, the freedom of expression and the responsibility of what goes with it. Maybe even take out the emotion and think through with a bit of common sense.

Legacy funding row immediately identify and reinstate the District Council’s legacy funding. Some say that the amount “lost” in the transition process could be more than $200,000. At least 11 applications totalling $101,406 were received from the RLB area alone. RLB member Tracey Martin says the board is very, very angry that Rodney has been left in this position. She says Council staff were made aware of the issue months ago, but the board has been stonewalled in its efforts to get it resolved. “It seems that because the District Council did not have a line item specifically for events, nothing went into the events budget for Rodney when the councils were amalgamated,” she says. “Whether or not it was an oversight on the part of former District Council staff, I don’t know. The fact is, that Rodney events have been left without funding that they are entitled to.” However, Council’s events manager Charlotte Cuffe, who was formerly the District Council’s major events advisor, says it wasn’t something staff had any say about. “There was no specific events funding under Rodney; the District Council only ever funded small events here and there,” she says. Costs were allocated from various operating expenditure budgets, ranging from tourism to civil defence and transport. Ms Cuffe says the figure of $200,000 is nowhere near correct. “It would be more like about $5000,” she says. “Rodney gave very little to community events per se.” However, former Mayor and current Councillor Penny Webster says the District Council was very supportive of events, but the difficulty was identifying it. She confirmed that the District Council did not have one events budget. “RDC staff were given a lot more discretion to use their budgets and waive resource consent costs to support events, and it is this spending that is difficult to quantify,” she says. “The cancelled Orewa Santa Parade is a prime example. They’ve never needed a resource consent before, but this time they were told they did and by the time I heard about it, it was too late to do anything.” The sorts of Rodney events funded in the past included the Manaakitanga

from page 1

Awards for tourism and economic development, the Mayoral Challenge, Rodney Live talent show, annual Civil Defence and Rodney Rural Fire Volunteers Honours nights, Kowhai Festival, Heart Walks and one-off festivals. Ms Cuffe says that while the methodology for disbursing grants will be reviewed for 2012/13, there will be no legacy funding available for Rodney events this year. In her report to the RLB, she suggested that it use its discretionary community funding budget ($25,110) to support community events in the current financial year. Both local boards have deferred making a decision until such time as the funding from legacy events has been reallocated to Rodney. Requests from the RLB area, submitted in the first two funding rounds but deemed ineligible, were: yy Warkworth Area Business Association ($5000) for Warkworth Christmas Parade yy Francis Hughes ($30,000) on behalf of K-Fest Limited (now renamed Bloom Festival) for K-Fest 2012 to be held at the Matakana Country Park in January. yy Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Society Inc. ($9000) for Arts in the Woolshed in March. yy Helensville 150th Celebrations Society ($7350) yy Te Hana Community Development Charitable Trust ($13,960) for the Te Hana Te Ao Marama Cultural Festival held from 9 September to 23 October 2011. yy Kaukapakapa Scout Group ($3225) for the Canoe & Kayak Rodney Coast Challenge in October. yy Wellsford Promotion Association ($2668) for the Wellsford Christmas Parade (has successfully obtained Community Grants funding) yy Get In2life Youth Development Trust ($14,454) for the Get In2It Street Games – The Big Wet, at various Rodney locations in January and February. yy Helensville Womens & Family Centre ($3051) for the Children’s Day Out. yy Tu Tangi Ora – South Kaipara Collective ($2698) for Sports Awards. yy Leigh Business Community ($10,000) for community event in March.

on hustings NZ’s place on the international stage, the economy, sale of state assets, policing and safety, and the environment are some of the key issues being raised with general election candidates in Rodney during the current campaign. Regarded as a safe blue ribbon seat, Rodney was won comfortably by National’s Lockwood Smith in 2008, capturing 60 percent of the 37,571 valid electorate votes cast. National also captured a majority (59 percent) of the party votes in 2008, compared to their nearest rival Labour which picked up 20 percent of the party vote in Rodney. But, as many of the candidates have pointed out, the world is a different place than it was in 2008. They say the fallout from the recession has made an impression on voters’ priorities. The six candidates – Colin Craig (Conservatives), Beth Houlbrook (Act), Tracey Martin (NZ First), Mark Mitchell (National), Teresa Moore (Greens), and Christine Rose (Labour) – introduce themselves on the following six pages where they make their pitch for your vote.

Understanding the MMP referendum vote The Electoral Commission has provided the following information to help clarify public understanding of the Referendum that will be conducted alongside the General Election: Referendum questions Voters will be asked two questions – yy The first question asks whether the voter wants to keep MMP or whether they want to change to another voting system. yy The second question asks which of four other voting systems the voter would choose if NZ decides to change from MMP. Voters can answer both questions, or just question one or question two. If at least half of voters opt to keep MMP, there will be an independent review of MMP next year to recommend changes that should be made to the way it works.

The Electoral Commission will conduct the review, incorporating a consultation process, which will give the public adequate time and opportunity to give their views. The Electoral Referendum Act (2010) specifies that the Electoral Commission must review: yy The five percent party vote threshold for a party to be eligible for allocation of list seats yy The one electorate seat threshold for a party to be eligible for allocation of list seats yy The effects of population change on the ratio of electorate seats to list seats yy The effect of a party’s candidates winning more seats than the party would be entitled as a result of the party vote yy The capacity of a person to be both

a constituency candidate and a list candidate yy A party’s ability to determine the order of candidates on its party list and the inability of voters to rank list candidates in order of preference yy Other matters as referred to it by the Minister of Justice or the House of Representatives. The size of Parliament and Maori representation will not be reviewed, but the Commission may consider any other aspects of the MMP voting system. The Commission must report back to the Minister of Justice by October 31, 2012. If more than half of voters opt to change the voting system, Parliament will decide if there will be another Referendum in 2014 to choose between MMP and the alternative voting system. VOTE Labour for Rodney • stop asset sales • first $5000 earned tax free • tackling youth unemployment • planned economic recovery Authorised by Christine Rose, 355 Foster Rd, RD1, Kumeu 0841

Christine is from a farming family which has lived in Rodney for four generations and she served as a Rodney District and Auckland Regional Councillor for 15 years. She taught politics and philosophy at Auckland University, and is involved in several grass-roots environmental and arts organisations. Christine is passionate about Rodney, NZ and its communities. Her particular concerns are environmental management and transport, and she supports arts and cultural development. She believes in working with communities, farmers and businesses to improve economic, social and environmental conditions. She’s a proud supporter of Kiwibank and other nationally-owned assets, and motivated to ensure they remain in public ownership. Christine’s political views were shaped positively by her rural upbringing, and negatively by the new-right policies of Thatcher, Reagan and Rogernomics. She is standing as a Labour candidate to support a return to economic stability, savings, and to advocate for better environmental protection and workers’ rights. Christine’s spare time is spent in the great outdoors, camping, tramping, cycling and kayaking. She is 42 on Labour’s party list and would become a list member if Labour polled 38 percent of the vote plus securing constituency seats.

Her childhood memories include fishing with her grandfather on the Kaipara Harbour, strolling down Tindalls Bay Beach with her great grandmother and visiting her cousins in Matheson’s Bay. She also brought up her children on Whangaparaoa Peninsula. As a marine biologist, she completed her Bachelor of Science at Auckland University, studying at the Leigh Marine Laboratory. Her sense of adventure had her join MAF in a pioneering role as a scientific observer on Russian deep-sea trawlers, which required spending eight months at sea near the Sub-Antarctic Islands. With the sea in her blood, Teresa ran the Turkish division of Sunsail yacht charters, looking after 40 staff and 140 yachts. She later set up her own boat charter company, with bases in Auckland, the Bay of Islands and Tonga and passed on the skills she’d learned to others as a business consultant. Teresa recently completed a Master of Management in sustainability and the potential of solar power for New Zealand.

Mark Mitchell National Party Mark Mitchell found his way into politics after international security company. He says his shift into the political arena came when he began working with NZ Trade & Enterprise while he was based overseas. “Being offshore and working in emerging markets, I could see there were real opportunities for our entrepreneurs and business people. I became involved in helping government agencies to introduce those opportunities to New Zealanders. That’s when I realised I could make a genuine contribution.” Mark’s family are strong National Party supporters – his grandfather, Frank Gill, was a cabinet minister in Rob Muldoon’s government – and Mark says the party’s principles and values are clearly aligned with his own. On the campaign trail, Mark says he is getting positive feedback about how the Government is performing on one of the issues that is closest to his heart – community safety and policing. He says another pressing issue raised by voters is the economy. “Rating agencies have confidence in the Government’s economic plan, but the global situation was always going to have an impact on NZ. However, sometimes being further afield is an advantage and we have very strong primary products which puts us in a good position for future growth.” Local issues raised by Rodney residents are the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway extension and the building of the Penlink Road from Whangaparaoa to Redvale. “I am 110 percent behind the motorway extension from Puhoi to Warkworth. It is critical in terms of safety for road users. That is one of the worst stretches of road in NZ in terms of crash fatalities and injuries. “It is also critical that the motorway be built to stimulate the economy, in North Rodney and also in Northland. I’ve spoken to business people who have businesses outside Rodney, but live in Rodney, who if the motorway went ahead would relocate to areas such as Warkworth and be employing local people and growing the local economy.” With family living in Whangaparaoa, Mark says he is determined to be proactive on the building of the Penlink Road. “I’m a strong advocate for Penlink because of the need to have another road on and off the peninsula. In the past I have been heavily involved with billion

a career that spans police work and running an dollar plus infrastructure projects and part of the difficulty with Penlink is that no-one has taken ownership of it, to drive it forward. The feedback I am getting is that it is an Auckland Council problem. The public-private partnership model is the most obvious way to deliver this project and I have already been meeting with possible investors from overseas with a view to making it happen. “I would also like to see the park and ride at Silverdale be properly planned and developed so it is substantial enough to cope with future growth. Areas such as Millwater will bring huge population growth to the Hibiscus Coast and public transport, as well as other infrastructure, must be planned with that in mind.” The retention of the northern rail line is something Mark is not fully briefed on, but he says rail needs to be economically viable before any taxpayers’ money should go into it. “If there were more commercial use of the line, it would be viable to retain it.” Mark is a supporter of National’s “mixed ownership model” for state assets. “Mixed ownership is a win-win situation. NZ investors have been very limited in what they can invest in – financial companies and property. The sale of state assets will give them the opportunity to invest in good quality NZ assets; I would rather see dividends go to NZ investors than have to pay interest to overseas lenders.” A background in international trade has put economic growth for the region high on Mark’s list of priorities. “My overall drive is to see economic growth for Rodney’s businesses. That means helping Rodney’s entrepreneurs; we have some great businesses doing some wonderful stuff, such as Dad’s Pies in Silverdale who are exporting their products. “We must be able to grow our tradable sector. Along with that, we must get our fair share of investment in infrastructure. I will push for fast broadband for businesses and schools and ensure we get that rollout. “I’m in favour of having well planned growth in Rodney, but combined with investment in infrastructure so we can provide and retain a great way of life and everyone can come and enjoy what we have.”

Mark’s family have lived and worked in Rodney for four generations and he is passionate about the region and committed to generating economic growth and creating new jobs. After completing his education at Rosmini College and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, he worked in farming, policing, and most recently, was founder and CEO of a successful international business. Mark will marry Peggy Bourne, widow of rally ace Possum Bourne, later this month. As a parent of four children who attend Orewa College, he is committed to supporting teachers, lifting education standards and getting good information to all parents. His community work includes involvement in the Springboard programme in Warkworth and Orewa surf lifesaving club and he is also an honorary member of the Warkworth Rotary Club. After spending 14 years in the police force, the community’s safety and policing issues are a priority for Mark who says he will back strong law and order policies. He supports National’s principles of careful economic management and sensible decisions.

The Northland electorate extends from Leigh and Wellsford, north to Cape Reinga. The seat was won by National’s John Carter in 2008, who captured nearly 60 percent of the 33,633 valid electorate votes cast. Mr Carter retired this year, after more than 24 years in Parliament. His nearest rival, Labour’s Shane Jones, polled 29 percent of the vote. The following candidates, three of the five standing in Northland, responded to our invitation to supply a summary of their issues.

Mike Sabin National Party Mike Sabin hopes to lead Northland in a plan for economic growth that will find solutions to under-performance and social dysfunction and enable it to achieve its socio-economic potential. However, he says decisions need to be practical and keep borrowing under control. “There’s no place for rash, unaffordable promises.” Mike supports improvements to infrastructure including provision of better roads and extending the motorway north from Puhoi, and provision of reliable broadband to connect with the global marketplace. He would also work towards improving education standards. “We need to get good information to parents, identify kids falling behind and help them catch up, and develop new skills training opportunities.” He says law and order policies should put victims first and deal with serious repeat offenders. He also favours early

intervention for young offenders and measures to win the drug war on ‘P’. Mike thinks public services can be efficient and affordable by prioritising frontline services where resources are needed most. He is number 61 on the National Party list.

Pauline Evans Green Party Candidate for Northland

ü Creating smart, green jobs ü Clean waterways and coastline ü Bringing children out of poverty Mobile: 021 032 6503 www.greens.org.nz/Pauline.Evans

Lynette Stewart Labour Party Concern about Northland’s socioeconomic decline and its impact on families, has prompted Lynette Stewart to stand as a Labour candidate. Unemployment is an issue that can no longer be glossed over, she says. “We need strong economic policy to reduce child/family poverty by resetting the economic environment to encourage job creation, pay increases, skill development with equal opportunities and a fair go for all New Zealanders to participate in our future.” She says Northlanders are concerned about the lack of job prospects for school leavers, the absence of trade apprenticeships, a lack of economic growth, National’s record $18.4 billion deficit and inadequate housing, which is creating urgent health and safety issues for families and older people, already struggling. They also fear the impact of the growing income gap, tertiary education and student loans, road/ transport issues, environment issues, the sale of NZ-owned assets, the negative effect of September downgrades by Fitch and Standard and Poor’s, and the consequent rising of interest rates on new Government bonds. Number 39 on the Labour Party

list, Lynette stands by Labour’s commitment to promptly deliver on all its election promises according to its stated policies over the next three years, if it becomes government. A Northlander of Maori and Scottish descent, with extensive working experience of Northland and environs, Lynette chaired Northland District Health Board (NDHB) from 20012009, and has served on numerous national boards. She has vast executive experience of the primary and secondary health sector interface, including Maori and mainstream health and disability development across the wider Northern region.

Pauline Evans Green Party Pauline Evans is number 36 on the Green Party list. She believes the government must address pollution of waterways and the invasion of plant and animal pests, protect wildlife, kai moana and coastlines from oil spills, prevent the introduction of GM field crops and properly consult tangata whenua and affected communities over the future of mining. She says Northland’s often seasonal income and jobs are affected by droughts and world economics and almost half of Northland’s children live in poverty, which has implications for health, education, youth unemployment and crime. There are concerns about rising food prices, keeping our business centres and main streets viable and accessing affordable tertiary education. She supports retaining Northland rail to prevent more heavy trucks using the region’s roads. The Greens have worked effectively with others to implement green programmes, like the home insulation scheme, and in the next three years will focus on nurturing a smart, green, sustainable economy, she says.

“Priorities include getting 100,000 NZ children out of poverty, cleaning up waterways, diversifying transport, stimulating the green economy through government leadership and direct investment, driving job creation in renewable energy export technology and keeping land, energy resources and profits in Kiwi ownership,” she says. Details of a plan to create 100,000 green jobs, at a cost of $4.082 billion over three years can be found at www.greens. org.nz/greenjobs.

Local Trades Ltd

When Linda Robinson first moved to the Matakana area, she identified a need for putting people in touch with reliable local tradesmen and women. Six years later, this has become a reality with the recent launch of her new business Local Trades Ltd. For many years, Linda has been working as a self-employed administrator, helping local businesses with their administration needs. She is also involved with the Warkworth Chapter of Business Networking International, a former coordinator of the local Her Business Network and until recently, on the committee of Matakana Community Group. She will draw on these organisational skills to provide an interface between local trades people and customers. “People who need a tradesperson can contact me with the confidence that I’ll find them the right person for the job, whose services are tried and trusted,” she says. “No more than three representatives of any trade will be on my books at any one time.” Linda says she sees the service being particularly useful for holidaymakers or people who are new to the area, who do not already have an established network of known and reliable

tradesmen. She also hopes the elderly will find it useful. The list of trades covered includes everything from water filter and airconditioning specialists, to home maintenance and building tradespeople. Computer and IT services are also listed. “There are still some gaps so I would welcome enquiries from any tradespeople who would like to become involved.” Linda says networking comes naturally to her and part of the service will be ensuring that the job has been completed to the satisfaction of the client. Customers can also access her trades list online.

A new business specialising in Rentals and Property Management has opened on the corner of Mill Lane and Elizabeth Street, in Warkworth. Warkworth Rentals & Property Management owner Leanne Sanford has seven years experience in the property management industry and is looking forward to providing a quality service to both landlords and tenants. She says her business will focus specifically on the management of long-term residential properties, between Puhoi and Mangawhai. She also offers a ‘find a tenant service’ for landlords who wish to manage their own properties but don’t want the hassle of finding a new tenant. “There are a number of checks that need to be performed on a prospective tenant and my expertise in this area is

second-to-none,” she says. “The demand for rentals in this area, mainly three-bedroomed homes, considerably outstrips what is available. The area is particularly popular with young families looking to trade their hectic city life for an idyllic country or rural lifestyle.” Leanne says Warkworth Rentals will offer landlords the peace-of-mind that their tenants have been screened properly, that there is zero tolerance for rent arrears and that their properties are inspected at regular intervals with any maintenance issues reported immediately. “Ultimately, my point of difference, other than the competitive management rate, is communication. Without communication between landlords and tenants and your property manager – you have nothing.”

A competitive market

Typically, spring time has brought a surplus of vendors from out of the woodwork and there are now a number of properties of similar type competing in a market where purchasers have become cautious. So how can you set your property apart to ensure a timely and successful sale? In most instances, a successful sale can be attributed to marketing and price. A maxim often quoted in real estate is that you cannot sell a secret. If you think that a real estate agent often just promises you the world, puts some photos in the paper, and runs a couple of open homes, in order to charge you an obscene amount of money, then think again. Proper marketing is absolutely essential, and a good agent will make their commission back for you and then some. Sure, you may obtain a sale privately, and save several thousand dollars on commission, but are you sure that you achieved the best price possible? There may be someone out there who doesn’t use the internet such as retirees, and some baby boomers, or who didn’t see your road sign, who would pay more. That said, assuming your property is fully exposed to the market with a good agent, then all that is left to consider is price. Of course, many vendors simply cannot afford to reduce their asking price significantly, due to relatively high mortgages. What is important here isn’t so much the absolute value, or asking price, but how it relates to others in the market. Purchasers will weigh up a number of options and make up their own mind as to value. As a vendor, you can change the relative value in a purchaser’s mind, without spending a lot of money. These somewhat obvious items should be at the top of your list for adding costeffective value and marketability to your property: Street appeal – mow the lawns, trim trees, tidy gardens, wash the exterior of the house, remove any rubbish, water-blast driveways and paths, and replace any rotten weatherboards or roof tiles. Inside – get rid of the clutter, clean the carpets, clean the oven, remove any mold or mildew, replace any damaged curtains, put a single bed in the study (buyers will see a fourth bedroom), consider some cosmetic painting especially if it will brighten a dark room, ensure everything works. Beyond these short-term solutions, there are other ways to add value. However, we can consider these at some other time. A number of Northland businesses were finalists in the 2011 Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards. They included The Kauri Museum, Mangawhai’s Heads 106.4FM and Sport Northland. All entries are considered for the Northland Regional Council Sustainable Business Award, the ACC Workplace Safety Award and the Regional Business Partnership Judges Commendation Award. Judging was held on October 28.

Time marches on The 93rd anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between Germany and the Allied Forces, heralding the end of hostilities in World War I, will be marked on November 11. It was the prelude to peace negotiations that lead to the Treaty of Versailles but it is the Armistice, rather than the Treaty, which has become the focus of remembrance celebrations. The scene was set in the forest of Compiegne, 65km north east of Paris. Signatories met in the private railway carriage of Ferninand Foch, representative of the French people. This carriage became even more famous when Hitler forced the French to sign surrender documents in 1940 in the same place. News of the Armistice reached New Zealand on November 12, 1918, and celebrations were held in many places. In Auckland, health authorities banned any organised gatherings in a bid to stop the spread of influenza. Despite these precautions, there were more than 1100 deaths in the region from the epidemic. For New Zealand soldiers still in France, there was little evidence of rejoicing. As recently as a week before the Armistice troops had taken part in the recapture of the town of Le Quesnoy. The attack on the old fortress town involved scaling

the outer ramparts using ladders. The battle, which claimed the lives of 90 New Zealanders, has special significance in military history. The liberation of the town endeared the soldiers to the residents resulting in long-lasting friendly relationships. The history of the New Zealand Division records that a Service of Thanksgiving was held on November 14. Most of the troops then faced a long march to join the Allied Army of Occupation in Germany. The remembrance of the Armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month became part of the New Zealand calendar from the first anniversary in November 1919. Directions came from the government to all local authorities asking that they arrange for the suspension of all vehicular traffic for two minutes from

11am. In schools and work places, two minutes of silent remembrance was observed. More than 12,000 New Zealand lives were lost and there could be few people not affected in some way. Small communities had farewelled their soldiers with gifts and as they returned, celebrations were held to welcome them home. Ahuroa was one such community, where each returning soldier received a gold medal known as the Ahuroa Medal. Presented at social occasions arranged for the purpose, a break was taken in the evening to remember those who would not be returning. It would be interesting to know if any of those medals are still treasured by the families concerned. From 1945, Armistice Day became Remembrance Sunday held on the second Sunday in November.

The annual Kowhai Festival is a tremendous event for the Mahurangi district and the town owes Lesley and her team a huge vote of thanks. They, like the many others in our community who freely donate their time and talents to not-for-profit projects and events, are the people who define what it means to be part of a caring and sharing community. The festival needs more volunteers so why not consider being involved? A planning meeting will be held in the Warkworth RSA downstairs meeting room, on November 23 at 7pm. All are invited, and you can be assured of a very warm welcome.

Expo showcases European travel

Pathways pacer.pathway@gmail.com

With all the recent festivities and focus on rugby, you could start to believe that is all that New Zealanders have recreation time for. However, through many parts of the country, there has been a huge development of cycleways and/or walkways and a parallel rise in their use by new converts and old stalwarts alike. After the recent publicity, it is clear that there is a lot interest locally in the proposal to develop a network of pathways to connect the communities of east Rodney. Over summer, I’ll write a series of columns on the project plans and also to report on progress. I’ll briefly start by covering the ‘what’ do we want to build. The intention is quite simple and that is to plan and develop a pathway for walkers and cyclists to connect the communities of east Rodney. This will be designed and constructed to established standards and graded accordingly. This pathway will be off-road, wherever possible, and this can be achieved with paper roads, easements over private land, and potentially across other Council/Government lands. Where it is not possible to take the route off-road there needs to be good separation of pathway and roadway, particularly on the open road areas. With our waterways there will be a need for a number of bridges. The pathway will, in turn, provide access to existing and proposed walking/cycling pathways and mountain bike trails. This will be a very challenging project for our small communities but the progress that has been made by groups of volunteers on the Omaha-Point WellsMatakana legs is nothing short of inspiring. This project is about building on what they have created and the experience gained. It also makes sense in such a project to learn from the experience gained elsewhere and last week I was in Hawkes Bay. Fortunately, I was able to meet with several of the people who have been instrumental in developing the network of pathways there. They are now calling the bay the Cycling Capital of NZ and that looks well-justified, both in the extent and quality of the pathways and also the number of people seen walking, running or cycling along them. The community, in the form of the local Rotary clubs and a wealthy benefactor, has contributed substantially to the project by way of fundraising around $3 million. Hawkes Bay city and regional councils have huge areas of land along the oceanfront and the river control system including stopbanks. This network of many kilometres has been developed entirely on ‘public’ land with major sections completely off-road.

North Rodney’s largest-ever UK/ Europe travel show returns to Warkworth this Saturday, November 5. Among the line-up of guest speakers will be Dave Currie, who has been the spokesperson and Chef de Mission for all New Zealand Olympic Games teams since 2002. He will continue in this role in London next July/August and will be available to share his tips on travel to the Olympics. Travel suppliers representing more than 100 different travel companies, hotels, cruise lines, airlines and tour operators will be at the Mahurangi College Auditorium, from 10.30am to 3pm. Show organiser, Chris Smith from Harvey World Travel Warkworth, says the aim is to bring Europe to Rodney and showcase what is on offer for 2012. He says even if people have only dreamt of travelling to Europe or they are planning on going in the next two or three years, this is a great opportunity to grab a taste of what’s available. During the day, there will be a schedule of 20-minute European destination and product presentations, along with plenty of time to talk with UK and Europe experts. Other guests will include Ann Mellor, of the Living Channel, who will introduce her range of personallyescorted tours, some featuring Croatia and Italy, and including Italian food experiences.

Decorative bra competition makes its point Disaster watch Staff at Kawau Bay Health in Warkworth helped promote breast cancer awareness last month, by holding a Bras for a Cause competition. Kawau Bay Health nurse team leader Jo Prior says they decided to run the competition because they work closely with Breast Screen Aotearoa and with cancer patients. “We wanted to raise awareness of the disease, while having a bit of fun,” she says. “The decorated bras look fantastic; a lot of work has gone into them.” A total of six bras were entered in the competition, which was to be judged by a representative of Breast Screen Aotearoa. Avoiding pollen exposure Here are some tips for allergy sufferers to minimise pollen exposure this spring: Keep windows closed to prevent pollen from drifting into the home • Minimise early morning activity when pollen is usually emitted – between 5am and 10am • Keep car windows closed when travelling • Stay indoors on windy days when pollen may be present in higher amounts • Take a vacation during the height of the pollen season to a more pollen-free area, such as the beach or sea • Avoid mowing the lawn and freshly cut grass • Machine-dry bedding and clothing – pollen may collect in laundry if it is hung outside to dry.

Communities around Rodney’s coastlines are working with Auckland Council on establishing Civil Defence Neighbourhood Response Plan. The idea of formulating response plans within communities was introduced by Auckland Council in November and so far six are in place including Mahurangi East and Waiwera, Omaha and Kawau Island. In the pipeline are plans for Warkworth, Puhoi, Scotts Landing and Pt Wells. The plans are designed to enable the community to respond and remain selfreliant for at least three days without any external assistance in the event of an emergency. They include details of people and resources that will be needed to assist in an emergency, such as the locations of generators, the owners of large boats and medical professionals. The Mahurangi East plan, which was one of the first adopted in Auckland, rates cyclones and power outages as the highest risk factors, followed by landslips and road closure. Mahurangi East Civil Defence coordinator Terry Norris says most incidents are managed on a day-to-day basis by the 111 emergency services. “The plan is activated in response to an event and links the community with civil defence in Auckland.”

Amberlea picks up on rugby cup fever Beauty and health for women of all ages

An expo designed specifically for women aged over 40 is being held in the Catholic Church Hall, Alnwick Street, Warkworth, on November 19. The event is being organised by Dorothy Goudie, the owner of Dorothy’s Fashion Store in Warkworth. “This will be a great opportunity for women from all walks of life to focus on themselves and their own health and appearance for an afternoon,” she says. The line-up of speakers and exhibitors will include Raoul Robertson from Rococo Hair, Christine Rauner from Curves, Debbie Ferguson from Franklins Pharmacy, Diane Breen from the Village Health Shop Matakana, and Dorothy herself. Talks will cover topics such as hair care and styles, strength and fitness, healthy eating, makeup and skincare, and fashion. Dorothy says women’s bodies, skin and sense of style often change after they turn 40 and sometimes this catches them by surprise. “What once used to suit us often doesn’t anymore and the change can be a bit confusing. But it isn’t the end of the world. The expo will show us how to make the most of our beautiful bodies whatever our age.” The Beauty Fest starts at 1.30pm. Tickets cost $5 and will be available at the door. Like the rest of the country, Amberlea Rest Home residents caught a dose of rugby fever during the recent Rugby World Cup, unanimously supporting the national team. To add to the fan zone atmosphere, staff donned rugby supporters’ outfits and activity coordinator Val Watson organised three young Orewa boys, Jacob, Sam and Luke Currin, dressed in All Black shirts of their favourite players to perform a haka and sing the national anthem. Val says all 50 residents were enthusiastic about the event, celebrating the final with fish and chips and champagne. She says they regularly take an interest in sporting events including the Olympics and cricket, and this week were celebrating again in support of the Melbourne Cup.

Kiwis slack on oral hygiene

An international Oral-B Powerbrush study has revelled that one in 10 New Zealanders brush their teeth less than once a day. The study also found that 82 percent of New Zealanders don’t floss once a day and 75 percent don’t use a mouthwash.

Travel medicine

New Zealanders love to travel. Often this involves going from a place of low risk to areas of high risk. In addition, we often do things abroad that we wouldn’t do at home. There are a lot of things abroad that can hurt you and only some of these are infections. Consider where you are going, how long you are going for and what risks you may encounter whilst overseas. Updating pre-existing vaccinations – Your doctor may advise updating influenza, tetanus, polio or measles vaccinations. These are usually inexpensive and easy to do in the surgery. New vaccinations – Discuss vaccinations with your GP at least four weeks before your travel. Some vaccinations require a course of injections over several weeks, for example hepatitis A. Other vaccinations, such as yellow fever, require referral to a certified travel clinic. Some countries refuse entry without yellow fever vaccination. Medications – You may require medications to prevent infections such as malaria. Malaria treatment needs to be started one week before, and continued until two weeks after visiting a malarial area, as the parasite can ‘hide’ in the blood stream. Other medications are to be taken to treat illness such as antibiotics for traveller’s diarrhoea. But don’t rely on vaccinations alone. Avoid mammal bites. Any mammal, no matter how cute, can carry rabies, and rabies can be fatal. Avoid insect bites. Even while taking medication one can still contract malaria. Cover up, sleep under a net and wear light-coloured clothes. Use an insect repellent and avoid going out at dawn and dusk when the malarial mosquito is about. Unforeseen situations – Most travel incidents are not caused by infections but more often by illness, crime or accident. Update all regular medications and ask your GP for a travel letter. Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance and declare any pre-existing medical conditions. Be familiar with your destinations. Safetravel.govt.nz is a good site for New Zealand travellers and is updated regularly. It carries information on areas of political unrest. Lastly, take steps to avoid exposure to crime. In many countries we look and dress differently. Try not to attract unwanted attention and avoid areas or times of night that may be dangerous. Elderly group left in a grey area A group that represents more than 11,000 people in Auckland believes it has been overlooked in the draft Auckland Plan. Grey Power Auckland region zone director Bill Rayner and Grey Power Warkworth and Districts president Anne Martin say they are both disappointed at the lack of recognition for the elderly across Auckland, in a plan that represents the city’s growth and development for the next 30 years. “We feel sidelined,” Anne says. “Many other groups have been adequately recognised, yet there is nothing in the plan for the elderly. Emphasis in the draft document has been on the young and that is commendable as they are our future, but a considerable chunk

of the population has not been heard and it is rather unfair. “The elderly need to be recognised with sensitivity and care to ensure they are integrated comfortably into the new Auckland.” Anne has put two submissions into the draft plan; the emphasis has been on ensuring there is adequate housing and transport available for Rodney’s elderly population. Ray says that Grey Power meets quarterly with Mayor Len Brown but feels this isn’t sufficient. “We are considering setting up an Age Concern Advisory Panel if a positive ageing strategy is not adopted as part of the plan.”

Drink-driving ad hits the mark

The NZ Transport Agency hopes the positive response to its new drink-drive ad campaign is a sign that young New Zealanders are ready to take up the challenge of speaking up when a mate is about to drive drunk. Chief executive Geoff Dangerfield says the agency started hearing from people almost as soon as the new ad went to air on Sunday October 23.

pride warkworth Team work and dedication deliver valuable legacy The collective power of Lions has already left a lasting legacy in Warkworth, but the dedicated members of the world’s largest service organisation continue to work towards improving lives and the community. Formed in 1917 by founder Chicago man Melville Jones, Lions boasts 1.4 million members in around 200 countries and is the only service group in the world to be invited to join the United Nations. In New Zealand 400 clubs contribute an estimated $100 million to charitable causes. Warkworth has both Warkworth Lions Club which caters for men and women, and the women-only Kowhai Lions. Although Warkworth Lions has consistently maintained around 34 members it’s keen to attract more. One of three past district governors in the group, Rob Ewenson says there is as much to be gained as to be given in the role and the long service of many members is testament both to their dedication and the organisation. “Lions is a great training ground for people seeking leadership experience or new skills. There’s no compulsion to stay, but many people do because they like what it offers. Wearing a

Lions badge can make you instantly welcome around the world,” he says. Registered nurse Angela Taylor recently became Warkworth Lions only current female member, after her husband Trevor joined when they moved here three years ago. She says it’s been a good way to get to know the community and she was keen to contribute after experiencing the good work and “genuine, downto-earth” nature of club members. Lions’ efforts can be found in numerous community assets including the riverbank playground, Warkworth Wharf, Totara Park Hall, a boardwalk at Kauri Park Museum

and the Omaha restoration project, and furnishings in the new Mahurangi College Hall. The club also maintains Kawau Island’s Camp Bentzon. “Club members have spent over 500 hours this year alone, renovating, repairing and helping build new facilities including two new lodges,” Rob says. Other assistance has included funding digital talking machines for the blind, converting can tabs and wine bottle tops into cash for the Kidney Kids Support Group, buying a specialised wheelchair for a Snells Beach child and delivering free firewood to needy pensioners. The club already has a busy diary for the year ahead, including work on the

riverside enhancement project to the cement works, building a bridge by the sewage treatment plant, helping develop Omaha quarry gardens, getting involved with Springboard, and raising funds to buy an insulin pump for a severely diabetic girl. Members also take pride in Lions’ ability to respond instantly with direct aid to people in natural disasters, having generated more than $1.5 million in local and international contributions for Christchurch and provided funding and three community meeting houses for Samoa since the tsunami. of

pride warkworth Lion’s efforts return rich rewards Warkworth’s John Frogley has been a Lion for almost half a century, joining just seven years after the service group was established in New Zealand in 1955. Through Lions clubs in Takapuna, Northcote and Warkworth, he’s taken on every role, including president, and in 1988-89 became a district governor, responsible for 67 clubs. Helping others comes naturally to the now 83-year-old, who says he is following the example of his communityminded father. “I get the satisfaction of helping other people, that’s my passion,” he says. A scout master and ARP (Air Raid Protection) volunteer warden during the war, John initially joined the Masons, but prefers the Lions’ community-focus. He says Lions let their actions do the talking, promoting causes, rather than themselves, which means the public aren’t aware of the scope of their achievements, including establishing the New Zealand Liver Transplant Service in Auckland and Middlemore’s intensive burns unit, as well as major contributions to Starship Children’s Hospital. The group also works in tandem with numerous other organisations, boosting manpower

and funds to keep projects running year after year. Although he’s received a number of awards, including Lion’s highest honour, the Melville Jones Award, John says the real rewards are the outcomes of Lions’ work, which range from young cancer sufferers enjoying a break at Camp Quality to providing a specialised pool for a boy with a serious bone disease and construction of community facilities like Warkworth wharf. John says it was inspiring to travel around as governor and see the innovative ways in which clubs were helping their communities and he’s enjoyed working with like-minded people. He says organising is his strength, but he is still hands-on, including pitching in recently to split firewood at Camp Bentzon and regularly working with a small team to run Lion’s riverside market. In total he’s contributed hundreds of thousands of hours and as current secretary, still fields calls most days, but he says there’s a strict rule that members only contribute as they are able. “We state most emphatically that your family comes first, your business comes second and Lions comes third.” One of the founders of Mitre 10, John

Visionary giving goes global Lions has been a committed supporter of the blind internationally since 1925 when Helen Keller challenged the organisation’s members to become “knights of the blind” in a crusade against darkness. Their response, SightFirst has since worked on numerous projects aimed at preventing blindness, restoring eyesight and improving eye care for hundreds of millions of people worldwide making it the world’s largest contribution to the cause. Since 1990, two SightFirst fundraising campaigns have raised $500 million to help provide vision for all and NZ clubs continue to be committed supporters of the Royal NZ for the Blind.

pride warkworth Youth development a key focus Lions are looking to the future by investing heavily in youth through programmes that boost their potential and self-esteem. Lions Club member and Mahurangi College teacher Les Cave says that when it comes to youth a lot of the money is directed locally, enabling motivated youngsters to challenge themselves and develop leadership skills. Clubs have raised more than $200,000 collecting old coins and unwanted foreign currency for their Heads Up for Kids initiative, offering outdoor education programmes and scholarships to youth. Mahurangi College student Michael-Lydia Winiana is among recent recipients, winning a video camera and 10day Spirit of Adventure voyage by promoting herself and the fundraising programme through Facebook. A sailing novice, she joined 30 other trainees, learning sailing and team skills, taking a turn at a night watch and seeing dolphins and orcas along the way. Elected first mate by her fellow trainees, Michael-Lydia also won the Amo Kura Award for community spirit and organisers reported that she was one of the best trainees they had ever had. She says she’s grateful for the trip, which taught her a lot and was an experience she’d recommend to anyone. It’s not the first time she’s benefited through Lions, having won this year’s northern regional competition for the Lions Speechmaker Contest, in which the national winner receives a trip to the United States. Lions also teams up with other service groups to offer four partially-funded Spirit of NZ trips to Mahurangi College students each year and provides other college

Next year’s winery tour line-up whets the musical palette

The sassy and supremely talented Gin Wigmore will headline the 2012 Classic Hits Winery Tour, which will play at Ascension Wine Estate in February. Others on the bill include reformed legends The Mutton Birds and talented newcomers Avalanche City. Now in its sixth year, and with a brand new presenting sponsor, the Classic Hits Winery Tour, formerly the More FM Winery Tour, is a firmly-established national touring summer entertainment event. In 2012 there will be 16 shows in 14 venues nationwide. Gin is recently back from the US where she recorded her sophomore album Gravel & Wine, which will be released on November 7. She has enjoyed massive success since the release of her EP Extended Play, followed by the multi-platinum debut album Holy Smoke, scooping four Tui Awards in last year’s NZ Music Awards and massive airplay success with I Do, Oh My, Under My Skin and the just released Black Sheep. “I grew up as a big fan of Don and The Mutton Birds so I’m excited to be on tour with them,” she says. “And Avalanche City are so hot right now. It’s a great bill. I can’t wait to play in some of New Zealand’s most spectacular outdoor settings and drink a few glasses of wine on this legendary tour!” The Mutton Birds join the Winery Tour celebrating not one, but two milestones; 2012 marks 20 years since the release of the band’s self-titled debut album and 10 years since their last show. With timeless Kiwi anthems such as Anchor Me and Dominion Road, the band is reuniting just for the Winery Tour. The tour will play at Ascension on Waitangi Weekend, February 3 and 4.

Avalanche City, Gin Wigmore and The Mutton Birds are heading for Matakana.

Stand-out singer graces Ascension stage Three times Grammy nominee Toni Childs is set to thrill a lucky local audience with her signature husky vocals and emotive lyrics during an intimate indoor show at Ascension Wine Estate on December 2. Best known for her heavily R&B influenced Don’t Walk Away, Toni hit the big time in 1988 when her critically-acclaimed debut album Union went double platinum in NZ. The same year she was nominated for three Grammys, including Best New Artist. Her second album, House of Hope also went double

Ascension’s Darryl Soljan sasy Union has always been one of his favourite albums so when he was presented with the opportunity to host her show, he didn’t hesitate. Highlife returns to Country Park The Highlife NYE Experience will return to the Matakana Country Park on December 31. Highlife’s Adam Bennett says the festival has been reformulated with an all new set-up, layout and design. “The event will be marketed as a boutique festival targeted towards a mature audience and tickets will be limited to create an intimate festival environment with a quality crowd.” It will feature five areas of music accompanied by an array of themed party and chill-out areas. Adam says to expect an event of international festival standard employing the skills of some of the industry’s best, specialist production teams, music artists and event creators. A wide range of all music genres will be represented including funk, indie, house, hip-hop, r’nb, electro, live, jazz, breaks, nu disco, dub, world, drum and bass and more, served up by a titan line-up of international and local acts. “Safety, service and comfort are always paramount at any Highlife event and the NYE Experience will be no exception.” As well as music and live performances, there will be food stalls, warplane aerial acrobatic displays, interactive crowd initiatives and a heart pounding fireworks display to open 2012 with a bang. It is hard to imagine life, summer in particular, without this universal treat. The first frozen dessert is credited to Rome’s Emperor Nero. It was a mixture of snow, which he sent his slaves into the mountains to retrieve, and nectar, fruit pulp and honey. Another theory is that the 13th century adventurer Marco Polo brought with him to Europe, from the Far East, recipes for water ices, which were said to have been used in Asia for thousands of years. Italo Marchiony sold his homemade ice cream from a pushcart on Wall Street. He reduced his overheads, caused by customers breaking or wandering off with his serving glasses, by baking edible waffle cups with sloping sides and a flat bottom. His idea was patented in 1903. Today we are spoilt for choice. The advent of simple domestic machines means we can now make our own at home with the advantage of being in control of the ingredients.

This is the new novel by the author of the outstanding Let Me Sing You Gentle Songs. Marion is a Swedish doctor who lives on the west coast of New Zealand, somewhere south of Raglan. When she finds a small boy on the beach, she is surprised at the connection they form. As their friendship deepens, Marion thinks back to her childhood and all that has led to this lonely and isolated life. Once again, Olsson successfully intertwines New Zealand and Sweden to create a beautiful and compelling story.

From the acclaimed author of The English Patient is this new novel about a boy’s life-changing journey from Ceylon to England in the 1950s. Ondaatje himself made the same journey but he has stated that this is not autobiographical. The main character, Michael, is only 11 when he boards a ship bound for England. His family has sent him to live with his mother, who he has not seen for a long-time. He is travelling unaccompanied, as are two other young boys and they are left to discover all the secrets and stories of both the ship and its passengers. At mealtimes, Michael is placed at the Cat’s Table which is the table of least importance. As the journey progresses, he soon realises that the people he shares a table with have many interesting stories to tell. The story is told from Michael’s his life as an adult.

Wellsford welcomes back country show After several years in recess, the Wellsford Country Show is back at Centennial Park on November 19, brighter and better than ever. Co-organiser Lynette Gubb says the focus of the show will be on celebrating Wellsford and the district. The emphasis is on local people, local businesses and community groups. “We want the whole community to come together and have a great time. It has been a few years since the last show so we want to come back with a bang.” Visitors can look forward to free entertainment, locally-produced food and wine, animal shows, and trade exhibits. The show changed from an A&P show to a country show in 2008, which Lynette says allows the day to

run more freely with less rules and regulations in the animal section. She says the show was cancelled because of the recession and the fact that some of the main organisers had other priorities. “The closure of Irwins was a blow to the local economy, when many workers got laid off. But it’s time to move on and the show is one way for Wellsford to celebrate all the positive things there are about the town and the district. The show will bring a great atmosphere into the town.” Gates open at 9am, with entertainment starting from 9.30am. Tickets: Children under five are free, $4 for children five to 14yrs, adults $8, family pass $20 – includes two adults and up to three children.

Children will be well catered for at this month’s Wellsford Country Show.

Wellsford Country Show Saturday 19th November 2011, 9am – 4pm Centennial Park, Wellsford – A Fun Day Out For The Whole Family – • Craft stalls and trade sites

Hot tips on fire safety at show Members of the Wellsford Volunteer fire service will be promoting fire safety in the home at the Wellsford Country Show on November 19. Volunteer firemen Trent Jones says they will be concentrating on smoke alarms and safe cooking. “Around 25 percent of all house fires start in the kitchen and alcohol is involved in half of all fatal fires,” he says. “The message is ‘don’t drink and fry’, and have a fire extinguisher and/ or fire blanket in your kitchen.”

Trent says in 80 percent of the fires attended, smoke alarms are either not installed or not working. “The biggest problem is homeowners not testing their batteries regularly – they need to be done at least once a year. We will be advising people at the show the best way to look after their smoke alarms, as well as their families, over the summer holiday period.” Trent says the brigade is also hoping to have a Jaws of Life demonstration.

Experienced hand takes charge of animals After participating in A&P and country shows for more than 30 years, it makes sense that Karen Woolley is helping to organise the animal section of the Wellsford Show. Karen says the first show she entered was the Wellsford A&P when she was a child and her passion for showing beef cattle has grown ever since. “I was given a pedigree Friesian calf named Lisa to show,” she says. “I won the calf club section and for the next 20 years I worked with Friesians; showing, grooming and breaking them in before I moved on to Salers.” My husband Bruce and I are members of the Salers Society of New Zealand. Karen says preparing animals for a show is hard work, but she enjoys the challenge and takes a lot of pride in seeing her animals looking their best. “We’re up at 2am to get the animals ready and to the show on time. I am lucky that I have the help and support of my whole family.” Karen says showing animals is a bit of a family tradition – her parents Sheryl and David Pacey were regular A&P show supporters. About six of Karen’s Salers will be on display at the Wellsford Country Show including three-month-old Lilly, who will be lead by her son Scott.

Saler breeder Karen Woolley, with 13-year-old Sundance, who has won numerous ribbons at A&P shows in Northland.

Karen’s pride and joy Sundance may also get an outing. “She is 13 years old and weighs 980kgs. I have taken her to a number of events and she has won a majority of the ribbons I have, including supreme animal at the Whangarei A&P Show last year. But she is getting older and the travel is getting hard on her.” Karen puts the gradual decline in the number of participants in the animal section down to the economic times and the fact that many farmers are getting older with fewer young farmers to replace them. “Participating in the shows is like being a part of a community. I try to encourage as many children as I can to get involved and stay enthusiastic.”

Categories in the beef section are ‘highland’ and ‘any other beef breed’. There will be a youth section for under 18 year olds, and a calf and lamb club for children. “I’d also like to run a goat section if we have enough interest. “My main focus for the day will be to make sure everyone has a great time; we have ribbons for the winners and will provide morning tea and lunch for all participants.” Albertland Pony Club will host the equestrian section, which will be an In-hand Hack and Pony and Miniature Show. Info: Karen 423 9361 or equestrian enquiries, Leanne Woolley 431 4146.

Dodgeball for all

It has been a busy month for the group. With summer on its way, people are looking to be more active, and opportunities to get out and engage in family fun activities abound. By popular demand we are running another social dodgeball competition, at Warkworth Primary School, on Wednesdays from 3.30pm to 5pm. This is such a riotously fun event, and you don’t need to know how to play to enjoy it. It’s suitable for everyone from four to 94 (well, some nonagenarians are still pretty spry and we’re certainly not ageist). We finish each session with a sausage sizzle so come and give the newest sporting craze a go. The competition will continue through until November 16. The Kowhai Festival and Golden Oldies Rugby Tournament provided the Collective with opportunities to inform the community about our activities and to learn about the planned Warkworth Showgrounds Reserve Development. Feedback was universally supportive, especially in regard to the inclusion of the former Atlas site to extend the land available for sportsground development, as well as the proposed multi-purpose centre and adjacent aquatic centre. Curious passers-by were intrigued by the latest draft development plan which was on display, and showed great interest and enthusiasm for the conceptual drawings of how the multi-purpose centre might look. Much eager discussion ensued and many added their names to a growing list of Friends of MCSR to be kept informed and to offer feedback on future proposed developments. To the best of my knowledge this is the third major push in 30 years for the progression of the Warkworth Showgrounds as the major sports hub for the district. This time we have gained good traction with Council. Over the past two years, we have forged firm relationships with key Council staff, and a dedicated liaison officer has been appointed to facilitate our discussions and to keep us abreast of Council processes. Former exponents of the previous fundraising efforts towards the same objective have offered to again become involved, along with a few new volunteers. However, we are still looking for more community support, even if it is only to offer a few hours a year at one of our community events, or a skill that might be useful such as legal or auditing expertise. If you would like to become involved in this exciting project, contact Ruth on 422 9762, mahusport@gmail.com or visit our website www.sportsground.co.nz/mahusport

New fishing services for mobile phones The Ministry of Fisheries has launched two new mobile phone services to aid recreational fishers when out on the water. The new services, which are free, deliver important fishing regulation information such as catch limits or fish size limits to both standard mobile phones and smartphones, 24 hours a day. Those with standard mobile phones can text the species they are

fishing for to 9889; they will receive a reply with the relevant rules for that species. Fishers can also join a register to receive regular updates such as temporary closures. To join, text ‘Register’ to 9889. MAF is still providing a phone-in service for fishing information which can be accessed by calling 0800 4 POACHER (0800 476 224). The former 0800 4 RULES number has been discontinued.

Targa Rally cars make Wellsford pit stop Dozens of cars participating in the ultimate road race, Targa NZ, stopped for a vehicle-servicing break at Centennial Park Wellsford on October 25. This is the first year the rally has ventured north of the Harbour Bridge. First to roll in were the Targa touring cars, featuring historic, sports and special interest cars. These vehicles follow the same route as the competitors, but do it for the experience. Around 100 competitors arrived in Wellsford via Highway 16 and West Coast Road. They then headed to Kaiwaka and lunch at Marsden Cove. The southern stage of the rally took the cars to Takanini, Taupo and Palmerston North. Altogether, competitors covered more than 2000kms of the North Island and finished in Hastings on October 30. Top right, Brad (left) and father Graeme Cockerill, drivers of the 001 Safety Car, had a problem with their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III brakes – after a quick fix they ready to get back on the road. Middle, this 1960s AC Shelby Cobra was part Targa Touring cars. Bottom, Ron Stroeven of Auckland with his Nissan GT-R during the 20-minute service break at Centennial Park in Wellsford.

Sports briefs Fish for dinner? For anyone fancying fish for dinner on November 4 and 5, the Rathe Family Trust land, between The Diner and the Omaha Causeway, will be the place to be. An estimated 300-plus fishermen, competing in the Short Line Out Fishing Tournament, will be bringing home their catches for auction at 5.30pm on both days. The tournament is raising money for The Rugby Foundation and the Mahurangi Rugby Club, and is sponsored by Hynds Pipes. Organiser Sam Ryburn says ticket sales are going well with Shamus the Entertainer doing the MC work this year. “Shamus has worked with the All Blacks and the Black caps before and is sure to have the crowd entertained for hours,” he says.
