Welcome... to Sting in the Tale’s 9th Annual Festival This 2012 programme presents a magical mixed bag of delightful storytelling events. This year we bring storytellers and stories together from across the globe, our storytellers will tell tales deep from our past, explore myths & legends, re-tell fairytales, show us other cultures and most important of all, pass on to a new generation all those delightful human stories passed down by our ancestors. Storytelling is timeless and ageless and so our events are suitable for all adults however young the age guideline starts. There are a couple of special events just for adults, make a date to hear some of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales retold by the New Forest Storyellers and Durweston Mysteries by Tim Laycock. Our popular story walks are also back this year, exploring hidden Wimborne and Poole. We are pleased this year to have two brand new commissions drawing artists from different artforms together to bring you Viva Quixote and La Fille et les Chaussures (The Girl and the Shoes). The Girl who Became a Boy With Jo Blake Cave and the Glow Globes Fairytale castles and kings have lapsed into a brutal tribal existence prompting a courageous girl to hack off her hair and join the fighters on the frontier. Enter a world where horses talk and girls slay monsters. Jo conjures a vivid landscape where modernity and the ancient world collide, interwoven with seductive gypsyfolk music from The Glow Globes. The Storytellers from Don Quixote will also welcome you with an exert from their show. Age:

Illustrations by Maia Fjord
Maia Fjord has just completed her first year of a BA (Hons) Illustration degree at The Arts University College Bournemouth. Stories have played an important part in her life from a young age, and are one of the main reasons she decided to become an illustrator. Love for the written word started when she read Tove Jansson’s Moomin books as a child. Jansson’s illustrations continue to inspire her and have influenced her approach to illustrating the brochure for the Sting in the Tale festival, for which Maia has attempted to create textures with simple black lines, and keep the images interesting by experimenting with scale and composition. Maia enjoys working with high levels of detail and combining different forms of media and often explores the human character through portraiture and observational studies. She is fascinated with animals as well as people, and they regularly become the subject of her work. Maia has been experimenting with heightened levels of colour, and combining this with other processes such as printmaking and airbrushing. Maia was born in Denmark and moved to England at the age of eight. She regularly visits family there and is fluent in Danish. After graduating university, Maia hopes to have a career in illustration. This piece draws on the timeless classics of The Red Shoes, The Wizard of Oz and Cinderella. This is a collaboration between Hazel Evans, visual artist and Michele O’Brien storyteller. How the Sun was made, Platypus the Peace Keeper ... and other stories With Taprisha Come and see Taprisha telling beautiful creation myths from around the world. Join Sri Lanka born Debbie as she weaves tales to make your mouth water, your hearts remember and your bellies shake with laughter. Sing songs, try hand dancing and learn the ‘baila’ dance as you are transported around the world, from the Pearl of the Indian Ocean to the slopes of Mount Fuji with stories from near and far. Age:
