The nightmare words look alike. The letter t (and sometimes r) surrounding the letter combination ough in slightly different arrangements

2.

The letter combination ough makes a different sound. Ough is unpredictable

The spellings of the words are very similar. They all contain the letter combination ough but the vowel sound of each of the words can be different from each other.

Through 

Ex) Go through a door

Also: Throughout

Through is the only one of the words that starts with t.h.r.

We have a ‘thr’ + a long vowel sound (‘oo’)

Often confused with throw – threw

thr sounds like three and throw

Though 

Ex) The sun was shining though it wasn’t that warm (=in spite of the fact that…)

Though is made up of th + a short vowel sound (‘oh’)

Thorough 

Ex) Planners need a thorough understanding of the subject (=done with great care and completeness)

Through and though are pronounced with one syllable but thorough has two ‘th ru’. It sounds like the word borough

Thought 

Ex) I thought this was the end but it’s not (=past tense of think)

Thought is made up of th + a long vowel sound (‘ort’)

It’s like though with a t at the end
