ASSIGNMENT 2. ARCHITECTURE DEFINING THE FIGURE ELEMENTS IN A FIELD/GROUP

The intuitively and rule-based design process from Assignment 1 resulted in the fundamental design idea for Assignment 2: Architecture defining the figure elements in a field/group. The rule-based mosaic organizational scheme functions as the base for the pleasure garden, allowing to create structures either elevated, depressed or on the ground. The main idea for this specific pleasure garden was to create a space resembling a camp site with the possibility of overnight stay as well as offering communal facilities. It is inspired by the igloo pavilions found in northern countries which has glass roofs designed specifically for watching the northern lights. The scheme from Assignment 1 defined the shape of the structures which resulted in structures of various autonomous forms, mostly square or rectangular. The idea is that visitors may book a room and be able to look at the night sky, an idea which is enabled by the clear glass roof. The garden is set in the northern part of Norway and is enabled to be a functional campsite all year round. During the winter, the black timber cladding will stand out greatly covered and surrounded in the snow, and the glass roofs allow visitors to look up at the northern lights dancing across the sky. During the summer, the trees on the campsite gets its leaves back and a warmer climate. Now, the visitors can look up at the sky and see the midnight sun, which never sets but simply touches the horizon before returning to the sky. It is a multifunctional space suited for all seasons and all kinds of weather. As this camp site pleasure garden is to give peace and a sense of serenity to its visitors, it is important that it is in correlation with nature. Trees and various vegetation has been set in place to create this effect. The material will be black timber cladding and the structures will have large glass windows. All the windows and doors are in different shapes and sizes to enhance the aim for individuality. All the structures are one storey each to allow the trees to grow past the buildings, making the buildings more ‘one with nature’.
