Building over pre-existing constructions, inception upon built, and reusing historic buildings are crucial controversial subjects the contemporary architecture is constantly reflecting on striving to find convincing answer to the open questions arising from the debates.
The restoration of existing and historic buildings involves reflecting on the boundaries and the legitimacy of the architecture to address these challenges, on how it is possible to achieve remarkable results in these fields and the feasibility to devise an alternative valid method to the conventional building.
Eduardo Souto de Moura carried out two extensive restoration works on iconic historic buildings showing extremely coherent choices: the Mosteiro Santa Maria do Bouro and the Convento das Bernardas (2006- 2013). This is a first attempt to develop a new practical and effective approach to be adopted in an extremely consolidated and historical context.
