University of Maine President Paul Ferguson

aul W. Ferguson became the 19th president of the University of Maine in July 2011. A Southern California native, President Ferguson is a Whittier College graduate who earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology at the University of California, Davis in 1981. He is an accomplished health scientist with a 30-year record of scholarship as an award-winning professor in the fields of toxicology and public health. President Ferguson rose through the academic ranks, leading research and outreach efforts in four states to assess and reduce potential health risks from chemical exposures. During this time, Dr. Ferguson also worked as a senior toxicologist for Unocal Corporation, a Los Angeles-based international energy resources company. Since 1993, Dr. Ferguson has progressed through academic administration, initially serving as vice provost and dean of graduate studies and research at the University of Louisiana, Monroe. At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he was vice president for research and graduate studies. Prior to joining the University of Maine, Dr. Ferguson was at the Edwardsville campus of Southern Illinois University, where he was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. As a campus leader highly regarded for his commitment to engagement, inclusivity and quality, President Ferguson has a demonstrated record of university transformations in the areas of increased research and economic development, university-community partnerships, student success, faculty development and academic quality. Currently, President Ferguson is leading an inclusive, campuswide planning and implementation process, the Blue Sky Project, to elevate the University of Maine to new levels of excellence as the most distinctively community-engaged and student centered of the American research universities.

Director of Athletics Karlton Creech

arlton Creech began his tenure as director of athletics at the University of Maine on Feb. 10, 2014. Creech comes to Maine after serving as senior associate director of athletics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC). He brings 10 years of senior athletics administration experience to UMaine. Since 2012, Creech had been UNC’s senior associate director of athletics, serving as chief of staff and overseeing the department’s capital projects, human resources and facilities. From 2004–2012, he was associate executive director for UNC’s Educational Foundation Inc., where he managed capital projects (including coordination of the $88 million football stadium expansion), the Annual Fund, marketing, fundraising and ticket sales programs, as well as donor stewardship and development. He also worked for the Student-Aid Association at North Carolina State University from 2001–2004, coordinating ticket sales and fundraising. Creech, a native of Chapel Hill, received a bachelor of arts degree in political science from North Carolina State University as will complete his master of arts degree in management and leadership from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., in 2014.

Outstanding support for student-athletes Athletic training/ strength and conditioning Top-rate medical staff The Maine sports medicine team includes six certified athletic trainers and one graduate assistant certified athletic trainer, a team physician, an orthopedic physician, a wide variety of medical specialists and studentathletic trainers. Other specialists on the Maine athletic healthcare team include an optometrist, chiropractor and dentist.

The women’s basketball team raised $10,255 for its annual Play4Kay Breast Cancer awareness fundraiser game. Since the $10k goal was met, Coach Barron lived up to his word, having his head shaved. Community involvement: Student-athletes do not just receive tremendous

support. They also return the support to the local community. Events that studentathletes took part in last season included Martin Luther King Diversity Day, Toys for Tots, Salvation Army Angel Tree, Operation Christmas Child and Play4Kay. They also volunteered numerous hours at both the Ronald McDonald House and the Old Town–Orono YMCA, Cub Tracks Triathlon, Warm Heads Warm Hearts, Skate with the Bears, Black Bear Mentors, Skating Strides and many more activities. Maine athletics donates thousands of dollars worth of tickets to nonprofits each year.

Mike Kessock Sports Medicine Center The Mike Kessock Sports Medicine Center in Memorial Gymnasium houses some of the newest technology in the field of sports medicine. The facility provides injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for student-athletes. Speed, strength and conditioning UMaine Speed, Strength and Conditioning is a performance-based program focused on achieving success in athletic events and maintaining an injury-free environment. Philosophy: Developing a mentally and physically challenging training environment that will allow athletes to maximize their ability; Increasing performance in athletic events; Decreasing the risk of injury through the teaching of progressive strength and power development exercises; Identifing dysfunctional movement patterns and correct the pattern. Fundamentals of an athlete: lower-body strength; lower-body power; core strength; ability to accelerate and decelerate; mobility; and balanced upper body (posterior/anterior). Intercollegiate Strength Center in the Latti Fitness Center The Intercollegiate Athletic Strength Center in the Latti Fitness Center serves as the home for all varsity teams. The Intercollegiate Center is entering its seventh year as home of the Black Bears. Black Bear Points of Pride Historic Achievements >> Maine has celebrated two NCAA championships in men’s ice hockey. Maine defeated Lake Superior State, 5–4, to capture the school’s first crown in 1993, and then knocked off New Hampshire, 3–2, to win the school’s second title in 1999. >> Every year since 1986, at least one Black Bear team or individual has competed in an NCAA Championship event. >> The Black Bear baseball team has made seven appearances in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Athletic success • UMaine has won two NCAA Division I National Championships in men’s ice hockey in addition to 18 NCAA appearances and 11 Frozen Four appearances. • Alfond Arena is recognized as the college hockey rink with the “Best Atmosphere” by the Wall Street Journal (2011). • Two Hobey Baker Award winners from UMaine (Scott Pellerin and Paul Kariya), are recognized as the top NCAA men’s ice hockey players. • 47 former Black Bears have played in the NHL. John Tortorella is head coach of the Vancouver Canucks. Garth Snow is general manager of the New York Islanders, while Jack Capuano is their head coach. • UMaine baseball has made seven College World Series appearances and 16 NCAA regional appearances. Baseball has won seven conference titles, including the 2011 championship. • UMaine baseball has had seven major league players in addition to coaches Brian Butterfield and Carl “Stump” Merrill. • UMaine women’s basketball has won 13 conference titles and made seven NCAA Tournament appearances. Four AllAmericans have combined for 14 All-American honors.

• UMaine football has won 11 conference titles and made six NCAA Tournament appearances, including three NCAA Final Eight appearances in the last 11 years. UMaine played in the 1965 Tangerine Bowl. • UMaine football has had 50 players in NFL camps. There are currently eight players listed on NFL rosters. UMaine football has produced 36 All-Americans (2013). • Three Black Bears have played in the Super Bowl. • UMaine softball has won three conference titles and made UMaine’s first NCAA appearance by a women’s team in 1994. • Former UMaine men’s basketball player Rick Carlisle led the Dallas Mavericks to a 2011 NBA Championship win, while Jim Boylan is an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers. • UMaine field hockey received its highest national ranking ever in 2011 when it was ranked 10th in the nation. • Track and field great Viktoria Rybalko competed in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. • UMaine track has garnered five All-America honors in the last three years.

Lynn Coutts enters her third season at the helm of her alma mater. In year two for Coutts she continued to return to the program to a higher level after announcing another large, highly skilled recruiting class and developing a pair of AllConference selections in Jean Stevens and EmJ Fogel. Coutts’ second season was highlighted with non-conference wins over Quinnipiac and Rhode Island before knocking off Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member Boston College.

In her first year at Maine, Coach Coutts guided the Black Bears back to the America East Championships. Coach Coutts also worked to develop a pair of student-athletes into All-Conference second team selections while also developing a freshmen duo into All-Rookie team members. Coutts also guided the Black Bears to big non-conference wins over Cal-State Fullerton, Long Beach State and Hofstra.

team went from 11-33 to 32-17 and the North Atlantic Conference Champions in 1994. Following her time as an assistant with the Black Bears, Coutts coached at Franklin High School from 1997-99. She was also the head coach for Orono High School in 1987. Coutts has been committed to high school softball as she served as President of the Maine High School Softball Coaches Association from 2010-11. Coutts shined as a player for the Black Bears as she was a member of the Black Bear pitching staff from 1983-87. Coutts led the team to the 1987 ECAC Championship and also captained the Black Bears from 1985-87. At the time of her graduation, Coutts held the school-records for most innings pitched in a season (183), and career (544.3), most strikeouts in a season (152), and career (318), and most victories in a season (18) and career (41). She was named a Northeast All-American in 1987 and was inducted into the University of Maine Hall of Fame in 1993. Coach Coutts and her husband, former UMaine Associate Head Baseball Coach and current softball assistant Mike Coutts, have two children, Jackson 15 and Maggie 11.

Lynn Hearty Coutts was a four-year letterwinner for the Black Bears from 1983-1987, earning All-America honors in 1987. In addition, she served as an assistant coach for the Black Bears from 1990-1994 and is a member of the UMaine sports hall of fame. “We are delighted to have Lynn back at UMaine,” said Abbott. “She is a tremendous leader and an excellent teacher. She has a great vision for how to build on the success of this program. Lynn loves softball and she loves UMaine -- we just couldn’t have a better fit for our program.” “I would like to thank President Paul Ferguson, Athletic Director Steve Abbott and the University of Maine for the opportunity to lead the Black Bear softball program,” said Coutts. “Steve’s enthusiasm for UMaine softball is infectious and I am thrilled to join his efforts in creating a presence in America East as well as around the state. I’m eager to begin building a lasting relationship with the student athletes, the University community and all the fans in our state. I can’t wait to get started!” Coutts comes to Maine with 20 years of softball teaching and coaching experience, as she has had her hand in a variety of softball operations. Coutts has owned and operated the Frozen Ropes Training Center in southern Maine since 1997, where she is responsible for developing pitching and hitting curriculum for individual and clinic settings. At the training center, Coutts also recruits and trains softball instructors, hosts coaching clinics for Maine ASA and high school coaches and assists in overseeing the budget. Aside from running the Frozen Ropes Training Center, Coutts has directed the Maine Thunder softball travel teams, recruiting players and coaches for seven teams while also training both players and coaches. Coutts became the head coach of the Maine Thunder 18U College Showcase Team in 2008. Coutts guided the Thunder to a fourth place showing in 2008 in the Eastern National ASA Tournament. Under her guidance with the Thunder, Coutts placed six of her student-athletes with Division I programs in the past four years. Coutts has also kept her ties close with the Maine program over the past few years as she was a pitching consultant for the Black Bears in 2007-08. During that year, Coutts spent two days a week designing and organizing specific workouts for the Maine pitching staff. Coutts traveled with the team to Florida and Hawaii, working closely with the pitching staffs in all aspects of their game including conditioning, mechanics and mentalities. From 1990-1994, Coutts was an assistant coach with the Black Bears. She worked closely with the Maine pitching staff. The Black Bears improved dramatically in Coutts’ years as an assistant as the

Mike Coutts enters his second year as assistant coach with the University of Maine softball program. Coutts will work with players in all aspects while focusing in on hitting technique. In his first year with the Black Bears, Coutts helped all-conference junior Jean Stevens develop into the America East leader with 13 home runs and tied for the league-lead with 38 RBI. Fellow all-conference selection EmJ Fogel also showed high-skill with the bat as she hit a team-leading .305. University of Maine softball head coach Lynn Coutts announced on Sept. 25, 2012, the hiring of Mike Coutts as assistant coach. Mike Coutts, a former Black Bear baseball team member and assistant Black Bear baseball coach, will focus on working closely with the hitters, infielders and the catchers. Coutts brings with him a wealth of knowledge on the diamond as he spent the 1987-97 seasons as an associate/ assistant baseball coach under the great John Winkin at the University of Maine. During his time assisting at Maine, Coutts helped lead the Black Bears to NCAA Regional Appearances in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1993 while coaching 10 future Major League Baseball professionals.

At one point, Coutts’ Deering squad was ranked as the #50 program in the United States. Most recently, Coutts was the head coach at Scarborough High School in Scarborough, Maine. While at the helm, Coutts led the team to a Western Maine Championship in 2012. Since 1997, Coutts has operated the Frozen Ropes Baseball & Softball Training Center in Portland Maine where he has conducted numerous coaching clinics as well as offering one-on-one training in all areas of the game. Coutts also co-authored “Organization of Indoor Baseball Practice” while producing a video by the same title. Coutts graduated from the University of Maine in 1982 with a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education before earning his Master of Education/Administration in 1989, also from the University of Maine. Coutts and his wife, head coach Lynn Coutts, are the parents of two children: 15-year-old son Jackson and 11-yearold daughter Maggie.

Coutts spent four seasons as a member of the Black Bear baseball team from 1978-81. In 1981, as the team captain, Coutts helped lead the squad to a College World Series appearance. Coutts was named to the Northeast Regional First Team in 1980-81; an All-New England First Team selection in 1981; a Cape Cod Summer League All-Star in 1980 and a Yankee Conference First Team selection from 1979-81. From 1995-2002, Coutts was the head coach of the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Summer Baseball League. While with the Kettleers, Coutts led the team to a pair of league championships in 1995 and 1999. Following the 1995 season, Coutts was named 1995 Cape Cod Coach of the Year. Coutts coached professionals Chase Utley, Garrett Atkins and Mitch Stetter all while they were with the Kettleers. Following his time in the Cape League, Coutts held head coaching stints in the Alaska Collegiate Baseball League and the New England Collegiate Baseball League. From 2009-10, Coutts was the head baseball coach at Deering High School in Portland, Maine. While at Deering, Coutts led the team to the 2009 State Championship and a perfect 22-0 record after racking up 50-consecutive victories.

3 Named after Mike Kessock, a 1966 graduate of the University of Maine. 3 In the Fall of 2006, Kessock Field underwent several renovations as provided by Alan Joseph. The renovations included an additional 450 seats that were added behind home plate and down the rightfield line behind the visitor’s dugout; and an enclosed brick press box. 3 The total seating capacity is 950. 3 The grandstand was donated by Kathryn Slott in her parents’ names. Slott also purchased the banner which is located on the outfield fence which highlights the conference titles and NCAA berths in school history. 3 The dimensions of the field are 200 feet down the left and right field lines, and 220 feet to straight-away center. The playing surface is natural grass.
