COVER ARTIST: N.C. WYETH

N.C. painting at Eight Bells in Port Clyde, not far from the harbor. Photo was taken by an unknown photographer in 1936, and the painting shown is now owned by the Farnsworth.

“How I teem to paint that wonderful water and shore next summer!” Wyeth wrote, “We must dig deep for the loftiness, the majesty, the sublimity of that wonderful shore.”

N.C. Wyeth painted “The Harbor at Herring Gut” during the late summer of 1925. Herring Gut is an early name for the fishing village of Port Clyde, Maine, where N.C. Wyeth and his family spent summers. From 1920 on, this mid-coast area became a second home for N.C., his wife and five children—many of whom were to become artists themselves. The youngest, Andrew Wyeth, was to paint the famous “Christina’s World” in nearby Cushing, and grandson, Jamie, continues to paint Maine today.

The painting, “The Harbor at Herring Gut,” offers a rare bird’s eye view of the fishing village close to N.C.’s studio. Painted shortly after his mother’s death (August 1925), the painting represents a new and intentional progression of the artist’s style reflecting a major change in his life. The bold and gestural strokes bringing life and high drama to N.C.’s illustrations have been transformed. Meticulous brushwork brings a bright light that falls over the foreground with the same intensity extending to the horizon. This illuminates strange perspectives such as the wooden structures that look ready to topple into the water. In the center of the composition, a man rowing a dory is given the same focus as smaller boats behind him, and the viewer is left to infer that they are farther away in the harbor that tips toward us instead of receding into the distance. The flattened forms show an influence of folk art rarely seen in other examples of N.C.’s work. “The Harbor at Herring Gut” is now owned by the artist’s daughter-in-law, Betsy James Wyeth, Andrew’s widow. Mrs. Wyeth frequently loans artwork from her collection to the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland. 20

Join us as we celebrate our 20th anniversary 25

Welcome!

This is our 20th anniversary edition and Maine’s 200th anniversary. Please join in to help us celebrate! It has been a wonderful 20 year experience, criss-crossing our beautiful state to meet artists and visit galleries to represent in our annual guide to Maine art. Suzanne and I would like to thank both our readers and our wonderful advertisers for helping make the Maine Gallery + Studio Guide the essential reference guide that it has become. We are honored to represent an amazing art community of emerging and established artists and fine art galleries. It is our pleasure to provide you with a guide that will lead you to wonderful discoveries while touring Maine. Our digest size is portable and will travel nicely in your glove compartment. The 2020 cover image is a rarely seen and quite stunning N.C. Wyeth painting, “The Harbor at Herring Gut.” Special thanks go to Karen Baumgartner at the Brandywine River Museum of Art for her assistance and reprint permission. The spirit of art is 200 years strong in Maine. The State of Maine and art have had a deep and abiding relationship. From the beginning, the earliest landscape artists and luminists made paintings of Maine that captivated imaginations and drew visitors and “rusticators.” The finest artists in the country have been drawn to Maine ever since. We have added new features, “Maine art, off the beaten path,” and “Maine art, a little history.” There are also many photos in our pages to help introduce you to the actual artists, gallery owners and directors. We hope you have the oportunity to meet as many as possible, and perhaps, take home a new piece of art that you have a new-found connection with. You are now free to tour Maine, a state of unequaled beauty and celebrated art. We are honored to be your road map and personal guide.

SOUTH COAST + PORTLAND

Discover Maine Art A Little History On September 16, 1928, a group of artists and friends met at the Perkins Cove Studio of painter Charles Woodbury to organize an art group that would exhibit fine art and provide educational programs in Ogunquit. The Ogunquit Art Association has played a central role in the vibrant cultural life of the southern Maine seacoast since then. Founded to bring together professional artists to exhibit their work to the public and to provide an educational forum, the OAA continues to afford artists the opportunity to display their finest work.

In 1958, a group of individuals led by actor Jack Smart came together and founded the Barn Gallery. Woodbury, a Charter/Board of Directors member of the Guild of Boston Artists, advised the new group to follow the format that had made the Guild a success. The OAA continues to organize and present exhibitions, programs and its famous Annual OAA Art Auction on August 1, at Barn Gallery on the corner of Shore Road & Bourne Lane.

Discover Maine Art A little history Portland’s Old Port art scene flourished colorfully in the 1960’s and 1970’s. A new generation of young artists, many local and many from away, rediscovered the beauty and affordability of the waterfront district, which had been virtually abandoned since World War II. With few public funds and a lot of sweat equity, artists helped turn the Old Port into a functioning art center with record shops, candle shops, studios, and galleries. - William David Barry “The Roots of the Modern: Maine Art Scenes, 1945–1979”

“Charlie Hewitt: Left of the Turnpike,” was an exhibition of Hewitt’s dynamic, imaginative paintings, sculpture, prints, and neon constructions. Hewitt’s connection to Lewiston, Maine is the inspiration for the exhibition’s title, which highlights the influence of the mill-working community on Hewitt’s work. Here Charlie is flanked by artist Jeff Loxtercamp and a visiting art lover at Cove St. Arts in Portland. photo - A. Anderson

Discover Maine Art, a little history The Maine Art Gallery was founded in 1954 by Wiscasset resident Mildred Burrage. In her search for a building with abundant natural light, she found the Old Academy Building which was in need of renovation – just her expertise! In 1981 the State of Maine honored her with its Historic Preservation Commission Award. As an artist trained in America and France, Burrage was officially recognized many times for her work as a cultural benefactor. She was the first Maine woman to receive the National Achievement Award given by the National Association of University Women.

Discover Maine Art off the beaten path The Joseph A. Fiore Art Center at Rolling Acres Farm in Jefferson is a program of Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) that actively connects the creative worlds of farming, conservation and the arts. The purpose of the Fiore Art Center is to stimulate and advance the dialogue between human and environment. They hope to instill passion for preservation through the arts, create awareness and build community. They also do this through exhibitions and public educational events, through research and application of ecologically sustainable farming practices and by hosting residencies for artists on a historic farm.

Discover Maine Art, off the beaten path Monhegan Island is a small rocky island ten miles from the nearest shore and scarcely a square mile in size. It is accessible only by boat and there are no cars or paved roads. It is also the very heart of Maine art. This is the Rope House on the Monhegan main drag, which is the local bulletin board for artists studios and open hours. Daytrips to Monhegan make fantastic memories with ferries leaving Port Clyde, New Harbor and Boothbay Harbor. Watch artists paint, smell the salty flotsam, listen to the calling gulls, see the bees buzzing in the wild flowers. Time stands still.

Discover Maine Art off the beaten path The South Solon Meeting House was built in 1842 as a place for religious and community activities. In the 1950s, the nearby Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture held juried competitions to select artists to paint large frescos on the meeting house walls. Today, free and always open to the public, the South Solon Meeting House is a rare find, even in Maine. Located on South Solon Road and Meetinghouse Road, Solon, Maine. www.southsolonmeetinghouse.org

Gallery artist Hub White, seen here with Turtle Gallery director Elena Kubler, is an architect/ artist and Professor Emeritus at the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois. His oil pastel on paper “Tragedy of Notre Dame de Paris,” is a reaction to the tragic fire last August. The Turtle Gallery presents works by Hub White and an exceptional group of sculptors, artists and fine crafters at the lovely 1876 Centennial House in Deer Isle. photo - A.Anderson

The Gallery at Somes Sound commands attention due to it’s unique location at the head of Somes Sound in Somesville. Discover Maine Art off the beaten path

In 2009, the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium was founded by local sculptor Jesse Salisbury of Steuben. The mission of SISS was to hold international stone sculpture symposia in downeast Maine that engages individuals and communities in public art, resulting in a large public art collection in Eastern Maine. This piece “Dialog” was created by Roland Mayer of Germany in 2009 and sits in Lamoine State Park. Four symposia followed in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014. Today the Maine Sculpture Tour is an outdoor exhibit of 34 sculptures spanning over 273 miles along the coastal region of Downeast Maine.

Discover Maine Art: a little history

In 2010, the Tides Institute & Museum of Art in Eastport undertook the pioneering exhibition “The 70’s: Art & Place at Passamaquoddy Bay, Maine.” This impressive show and catalogue focused on the individual artists who created a remarkable art scene. One uniquely a part of downeast Maine in the 1970s.

catalogue cover photograph by Jane Ehrlich

Today, Tides Institute & Museum of Art, under the direction of Hugh French and Kristin McKinlay, has many initiatives and programs, wide ranging collections, education and preservation efforts that strengthen the region’s economic prosperity, vitality and wider connections.

Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Peninsula in Maine is the only part of the park that is located on the mainland. Because of this “less traveled” aspect, there are many who are passionate about the region. This is “Ravens Nest,” one of many special vistas on the Park Loop Road. Nearby Winter Harbor is a historic summer colony with the exceptional Littlefield Gallery and colorful studio whopaints of Wendilee Heath O’Brien. photo - A. Anderson 173

Corinne McIntyre in her Ocean Point Studio with one of her landscape paintings. photo - Jenny Bennett

Corinne McIntyre and the Plein Air Painters of Maine By Jenny Bennett It all began at an exhibition opening in 2009. Corinne McIntyre and some friends were enjoying the art when one of them said, “We all paint by ourselves, but why don’t we go out every Wednesday and paint together?” And so the Plein Air Painters of Maine was born. The group was not unique. Plein Air Painters of America (dubbed “The Original Society of Outdoor Artists”) was established in California in 1986. But, as far as the friends knew, this was a new concept in Maine. The very next week the four artists gathered at Grimes Cove, East Boothbay, and set up their easels to paint. Little did they know they were spawning a movement. A decade later the Plein Air Painters of Maine include more than 600 like-minded artists who paint outside together in 10 chapters statewide. 178

There has been a Great Paint Out in Maine every year since 2009, always at Grimes Cove, Ocean Point. Participants come from all over to paint outdoors and share their artistic visions. In 2019, artists participated in a day-long event on Sept. 4. Corinne McIntyre poses with most of the group (at center, wearing the white brimmed hat). photo - Robert Mitchell The early driving force behind the group was McIntyre, a professional artist from Massachusetts who first came to Maine on her honeymoon, staying in a cottage overlooking Grimes Cove on Ocean Point in East Boothbay. She and her husband, Fred, returned to the area for vacations for several more years, all the while looking for a place to buy. One day when they were visiting East Boothbay, Fred took a detour on his way to buy a newspaper and spotted a “For Sale” sign on a wooded stretch of road leading away from Ocean Point. “He came racing back to tell me,” remembered McIntyre, “but I wanted to be on the ocean not inland.” They went away to think about it and the inevitable happened. “We bought it as an investment until something else came up, something on the water,” she said. “But, of course, I soon realized that for year-round living, being on the ocean maybe wasn’t as practical. There’s the taxes for starters, and when the winter storms come in we’re a lot safer up here.” Within months they had built a house, buying a post-and-beam kit from a company in Kittery, Maine, and doing most of the work themselves. Fred was hired as water superintendent for the town of East Boothbay and Corinne continued to work as a freelance technical illustrator and graphic designer. But fine art and the ocean called her and she slowly phased herself out of the design business. “It was always my dream,” she said, “to be a full-time artist and have my own gallery. We opened the doors to Ocean Point Studio 27 years ago and I’m still here. I love it more than ever.” 179

The gallery stands alongside the McIntyre home barely one tenth of a mile from Shore Road, which snakes along the Ocean Point coastline. The modest space is bathed in natural light and the walls are hung with McIntyre’s oil paintings, mostly impressionistic landscapes painted outdoors on-site, many along the ocean. “Just going out there, on the rocks, looking at something, becoming so involved, focused… you lose all sense of time. If there’s anything bothering you (not that I have anything bothering me!), it just fades away. I think it’s the same for people who sail,” she said, “that feeling you get, being one with nature. For me it’s truly magical… heaven on earth.” Throughout the summer McIntyre goes down to the shore to paint at least three times a week, mostly early in the morning. In the winter, too, she goes outside from time to time. No matter the season, though, she paints every day. “Even if it’s just for an hour or so. Painting is always there; it’s a part of me. Even at night, if I’m bored, I’ll put on C-Span and sketch the people—I’ll mute the sound and just sketch their faces.” Her preferred medium is oil, her preferred venue outdoors.

“There are no rules and no fees,” said McIntyre. “But the benefits are far-reaching: we learn from one another, discover different places to paint, learn about exhibitions and other events, and form long-lasting friendships.”

Typically, she works alone but she joins the Mid Coast Chapter of Plein Air Painters of Maine most Wednesdays. Since its original conception the organization has fanned out across the state. Its members are artists who like to paint outside and who enjoy the camaraderie of other like-minded painters. Joining a chapter is simple. “When painters find out about it,” said McIntyre, “they contact the Member Caregiver and she adds them to the membership list. It’s as simple as that.” Members receive a weekly email telling them where and when the 10 chapters plan to meet in the coming week. Any member can join any group to paint in company. “There are no rules and no fees,” said McIntyre. “But the benefits are far-reaching: we learn from one another, discover different places to paint, learn about exhibitions and other events, and form long-lasting friendships.” For most of the group’s 10 years McIntyre was the “Member Caregiver,” handling membership and the calendar, posting blogs and the weekly announcement. But a couple of years ago she passed the baton to artist Fran Scannell. “I only like to paint here and so the group rarely, if ever, went anywhere else,” she confided. “Occasionally they’d go off somewhere and I just wouldn’t go… it made me feel guilty.” One of Corinne’s lasting legacies for the Maine group is involvement in the Oil 180

Painters of America’s Great Paint Out. These events occur throughout the fall across the nation. In 2009 McIntyre applied to host for the state of Maine. She has organized a Maine event every year since, always around Labor Day and always at Grimes Cove. Most of the artists who participate are from Maine—Boothbay, Searsport, Brooklin, Bristol—but others come from farther away, drawn by the company and the setting: the cove, its headlands and the islands beyond. “They come together just to be outside and to paint for a day. It’s a wonderful thing,” said McIntyre. The weather can be unpredictable but, rain or shine, the artists always find something to paint. Many come every year, others just once, having seen the announcement on the Oil Painters of America website. They come to paint and to visit with new and old friends, to chat and create, create and chat. Some deliberately set up next to a companion, others stay separate. Newcomer or old-timer, they all speak of Corinne McIntyre with great affection. “She’s amazing,” said Fran Scannell, “She’s been painting all her life. She just never stops. And she does everything—all her own framing, computer graphics, printmaking, everything. It just amazes me and I love her dearly. Everybody loves her.” McIntyre for her part, while she enjoys painting alone, also delights in the people she meets through her art. “They come from all over the world, they stay for a while, they leave happy,” she said. “I’m a lucky woman.” Author Jenny Bennett lives with her daughter in Southport, Maine. Ocean Point Studio is at 130 Van Horn Road, East Boothbay, and is open most afternoons, year-round.
