COVER ARTIST: BOB THOMPSON
Colby Musuem of Art presented “Bob Thompson: This House Is Mine” from July 20, 2021 to January 9, 2022. “This House Is Mine” traces the artist’s brief but prolific transatlantic career, examining his formal inventiveness and his engagement with universal themes of collectivity, bearing witness, struggle, and justice. Over a mere eight years, he grappled with the exclusionary Western canon, developing a lexicon of enigmatic forms that he threaded through his work.
Thompson (1937–1966) had a knack for keeping everyone on the edge of their seats. Throughout the exhibition, it becomes clear that he moved fast, that in the moment, most could not keep up. After leaving Louisville University in 1958, he was relentless, finishing over 1,000 paintings before passing on at the age of 28.
Thompson settled in New York City, where he joined fellow artists Allan Kaprow and Red Grooms in some of their first so-called “Happenings,” multimedia performance events. A devotee of jazz, Thompson frequented downtown clubs such as Slugs’ Saloon and the Five Spot Café, where legendary performers including Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and Charlie Haden played. These musicians materialize in many of Thompson’s paintings and drawings including “Ornette” (Birmingham Museum of Art, 1960–61) and “Garden of Music” (Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, 1960). This pivotal period was marked by Thompson’s first solo New York City exhibition, and within the next few years his work entered some of the pre-eminent modern art collections in the United States.
The cover art, “The Judgement of Paris,” is a story from Greek mythology, which was one of the events that led up to the Trojan War. Eris, the goddess of discord, was not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. In revenge, Eris brought a golden apple, inscribed, “To the fairest one,” which she threw into the wedding. Three goddesses, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, agreed to have Paris of Troy choose the fairest one. Paris chose Aphrodite, because she bribed him by giving him the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta, wife of Menelaus. Paris carried Helen off to Troy, and the Greeks invaded Troy for Helen’s return.

Welcome to the Tour of Maine Art 2023!
If you love art, then this is the perfect summer companion for you. We invite readers and visitors to discover exceptional Maine art while touring “Vacationland.”
This is the most exciting, culturally rich, and inspiring time of our year, where we celebrate art in all its forms. This tour will take you on a colorful journey across our beautiful state and will introduce you to iconic galleries that showcase local artists of renown. Keep this guide handy!
Summer openings can be enjoyable affairs to attend, especially when they spill out into the evening air. Interesting art, interesting conversations, summer colors, and lots of good hors d’oeuvres and wine. Opening receptions take place regularly in galleries and studios all along the coast of Maine. Visit our blog, Café des Artistes, to see what’s happening near you and make plans to see upcoming shows, and attend openings and exhibitions. Check-in with Maine Gallery Guide online to view these pages on your mobile devices and plan your route.
Connecting with Maine artwork happens on many levels. Meeting and speaking with established gallerists can often offer a much deeper understanding and awareness of the art presented. Meeting artists in their studio can be an intimate and memorable affair. However you choose to experience Maine, we hope our guide helps you discover the visual splendor captured by the many artists and craftspeople of this beautiful state.
We have a new section in this year’s guide devoted to Maine studio artists. The Studio Artists section on pages 144-149, located near the Advertisers Index, highlights some of the smaller studios that are open to the public. It is well worth a side trip to vist these hidden gems!
With The Maine Gallery + Studio Guide in hand, you are now ready to explore the beauty of Maine art. We hope our guide will help you create unforgettable art adventures and assist you in bringing home a lovely lasting memory that adds beauty, value and style to your home.

John Wilkinson was born in the UK and currently resides in Thomaston. His sculptures can be profound, whimsical, and clever. The figures can be isolated and isolating, but also united. Collectively they seem to represent the ups and downs of life, even hinting at something more spiritual.
“Most of my work is modeled or assembled using materials that are readily shaped by hand―clay, plaster, cement and cement-based compounds, paper, cardboard, wire, hardware cloth, epoxy.”

Daniel Minter is an American artist known for his work in the mediums of painting and assemblage. His overall body of work often deals with themes of displacement and diaspora, ordinary/extraordinary Blackness, and spirituality in the Afro-Atlantic world. Here Daniel poses with two of his paintings at a solo exhibition at Dowling Walsh Gallery in Rockland last summer.
The book “The Tapestries of Morris David Dorenfeld: Paintings in Fiber,” was just released this spring. Here author Christopher Brewer Williamson (on the left) and art consultant Ron Crusan see it for the first time. The book, published by Custom Museum Publishing, is available at Amazon and Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop with nine locations.

SUMMER/FALL EXHIBITION 2023
Since the advent of photography in the nineteenth century, artists have used the camera to look at— and to look with—the human subjects in their midst. This interest in bodies in public and private space has only increased in recent decades. Featuring more than 120 photographs by more than four dozen leading contemporary artists, this exhibition explores the phenomenon of “people watching” as a recreational activity, an act of surveillance, a type of harassment, a sign of empathy, and a documentary form of expression.
