The Funken

Statement

Can a fair act as a dynamic, public center of thinking, information and broadcasting for relevant conversations about design? The project Funken transforms the entrance pavilion of Design Miami into a programmatic hub by constructing a platform that will serve as a world forum of continuous leading design-related events. The pavilion is formed by a large-scale pentagonal mirror structure that meets the ground at one of its vertex. It is supported by two external cranes that allows it to rotate as well as open or close. The structure holds the lighting and sound devices required for events. A curtain ring assures acoustic performance and wind protection. The Funken works in a multiple manner: With its intensely open and free programming it attracts the public and the press arriving to Miami Art Week while directly interacting with general visitors; with its formal configuration and movement, it controls shade and temperature, with its mirror surface it serves as a visual attractor making the events it hosts visible from far away.

Public Attractor

System of cranes opening and closing the pavilion in order to make visible its content

The Funken opens, closes and rotates. It shines and reflects its surroundings and visitors. It protects them from the sun, from the wind. Its interior and the stories it hosts could be seen from far away. It acts as a carnivorous plant, seducing the audience to approach, participate and gently leads them to Design Miami’s tents

The Funken

Program

Program 5 days, 21 events 23 Funken’s variations WHAT IS DESIGN? The pavilion Funken builds a conceptual bridge between Art and Design through its architecture and programmatic content. The collection of events that it hosts could be described by a triple agenda: it develops a living research about the limits of design inviting leading experts, designers, artists and architects to participate in the conversation; it expands the activity of the fair from its interior to its exterior, acting as an pole of attraction for the general public, as well as for visitors to the adjacent Art Miami and the rest of the venues functioning during the Miami Design Week. Finally, it takes advantage of Design Miami’s privileged concentration of international curators, specialized press, collectors and artists to foster an intense pedagogical and open public program.
