Putting Music in its Place A musical tour of 16th century Galway using GPS and smartphone technology Part of the Galway Early Music Festival, May 17-20, 2012 Spanish merchant Captain Moreno has arrived in Galway, a town he knows well and loves, with a shipment of wine. He takes his shipmate (that’s you) on a tour of this lively town. Along the way you will hear the type of music appropriate to where you are.
What you need • Free Wifi access in city centre. (Suggestions: House Hotel, Museum Cafe) and full battery! • An iPhone or an Android phone and earphones • 7scenes app (NOT 7scenes pro) – free download • GPS and internet enabled and active connection with 3G or a WiFi network (make sure it doesn’t have any restrictions). • Set your phone so that it won’t go to sleep too quickly. (iphone = general settings/auto lock – android = settings/display/screentime

Sign In
Open 7scenes app. You’ll find yourself on the public map You are asked for your current location. Tap Accept. Tap Info button in the top right corner. Tap Log in in the bottom right corner. Register your own or use the Galway Early Music log in details: Username: GEMF Password: GEMF2012 • After signing in you will be brought back to the public map Open the GEMF Musical Tour • Tap Scenes at bottom of screen. In the top menu tap Nearby. You will see the GEMF Musical Tour Scene. Tap the icon. • You will first see a general intro • Tap Start at the top-right. (If you’re not signed in yet, or if you are too far away from the Scene, this button will say ‘Info’)

• You will be asked if you wish to download all media for the tour. Tap Download. Do this in a city centre free Wifi area. • Once the tour begins you will first be directed to the Intro. Here you will learn more about the tour. Under the tab ‘Instructions’ you will find more guidance about how to use the tour.
Now you are ready to start walking! • Start your walk outside of the Museum. • Tap Places at the bottom of the screen. This will show you the map, with all the points of the tour marked on it. (You can use the printed map on the reverse to see your route through town. • As you walk, you will see yourself moving on the map in real-time. Move close to a place to automatically activate it. You should feel a buzz when you get near a tour stop. • GPS can be wayward, though. If you are at a stop and the phone doesn’t buzz, just tap the flag on the map. • A window will appear with a picture of that location in medieval times. A 'Play' icon on the picture will indicate that you can play audio at this spot. Tap to play the audio. • Information about the music is on the screen. If it is hidden by the image, you can close the image window to read this information. Some of the performers will appear live during the Festival.
