We have launched a program that defines a new approach to HSE culture, aimed at a general empowerment of HSE awareness within the Maire Tecnimont Group: Safethink HSE Awareness Program. This is a multi-stakeholder approach which combined a number of initiatives all sharing the same goal. After rolling out Safethink, our Group is committed to reinforcing this culture each year through an ever-deepening HSE humanization program that gets all employees and stakeholders personally involved, and ensures that the new HSE vision is adopted by each of us in every single activity.
Here is an overview of the Safethink HSE Awareness Program in 2021:
HSE COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN
Communication campaigns for HSE & Social Accountability issues aimed at maximizing our safety culture and reinforcing our shared Safethink identity.
Engagement initiatives aimed at starting a humanization process on these issues, raising awareness and spreading the new HSE & SA vision in the Maire Tecnimont Group.
HSE CELEBRATION DAY
Celebration days to mark outstanding HSE performance during construction project execution. In 2021, HSE Celebration Days were held at the HAOR, PP5 and LUANDA Refinery Projects. A dual goal achieved by the Maire Tecnimont Group in HSE and Social Accountability, which improves the synergies between the various companies. During 2021, a third-party certification body carried out audits that confirmed the Group’s commitment to both our HSE and SA8000 management systems.
STOP & COACH PROGRAM
This innovative program is aimed at increasing Safety awareness by boosting the engagement and onboarding of our colleagues, clients and subcontractors through involving them in a participatory approach.
TRAINING TOOLS
Spread of information pills and training tools to increase awareness of procedures and best practices regarding HSE & SA8000 issues, both in the workplace and outside (safety moments, safety tips, etc.).
HSE & SA SOCIAL INITIATIVES
Social initiatives addressing HSE and SA8000 issues to promote the development of the local community, carrying out activities that our Group’s values.
SAFETHINK CARE
Safethink’s new ‘soul’ dedicated to unconventional/ emotional training for workers, which contributes to our macro-goal of humanizing HSE.
Stop & Coach Program
The Stop & Coach Program is a key part of achieving our HSE awareness goals, and is aimed at injury prevention. The program increases safety awareness of our Construction Team by promoting a participatory approach to managing the measures taken regarding activities not complying with our Safethink Rules for Life.
The innovative aspect of this programme is that it aims to not only correct behaviour, but ensure a high level of HSE awareness through a coaching process, promoting safe behaviour as part of employees’ value system, and not just through operational instructions.
Engaging workers belonging to a variety of cultures at Maire Tecnimont Group is one of our major challenges with this project, not only because of their different maturity on safety issues, but also because of the different ways in which different communities give and receive feedback. That’s why the project pays close attention to identifying tools that are versatile and transversal.
The initial phase of the Stop & Coach Program involved a series of kick-off meetings at the construction sites involved. After that tailored training courses were held for all construction site resources, Supervisors and Managers, aimed at providing the awareness and tools to ensure they approached their role correctly.
Following these training and mentoring activities, the Program was implemented in the field by using a “Stop & Coach Card”. This tool gives workers the authority to stop an unsafe action or situation and manage the coaching activity. The front side of the card features the ‘stop’ symbol; the back side contains a series of questions that support the coach during the session. The Stop & Coach Card is delivered inside a kit that also includes the Safety Observation Card, a useful tool for recording and following up on non-compliant situations. We also created ad hoc “Stop & Coach Guidelines”, describing the program in detail in all its phases, with the aim of providing instructions and useful tools for implementing the program at all Group construction sites. Finally, dedicated communication material was prepared and distributed to promote the content of the Program and strengthen the Group’s HSE awareness.

Maire Tecnimont celebrates World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2021: fourth edition of our HSE Workshop
Maire Tecnimont Group held the fourth edition of our two-day HSE workshop in 2021 on World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which is promoted by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
For the 2021 event, 160 colleagues including the Construction team (Site manager and Site HSE manager) and the Group’s top management took part, connected from the main offices and from 24 construction sites in 17 countries.
Our sites employ about 36,500 people, including Maire Tecnimont’s Construction team as well workers employed directly and indirectly. Seven of our top managers were present.
This year, the day focused on strategies to strengthen occupational safety and health (OSH) systems, drawing on past experience to improve our resilience to face current and future challenges. The HSE staff, in collaboration with Tecnimont and KT-Kinetics

Technology Construction Departments, organized the fourth HSE Workshop and provided specific branded materials (posters, banners, t-shirts, and polo shirts). The goal of the event was to share implemented best practices, look back on lessons learned from 2020, and talk about new goals and expectations for 2021.
During the two days, we featured a program dedicated to HSE on our corporate television channel, and we shared the event on social media so that external stakeholders could see how the health and safety of our people represents a core value for the group.
The pandemic has placed even more emphasis on the need to establish guidelines to ensure people’s safety and health. As safety is not only a priority for us but a core value, the workshop was a valuable opportunity to share best practices and strengthen our shared HSE identity – a litmus test showing that our “Safethink HSE Awareness Program” has already managed to implement and strengthen, a new shared health and safety culture in just a few years. The high levels of participation and involvement from all the construction sites showed how much the new HSE identity is shared and embedded in the Maire Tecnimont Group.
HSE CULTURE BY THE NUMBERS
Over the last three years, a total of more than 195 million man-hours were worked at the Maire Tecnimont Group’s hydrocarbons business unit construction sites.

By their nature, events categorised as LTIs(1) have a very low rate of occurrence, therefore, in order to value their trend over time it is necessary to embrace a much longer observation period than the single year; for this purpose, the IOGP, whose statistical data we use as a sector benchmark for HSE, has adopted a five-year rolling formula for the LTIR(2) indicator and our organization has made similar processing.

Analysis of the trends of the last few years confirms the Group’s commitment to excellence in injuries prevention. Our figures consistently remain well below the IOGP(3) benchmarks, and since 2015 the trend is decreasing, as one can immediately see in the above chart(4) .
In 2021, the Group reduced the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions for construction sites compared to the years 2020 and 2019 (pre-Covid), while for offices the figure is in line with that of 2020.
(1) Lost Time Injury (LTI) is the sum of fatalities and lost work day cases. (2) Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR) is the number of injuries including at least one day lost divided by the hours worked in a year times one million. The LTIR indicator takes into account fatalities and injuries with lost days. (3) 2021 data for IOGP is not available yet (as benchmark data will be published in second quarter 2022) and for this reason the Group will keep maintain the same 2020’s benchmark data also for year 2021. (4) The Hydrocarbons business unit includes the companies that deal with petrochemical and Oil & Gas activities. Since 2015 data includes Tecnimont Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Tecnimont S.p.A..

Multi-site Social Accountability Certification: a single SA8000 Management System at International level
Maire Tecnimont is the first Italian group, and the first in the world in the energy industry technology, engineering and construction sector, to certify a single social responsibility management system
at a multi-geographic level, confirming its commitment to the well-being of people in offices and on construction sites. The centralisation of the management system, an equally challenging target for a multinational with operations in 45 countries, was possible thanks to the presence of a core of shared values that translate into strategic choices and operational practices applied uniformly among the various companies of the Maire Tecnimont Group.
At the end of 2020, Maire Tecnimont Group
obtained multi-site certification in accordance with
the SA8000:2014 standard, and is committed to maintaining the certification through concrete actions.
This important milestone is the result of a path taken several years ago to spread and consolidate a culture of respect for human rights. In 2021, we added SA8000 corporate governance to the Group HSE&SA Function, Project Quality and Risk Management.
Respect for human rights is an essential element of Maire Tecnimont Group’s vision, and is one of the values underlying our actions in all the countries where we operate. The company therefore recognizes the diversity of the countries in which it is present, of its clients, suppliers and employees, and we consider each of them for their value as a strategic asset.
OUR COMMITMENT TO THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IS BASED ON 6 CORE ELEMENTS
TRAINING
We have invested heavily in training and internal communications in order to raise awareness and involve everyone in these issues, both employees and subcontractors, with the aim of making each person take active responsibility for their own personal well-being.
APPOINTMENT OF WORKERS’ REPRESENTATIVES IN SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY MATTERS
In order to facilitate workers’ liaison and communication with company management on matters relating to Social Accountability, a SA8000 Workers’ Representative(s) (RLSA8000) has been elected at each certified company in the Group.
SOCIAL PERFORMANCE TEAM (SPT) AND RISK ASSESSMENT
The SPT periodically conducts a written risk assessment of the requirements of the SA8000 standard to identify and prioritize current and potential areas of non-compliance with the standard and ensure that corrective and preventative actions are effectively implemented.
ACTIVE STAKEHOLDER LISTENING AND COMPLAINTS MANAGEMENT
A central aspect of our vision is to listen to the various internal and external stakeholders of the Group. For this reason, we have created a dedicated channel for all our internal and external stakeholders to send/receive complaints, which represents a direct way to collect ideas and suggestions aimed at improving daily working life.
SUPPLY CHAIN MONITORING
Maire Tecnimont Group makes all its suppliers/subcontractors aware of these issues so that they undertake to respecting human rights in their work. We are therefore constantly engaged in pre-qualifying our suppliers, contractors and partners, a process which sees hundreds of suppliers assessed each year on their performance, including human rights and social accountability issues. The promotion and protection of human rights in the supply chain is also managed through audits at our construction sites, including sub-contractors’ “leaving camps”.
COMMUNICATION, AWARENESS AND ENGAGEMENT
A fundamental aspect of the SA8000 Management System concerns staff communication and engagement. We are working to raise people’s awareness today and in the coming years. In the SA8000 context, dedicating focus and commitment to these matters does not only mean improving the well-being of employees, but the even more complex mission to transfer and share these requirements with all the companies that work with us, and this is our challenge for the future.

As an international Group, our governance mirrors our awareness that individual and cultural diversity greatly contributes to the creation of both tangible and intangible value. Our aim is to pursue sustainable success, and the creation of long-term value for the benefit of shareholders, taking into account the interests of other stakeholders relevant to the company.
Our stakeholders’ trust in us is based on the cornerstone of our strong ethical standards, the full compliance with laws and regulations, and the scrupulous and profitable management of our finances. Our Business Integrity Policy is an integral part of the measures that the Group has already adopted and implemented to prevent corruption, promoting transparency for the benefit of the Group’s reputation and performance.
2021 has been a very remarkable year, as our solid financial performance has further confirmed that Maire Tecnimont is on a stable growth trajectory. Revenues grew by 8.9% to €2.86 billion, EBITDA profitability was perfectly in line with the annual guidance at 6.1%, and Net Income increased by 48.5%.
2021 will also be remembered as the year when we had our highest ever order intake (€6.4 billion) and backlog (€9.5 billion). This extremely impressive performance is concrete evidence of the strength of the business drivers underlying our sector, as well as of the solid trust that our clients, recurrent and new, put on our Group.
In spite of our record year, our commercial activities keep on running at full speed, with over €63 billion worth of opportunities both in our traditional business and in Green Energy. The latter continues on its expansion path, with new technology-driven and EP and EPC projects started that will lead to additional ones in 2022 and beyond.
