ARCH-TECH Final Major Project Project type: co-working office space for tech start ups Location: 7 Curtain Road, Hackney, London EC2A 3LT In the modern day, tech start ups are able to run their business without a permanent office space, as the nature of their work is mostly portable. While this benefits the individual by reducing business costs, this new way of working could potentially have a negative impact on the augmentation of the industry; small scale business startups and individuals are less likely to interact and collaborate with one another. This project would benefit business of every scale, and in turn the tech industry, by providing the ideal conditions for individuals to work, collaborate, socialise and network with others in their field. A variety of formal and informal working areas have been incorporated into the design, including both isolated and open plan desk areas, audibly private meeting rooms, a board room and a transformable seminar/event space. In addition to this there are a number of facilities on site that will have a positive impact on health and wellbeing and promote communication, such as a public cafe, communal kitchen, private prayer/meditation room and a variety of informal break out spaces.

WORKING WELL RSA Competition Brief Project type: supported working office Location: 421-451 High Rd, Wood Green, London N22 8JD Research shows that those aged between 16-24 are affected the most by unemployment; a lack of qualifications, work experience and demand for work, as well as a history of extended periods of unemployment, are major contributing factors. Studies also show that unemployed people are far more likely to suffer with mental health issues than those that are employed. For this reason I am proposing a supported working environment where unemployed individuals interested in getting into the digital creative industry can come to be mentored in work by local businesses from Haringey and surrounding boroughs. The program aims to improve their mental wellness by not only helping integrate them into employment and the working environment, but the space will also be designed for improved mood and productivity. I am focussing on the London borough of Haringey, where some areas are considered to be among the most deprived 10% in the country - however, this is expected to change in coming years, especially with the Crossrail 2 improving connections with the city centre. It is anticipated that, similar to its southern neighbours (Camden, Islington and Hackney), Haringey will become an extension of the city centre. This project aims to provide the young individuals with the necessary skills to flourish when businesses come to the borough in years to come, putting them in the best position to find work and/or start their own businesses. They would be mentored by both business members on site, as well as business owners from the local area and neighbouring boroughs. The program will be supported by the local council to provide affordable workspaces for businesses to inhabit - residents will then ‘give back’ and support the community by mentoring the individuals in the scheme. Similar to projects such as POP Brixton and BOXPARK Shoreditch, the project is constructed primarily from recycled shipping containers for a cheap and quick method of construction that is sustainable. To further increase the sustainability of the building the design incorporates elements such as a green roof (for insulation and protection from direct sunlight/weathering, as well as adding to local plant life), photovoltaic cells, rainwater harvesting and maximised use of natural daylight to reduce energy needs. This project has been designed to be located above an existing car park for the TESCO express on High Road in Wood Green.

MOTHER LONDON Rehabilitation and Re-Use Project type: mixed use hotel and office Location: 10 Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, London, E2 7DD The brief for this project is to radically remodel an existing warehouse in Shoreditch, London. The interior must be redisigned to accommodate office space for Mother London as well as hotel accommodation, with an emphasis on sustainability and the successful integration of services and energy systems. It is important that the exisitng building facade is retained, and factors such as materiality, lighting, heating/cooling and ventilation, and internal circulation are carefully considered. Mother currently has offices in London, New York and Buenos Aires. They require office space for an additional 150 staff on their London premises, and access to a 24 hour refreshment space that is open to both members of staff and the general public. In addition to this the project design needs to incorporate hotel accommodation for at least 60 people, supporting the 24 hour ‘city-life’ setting. The design of this new joint work and leisure space must successfully respond to, and accommodate, the broad range of needs from different potential users (both public and private). In response to the brief the hotel and office spaces occupy opposite ends of the building, physically separated with a void running in between: the hotel is located to the north of the site, and the office to the south. Users of the two spaces can enjoy food and refreshments as well as a multitude of different activities (such as performances, exhibitions, seminars and presentations) on the third floor. Taking inspiration from the rich history of Shoreditch, and it’s being the location of the first permanent playhouses in the country, the edges of each floor are stepped back from the one directly below similar to the tiered seating arrangement in traditional theatres. It is at the bottom of the void where any of the afforementioned activies will take place, thus allowing office staff and hotel users on the upper levels to observe and interact with the activities happening below. A number of systems have been incorporated into the design to make the project sustainable. The central void increases the amount of daylight entering the building, reducing energy consumption and creating pleasant working environment. In addition to this photovoltaic cells and air source heat pumps are utilised to generate electricity and heat the building. The office space is ventilated passively using the stack effect, and climbing indoor plants have been placed in the south facing windows to provide solar shading for office workers. ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Market Factors (Architecture of Future Retail) Project type: mixed use retail and therapy space Location: 16-18 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9JL This is a design project for a dual use retail space within an existing form - a late Victorian building currently used by London Graphic Centre as their flagship store. This site not only provides new opportunities but also comes with constraints, such as being on a slight gradient and placed at a busy junction. The key focus of the project was to design for two different clients/audiences within the same space, which takes into consideration both business and social aspects: a flagship store for Alexander McQueen as the primary and commercial aspect, and a secondary aspect reflecting social responsibility (to take into consideration people who would normally be excluded from a high-end commercial retail environment). The focus of this brief was to raise awareness of important issues such as the social responsibility of architects and designers, and social responsibility as part of a brand strategy. The existing ground and first floors of the building had to be radically remodelled, along with a newly designed entrance/shop front. In response to the brief the space has been landscaped to create a multilevel design. A portion of the first floor has been removed to open up the space, with two large feature staircases located on opposite corners of the plan. A small extension has been added to the west side of the building, providing a level entrance to the store. Inspired by McQueen’s regular use of juxtaposition in his work, the existing building and it’s internal structure has been kept in its raw and exposed form with high quality finished materials used selectively elsewhere in the design. The clean and mininalist aesthetic has been chosen to take minimal attention from the products on display. McQueen products are more like pieces of art than clothing garments, and so the store has been designed to feel more like an art gallery than a retail environment, setting it apart from other McQueen stores and high end retail brands. Only one of each product is displayed in carefully composed outfits on mannequins located around the store, displayed like art installations that visitors can easily view. Due to the brand’s founder Alexander McQueen’s issues with depression and drug abuse (which sadly led to him taking his own life in Feb 2010) the secondary function within the design is a facility to provide therapy services for those with issues regarding anything from mental health to substance abuse. The private therapy rooms are camouflaged within the store under the staircases so that any customers seeking counselling feel as though they can do so in complete privacy.

ZEN BRIGHTON Urban Environments, Artefact and Element Project type: mixed use spa and gym Location: NCP Car Park, Russell Rd, Brighton BN1 2DX This project was focused on the design of an area of a city and its redevelopment, with particular emphasis on urban issues - from historical decline and urban-decay, to perceived need of renewal and regeneration, to the maintenance of socio-historical and cultural continuity. Comprised of two phases, this project began with a group based research and design proposal for the site in order to produce an urban design strategy and framework for the renewal and regeneration of the site. This was followed with the individual design proposal for a section within the group proposal. The site for the project was a modernist brick and concrete multi-storey car park situated just behind the Grand Hotel, Brighton. The existing structure of the building had to be retained and re-used. The brief required that 50% of the group proposal accommodate commercial activities, and the other 50% be used for housing - the proposal should facilitate activities for the current and future community, and improve the range of ammenities for the area. As a group, we proposed the removal of certain floorplates from the existing car park (in order to achieve more usable heights in the spaces) and extended upwards. The overal design scheme was nine storeys tall, with the top four floors dedicated to residential accommodation, and lower floors a mix of retail and leisure. Each floorplate had a different shape along the north side, and the building featured a central full height atrium.
LAC E
For the individual phase of the project I focussed on the design of the spa and gym spaces situated on the first floor. Continuing with the theme from the group proposal, the materiality is fairly industrial: mainly concrete, glass and steel. Accents of living greenery are present in the design in the form of trees, green walls and hanging/ suspended plants, in order to soften the appearance of the other materials and add colour to the spaces. Concrete in it’s polished form has been used for the majority of the floor surfaces, and textured cast concrete used to detail/accent certain walls.

The gym and spa are located at different sides of the building. The regeneration of the existing car park from the group proposal meant that the new floor plates for the lower levels of the building are split across two levels and have double height ceilings. These features of the building meant that a series of interesting and different spacial RUSS ELL S QUAR E environments could be created over a series of levels.
CY S QUA
RE
The spa area is zoned into three spaces, with each catering for a different type of treatement: smaller therapies (such as manicures, pedicures, facialREGand eyebrow ENC Y RO AD waxing, threading, bleaching and tinting, etc), water based therapies (such as a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms) and more personal treatment therapies (such as massage, body treatments, facials, body waxing, etc). The gym has been designed primarily as an open plan space, as it doesn’t require the same level of privatisation as the spa. Within the gym there is a class space, changing areas, a joint area for the purpose of cardio and weight related exercises, and space to do free body exercises and stretches. ST M ARG RUSSEL

THE VILLAGE UNDERGROUND Dual-Use Environment Project type: mixed use restaurant and gallery Location: 54 Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, Hackney, London, EC2A 3P This design unit focussed upon the issues faced when designing a single building with multiple uses. The brief required a design for a combined restuarant and gallery, where the needs of the two functions are met throught the manipulation and organisation of space. Part creative community, part arts venue, the Village Underground is a nonprofit space for creativity and culture in the heart of East London. The main Village Underground centre is housed in a renovated turn-of-the-century warehouse primed for everything from concerts and club nights to exhibitions, theatre, live art and other performances. The site is an old warehouse in Shoreditch, currently ‘The Village Underground’ event space. The brief required the space to be transformed into an addition to Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant chain and should provide seating for approx. 15-20 tables. The brief required the design to explore the relationship between the storing, cooking and preparation of food served at the restaurant - and how this would work alongside a gallery function within the same building. Inspired by the history of Shoreditch the project was designed with the theatre in mind. For the ‘gallery’ function within the design will mostly come from diners and gallery visitors observing the art of gastronomy. For this to happen the kitchen is located in the middle of the plan, with stepped levels of seating. Gallery visitors can view the kitchen from a mezzanine floor. In addition to the kitchen, gallery viewers can view an art installation on the mezzanine floor from food related artists such as Diego Cusano.
