Potential Magazine Covers

Page 1

These are some potential photos for my college magazine front cover. I especially like this one as it is a midshot photo of two typical college students in an artistic area that is still part of the college. They are both smiling which entices the reader as it makes the magazine seem genuine and shows that college life is something to smile about! In this picture, Flick is also holding a coffee; it’s a typical element of student life that people can relate to easily. This picture also has sufficient space around it for a masthead and cover lines.

! I !also like this picture of Flick as it’s ! a clear medium close up of a ! typical smiling student. It was ! also taken at the college; the image is directly relevant to the ! content ! of the magazine. There is ! sufficient space for both a !masthead and cover lines, but the! proximity of the image means that there are very clear ! guidelines for each element that ! !can’t be altered easily. It would ! be easy to convert into a

magazine cover and has lots of potential to be unique.

This photo shows a different dynamic of college life, as it is of a group of people, as opposed to a single student. For this reason I think it would give off a good impression for my magazine as it promotes unity and friendship. There is also sufficient space for a large masthead, however there’s no room for cover lines, and photo isn’t composed perfectly. The spacing between the students is varied which makes the image look unprofessional.

! !This photo is a well-composed image ! and fits well into the rule of ! thirds, which makes it easy to compose other elements around ! it. !It is of a typical college student in everyday clothes which ! ensures that the magazine image ! isn’t too pretentious or irrelevant. ! However, it’s quite a plain ! photograph with not many ! dimensions with regards to facial ! expression and pose. For this ! reason I don’t think the photo ! would make a very unique or memorable magazine front cover.

I think this photo has potential to be a good college magazine cover. It is a well-composed image; there is enough space at the top for a masthead, and down the left hand side to place cover lines without them obscuring the main subject of the image. I also like the fact that this image isn’t too serious. Flick has adopted a more relaxed and playful pose, but the picture still looks professional. I think this would appeal to students because it gives off the impression that the magazine isn't too pretentious.

This ! photo is another example of students ! being together in a group. Although I still think the idea of a ! group ! dynamic is a good angle to adopt ! on a magazine cover, most well-renowned magazines generally ! use! medium close-ups for a more professional look. There is space for ! a masthead above the main image ! subject, ! but no obvious space for cover ! lines which could be difficult ! to adapt. Also, the image composition looks quite ! unprofessional as the car park and ! building is visible, so a different ! background would have to be used.

I like this image of Flick as she is smiling and looks really happy. There is space around her for cover lines and above for a masthead, but the background would have to be adapted or changed as there is a sign in the corner that makes it look unprofessional. There is also the difficulty that the image looks offcentre as one of her arms takes up more of the photograph than the other, and I think this looks unbalanced. Although I like this photo, I don’t think the pose is casual enough for a college magazine.

! !

I think this is a really nice photo of Sophie as it’s candid and you can see the genuine happiness on her face. I also like the background as it’s artistic but still recognisable to students as part of the college. The only difficulty with this image is the fact that it was taken landscape. To use this on a portrait magazine cover it would have to be cropped, and the majority of the background would have to be cut out. There would also be no space for a masthead or cover lines.
