SUCCESSFUL IMAGES These are some photos I’ve extracted from my shoot for the purpose of featuring on my double page spread. This document is to help me decide which image will be most fitting and appropriate for use on a DPS for my particular article. I want to use a long-shot to show variety in my images and give myself more options when designing the article itself.
I like my model’s overall look in this photo, and the outfit looks casual yet smart. It would also be easy and effective to warp the text around her body shape. The main problem with using it for my double page spread is that it’s quite similar to that of the front cover. The model has the same facial expression as in the other image, her hair has fallen in the same style and it was taken in a similar location. For these reasons I don’t think I’d be able to use it in the same magazine, as it wouldn’t show enough variation. ! !
! Although this image is very similar to the last one and therefore possesses the same advantages and disadvantages, there are some distinct features that make it different. The first being the model’s stance. Character is shown through a more animated stance, which I think is important for a double page spread. The front cover image is supposed to be artistic and enticing so potential buyers will initially want to read the magazine, however the double page spread article is a chance to show the artist’s true personality. By using an image where the artist is smiling, it makes the article feel more approachable and friendly.
This image looks more candid and relaxed. I like this element as it shows the true personality of my artist and really conforms to the ‘indie’ portion of the indie-rock magazine. The colours are lovely as the photo was taken whilst the sun was setting, but I dislike the way the light hits the model’s face. It’s slightly yellow which would be difficult to adjust and the high exposure means there is too little detail. For this reason I don’t believe I could use this particular image on a DPS article unless it was converted to black and white.

This image is unique and would be fun to work with. Because the camera was facing towards the light, a shadow has fallen over the model which gives a mysterious and alternative style to the photo. I also like the way the sun is shining on her hair because it adds a warm colour glow to the image. The model has refrained from using direct gaze in this image which shows personality of sorts, as we can see that she’s daydreaming or looking off wistfully into the distance. This is a strong potential image for my double page spread article.
I absolutely love the power in this image. My model looks fierce and strong, which shows personality beyond the front cover image. This photograph definitely appeals more to the ‘rock’ part of the genre chosen which would consolidate the magazine nicely, being as the front cover image is more ‘indie’ styled. The only thing I’d be worried about with this particular image is whether it would be too contrasting to the rest of the magazine. It’s quite a different style to that of the front and I’d have to find a specific link to bring each part together. !

Finally, I like this image again as it represents my artist in a strong but feminine light; she completely dominates the photo which is perfect for the fact that my magazine is predominantly aimed at females. I would easily be able to warp text around her body effectively, but I would have to change the background. I dislike the location of this shot as the image contains cars and bins that have been carelessly left in the shot. I could, however, cut the model lout and place her on a new background in Photoshop.
