The Cathedral

A

The sublime pinnacle of twelfth and thirteenth century art, Notre-Dame Cathedral symbolises the power of the bishops of Chartres and the fervour of its population in the Middle Ages. Built and decorated between 1134 and 1260, now ▲ The Cathedral by night registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it is the most complete and wellpreserved example of gothic Cathedrals. After the fire of 1194, which destroyed the edifice, leaving only the crypt and part of the western facade intact, it took just thirty years for the hard-working teams of some 300 workmen to rebuild the cathedral. The main facade of the cathedral (west) has kept the Royal Portal and its large bays from the twelfth century together with the south steeple (right: 103 m) and the lower parts of the north tower. The rose window dates from the thirteenth century, whereas the new flamboyant style steeple (left: 112 m) was built in the sixteenth century. These two steeples – one of which is accessible to visitors from the inside – capture our attention from the plain and continue to guide pilgrims today. The three portals of the Cathedral – to the west, the Royal Portal (11451170), to the north, the so-called Alliance Portal (1220-1230) and to the south, the so-called Church portal (1220-1230) – allow the visitor to admire the precision and delicacy of the work of the sculptors of Chartres, achieving near-perfection in their details. The scenes portrayed reflect contemporary Christian thought. ▲ The nave They acted as “pictorial catechism”. On the Royal Portal, you will observe the delicacy of the Virgin and Child (right-hand bay) and the purity of the face of Christ in majesty (central bay). On the left-hand bay, the works of each month offer a vision of daily life in the twelfth century.

2

The Cathedral Once inside the cathedral, you will be surprised by its proportions, some of the most impressive of French cathedrals: 130.20 m long, a 16.40 m wide and 37.50 m high nave, the scale of the chancel and the transept (64 m wide). As you move closer to the chancel that has kept its finely chiselled Renaissance railings, you will walk over the black stones of the labyrinth. A piece of the famous relic called the “Virgin Mary’s veil” is exhibited in the “Saint-Cœur de ▲ The west facade Marie” chapel (absidal chapel). Beneath the cathedral, the largest crypt in France is open to visitors (access from the outside). As a place of pilgrimage and meditation, a cathedral of light and a stone bible, Chartres is a unique introduction to the art and expression of Western Christendom between the twelfth and thirteenth century. ▲ Notre-Dame Cathedral, view from the lower town

THE PILGRIMAGES E a c h y e a r, t h e c a t h e d r a l welcomes thousands pilgrims who come to venerate Our Lady of Chartres. Throughout the year, pilgrims from F r e n c h a s w e l l a s ▲ The royal portal (tympanum) f o r e i g n (including Japanese) dioceses and parishes visit the cathedral. These pilgrimages are at times quite colourful, such as the annual mass in Tamil. Chartres is especially popular among student pilgrims. In the spring, thousands of believers and non-believers set off on Charles Péguy’s footprint. The pilgrimage to Our Lady of Christianity the Monday of Pentecost also attracts a large crowd.

THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS Radiantly colourful, exceptionally expressive, there are 172 stained glass windows, covering a total 2,600 sq. m. They make up the finest collection in Europe in terms of their age and beauty. A genuine picture ▲ 13 century stainedglass window book, they illustrate the bible, the life of the saints and bear the imprint of their donors, the heraldic arms of great families or work scenes representing the guilds. They are the work of master stained glass makers in the twelfth and thirteenth century. The most ancient stained glass windows, famous for their particular blue colour, date from the twelfth century. In Chartres, the blue colour is omnipresent, but it’s especially the blue of “Notre-Dame-de-la-Belle-Verrière” that attracts visitors from around the world. This radiant blue was arrived at by colouring the pâte-de-verre with cobalt oxide. Later, other, less expensive pigments would replace this ▲ “Notre-Dame de la Belle Verrière” 12th-century blue, known as stained-glass window “Chartres blue”. th

THE LABYRINTH Chartres Cathedral possesses a magnificent example of a church labyrinth. It is found on the floor of the nave and dates from sometime around 1200. At certain times during the year, you can still see it as it was in the 13th century; it has never been the object of restoration ▲ The labyrinth work. The labyrinth is circular in form and made up of flagstones from the quarries in Berchères enclosed by bands of black marble. The 261.5 m long pilgrimage path was walked by Middle Age pilgrims in prayer, thereby representing a symbolic pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Very close to the Cathedral, on the Place de la Poissonnerie, stands one of the finest houses in Chartres, the Maison du Saumon S . This building, decorated with wooden sculptures, was built in the early sixteenth century. The Maison du Saumon will offer, from this summer, exhibition and prestigious events. Below, the Rue des Ecuyers, lined with half-timbered houses, including one flanked by the Reine Berthe staircase (sixteenth century) P , paved and lit with suspended chain lanterns, takes visitors back to the Middle Ages. On the other side of the Cathedral, at n° 29 rue Chantault, is the oldest house in Chartres dating back to the twelfth century. Ramps and staircases (called “tertres”) take you down to the lower town with its street names reminiscent of the old medieval trades of Chartres. The Tertre Saint-Nicolas was the passage once used by water carriers. Humpback bridges, washhouses, watermills are the main features along the banks of the Eure. From here, you have an exceptional view of the upper town. Arts and Crafts Watchmakers, stained glass makers, upholsterers, picture framers, wrought iron workers, sculptors, mosaic artists, calligraphy and illumination artist and potters make the city and its surroundings lively throughout the year.

THE ART OF STAINED GLASS Born in the Middle Ages, the art of stained glass has elected Chartres its capital. The cathedral and churches in Chartres are home to a large number of old and contemporary stained glass windows. Today, the art of stained glass window making is still very much alive, thanks to the many studios that restore old stained glass windows and design works for public buildings and private residences. Nowadays, master glass artists continue to innovate and use new tools and procedures (fusing, thermoforming or serigraphy...). Some of these studios are open to visitors to reveal the secrets of stained glass window making (see page 33). There is also the “Centre International du Vitrail”, which offers a diverse, dynamic view of the art and techniques of stainedglass window-making (see page 9). Finally, the “Galerie du Vitrail”, a genuine stained glass antique dealer’s, offers an in-depth discovery of the art, through the exhibition and sale of old and contemporary stained glass works along with a specialised bookshop ▲ 13 century (see page 41), which is unique in France (more than 400 listed stained glass titles). th

The great region of Chartres is packed with a variety of fine rural products. You will find an abundance of producers whose know-how will enchanted the agro tourism lovers, without mentioning the Chartres special pâté, the great bread, fine chocolates, macaroons…. prepared with passion. If you are staying in Chartres, do not miss the food market, which takes on Wednesday and Saturday mornings Place Billard. CHARTRES PATE Famous since the 18th century, Chartres Pâté is a pastry in the form of a pie filled essentially with game meat. Originally, it was made using plovers and dotterels, birds that would pass over Chartres during their migrations. When these birds disappeared, partridges and pheasants were used instead.

POULE AU POT Henry IV is reputed to have declared, "If God allows me to live, I will make sure that there is not a single labourer in my kingdom who does not have the means to enjoy a boiled chicken on Sundays." The poule au pot, or "boiled chicken", eaten by peasant families became popularly associated with the reign of Henry of Navarre, the only king to be have been crowned in Chartres Cathedral, on 27 February 1594. In memory of this event, certain restaurants in Chartres include a poule au pot on their menus, especially during the "Henry IV Weekend" (21st - 22nd February).

THE MACAROON Originally invented in Venice during the Renaissance, the macaroon can now be found throughout France. Made from a paste of ground almonds, sugar and egg whites, this delicious, round biscuit can be filled with various flavours. Chartres' pastry chefs have developed, through extensive research and tests, a recipe for making this dessert soft and tender.

THE MENTCHIKOFF A sweet made of fine praline chocolate covered with Swiss meringue was created in 1893 at the time of the Franco-Russian Alliance. Today, many of Chartres' confectioners continue to make this delicacy, much to the delight of gourmets with a sweet tooth.

THE RETRODOR®, 1st TRADITIONNAL FRENCH BAGUETTE This traditional baguette - made from flour without any additives, the result of subtly blending the best Beauce wheat - has a light, fluffy middle with irregularly-shaped holes and a golden crust. Famous throughout France, this baguette is also appreciated abroad.

20

Local delicacies THE COCHELIN A puff pastry in the form of a man - which is sometimes filled with chocolate, raspberry or marzipan - the cochelin was originally prepared at New Year's.

L’EURELIENNE Produced in Eure-et-Loir, this beer is brewed and bottled on a family farm less than 6 miles from the city of Chartres. Raw materials are selected and blended with raw cereals from the farm, then processed and packed.

THE LEMONADE “LA BEAUCERONNE” The Lemonade “La Beauceronne” was created in 1888 by Fernand SAVOURE. Five generations later, Stanislas SAVOURE decides to reintroduce this ancient recipe of lemonade, with the ingredients of water from the region of la Beauce and sugar beets from the sugar refinery of Artenay..

THE SABLE DE BEAUCE Made exclusively with Beauce and Eure-et-Loir wheat, the “Sablé de Beauce” shortbread is based on a traditional recipe. Made with a generous dollop of churned butter beaten in with fresh eggs from the Beauce region, it's 100% natural (no additives). This delicious, little wheat biscuit doesn't crumble and keeps perfectly.

THE ROSÉ WINE OF CHARTRES AND THE VINEYARD OF SAINT BRICE. In april 2003, a little vineyard of 500 wine plants were created on a hill in Saint Brice, a southern district of Chartres. The 25th of September 2006, the first harvest of blue-shaded grapes took place, with more than 1000 kg of grapes, and since then the harvest is celebrated every year in Chartres.
