This is the story of the art of men. Of winegrowers who covered the rolling hills of Cognac with Ugni blanc grape stock. Of coopers, masters of fire who shaped the oak barrels destined to receive the nectar of the gods. Of the bouilleurs de cru who distil twice using copper pot stills. Of cellar masters who blend the eaux-de-vie of different ages and origins thanks to the memory of their noses! Enter the ageing storehouses and “paradise” where hundred year-old cognacs are kept and learn to taste all the unique aromas of world-famous unique cognacs. Each cognac house has its own history; each circuit is a unique experience. Workshops or interactive guided visits to create your own cognac, cookery classes based on cognac are just some of the ways to enter the world of cognac at the Camus cognac house. Otard, which is installed in the Château des Valois, the castle where François 1er was born, offers visits which combine the history of cognac and History with a capital H. Courvoisier also opens the doors

to its chais or storehouses and to its collection of Napoleonic memorabilia. Martell, which was founded in 1715, provides an initiation into all the stages of production: distillation, blending, ageing, bottling, barrel-making. Hennessy, for its part, has opted for a combination of tradition and modernity. On one bank of the river Charente, this prestigious merchant house can be explored in a glass building designed by the contemporary architect Wilmotte. On the other bank, the chais stand guard over hundred-yearold eaux-de-vie. At Rémy Martin, the circuit can be made by train, by bicycle or by car, in order to follow and understand each stage in the production of cognac... before an oenological and gastronomic exploration of the Nectar of the Gods. Special favorite Art & Wood Wood, a noble material and a source of inspiration, is on show all year long at Bréville, which has the label “Ville et Métiers d’Art” with its monumental sculptures and craftsmen installed in the heart of the village. The “Art et passion bois” festival, an annual event not to be missed, promotes craft trades associated with wood by organising exhibitions, demonstrations of know-how, lectures, courses, events, an international woodturning competition and shows... centred on wood. Wood is also at the heart of the festivities in Chasseneuil during the “Festibois” which presents stringed instrument makers, cabinetmakers, carpenters... All the dates are on www.visitcharente.com

The “real charentaise” was born in the Charente. Is there any need to repeat it? The “charentaise”, emblem of the know-how of local artisans and symbol of an enduring success story, has the luxury of always being in fashion! The origin of the famous slipper is... the waste from the Royal Arsenal in Rochefort. A cobbler from La Rochefoucauld had the idea of combining the slipper with a stiff waterproof felt. Then an industrialist invented the technique of gluing felt and exported the slippers all over the world. Today’s charentaise has been modernised, stylised and, taking its inspiration from works of art, now sports new colours and patterns. A real star which has been even been paraded before the Eiffel Tower. It just goes to show! The Charente also celebrates craftsmanship in many other places. Just push open the doors of the workshops where artisans transform clay, stone, wood, metal

and material into unique works of art. Sculpture, marquetry, wrought iron work, ceramics, stained glass or pianos... inspiration and know-how are their trademark. The secret of the mills With the millers at the Moulin de la Forge, there is no time to fall asleep..., you have got to keep an eye on things! Bring the family and discover this old 17th century mill which stands at the heart of the exceptional site of the old cannon works at Rancogne. Thanks to its paddle wheel, it uses hydrauli energy to produce its own electricity but also natural oils and flours (maize, chestnut, walnut, spelt…). Canoeing or rafting in the white waters of the rivers is a good way to exercise. On the Vienne, you can try radelage, a form of rafting. At Montbron or Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, you can choose between canoe or kayak. At Jarnac, you have the opportunity to try the canobus. This craft is designed for nine people and a helmsman. In the valley of the Eaux Claires, at the gates of Angoulême, the great white limestone cliffs are ideal for climbing, making this natural site a renowned place for climbers. At the lakes of the Upper Charente you can also climb in the Aventure Parc® which takes you from the roots right up to the treetops. Splashing around The countryside also has its beaches… Fine sand or grassy banks, at the lakes in the Upper Charente, at the lake at Brossac, on the vast manmade lake at Saint-Yrieix by the gates of Angoulême or on the banks of the Charente, the Dronne and other rivers, there are numerous opportunities for freshwater bathing. At Lavaud and Mas Chaban, in the heart of the Charente Limousine, two neighbouring lakes cover more than 350 ha and become a full-scale playground during the holidays! The scenery is unspoiled and the water is ideal for all the family to play. Children and parents come to bathe, to ride on pedalos, to do canoeing, rowing, sailing catamarans, Optimistes, dinghies or sailboards… The lakes in the Upper Charente are also well stocked with fish. They are classified as category 2 and will afford anglers moments of tranquillity and some fine catches! Around Lake Lavaud, two beaches of fine sand are perfect for lazing around. Lying with your feet by the water’s edge… this may be real pleasure!

The facilities at the lakes in the Upper Charente have been adapted in several places for disabled people (picnic areas, landing stages for disabled anglers). The beach at Guerlie has the Tourism and Handicap label: special matting on the beach, the Audioplage guidance system and Tiralos (floating beach chairs on wheels are available). It was a place where trades from land and sea came together (gabarriers or bargees, carpenters, harnessmakers, long sawyers, caulkers, washerwomen, fishermen…). Saint-Simon has preserved the memory of its rich past, notably in the “Maison des Gabarriers”. The gabarre was a flat-bottomed boat about thirty metres long, used to transport goods inland from the sea and from the countryside to the port. Wines, eaux-de-vie, paper and stone headed towards the sea; fish, salt, spices and coal formed the cargo for the return trip. Built using the old drawings of a gabarre, “La Dame Jeanne” in Cognac or “La Renaissance” in SaintSimon glide gently past from April to October, offering the opportunity to observe the unusual flora and fauna of the water’s edge. A special place has long been set aside in Angoulême for the 9th art. This can be seen in the visit to the International Comic Strip Centre with its collection of original plates, magazines and spin-offs, exhibitions... then you will set off to explore the new Angoulême Museum (with audio guides) with its wealth of treasures in a case of stone and glass. A self-guided visit of the town, a gastronomic dinner and a gourmand gift will complete the programme for this break.

Saint-Simon preserves the memory of small craft and river trade on the Charente. paradise on earth The town itself as much as its famous eau-de-vie make Cognac definitely worth visiting. François 1er was born there, started the trade in salt on the river and brought prosperity to the town. Cognac is a story of men and angels… who will reveal to you some of their secrets.

Special favorite An angel passes...

The evaporation of the alcohol which is called the angels’ share, has stamped its mark on the white stone walls and the roofs of the town. A microscopic fungus called “Torula compniacensis” is the cause of this black velvet, a reminder that the chais or storehouses were installed and still remain in the heart of the town.

On the right bank stands the quarter of SaintJacques with its shops, its open air market and mooring facilities for river boats. On the left bank, history has left its mark in the old cobbled streets. Pass through the old gates to the town before exploring the 12th century church of St-Léger with its splendid rose window, the Récollets convent and the Lieutenance, a fine half-timbered town house. “Old” Cognac is a concentration of history and architecture. In the 19th century the covered market, a large park and imposing town houses enriched the setting. Cognac is a town of history and a town on the move, bustling with activity all year long outside the cafés, inside the restaurants on the place François 1er where the statue of the former sovereign takes pride of place.

Not to be missed: the Château des Valois, of which the oldest parts date from the 13th century, is the headquarters of a major cognac house. The art of cognac is the business of men and women who share the same passion for their vineyards and region. They are winegrowers, distillers, cellar masters, stave splitters, chestnut hoop splitters, coopers and glassmakers...

The five colour-coded itineraries of the Etapes du Cognac lead you from village to village seeking out the secrets of the vines, the river, stone in construction and the traditions of the vineyards. All along these trails which marry winegrowing and tourism, local people, masters of their art, welcome you and share their world with you for a few hours. Almost 200 signposted trails (vines, gourmet, discovery, relaxation) offer a wide range of activities to explore the vineyards in the Charente. The Circuit du chêne (the oak trail) takes you on a journey to discover three different trades which work hand in hand. The merrandier (stave splitter) prepares and cuts the wood for the cooper. He makes

the oak barrels by heating the wood so that it can be bent, and then a second time to transform the elements in the wood. Depending on the temperature and heating time, the wood in the barrel can smell of hazelnut, bread or toasted almonds... Then the distiller explains how the wine is heated in great copper pot stills. From the first chauffe or heating he extracts the « brouillis » which is returned to the boiler to be distilled a second time. During this « bonne chauffe » (good heating), the « têtes » (heads) and the « secondes » (tails) are eliminated and only the heart of the eau-de-vie is retained to be aged in the chais or storehouses. more details on www.visitcharente.com

Spotlight An underground church Unique and inordinately high, the church dedicated to SaintJean at Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is the largest underground church in Europe. It was carved out of the rock by the disciples of Saint Maur in the 12th century. In the centre of the apse stands a monolithic reliquary in the Romanesque style. The sarcophagi lie in the necropolis. The nave rises to a height of 20 metres. It is breathtaking! Audioguides are available in the church and guided visits are organised all through the year.

Take a stroll

round the village In red granite, white limestone, historic, protected or listed, set low in a valley or on a rocky spur, each village has a thousand and one things hidden away to discover as you take a stroll… Spotlight on Aubeterre-sur-Dronne which belongs to the very exclusive club of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”. Facing the sun, it seems to emerge from the limestone cliff. The houses with their wooden balconies try to outdo each other in terms of elegance, the tiny gardens appear to be suspended on the cliff face. The church of Saint-Jacques unveils its fine 18 metre high Romanesque façade, adorned with the signs of the Zodiac. The place Trarieux, named after the founder of the League of Human Rights who was born here, takes on an Italian air in the summer. Craftsmen, potters, glass blowers, wooden mobile producers, antique dealers and secondhand dealers have set up shop close by. Farther on, there is a buried treasure: an amazing underground church.

In Villebois-Lavalette, the 17th century covered market with its magnificent wooden roof structure is very eye-catching. The village, set on a hill surrounded by the crenellated ramparts and six guard towers, can be seen from afar. Brigueuil, another fortified village, tells its story as soon as you pass through the drawbridge gate. The Romanesque church, the square keep and the Logis de l’Espérance all show the role this village played as a stronghold in the Charente Limousine. The head due west to Nanteuil-en-Vallée, a staging post on the route to Santiago de Compostela, to Verteuil-sur-Charente on the banks of the river or to Saint-Simon, the old village where boatbuilders used to construct the gabarres… charming villages dotted throughout the region. They form a dense network and reflect the formidable spiritual movement which so marked medieval Charente. In the early 12th century, the screen façade became an important part of these churches. The highly codified mission of the decoration was to warn against the temptations of life on earth and to glorify life in the hereafter. Another characteristic feature was the ceiling called “row of cupolas”. The nave is capped with a series of stone cupolas, symbols of the heavens. You must

also look up to discover the sculpted images. Figures from the Scriptures, fabulous monsters, animals from the medieval bestiary, vegetal decorations and geometric patterns appear side by side on the stones. Upstream from Angoulême the Charente resembles Louisiana with a maze of small branches winding their way through a veritable bayou. After Angoulême the Charente is tranquil and navigable, dotted with bridges and locks. In places it forms a multitude of small islands… Reserve you boat with on-board accommodation and discover new scenery each day. They are easy to manœuvre and no licence is required. Rambling and riding

There are the greenways round the lakes of the Upper Charente, the GR cross country trails or the route to St-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The hiking trails take from 1 to 6 hours through vineyards, fields of sun flower or the

vast forests of oak and chestnut… Several local loops criss-cross the region. Each loop offers from 4 to three different itineraries: from 4 to 10 km for families, a “discovery” trail of 20 to 40 km and an “exploration” itinerary of 40 to 70 km for the most athletic. These various trails are in addition to the existing network of greenways and bicycle routes which are signposted, maintained and suitable for all types of bicycle. Length of holiday. The client signing the contract stipulating a set length of time may not under any circumstance insist on any right to remain on the premises at the end of the holiday. Liability. SLA are liable under the terms of article 23 of the Act of 13th July 1992 which stipulates the following: “any natural or artificial person who is involved in the operations mentioned in article 1 is rightfully liable towards the purchaser for the correct discharge of the obligations which result from this contract, whether these obligations are to be discharged in person or by other agents providing a service, without prejudice to his/her right to claim against the said agents. However, the natural or artificial person may be released from all or part of the liability by proving that the non-execution of the contract was due either to the purchaser or to the unpredictable and insurmountable act of a third party not normally involved in the provision of the services stipulated in the contract, or to any circumstances beyond their control”.

Payment of the balance. The client must pay the booking department the balance of the services agreed to and remaining owing at least one month prior to the beginning of the holiday notwithstanding article 98, paragraph 10. Any client who does not settle the balance by the agreed date is considered as having cancelled the holiday. This holiday is once more open to purchase and no reimbursement shall be made.

Information. This brochure constitutes the offer mentioned previously in the general conditions herewith and binds SLA. However, since this brochure was published on February 2009, modifications may naturally be made in the number and nature of the services offered. In accordance with article 97 of the general conditions given here above, should any modifications be made, they shall be brought to the client’s notice in writing by SLA before the contract is signed.

Bookings. Bookings can be made either in writing by mail, e-mail, on-line or fax using the booking form in this catalogue or by phone. According to the number of places free, the booking is only deemed to be firm when advance payment amounting to 25 % of the total sum (incl. administration costs) has been settled and a copy of the booking contract signed by the client has been sent back to SLA before the date stipulated on the contract.

Late bookings. In the case where the booking takes place less than 30 days before the beginning of the holiday, the payment of the total amount of the holiday price is required, notwithstanding article 98 of the general terms and conditions of sales hereabove.

Vouchers. Upon receipt of the balance, SLA will send the client the vouchers to be given to the various agents providing a service during the holiday, or acknowledgement of receipt. Arrival. The client must arrive on the day and at the time mentioned on the contract or the voucher. In the case of a late or delayed arrival, or should the client be unable to leave at the last minute, the client must inform the agent

whose address and telephone number appear on the voucher. Any services not enjoyed due to this lateness must be paid for and can in no way lead to reimbursement of any kind. Cancellation by the client. Any cancellation must be notified by recorded delivery letter or telegram to SLA. The cancellation of the holiday by the client implies that the client shall not be reimbursed for a certain amount which varies according to the type and date of the holiday, plus the administrative and insurance costs. Unless otherwise stipulated, the following is valid: • Cancellation occurring more than 30 days before the beginning of the holiday: 10 % of the total cost of the holiday shall be retained. • Cancellation occurring between the 30th and the 21st day inclusive before the beginning of the holiday: 25 % of the total cost of the holiday shall be retained. • Cancellation occurring between the 20th and the 8th day inclusive before the beginning of the holiday: 50 % of the total cost of the holiday shall be retained. • Cancellation occurring between the 7th and the 2nd day inclusive before the beginning of the holiday: 75 % of the total cost of the holiday shall be retained. • Cancellation occurring less than 2 days before the beginning of the holiday: 90 % of the total cost of the holiday shall be retained. Should the client not arrive for the holiday at all, no reimbursement whatsoever shall be made. If a cancellation insurance policy has been taken out when booking the holiday, refer to the insurance information sheet enclosed with the contract. Modification by SLA of an important element of the contract. Refer to article 101 of the general terms and conditions of sale hereabove. Cancellation due to SLA. Refer to article 102 of the general terms and conditions of sale hereabove. Inability of SLA to provide the services scheduled in the contract during the holiday. Refer to article 103 of the general terms and conditions of sale hereabove.

wards the seller for the payment of the balance of the amount due and any supplementary costs incurred due to the transfer. Insurance. The client is liable for any damage occurring through his/her fault. He/she is requested to check whether he/she is covered by any personal insurance policy covering vacations. If this is not the case, he/she is strongly advised to take out an insurance policy. The amounts guaranteed by this personal insurance in no way constitute a limit in terms of liability. SLA provide the client with the possibility of taking out an insurance policy covering the consequences of certain cases of cancellation and assistance. The content of the guarantees and exclusions is given in a document which shall be handed to the purchaser when he/she takes out a policy. SLA are insured in terms of the professional civil liability as mentioned elsewhere. Claims. Any claim relating to the non-execution or inadequate execution of the contract must be sent to SLA as rapidly as possible by recorded delivery mail and may also be sent in writing to the holiday organiser and the agents involved with the service concerned. Claims concerning the state of the accommodation provided must be reported to SLA within 48 hours of arrival. Liability. SLA has taken out an insurance policy with Generali France assurances, amounting to 3 811 225 e per annum and per accident covering physical injury and intangible and material damage, contract n° 54 337 321 F covering the consequences of professional civil liability.

Published 1st January 2004. In accordance with the act regarding “computing and liberty”, it is compulsory to give names when completing the booking file. You may exert your right to access and correct the information with SLA Charente and unless other stipulated specifically, this information may be transferred on a commercial basis.

Curtailing or modification of the holiday due to the client. Should the client curtail the holiday, no reimbursements hall be made unless there a sons for curtailing the holiday are covered by the cancellation insurance policy taken out by the client. Excepting prior agreement by SLA the client may not alter any element of the holiday on his/her own account. The cost of any modifications not accepted by SLA remain entirely due by the client, without him/her being able to claim any reimbursement for the services he/she has not enjoyed through his/her own modifications. Modification to the number of persons on the contract. The contract is drawn up for a precise number of persons. Should this number be different, SLA reserve the right to modify or cancel the contract. If the number of participants exceeds the accommodation capacity, the agent concerned may refuse the non-registered, additional clients since the contract is deemed to have been breached by the client. In this case, the price of the service remains in the possession of SLA. Pets. Any client bringing a pet must first obtain the prior agreement of SLA. The contract stipulates whether the pet may stay with the client or not. Transfer of contract by the client. Refer to article 103 of the general terms and conditions of sale hereabove. The contract is conveyed at cost price by the transferor to the transferee. The transferor alone is indivisibly liable to-
