WHAT IS A EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE? > A coveted title First granted by the European Union in 1985, the title of European Capital of Culture has over the years become a coveted and sought-after distinction. Each year, the title is conferred on two cities or regions chosen through an international contest, for the space of a year. For the winning cities, it provides the opportunity to showcase a high concentration of European cultural excellence for a full year, and give a large and festive welcome to visitors from all over Europe and around the world.
> Marseille-Provence takes its turn as European Capital of Culture in 2013 This is a milestone event for France, which according to the rules governing the awarding of the title must wait at least 10 years before one of its cities qualifies for candidacy.

THE MARSEILLE PROVENCE 2013 PROJECT
> It is now Marseille Provence’s turn to do honour to the title of European Capital of Culture. For a full year, this region - already a major European tourist destination - will host more than 400 cultural events showcasing the artistic excellence of Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, centred around the following theme: «le partage des midis» («sharing the south»). SHARING THE SOUTH A European Capital of Culture located on the shores of the Mediterranean cannot help but be impacted by its geography—a geography with a long history of journeys, discoveries and major expeditions to faraway lands, and that opens onto landscapes both real and imagined. Marseille is born of the Mediterranean, a sea that is nearly fully surrounded by land. The city itself has one foot in the water and the other firmly standing on the shore. From Aix-en-Provence to Marseille, from Arles to La Ciotat, a constellation of towns and villages fan out across the wide range of landscapes that characterize the region of Provence. The region’s unique social and geographical features may be classified in three broad categories: cosmopolitanism, the relationship between nature and towns/cities, and urban cultures. Marseille Provence 2013 has drawn on the region’s unique cultural and societal vitality in crafting the spirit and atmosphere of its programme.
10
The year 2013 will unfold like a long chronicle told in three parts. The story’s central theme is the Mediterranean, the narrative of its two shores, and «sharing the south». This is the common thread running through the entire programme. The story is told in three parts: Part 1
« Marseille Provence, welcoming the world », shines a spotlight on the local tradition of hospitality, cosmopolitanism, and relationships with others. It is made up primarily of the ceremonies, celebrations and opening events of the Capital year. It testifies to the richness of the new art forms, which are blossoming in the region’s towns and demonstrates new artistic fields and dimensions. A case in point is the This is (not) music event. Part 2
« M a r s e i l le P ro v e n c e , o p e n s k y » , runs throughout the summer, and will focus on the relationship with nature, hiking and walking. Outdoor and nocturnal shows and concerts will be held in special locations for the first time. The combination of talent and joyful encounters will make this festival season a truly exceptional one.
Part 3
« Marseille Provence, land of diversity » , highlights art and togetherness in public spaces, new contemporary literature, pieces composed for children and young people, and on some of the great personalities in the history of Mediterranean art and thought.
In addition to the event programming centred around these three parts, there will also be several mobile and/or itinerant events which will inject a central undertone of travel, touring into the Capital region throughout the whole of 2013. This includes, for example, the GR©2013, TransHumance, the Centre Pompidou Mobile, Travellings screens, and the «Grandes Carrioles». These itinerant events will make it possible for a wide variety of audiences to come together under the banner of getting to know one another. Each of the three parts open with a focus on a particular artistic discipline or a regional highlight that includes several major events, such as: the inauguration of new cultural venues, the unveiling of new exhibitions, the start of one or several programmes for a particular artistic discipline, such as circus arts in part 1.
11
PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME > During the whole year of 2013, visitors and residents alike enjoy outstanding moments throughout the Marseille Provence region. The festivities invite all of the region’s residents as well as visitors, to come together for an exceptional programme of events. The day and evening of Saturday, 12 January 2013, will be highlighted by the participation of the Patrouille de France, the inauguration of a new contemporary art tour, the opening of new sites dedicated to culture, the hosting of balls, musical performances and never before seen pyrotechnical shows. Unexpected and spectacular events will be held all throughout the weekend, specially designed to delight old and young alike.
An original exhibition that presents a collective work created by artists from all over the Mediterranean Basin and Near East. With its own take on the surrealist practice of «exquisite corpse», where each artist takes part in a creative assembly chain by creating a work in response to that of their immediate predecessor, the museum Granet has invited artists (painters, sculptors, visual artists, photographers, video creators, writers, poets, musicians, etc.) to take part in a collective work in progress in its truest sense over a two-year period (2011 and 2012).

BERNAR VENET The sculptor Bernar Venet is invited to created a colossal new work of art in a public space. The work is composed of seven groups of classic arches - a hallmark of his art. The incandescent glimmer of steel and the arches facing the Mediterranean pay hommage to the naval tradition and history of the site, which stands over the entrance to Marseille’s Vieux-Port (old port). «Upon first spotting the Pharo, that magnificent esplanade overlooking the Vieux-Port and part of the city of Marseille, my decision was made.» The artist seeks to collocate his stark and austere designs with the site’s classical architecture. RODIN, THE SHADOW OF ANTIQUITY An exhibition which pays hommage to Rodin (one of the greatest French sculptors) and specifically one of his favourite themes: antiquity. This exhibition draws on antiquity not only as a source of inspiration but also of art itself. It is built around eight presentations which juxtapose some of Rodin’s most important sculptures with antique counterparts from some of the world’s greatest museums. Through his sculpting Rodin sought to continue the art as first practised by the ancient Greeks. He never tra-
velled to Greece, but did collect a large number of replicas, creating his own museum of Greek art. Where? MUSÉE DÉPARTEMENTAL ARLES ANTIQUE avenue 1re-Division-France-libre, presqu’île du Cirque romain, 13200 Arles Entrance fee: E Getting there: Head towards town centre

KADER ATTIA’S TERRACES A monumental work by this artist is set up along the Digue du Large, the sea wall which outlines the entrance to the port of Marseille. This long and thin dyke separating the sea and the city runs for 7 km from the Vieux-Port to the Estaque neighbourhood. A one kilometre stretch is being fully renovated for 2013 to create one of the key promenades of the Capital of Culture year. Visitors can enjoy this work of art as they stroll along a path strewn with viewpoints that provide some of the best panoramas of the port, the city and the open sea. The European Capital of Culture coincides with the transformation of the Marseille sea front and its new urban and port landscape - a new lifeline between the city and its port. THIS IS (NOT) MUSIC
THE CRAZY HISTORY OF STREET ART
This is (not) Music is a collection of nearly 40 consecutive days of festivities and artistic performances, offering a 360° view on all art forms, including contemporary art, street art, urban sports and contemporary music, spread out over the 40,000 m2 of the Friche la Belle de Mai. This grand event dedicated to new urban culture provides a great opportunity for visitors of all kinds - from the simply curious to dedicated nightlifers - to discover and enjoy a range of artistic concepts and new friendly urban spaces during the Capital of Culture year.
Street art is one crazy story, and local residents and visitors will witness dozens of performances and presentations that tell it. From burlesque street shows to interactive presentations, each troupe invites us to look at our world differently, and to reinvent and use the spaces around us in new and different ways. The special 2013 edition of The Crazy History of Street Art, created by Karwan, roams the Capital of Culture region, touching down in 6 towns where local and national artists will share the «stage» with artists from around Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. This varied group of artists will appropriate each town, transform it and tell its story.

CLOUD
FAIRY TRAIL
This exhibition takes a new look at a figure who since the Middle Ages has infiltrated and haunted the world of painting and art. It includes sculptures, installation art, paintings, soundbased art, photographic works, film, decorative art (fashion, furniture, etc.), among which also feature archaeological pieces, fragments of nature and ancient treasures. Manifestations of the cycle of life both subtle and grandiose, natural spectacles in a state of continual regeneration, a never-ending display of unique creations-clouds are endlessly fascinating creatures that incorporate all the attributes of the sublime: elusiveness, metamorphosis, and above all, lightness of being.
A project to beautify the Huveaune river, which flows through the Bouches-du-Rhône, and refresh this heritage of both natural and historic significance, includes five sculptures and a meeting spot placed along the waterway, from its source in the Sainte-Baume mountains near Nans-lesPins, to its mouth in Marseille near Borély park. A project by Lucy and Jorge Orta under the auspices of the Nouveaux Commanditaires (New Collectors) programme.

WATER PATHS Internationally renowned Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata has created a tour of six works of art, both sculpture and architecture, that highlight the Camargue landscape and heritage and provides a glimpse of another side of Camargue than that which is typically idealised - its «wild» side. The first site is the Mas Neuf du Vaccarès at the Château d’Avignon. This is a key Camargue stop where visitors can explore the region’s unique natural spaces and discover the richness of its fauna. Camargue, a wetland of significant importance, is a major migratory stop for ducks and water birds (pink flamencos and herons). More than 150,000 birds travel there every year. Entrance fee: Free

BLUE AND BLACK A MEDITERRANEAN DREAM
Contemporary Art
ULYSSES
This exhibition is designed in the form of a story, a journey. It combines outstanding paintings, photographs and sculptures, with original documents, manuscripts and rare books. It explores the different facets of the Mediterranean dream down through the ages, from the eighteenth to the twentyfirst centuries. It is a journey made through shadows and light, through barbarianism and civilization, through Blue and Black.
A collection of monographic and thematic exhibitions including commissioned works of art, works from local artists, event programmes, etc. The Ulysses project aims to create an itinerary that crosses the entire Capital region based on the emblematic figure of Ulysses. It unites over forty highly diverse partners, contemporary art spaces as well as - in a more unusual vein - heritage sites and natural landscapes, with over a hundred different artists.

In an effort to broach one of the biggest questions facing today’s societies-the relationship between men and women, and more specifically the significant changes in the order of the sexes-MuCEM presents a journey through what it means to be a man or a woman in the various societies of today’s Mediterranean Basin. Objects from the museum’s ethnological collections are combined with testimonies from men and women, film clips and contemporary art installations. This place, full of memories and history, includes a museum and educational centre which hosts cultural activities, debates, conferences and workshops. It is the only intact French internment camp open to the public and one of the few preserved places in Europe that tells the tragic story of internment and deportation during World War Two (1939-1942). More than 10,000 people from 27 different nationalities were interred there, including many artists, who created hundreds of works of art (Max Ernst, Hans Bellmer, Golo Mann, etc.)
The CeReM is a centre dedicated to promoting dialogue and exchange. Christian Lacroix / CIRVA’s collection
This museum opens the doors at its new location in the old health station built by architects Champollion, Fernand Pouillon and René Egger in 1948. Totally renovated and redesigned, the site includes four exhibition areas (a collection from the Foundation as well as temporary exhibitions dedicated to modern and contemporary art and the history of the site). The facility is intimately intertwined with Marseille and its port, since it acted as one of the main points of entry and departure for travellers and immigrants arriving by air or sea.
This large exhibition presented by the Centre de monuments nationaux (national monuments centre) and the main designer for Christian Lacroix, is held at an exceptional site: Montmajour Abbey, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage. Important pieces from the CIRVA collection (Centre international de recherche sur le verre et les arts plastiques - international centre for research on glass and contemporary art), located in Marseille, have been assembled for the occasion.

PART 2 MARSEILLE PROVENCE OPEN SKY June to September > This summer, more than any other, is an excellent time to enjoy the evenings. The warm summer air is an invitation to leave the towns behind and stray off the beaten paths. All summer long, dozens of festivals - on a range of themes - take place throughout the region. Provence has a rich history of festivals and is second to none in boasting a landscape and climate that so perfectly lends itself to outdoor events. The quest for human adventure and travel continues with TransHumance, a unique experience involving hundreds of hikers spanning multiple cities, three countries and two continents. The second series of European Capital of Culture exhibitions unfold under the double banner of dreams and connections. The dream is, firstly, that of the MuCEM, a unique architectural creation at the entrance of Marseille’s Vieux-Port: the Mediterranean Basin as a bridge between East and West. But the dream is also that of Van Gogh - who features in the summer’s centrepiece exhibition held in Aix and Marseille, with stops in Aubagne, Martigues, Cassis and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence which was to create a workshop for artists in the south of France. On the one hand is the brightly coloured dream of southern France as an Arcadia - a rediscovered antiquity, a Mediterranean Picasso of fauns and ceramics. On the other is Cézanne’s more formal dream of a painter’s «promised land», with windows by Matisse and Dalí. These Mediterranean dreams open their arms wide to embrace us all throughout the summer of the Capital of Culture year.

The «Théâtre du Centaure» invites everyone to take part in a long walk featuring both man and beast. The result is a unique and authentic experience, which can be enjoyed either on foot or horseback, where participants can join in the adventure and take part in the creation of a collective work of art, whether it be for a day or three weeks. At nightfall, on a dozen evenings throughout the journey, the caravanserai invite riders, hikers and other participants to enjoy cultural and artistic presentations together as well as culinary treats and surprising encounters with an eclectic mix of shepherds, poets, astrophysicists, scientists and others.
Daniel Buren, one of the most internationally renowned French artists, creates a project specifically designed to fill public spaces. A tour takes visitors on a new artistic promenade through a park of sculptures encircling the Lac de l’Olivier. Daniel Buren’s in situ works are the result of his first-hand encounter with the site. They both reflect and transform the spaces they occupy, inviting visitors to take a walk through ephemeral structures.

RAOUL DUFY, FROM MARTIGUES TO L’ESTAQUE The exhibition shines the spotlight on works created by Dufy at workshops located in the south of France, from his first stay in Martigues to the paintings he did in Marseille at the end of the First World War. The Musée Ziem allows visitors to follow the research performed by Dufy over the course of two decades from Martigues to L’Estaque, including canvases and sketches for the most part never before exhibited. Raoul Dufy is one of the grand masters of twentieth century painting who came to Provence for the quality of the light. A visit to this museum is also an excellent opportunity to explore the town of Martigues, formerly a small fishing village, and its old town centre on the waterfront between the Etang de Berre and the Mediterranean Sea. FELICE VARINI Get the full Felice Varini experience in an exceptional historical setting! The terrace of the Château de l’Emperi, a ninth century fort classified as a «historical monument» and crown jewel of the town of Salon-de-Provence, provides the vantage point for one of Felice Varini’s monumental paintings. Architectural constructions are the canvas for Felice Varini’s works of art. When viewed from a certain vantage point, generally located at the artist’s eye level, a simple geometric form appears, painted on walls but providing the illusion of having been painted on a single plane. As one moves away from the vantage point, the painting becomes fragmented and provides an infinite number of viewpoints. The view, from all of its viewpoints, is certainly worth the trip! In addition to its castle, Salon-de-Provence offers visitors the opportunity to visit Nostradamus’s old house and two traditional soap factories. Where? PART 3 MARSEILLE PROVENCE LAND OF DIVERSITY September to December > « An immense door through which the hundred faces of our vast world flow in and out.» Albert Londres, Marseille, Porte du Sud, 1926. Nearly a century later, the region’s faces during this third and final act of the European Capital of Culture number not one hundred, but one thousand. These faces are first and foremost the great «Mediterranean figures» those emblematic personalities who continue to light our consciousness and fuel our imagination, such as Averroès, Camus, Le Corbusier, Pasolini, Penone, Pistoletto, and others. Autumn 2013 also unfolds under the banner of the art of living together, and there is hardly any moment that embodies shared experiences more than good cuisine - the guest of honour for these festivities. The grand festival of cuisine brings us right up close to the local vineyards and culinary talents, and mixes all of the arts in its pot. Metamorphoses sprinkles its magic throughout the Marseille-Provence region, in places reinvented for the occasion. This autumn is also the opportunity to discover new budding authors and contemporary creative talents from the region and elsewhere. Meanwhile, children and parents are invited to enjoy a Travel Journal - a multi-discipline event for children and youth. And at Digital Landscapes in Aix, Cézanne rubs shoulders with the latest technology. Throughout the autumn of 2013, contrasting shades find their deepest hues during a time of celebration with a thousand faces and a thousand flavours.

INNOVART chronicles of possible worlds
«CUISINE EN FRICHE» FESTIVAL
An exceptional programme where a variety of disciplines devoted to new technologies and innovation are presented to visitors - knowledgeable fans and curious onlookers alike - both within the walls of Fondation Vasarely as well as through urban tours to uncommon places in the town centre and the Pays d’Aix. With a schedule packed with popular events and top-quality contemporary creations, this production presents Chronicles of possible worlds, combining the talents of cutting-edge artists in the field of contemporary creativity and new technologies.

> La Ciotat AUTUMN Film, Theatre
OPENING OF THE ÉDEN THEATRE The re-opening of the Éden, the great-grandfather of the world’s movie theatres, makes La Ciotat the destination of choice when it comes to the origins and history of film. The cinematic tour begins at the town’s legendary train station, immortalised by the Lumière brothers in the film Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat. After passing through the Lumière mansion - the summer residence of the cinematic inventors and where they filmed their first films (such as The Waterer Watered) - visitors reach the Éden Théâtre, site of the first private showing by the Lumière brothers. Finally, they visit the Pénitents-Bleus chapel, dedicated to the display of photographs related to filmmaking. The Éden Theatre is kicking off its restoration with a perennial schedule that focuses on restored films and festivals. The films and the archives of the working world of years gone by stirs another set of memories from La Ciotat - the lovely history of the naval docks which, along with the Lumière brothers, brought this little Mediterranean port to the attention of the whole world at the end of the nineteenth century. Part 3 Marseille Provence land of diversity > Marseille and surroundings 20 SEPTEMBER - 6 OCTOBER Art in public spaces
METAMORPHOSES As part of a project launched by Lieux Publics, a national creative centre for street arts, forty teams of artists will beautify public spaces. Hailing from fifteen different European countries, they will transform a gigantic façade into a deforming mirror, marketplaces, fountains and stairs into as many dance floors; streets into cross-cultural music scores or imaginary art galleries; subway halls into role-playing scenes or Antarctic zoos; walls into screens or showcases; and more. Who would have thought that the whole town could be converted into a huge playground? These artists help us discover the joys of recasting and transforming, and the pleasure of enjoying urban spaces when shared with others. Where? Programme available in September 2012 Entrance fee: free
> Marseille MID-SEPTEMBER 2013 TO MID-JANUARY 2014 Architecture
LE CORBUSIER A large exhibition centred around Le Corbusier, one of the greatest figures in the history of architecture and urban development. This exhibition takes visitors on a journey of discovery of the legendary architect, with presentations of his work (plans, models, and sketches), as well as the artist himself through his research (drawings, paintings, sculptures, lithographies, and rugs). And there is no better place for this retrospective look than Marseille, the city on which he stamped a new style and where he indelibly marked twentieth century architectural history with his «unité d’habitation» (residential unit) and the «Cité radieuse» (Radiant City) that he built. Where? J1 Place de la Joliette, 13002 Marseille. See the detailed information page 73 Entrance fee: E Getting there: Underground Joliette Line 2 / Tram Joliette Line 2

CAMUS, THE FOREIGNER WHO IS ONE OF US This exhibition gives visitors from far and wide the opportunity to discover, or rediscover, the writer Albert Camus, and not only his work, but also the man himself with his complexities and engagements. Novelist, playwright, essayist and journalist - Camus was all of these in one. Each facet of his work nourished and shed light on the others.
2013 will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Albert Camus’ birth. Which symbolic figure could more aptly illustrate the «Mediterranean man» than this figure who hailed from both of its shores? Where? CITÉ DU LIVRE-BIBLIOTHÈQUE MÉJANES 8-10 rue des Allumettes, 13100 Aix-en-Provence See the detailed information page 74 Entrance fee: free Getting there: Aix-en-Provence town centre

THE CENTRE POMPIDOU MOBILE The Centre Pompidou makes itself at home in the land of Marcel Pagnol! Starting in November, Aubagne will be the site of the first «nomadic» museum in the world: the Centre Pompidou Mobile. Visitors can enjoy works by Matisse, Braque, Picasso as well as Calder, Dubuffet and Léger, against the backdrop of the enchanting landscapes so beloved by Pagnol. It showcases the best of the permanent collection at the Centre Pompidou in Paris - Europe’s premier collection of modern and contemporary art. The 650 m2 Centre Pompidou Mobile was designed by the architect Patrick Bouchain and is made up of units fashioned in the spirit of fairground bigtops and ambulant circus acts. At Aubagne, the Centre Pompidou Mobile will spread out along the banks of the Huveaune, in a fully renovated public space. Educational tours and activities will make it easy for everyone to enjoy this museum right in the heart of the town. Entrance fee: Free Getting there: Aubagne town centre
> MP2013 region NOVEMBER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS (ALL SAINTS DAY) YOUNG AUDIENCE
TRAVEL JOURNAL The November school holidays swing to the rhythm of young people by providing children with a space that is entirely their own. This includes a large itinerant exhibition named the «Atlas of Imaginary Worlds», held at the BMVR Alcazar library in Marseille and the libraries of Vitrolles and Miramas. It also includes shows (theatre, puppets, dance, circus acts, etc.), a mini rock festival, and film showings, all of which will take place throughout the region. Children can invent, create, play, build cabins, or sail (for real!) on fake boats. They can also join their parents at the Fotokino studio where they’ll be treated to a special edition of the Laterna Magica festival and enjoy some snacks or make friends with the chefs at the food carts. School is fun; but holidays are so much more fun. Where? Programme available in September 2012 Entrance fee: E

Extension to the Musée Départemental Arles Antique Excavations performed in recent years in the Rhône river have led to the discovery of lovely objects yielding a wealth of information on the ancient history of Arles, including such emblematic treasures as a bust of Julius Caesar and the Gallic-Roman barge Arles-Rhône 3. An extension has been added to the museum to house these findings extracted from the Rhône River. The centrepiece of the new wing - which covers nearly 900 m² - is the Arles-Rhône 3 barge, which dates from 50-60 A.D., shown as if it were docked. Surrounding the boat are three sections highlighting the role of the Rhône River in ancient times - the port and the activities conducted there, fluvial and maritime trade, and navigation. The extension, which expounds on these three themes, displays more than 400 objects, many of which come from recent excavations. THE CRAZY HISTORY OF STREET ART Fresh from the success of its two previous editions, The crazy story of street art invites us all to a special edition that dispenses with event scheduling tradition and assembles a selection of great art troupes rarely seen performing in the region. As it moves from town to town, The crazy story of street art invites one and all to an exploration of identities and a unique marriage of various forms of street art through its over 50 shows, tours and art installations. With performances as varied as a choreographed digger act, a 29-hour artistic camp smack in the middle of the town, improvs, and chromatic «euphorie» multimedia performances, each troupe invites us to look at the world through new eyes, to rediscover the town, to see its walls and streets through another light and different colours. The motto of this special edition is: New large-scale productions - make that VERY large scale - with an emphasis on the atypical, unexpected and crazy!

Collective walk and work of art
TRANSHUMANCE Man and beast join together in an authentic and poetic experience
•••••••••••••••••••
This walking tour of men and animals is part of a novel collective artistic and poetic movement. The result is a unique and authentic experience, which can be enjoyed either on foot or horseback, where participants join in the adventure and take part in the creation of a collective work of art, whether it be for a day or three weeks (300 km total). Starting from three departure points, three transhumance groups will converge on the Crau plains near Arles, where several thousand people and animals will join together in a caravanserai under the starry skies. Each stage, set in a location that is emblematic of the region, is a magical occasion for sharing and new encounters.
Local gatherings for hikers and riders, open to all
The herds of animals travel to some outstanding sites, and the animal glyphs (animal herd choreographies) which are photographed and filmed from the sky, turn TransHumance into a unique artistic creation.

Civilization and History
NAVIGATIONS AND MEDITERRANEANS A gigantic «fictional exhibition» in an amazing architectural setting made of containers which alternate to give visitors a view of the sea, masterpieces of Greek and Roman sculpture, bas-reliefs, oil paintings by the grand masters, rare manuscripts, and ship models, while navigating a sea of images. A traditional Marseillaise boat and seafarers with tales of Mediterranean adventures are just the start of a journey led by a modern-day Ulysses who sets off to meet our contemporaries before heading back through time to enlighten us on the encounters and exchanges that have shaped the history of the Mediterranean world. The adventure takes us to Tyre of the Phoenicians (to whom we owe our modern alphabet), to Athens during the time of Pericles who built the city’s democracy on the strength of its fleet, to Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli and finally Marseille during the nineteenth century - a century marked by technical advances and colonial conquests. The event features nearly 200 works of art displayed in eleven different stages which can be enjoyed in order or at random.

+ J1 : The «home» of Marseille Provence 2013!
J1 is the last of the four enormous hangars which remain on the port’s expansive docks. Made available by the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille and refitted for the Capital of Culture year, it opens its doors to the public for the first time, becoming a major meeting spot and the «home» of Marseille-Provence 2013, symbolically located in the heart of the port. The J1 dock continues to play host to ships and passengers from around the Mediterranean with a steady flow of ferries docking and undocking. An information centre

has been built on the building’s top level - an immense open area covering 6,000 m2 - providing information to the public on all of the events of the Capital of Culture year. The floor also hosts a restaurant-bar with an unobstructed view of the port and the sea, a conference/presentation room, a boutique/library, and a friendly «workshop of the sea» which includes the participation of local residents. Above all, J1 is dedicated to large exhibitions, which cover an area of 2,500 m2.

HERE, ELSEWHERE An outstanding collection of works, thirty-plus of which were created for this exhibition and never before shown. Some focus on the Mediterranean landscape; many explore the meaning of identity and citizenship; several communicate the experience of emigration, exile or being uprooted. Together they present a view of the past and the present through the eyes of personal accounts, which, in close touch with the social, political and geopolitical realities of the world we live in, tell of the state of our world today and explore changes yet to come. Here, Elsewhere presents the work of nearly forty internationally recognized artists from the countries of the Mediterranean Basin, most of them belonging to the generation born in the 60s and 70s. Many of them live and work in multiple towns and cities, dividing their time between their original home town and the place they now call home.

THE GENDER BAZAR What does it mean to be a Mediterranean man or woman today?
•••••••••••••••••••
In an effort to address one of the major questions facing modern society - the relationship between men and women, and more specifically the significant changes in the order of the genders - MuCEM presents a journey of exploration of what it means to be a man or a woman in the various societies of today’s Mediterranean Basin.
30 artists
The exhibition includes 360 works from nearly 30 artists (including Louise Bourgeois, Gustave Courbet, Pierre et Gilles, Auguste Rodin, Philippe Castetbon, Miss Tic, etc.) as well as over twenty video presentations. Objects from the museum’s ethnological collections are combined with testimonials from men and women, film clips and contemporary art installations, to take a close look at the changes taking place in the values associated with gender inter-relations throughout the Mediterranean region. On display are many of the personalities from both the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean, who boys and girls look up to as role models. The exhibition illustrates the impact which new means of communication are having on the way people first meet, begin dating, become a couple or start a family. It explores the ways in which the established standards on which the very foundations of society are built - religious rules, secular laws, written and unwritten social mores, customs, etc. - and are being confronted by a diverse range of models.
+ Le MuCEM Marseille Schedule at least half a day at the MuCEM site to enjoy its permanent collections and explore this fabulous site that sits astride the new and the old Marseille and which provides an unobstructed view of the city and harbour. LE GRAND ATELIER DU MIDI Major exhibition comprised of two parts presented simultaneously at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence. A first! The Midi (southern France) has been an endless source of inspiration for painters, from the first travels of Renoir and Signac to the present day. This presentation revisits the relationship between the avant-guard artists and the Mediterranean, shows how the «Midi» has been an intersecting point for artists and a laboratory for modern development, and illustrates the dynamics of the new artistic atlas as it has developed through time, the circulation of works and its artists. The exhibition follows the trail of these exchanges for the 1880-1960 period, illustrating the different artistic movements which have punctuated the twentieth century, including impressionism, post-impressionism, fauvism, cubism, surrealism and abstraction. > The Marseille exhibition is titled «De Van Gogh à Bonnard» (From Van Gogh to Bonnard), and highlights, in a unique way, the relationship between light and colour, the hedonist vision, and a look at the myths surrounding Marseille. > The exhibition shown at Aix-en-Provence is titled «De Cézanne à Matisse» (From Cezanne to Matisse), and explores the history of shapes, from cubism to abstraction.

LE CORBUSIER This autumn, Le Corbusier - emblematic figure in Marseille’s urban and architectural history - will take over the vast expanses of J1 which are open to the sea in a setting that has a dual symbolism. Firstly, that of the Mediterranean Sea as «nourisher», a thread which can be found throughout all of Le Corbusier’s work. Secondly, the world of great ships, which stirred Le Corbusier’s imagination and which the Unité d’Habitation of Marseille is a witness of to this day.
•••••••••••••••••••
Presented in the exhibition are creations by the great architect in Marseille, the Sainte Baume, the Roq, Rob, and the Cabanon at Cap Martin, Ronchamp, Tourette, as well as Algiers, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Tokyo and others. With the construction of the «Cité Radieuse», Le Corbusier pioneered a new aesthetic - Brutalism - with an approach that assembled, with the architect as its core, the full range of plastic arts. The exhibition is designed to be the intersection, as shown in his architectural works, of the research performed by Le Corbusier using plastic arts in the last 20 years of his career, from 1945 to 1965. Original works, paintings, sculptures, rugs, lithographies and enamels, as well as images - both stills and moving pictures - combine to illustrate the «synthesis of the arts» that was dear to the heart of this complete artist.

TRIBUTE TO CAMUS French writer, novelist, dramatist, essayist, journalist and philosopher, Albert Camus had a profound influence on entire generations during the twentieth century. 2013 will celebrate 100 years since his birth.
