FROM OUR HOME TO YOURS 2020 has been a year of uncertainty and change for Canadians. COVID-19 has altered nearly all aspects of life, from the ways we work, learn, and play to how we shop, socialize, and where and how we travel. We continue to face challenges around social distancing and isolation, staying connected with loved ones, job security, and working from home—all while possibly juggling (and even homeschooling) children. Despite—or because of—these challenges, we’ve been given the opportunity to consider and possibly realign our priorities. Families are seeking new ways to find fulfillment, connection, and purpose from the comfort and safety of home. For us at Asmodee, board games are an engaging way to have fun, create memories, and resonate with people of all ages. Our articles on family games, party games, and games for kids will walk you through some of our most popular options. Beyond their fun factor, games also immerse us in other worlds, with their often-beautiful imagery, as you’ll see in our article on art in games. In Growth Through Games, we outline exciting research on board games used as teaching tools that provide emotional, cognitive, and social benefits.
JAYSON PICKFORD CEO, Asmodee Canada
Board games have the potential to enrich our lives in many ways, and our hope is that they provide Canadians a little respite as we navigate an ambiguous world. From our family to yours, we hope you stay safe, stay healthy, keep calm, and Game On!

Playing with Art BY EMILY BRADSHAW
Art can be defined as the expression of imagination and creativity, resulting in works valued for their beauty or emotional power. Whatever the medium, art has the power to make us feel. Tranquility, discomfort, amusement, joy, sorrow, anger—art can compel us to action or leave us indifferent. We may find it beautiful or we may not, because art is always subjective. Like art, great games can also move us, their stories or their style of play can capture our attention. Skillfully illustrated games can spark the imagination and elevate our play experience to immerse us in their worlds. They appeal to us on a visceral level and invite us in with the promise of escape.
While great art alone can’t carry a game lacking in content or mechanics, it is arguably the aspect that first sparks our interest. And even the most interesting games can leave players feeling less than satisfied if the artwork falls flat. The following award-winning games have certainly captured our attention. Their unique artwork ranges from simple and elegant, to quirky and fun, to ethereal and mysterious.

Nothing Beats a Neat Game Room BY DAVID FONDA
It doesn’t matter how large or small your game room is. Keeping it clean and well organized will ensure that playtime is always a fun time.
KEEP IT CLEAN
KEEP IT TOGETHER
A messy, cluttered game room is no fun for anyone. If you have the space, designate separate areas for board games, video games, card games, etc. Then keep them separate.
Elastic game box bands or even headbands keep your game boxes closed and their contents intact. Seal game dice in a small, see-through container so you don’t lose them.
Multipurpose seats or benches with built-in storage bins reduce clutter and optimize space, leaving your game room clean and tidy.
KEEP IT ORGANIZED
Gaming tables with removable tops serve double duty as dining tables, leaving your game intact and ready for play after you’ve finished eating. Space-saving, wall-mounted shelves, freestanding cupboards, bookcases, and in-closet storage systems such as hanging closet organizers eliminate clutter.
12
How you organize your games (alphabetically, by colour, by shape, by size) is up to you. Whether you display them on open shelves or tuck them out of sight in a closet, choose a solution that maximizes storage space and keeps things easy to find.

GROWTH THROUGH GAMES When we think of board games, what often comes to mind is fun, friendly competition and quality time with family and friends. While all that is certainly true, did you know that games have a lot more to offer?
photo: André-Olivier Lyra
In this section we explore the cognitive, emotional, and social benefits of board games. We also look at how Asmodee Research, a team dedicated to promoting the social values of tabletop gaming and its exciting first project, Game In Lab, is supporting scientific research on the effects of tabletop gaming.

BEYOND FUN: WHAT TABLETOP GAMES CAN TEACH US BY EMILY BRADSHAW
It’s no secret that children learn through play—this widely recognized fact is backed by years of research. But when we think of the word “play,” what often comes to mind is the world of toys— dolls, cars, building bricks and blocks… But did you know that tabletop games also offer numerous learning benefits? There has been a recent increase in the number of academic and scientific studies focused on the merits of board games as learning tools. Asmodee Research, a division of Asmodee Group, aims to promote the positive social values of gaming beyond pure entertainment and strives to encourage this paradigm shift in professionals. Via its first
22
project, Game In Lab, Asmodee Research supports several international studies from numerous disciplines including psychology, anthropology, healthcare, and education. Anick Pelletier is one of the researchers working with Asmodee Research. Pelletier, a special-needs educator, researcher, and founder of Optineurones, a learning clinic in the province of Quebec, studies the benefits of tabletop gaming in schoolaged children. In her work, Pelletier outlines three principal areas of learning, each encompassing various cognitive, emotional, and social development skills cultivated by tabletop games.

a smod ee – gr owth th r ou gh gam e s
Cognitive Development Cognitive development refers to the formation of thought processes, or the way an individual perceives, thinks, and gains an understanding of the world. Cognitive development encompasses a long list of skills supported by tabletop games including long, short-term, and working memory; language; mathematical reasoning; planning, organization, and strategic flexibility; motor skills; impulse management; internal discourse; and attention.
Emotional Development Emotional development is defined as the process through which children develop the capacity to experience, express, and interpret emotions. Because many games are designed so that players perform actions that are not in the best interests of opponents, they reinforce emotional skills like emotional vocabulary; emotional regulation; behavioural flexibility (the ability to adapt to internal or external circumstances); and self‑regulation.

THERE ARE A MULTITUDE OF GAMES OUT THERE THAT PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF COGNITIVE, EMOTIONAL, AND SOCIAL SKILLS. A FEW OF OUR FAVES INCLUDE:
Social Development Social development is the process through which children learn the values, knowledge, and skills that allow them to relate to the people around them. Because games are often (though not always) played with others, they naturally support the development of social skills like cooperation and the ability to bluff, for example.

THE EFFECTS OF TABLETOP GAMING BY MIKAËL LE BOURHIS
Play has been at the heart of all we do at Asmodee since we were founded in 1995. Our passion for games has led us to become one of the top publishers and distributors in the world. Over the past several years, we’ve cultivated our brands to offer experiences and content like electronic gaming, via Asmodee Digital, or books with Aconyte from Asmodee Entertainment because our mission is to tell engaging stories throughout the world. As a thoughtful leader, Asmodee seeks, on one hand, to bring the best possible products to the market, and on the other hand, to understand the impact of our activity on the industry and its players. With this in mind, Asmodee Research was created in 2018. Its team is dedicated to promoting the social values of tabletop gaming and encouraging its adoption by professionals. Mikaël Le Bourhis (a.k.a. Micha, head of Asmodee Research) aspires to showcase that beyond its fun and entertaining nature, gaming can have a positive impact on society, be it educational, therapeutic, or more. His mission, among other things, is to bring together and support gaming, education, and research professionals, as well as anyone convinced that the hobby has benefits that surpass pure entertainment.

Game In Lab, the first project undertaken by Asmodee Research, is a support program dedicated to scientific research on the effects of tabletop gaming. Driven by researchers from around the world, topics vary from anthropology to psychology, cognition, education, and healthcare. For example, a study headed by Dr. Philippe Robert looks at the impact of a fun activity on patients with Alzheimer’s disease or associated conditions. His team is looking to understand the effects of board games adapted for seniors or for patients, at cognitive, behavioural, and interpersonal levels, or simply for wellbeing.

Philippe Robert is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis, Director of the Cognition, Behavior & Technology (CoBTeK-lab) team, Co-Director of the Resource and Research Memory Center (CMRR) of the University Hospital of Nice, and President of the association IA (Innovation Alzheimer—Affect—Autism). His areas of expertise include behavioural and psychological symptoms with a focus on motivation disorders, the evaluation and treatment of apathy, and the use of new technologies for diagnosis and stimulation in neuropsychiatric pathologies.
