D ELIVERY TO BOATS , BUSINESSES , AND RESIDENCES www.visitnortheastharbor.com Northeast Harbor Port Directory - 1 • C ALL BBQ E XCHANGES AT AREA BUSINESSES FOR LOCATIONS

Publisher’s Welcome Welcome to Northeast Harbor! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, museum listings, church services, maps of Northeast Harbor, Cranberry Islands, Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor as well as a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for visitors and residents alike.

We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout the state. Our sincere wish is that you enjoy your time on Mount Desert Island, and thank you for reading the Northeast Harbor Port Directory.

Our area (and world) looks quite different from a couple of years ago. While MDI, and businesses, are opening up more and more, we don’t know quite what the summer will hold. Please continue to be patient, and to follow the CDC guidelines that are in place. When making decisions about whether or not to include a Calendar of Events this year, we knew that there were too many changes happening to be able to accurately portray what would be happening even just a few weeks, much less months, in the future. Please check with the local chambers of commerce (websites listed on page 38) while you are here. And ENJOY your time in this beautiful corner of the world.

Northeast Harbor Port Directory - 5

Local Hands Reaching Out This is the fifteenth year that the Port Directories have put a spotlight on a local organization that “reaches out” - be it reaching around the world or around the corner. This year the focus is on a community-based boatbuilding program for children ages 7 to 97 situated on Little Cranberry Island, Maine. All photos in this article are used by permission of Islesford Boatworks.

The mission of Islesford Boatworks is to build opportunity, community, and a sustainable future for Maine’s working waterfront. Located on Little Cranberry Island, part of the Town of Cranberry Isles, we work with children, youth and adults to teach traditional wooden boatbuilding skills, an appreciation of forest and maritime ecology, and responsibility for maintaining the integrity and health of maritime livelihoods. All the boats we build go to serve the local community or the working waterfront.

Since its founding in 2006, Islesford Boatworks has steadily grown from a youth summer program, serving approximately 30 children, to a community organization that reaches all generations of the Cranberry Islands. We now offer a variety of ways to get involved in boatbuilding, from “wee works,” which introduces the safe use of basic tools with kids under age seven, to our sum-

mer programs for youths, young adults, and adults, to our year-round school programs, and our older volunteers who work behind the scenes or mentor our youth. As a community organization, we strive to hear and respond to the needs of our island.

In 2018, Islesford Boatworks moved into its new home on the shore, The Blue Duck. Through the wonderful support of the U.S. National Park Service, we’ve entered into a long-term lease of the building to bring our programs and services literally to Maine’s working waterfront. The Blue Duck (named after the blue duck decoy mounted on the door frame) was built around 1852 as a chandlery (marine hardware store) for the Hadlock family, who owned a thriving business that included fish wharves, smoke houses, farms, a sawmill, a store, and a small fleet of schooners. After a stint as a local history museum, a small apartment, storage facility, and public restrooms, by the 2010s, the old store had seen better times. Doors and windows were boarded up and debris and junk had accumulated in the attic and rooms. Through the generous support and encouragement of the community, Islesford Boatworks was able to renovate the Blue Duck and breathe new life into the old island store. Moving into the Blue Duck has allowed Islesford Boatworks to grow into a

more established, community organization. We have reestablished a chandlery, honoring the original function of the site, while also running programs for youth and adults.

This summer, all of our programs will work together to launch two boats to add to our working waterfront. The first is a 15-foot coastal dory for a local lobsterman to use to set fish traps, catching bait to support island lobstering. The second boat will be a “Victor White” skiff, a project to continue the legacy of a Great Cranberry boatbuilder by copying an original boat that was nearly rotted away and would soon have been lost forever. Working under the guidance and sponsorship of Ed Gray of Newman and Gray Boatyard, and relying on his years of boatbuilding expertise, we are particularly excited about the ways that building the Victor White skiff preserves an island craft while connecting our youth Cont’d. p. 10 to the islands’ history and heritage.

We’ve engaged over 1500 individual students and volunteers in our 15 years of building boats. That number is both humbling and encouraging. It makes us so thankful for what we’ve accomplished but leaves us eager to do more, to reach a wider audience, and to continue our mission of building opportunity, community, and a future for Maine’s working waterfront. If you’d like to learn more or support our organization, please check out our website at: islesfordboatworks.org – or stop by the Blue Duck!

Hunters Beach Trail - 0.6 mile, out and back, moderate walking trail Directions: Take Route 3 from downtown Bar Harbor and head through Otter Creek. Shortly after the Blackwoods Campground entrance and the trailhead for South Ridge Trail of Cadillac, you will take a left onto Cooksey Drive. Very shortly after turning onto Cooksey Drive, you’ll see a little parking lot and trailhead on the left. Hunter’s Beach The trail is short and sweet, © Katie Dyer but it leads to one of Acadia’s precious hidden gems! Perfect walking paths, rocks and roots, foot bridges and more. The trail eventually meets up and follows the Hunters Brook as it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is comprised of various sized rounded and smoothed by the ocean pebbles of all kinds. Enjoy the solitude of the little cove, watch the waves, skip some rocks, and enjoy nature and the Park in a lesser known spot. Perfect for hikers of all ages and abilities.

Vegan Broccoli “Cheese” Soup

Ingredients: 4 cups vegetable stock 1-2/3 cup carrot, chopped 1-1/2 cup raw potato, chopped 1 cup onion chunks 1/2 cup RAW cashews 4 cups fresh broccoli, in bite-size pieces (or 1 lb. frozen) Instructions: Cook the carrot, potato, and onion in the vegetable stock until softened, about 15 minutes.

Put the raw cashews into the blender and add stock and cooked vegetables. Blend for five minutes. If you can’t add all the stock and cooked vegetables in at one time, divide it into batches, making sure to blend each batch for five minutes. Add salt to taste. Meanwhile, cook the broccoli until crisptender. I cook it in the microwave for about 2-1/2 minutes. Reheat the broth and add the broccoli.

The Port Directory Featured Hike Gorham Mountain and Beehive by Katie Dyer

Gorham Mountain Trail; South to North, optional Beehive Loop, walk back along Ocean Path (Park Loop Road) Elevations: 525’ (Gorham) and 539’ (Beehive)

All photos in this section are © Katie Dyer

Directions to Trail Head: You’ll want to get on the Park Loop Road and drive to the Sand Beach Ticket Station. You WILL need a pass. You can enter the Park Loop Road from Schooner Head Road or from the Sieur de Monts entrance. Once through the gate you will drive a little over a mile, the Gorham parking lot will have a sign, and it will be on your right.

I love Gorham Mountain. It is one of the most popular hikes in Acadia National Park; for the fact that the mountain is as close to the beautiful coastline as it can get, perfect for catching that ocean breeze on a hot Summer day. The trails of Gorham Mountain are not too hard, but not too easy, and there are some amazing sights along the way. During the Summer months, you can catch a frog in the stream. There are caves to walk through, over and around. An exposed rock face that overlooks the ocean, Sand Beach and Ocean Drive. A breathtaking glimpse of “The Hive”, and the brave hearted hikers climbing carefully up the cliff-side. Gorham Mountain trail goes up, down, this way and that; never a dull moment. And, if you listen carefully, you can hear the waves crashing on the beach, children squealing with delight, and a distant thundering at a famous hole. 32 - Northeast Harbor Port Directory

There are a number of trails in Acadia National Park that are known worldwide for their intricately and carefully engineered stone pathways and stairs and iron rung ladders. There is a plaque along the Gorham Mountain trail that honors one of Acadia’s Pathmakers, Waldron Bates. You can read more about him on page 36. Many of Acadia’s mountainsides would be inaccessible if it weren’t for his, and other pathmaker’s, ingenuity of stone and iron work along cliffs. The original pathmakers’ work has outlasted generations, with a little help every year from the many ANP trail maintainers and volunteers.

From the Gorham parking lot, start out on the Gorham Mountain Trail. In 0.2 mile the trail will split, each option meets back up in 0.3 mile each. For a steeper hike with a cool cave and old sea stack, take the Cadillac Cliffs Trail. Any trail, for that matter, with the word “cliff” attached calls my name. It’s an adventurous route! The old sea stack along this trail is a sight to see. The sea level surrounding Mount Desert Island has changed many times throughout its geological history. Evidence of this history can be seen along the Cadillac Cliffs Trail where an old sea cave and sea stack can be found. These geological features were carved out and shaped Sea Sea Stack Stack along along the the trail. trail. by the ocean waves and erosion. The sea level has since receded further to where it is today. In another 0.4 mile, after the Canoe, Kayak and cliff trail and the regular mountain trail Paddleboard Rentals re-connect, you will reach the summit on Great Long Pond. of Gorham Mountain. continue north on the Gorham Mountain Trail from the summit.

If you would like to add Beehive to this hike, the trailhead is 0.8 mile down from the Gorham summit. This trail is not for the faint of heart; with iron bridges, railings and ladders galore! It is, after all, Acadia’s very own jungle-gym. A very popular destination for the summer traveling folk, plan on hiking this trail in the early morning or late afternoon for less congestion. You are very quickly rewarded with the first wonderful view of Sand Beach. The view keeps getting better and better the higher you go. From the trail, and especially during the off season, the little Sand Beach cove looks so serene. You can hear the waves rolling in, what a peaceful sound to listen to while enjoying the day and hike. Once at the summit for Beehive, the trail continues down the back toward The Bowl, a small pond between mountains that was carved out by the moving glaciers. You can skip The Bowl and take the first trail The The Bowl Bowl back to the Gorham Mountain Trail, or you can add The Bowl loop to your hike. The Bowl is an excellent summer spot for catching frogs, giving your feet a cool break in the water, or even taking a little swim (watch out for leeches.) Once back on the Gorham Mountain trail, continue back to the Park Loop Road and enjoy the walk back to the Gorham parking lot along the Ocean Path. You can stop at Sand Beach and watch the waves, or brave the freezing cold water, or take a pit stop to watch Thunder Hole, and cool down after your big hike with the ocean breeze.

On a giant boulder at the junction of the Gorham Mountain and Cadillac Cliffs Trails is a commemorative bronze plaque that is passed by three or four hundred hikers every summer day. How many of them wonder about the story of the man on the plaque, Waldron Bates?

History Bostonian. Harvard graduate. Lawyer. Pathmaker. Pathmaker? How and why did Mr. Bates become known as a pathmaker? Bates began exploring Mount Desert Island in the 1880s during family trips. An active sportsman, he wrote articles for fish and game publications, toured Yellowstone Park in 1889, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Kebo Valley Golf Club. Like many others at the turn of the century (and today as well), he came to love this island and dedicated much of his life to making it better. Nowhere is this more evident than in his energetic devotion to hiking trails.

From 1900 to 1909, Bates was chairman of the Path Committee of the Bar Harbor Village Improvement Association (VIA). Beginning in the 1890s, VIAs in each of the four island towns created most of the island’s hiking trail system we know today. Twenty-five miles of trails were added under Bates’ leadership, among them the Giant Slide, Canon Brook, Gorham Mountain, and Cadillac Cliffs Trails. The hiking map you use today is a direct descendant of the very first comprehensive island path map published in 1896; the lead author of that map was Waldron Bates. Trails

We don’t know if Bates worked on trails himself (local men were usually hired), but we do know he wrote the first trail handbook for those men, establishing construction and maintenance standards. One standard he developed was for building cairns in a unique style we now call the Bates cairn. Acadia National Park is re-establishing this simple and historic style of cairn on the many east-side trails developed by this trail pioneer.

You can help us recover and retain this little piece of history. Please do not add to or build cairns or other rock objects. With thousands more hikers today than in Bates’ era, tampering with rocks is damaging to the mountain environment. Leaving rocks where you find them preserves thin and fragile mountain soil, vegetation, and a more natural landscape. Waldron Bates died tragically in 1909 at age 52 in a train accident, but his legacy of paths continues. So the next time you hike the Gorham Mountain Trail, tip your hat to the pathmaker on the plaque, Waldron Bates, and say thanks. 36 - Northeast Harbor Port Directory

The Thuya Garden and surrounding land is a wonderful blend of semi-formal English border beds and indigenous eastern Maine woodlands situated on a granite hillside overlooking Northeast Harbor. Visitors by sea can tie up at Asticou Terraces Landing and walk up the 1/4–mile Asticou Terrace Trail to the garden and lodge, passing the Joseph H. Curtis Memorial and enjoying the views from several lookouts along the way. Parking is available at the landing and at the top of Thuya Drive. The beauty of the Azalea Garden changes and evolves throughout the year. A flowering cherry tree heralds the start of the season in mid-May, followed by azaleas and rhododendrons in many hues in late May through June. July blooms include Japanese iris, smoke bush, rosebay rhododendron, and the fragrant sweet azalea. August is quiet and serene, accented by blooming water lilies, and in September and October the garden glows with the colors of fall.

Yes ... a lot of the granite you see on MDI truly is pink! The pink coloration is due to the high potassium feldspar content, a mineral commonly found in granite. 40 - Northeast Harbor Port Directory

© Margaret Scheid / Reprinted with Permission Text and illustrations are from Discovering Acadia - A Guide for Young Naturalists Please note: We are unable to use the entire Tidepool section here, but this is a PORTION of the wealth of information found in this book. Check out the local libraries to see the entire book.

Call us “winkles”. Have you seen any of us yet? We’re just about everywhere in the tidepools. Being vegetarians, we eat plants, especially algae (al-jee) that we scrape from rocks with our radula (file-like tongue). You can tell us apart fromt he carnivorous dog whelks by our teardrop shaped opening. LOOK CAREFULLY! If you touch us, we’ll retreat into our shell. All you’ll see is our door-like operculum (o-pur-cue-lum) which keeps us moist and protected.

Limpets are vegetarian snails, too. Because of the shape of our shell, we are also called Chinaman’s Hats! We have one shell and no protective operculum like the periwinkles. Instead, our “foot” acts like a suction cup, holding us tightly to rocks. This keeps us from drying out at low tide or getting knocked around at high tide! If you can manage to slide us from our rock, turn us over and meet us in person! (And scoot us sideways; don’t try to pry us up — it hurts!)

Look for us under rockweeds and boulders, hiding from hungry gulls! Remember to pick us up from the rear, far from our claws!
