DELIVERY TO BOATS, BUSINESSES, AND RESIDENCES www.visitsouthwestharbor.com.com Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory - 1 BBQ EXCHANGES AT AREA BUSINESSES . CALL FOR LOCATIONS
Publisher’s Welcome Welcome to Southwest Harbor and Tremont — the “quiet side”! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, ferry schedules, museum listings, church services, maps of Southwest Harbor (including Bass Harbor and Tremont), and a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for the visitors and residents alike. We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout the state. Our sincere wish is that you enjoy your time on Mount Desert Island, and thank you for reading the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory. This is not the Port Directory I had envisioned a few short months ago. This is Maine’s 200th birthday, and there were going to be special events. You will notice that there is no Calendar of Events this year. Everything is evolving very quickly; many events have been canceled and too many businesses are unsure of their future. If a business requests masks, allows only a certain number of people, and/or is out of items you were planning on getting, please remember to be kind and patient. We all want our locals and visitors to stay healthy and happy!

Things to See and Do This area is an outdoor lover’s playground! Biking ... Hiking ... Canoeing... the Quiet Side and Acadia have it all! And it is easy to socially distance while enjoying the great outdoors! You’ll find an article on one of the many bike rides on the following pages. In addition, there is a Hike/Nature Walk starting on page 36. Something for everyone! Acadia National Park protects the natural beauty of the highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coastline of the United States, an abundance of habitats, and a rich cultural heritage. With 3.5 million visits a year, it’s one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the United States. Visitors enjoy 27 miles of historic motor roads, 158 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads.

Featured “Bike Hike” Long Pond Fire Road
Approximately 5.5 miles, with an additional 7 miles optional This “bike hike” was initially featured in 2009 All photos in this section are © Bayside Graphics unless otherwise noted.
Before taking this bike ride, or for that matter ANY bike ride on the carriage paths, please familiarize yourselves with the “Rules of the Road” found on page 15. From Southwest Harbor, take Route 102 south all the way around to Pretty Marsh, 10.5 miles. The picnic area is on the left and is where you should park. The Pretty Marsh Picnic Area is 3.5 miles north from where the Seal Cove Road meets Route 102 in Seal Cove. Going south from Somesville, take a right at the blinking yellow light next to the fire station. Follow Route 102, 5.9 miles to the picnic area on the right. After parking at the picnic area, you will start biking ... take a right back on to Route 102 and a left onto the Long Pond Fire Road in 1/10th mile. The Long Pond Fire Road has a smooth gravel surface much like the carriage paths on the eastern side of Mount Desert Island. Unlike the carriage paths, motor vehicles are allowed on fire roads. The speed limit, however, is 15 mph, so any vehicles you do encounter should be traveling slowly. Nevertheless, it would be wise to stay on the right and obey the speed limit as well. A little caveat before we begin: This bike ride is considered “family friendly” ... which depends on your family. Cycle 2014 red 4/24/14 7:36 PM Page 1 ISW must admit, the hills were challenging for this over-50,

haven’t-been-bike-riding-much-in-the-last-year-and-a-half body in the early spring. But after shaking off the winter “rust,” it wasn’t so bad. And for anyone who does any bike riding on a regular basis, this should be “a piece of cake!” The first 1.75 miles is moderately hilly through dense pine forest. The road descends to the western shore of Long Pond. There are places here to sit by the pond, have a snack, or even go for a swim. Duck Duck Pond Pond
Continuing on, you will climb moderately away from the shore and back into the hilly, dense forest. About a mile further on, there is a right hand turn and a short descent to the shore of Duck Pond, which is boggy with little open water. If you go at the right time of year ... and the right time of day ... you will hear the bullfrogs announcing their presence. Also depending on when you take this bike ride, you can enjoy the water lilies, or the lily pads. About 1.75 miles from the shores of Long Pond there is an intersection. steep climb to the top of Pine Hill. This is another good place to take a break, have a snack, or just explore the woods. We didn’t notice any views from the top of Pine Hill, but you might get a peek through the foliage of the surrounding countryside, a pond, or even the ocean. Hodgdon Pond
Descending back to the Long Pond Fire Road, bear right and continue through the woods. About a half mile past Pine Hill, you will travel over a small bridge that crosses the outlet of Hodgdon Pond into Seal Cove Pond. Another half mile brings you to the end of the Fire Road which comes out on a paved road. Bear left on this road and shortly ahead you will reach Route 102.
Turn right on Route 102 remembering that this is a state road with no bike lane. Vehicles probably will be traveling 40 – 50 mph here so use caution. The road passes through wood and a few residences, generally uphill. Just after you cross into Mt. Desert, you will pass where you began on the Long Pond Fire Road on the right and shortly after the Pretty Marsh Picnic Area will be on the left. Be careful crossing the road here as there is a curve in the road with limited visibility. 368 State Hwy. 3 Bar Harbor 04609 A more serious cyclist seeking a longer trip can cross Route 102 on to the (On Dreamwood Hill Cape Road instead of turning right to across from Mainely Meat return to Pretty Marsh. industry, along most of it. Cape Road is paved at the beginning and end, with an unpaved section of a mile or so in the middle. There are many small ups and downs along the way so you will get a workout. Towards the end of the Cape Road, you will come alongside Seal Cove which is very pretty. There is a nice waterside park here with picnic tables. Shortly after Seal Cove, you will come back out on Route 102. Turn left and travel past Seal Cove Pond. Riding about 2 miles will bring you to where you crossed Route 102 to take the Cape Road. Continue on about another mile to the Pretty Marsh Picnic Area on the left. Please refer to the previous paragraph referring to biking on Route 102. This additional trip on Cape Road adds about 7 more miles to your trip.

When Biking or Hiking on the Carriage Paths, Follow the
Rules of the Road
• Stay to the right. • Pass carefully to the left. • Yield to others. Don’t obstruct the entire carriage road when you ride or walk. • Be prepared to stop. Stay in control. • Gravel surfaces are loose, so quick stops are dangerous. • Let sight distance, traffic, and conditions govern speed. • Use a map. Sign posts at carriage road intersections have numbers. • Dress for the weather and carry water. • Horses can occasionally be unpredictable. Move to the side and let them pass. Do not startle them. • Cyclists: wear a helmet; and when approaching others from behind, call out or use your bell. • Pets must be leashed. Leashes must be 6 ft. or less. • Leave no trace. Carry out what you carry in.

The Town of Tremont started out named Mansell, Maine. Its name was changed to Tremont which was French meaning three mountains, encompassing Bernard, Beech, and Mansell Mountains. The town of Tremont consists of the villages Bass Harbor, Gotts Island, Seal Cove, and West Tremont. Settled in 1762, it was incorporated as a town in 1848. Tremont’s location afforded it accessibility to resources valued by the early occupying nations. Local fishing and boat building are still practiced in the shops and along its shores as they were in previous generations. www.visitsouthwestharbor.com.com

Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory - 31
Local Hands Reaching Out This is the fourteenth year that the Port Directories have put a spotlight on a local organization that “reaches out” - be it reaching around the world or around the corner. With food insecurity reaching so many people, this year we are focusing on the two different food pantries on Mount Desert Island. This article features the Westside Food Pantry. All photos in this article are used by permission of Westside Food Pantry.
You live on the west side of Mount Desert Island. A big part of your economic reality is that your best income is seasonal summer. The Maine winters can be pretty fierce and your household budget is strained with heating bills and school expenses. What do you do if in February it comes down to the awful choice: to eat, or to heat? For thirty years, the Westside Food Pantry has responded to issues of food security among our neighbors on the west side of MDI. We began to address these needs with a familiar model of the “Food Pantry”. Mostly non-perishable foods and a small amount of frozen and refrigerated food was distributed to our neighbors twice a week from the basement of St. John Episcopal Church in Southwest Harbor. When space became a barrier Annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Distribution to meeting the growing need, the Pantry and the Southwest Food Mart got together and collaborated to distribute and redeem food vouchers at various local west side markets. And since then, the Westside Food Pantry has opened its doors twice during the months of November through April to distribute food vouchers to our neighbors to be redeemed for food and household goods (alcohol, tobacco, and gasoline excepting). The voucher approach has proven successful in meeting the needs of those who need assistance and in helping realize efficiencies in the distribution of that help. Our criteria for helping is only that you need food assistance and that you are one of our neighbors—that is you live in one of the three towns we serve: Southwest Harbor, Tremont, and Mount Desert. Period. To those who register as a neighbor, and need help,
32 - Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory
www.visitsouthwestharbor.com.com
the amount of assistance is determined by household size and make-up. A household of two adults and two children is eligible for $170 in food vouchers per month. In the six months that the Pantry operates each season we have distributed and redeemed up to $110,000 in food vouchers. That translates into over 2,700 neighbors from 1,200 households served in a distribution season of six months. We have not eliminated the causes or difficulties of food security, but as neighbors we have taken on the role of helping those of us who need extra help when and where it is needed most—in our neighborhood. We take this “neighborhood” thing seriously! While we address the food security needs of our neighbors locally, the boundaries of the neighborhood stretch across the country when it comes to supporting this work. Our financial contributors are neighbors from near and away. Those we call neighbor during the “season” don’t forget this west side neighborhood when they are away in the “off-season.” The “away” and “near” neighbors, our local businesses, churches, civic organizations, and town budgets provide the funding for our work, and in a recent year up to $140,000. And over 80% of that funding comes from individual neighbor donations. This is what we proudly call neighbors helping neighbors. 2020 brought new challenges to our Pantry neighborhood. By the end of March, we were staring into the face of a world-wide pandemic. This event has turned the world upside-down—including the work of the Westside Food Pantry. Our distribution operations are based on face-to-face interaction with our neighbors. This, however, was no longer a safe way to get our help to the oftenvulnerable population who needs it. We had to invent a whole new “safe distribution protocol” utilizing walk-up windows and far fewer volunteers. We did it! You can see how it works at our website: westsidefoodpantry.org. When times are hard and uncertain, we often look to our neighbors—to see who needs help and for our own help. When this pandemic became the threat that it is, the neighborhood responded. In a few short weeks over $50,000 in unsolicited donations came forth to support expanding the Pantry distribution season into the summer months. Now the Westside Food Pantry is continuing its tradition of neighbors helping neighbors when it is truly needed most. For 30 years! ~ A Cooperative Sharing of the Westside Communities and St. Andrew & St. John Episcopal Church ~ P.O. Featured Nature Walk Ship Harbor Nature Trail
Beginning and Ending at the Ship Harbor parking lot on Maine State Route 102A. Distance – 1.3 miles This Nature Walk was initially featured in 2012 All photos in this section are © Bayside Graphics unless othwise noted.
We wanted to offer an activity this year that is appropriate for anyone. While the Ship Harbor Nature Trail might not be challenging or long enough for the ambitious, experienced hiker, it is perfect for families with young children and their grandparents too. And anyone, regardless of their hiking experience, will enjoy the seashore and the interesting harbor. Moreover, bring a yummy picnic and make a day of it. Ship Harbor is a nature trail with several marvelous eco-systems to explore and discover. Also, the story goes that smugglers would slip into the protected cove at high water and tie trees to their topmasts to hide from the English revenuers.

The Ship Harbor Nature Trail is in the shape of a figure eight with a tail on the bottom. You are currently on the tail, which winds gently on a well-maintained footway. In .1 miles, you arrive at the bottom of the eight. We will bear left here and stay on the left side. For the next .2 miles, the trail travels through an interesting spruce and pine forest and then descends to the next intersection. Staying to the right and ascending moderately for just a bit, the trail becomes rockier and the forest opens up. In .3 miles you arrive at the ocean’s edge. The trail bears to the right here, but we recommend that you explore the beautiful pink granite shore and tidal pools. © Katie Dyer While the shore is rocky, it’s also rather smooth and flat so exploring and venturing closer to the water is quite safe. Just be aware, the darker rocks at water’s edge can be slippery. Continued p. 38

Looking out over the ocean you will see Great Gott Island closest to you and a little to the left; to the right and a little further back is Placenta Island. Between and behind those two is Black Island. Further off and right to left are Swan’s Island, Long Island (Frenchboro), Great Duck and Little Duck Islands and Great Cranberry. If you did bring a picnic, here is a nice place to enjoy it. But if it’s too early to eat, there are other good places further on. Continuing on to the right, the trail alternates between the edge of the woods and along the rocky shore. Turning away from the open ocean, the trail parallels the channel leading into the harbor. Footing is a little more difficult here as rocks and large roots cross the trail. During the next .2 miles, after crossing a few boardwalks, a side trail leads to the left down to a beautiful pink stone beach. This is such a lovely spot. The beach juts out into Ship Harbor at the point where the narrowing tidal channel opens up to the calmer harbor. The beach is basically a huge pile of smooth, round, pink granite stones. This is another excellent place to rest, explore, eat and play. Once you are back at the top of the side trail, you will turn left and pass by a cove on the side of Ship Harbor. Once parallel with the head of this cove, you will come to the intersection that is the middle of the figure eight. Stay to the left and work your way around the rest of the cove staying close to the shore most of the time. The trail has become smooth and

easy again as you proceed another .2 miles. Along the trail, you will notice many trees that have been blown over by strong ocean storms. Most of these trees are spruce, which have shallow root systems. This contributes to their tendency to blow down in a strong wind. You will also notice that some of these fallen trees do not die. If any roots remain in the soil, they grow a branch that becomes a new tree trunk. At the last intersection, bear left and hike back to the parking lot. Apparently, there is an unmarked trail about 10 yards from the left side of the parking area. This trail winds through the grass down to the head of the harbor. We invite you to try to find this trail and take in the view from that vantage point. We hope you enjoy your trip to Ship Harbor. If you would like to share your trip with us, or make suggestions, please write to Bayside Graphics, PO Box 55, Mount Desert, ME 04660 or email us at baysidegraphics@roadrunner.com.
