Leleu: A Renaissance

The house of Leleu rose to prominence in the 1920s during the Art Déco period, and became known for the ornate classicism of its richly refined furniture and lavish interiors. In the PostWar

increasingly effervescent time, marked for Leleu by projects of great magnitude, including the majestic ocean liner SS France, a flagship of the French art de vivre for which the country’s finest artists and designers were called upon, and the Skanès villa of Tunisia’s thenpresident, Habib Bourguiba. By the time the Leleu patriarch, Jules, died in 1961, the design house was enjoying a true renaissance that paid tribute to its legacy while looking toward the future.

the

villa

acquired in 1957 by South A merican financier Robert Greif. The vast proportions of the space —a great hall, a grand salon and a living room opening onto a loggia— called for pieces of monumental scale. Leleu’s interiors for Médy Roc have been referred to as “a celebration of French savoir-faire,” and they definitively launched the company’s evolving style into a new era. The enormous patinated and gilt metal console and dining table, both with eglomisé glass tops, anchor the great hall. Lie-de-vin lacquer vitrines rest on patinated metal bases with gilt accents. Mahogany cabinets glim mer with mother of pearl marquetry and gilt-bronze handles, a proud reissuing of a 1930s design that once again underscores the Leleu children’s reverence for their family legacy. Featured is some of the most illustrious craftsmanship of the time: tapestries from Aubusson, Beka lacquer by Saïn et Tambuté, and metal work by Asselbur and Granec. The inimitable style of Paule Leleu is everywhere: in the joyous motifs and glorious colors that adorn furniture façades, tabletops, cushions and, especially, exquisite wool carpets. A sofa, together with its four matching club chairs, is emblazoned with her signature villa for more than half a century before the collection was finally sold is a testament to the timeless beauty of Leleu’s work. Médy Roc remains im mortalized in several films, including Georges Lautner’s

which

starred

successful entrepreneur, who made his name through Linguaphone, a popular language learning program taught through vinyl records and cassette tapes, Frilet was also the first person to import products such as linoleum and contact lenses to France, and had been a chef de réseaux during the French Resistance. In addition to its extraordinary beauty and breadth, the Frilet collection is remarkable in that Mr. Frilet empowered André Leleu to purchase on his behalf significant Leleu pieces of previous decades, many from as early as 1948. These include a substantial selection from the legendary collection of the Comtesse Douieb de Lonlay, among them a pair of shagreen com modes with coral-red lacquered tops and an important feux d’artifice com mode and pair of cabinets with mother-of-pearl and ebony inlay.
