MORPETH

MORPETH AT A GLANCE

Morpeth is part of Wonnarua Country, and has a rich Aboriginal and European heritage.

• Maitland’s Destination Management Plan identifies Morpeth as a priority hub. The Plan sets out programming, project and infrastructure actions that will make Morpeth a unique ‘hipster heritage’ destination.

During the 19th century Morpeth was one of the most important river ports in New South Wales, opening up the development of the Hunter Region. Today Morpeth is one of Maitland’s premier tourism destinations, playing a key role in attracting visitors to our city. It is part of the National Trust, classified as a living museum with beautifully preserved heritage buildings. Morpeth is highly desirable suburb. The high retention rate of residents reflects a strong connection to place. With new housing stock coming online in neighbouring suburbs, Morpeth will play an even more important role in the future.

• Morpeth has a strong tenancy mix. Essential services such as supermarket, doctor, pharmacy and a post office underpin regular visitation. Unique retail and independent traders, including antiques, fashion, homewares, art, food and beverage, contribute to the character of the village. • At the last census in 2016, Morpeth was home to 1,403 people. • Morpeth is a favourite stop for day trippers and overnighters. ‘It must be Morpeth’ Business Association estimates that Morpeth attracts in excess of 400,000 visitors each year.

Council supports local business by: • Facilitating marketing campaigns that boost awareness of the region and its businesses. • Running a successful program of events and activations to foster community connection and drive visitation to Morpeth. • Investing in key infrastructure projects to enhance liveability and access. • Providing networking and professional development opportunities to the business community. • Connecting businesses with specialist advice, news and funding opportunities. • Developing the policy frameworks to encourage sustainable economic growth in Maitland and its key suburbs like Morpeth.
