INCORRIGIBLE OPTIMIST: A POLITICAL CAREER GARETH EVANS Gareth Evans was a Cabinet Minister in the Hawke-Keating governments for 13 years, including as Foreign Minister from 1988-96. He led the Brussels-based International Crisis Group from 2000-09, and is now Chancellor and Honorary Professorial Fellow at the Australian National University. He co-chaired major international commissions on mass atrocity crimes and nuclear weapons, has won many national and international awards, and has written or edited 13 books, most recently Incorrigible Optimist: A Political Memoir. Gareth Evans will give a compelling insight into the highs and lows of his public life as a student activist, civil libertarian, law reformer, industry minister, international policymaker, educator and politician.

ACCIDENTAL FEMINISTS JANE CARO Jane Caro grew up in Australia in the 1960s and 1970s – the heyday of second wave feminism. In her book, Accidental Feminists, she tells the story of the everyday women of her era, a generation of women who revolutionised the world. Jane says that although they rarely identified as feminists and didn’t intend to change to world, they were the first in history to be in paid work for most of their lives and have financial independence. Jane Caro is an author, novelist, broadcaster, columnist, advertising writer and social commentator. She appears regularly in the media commentating on feminism and education and was the recipient of the Walkley Award for Women’s Leadership in 2018.

CHALLENGING STEREOTYPES MICHAEL MOHAMMED AHMAD Powerful, passionate and provocative, Michael Mohammed Ahmad challenges Australia’s perception of multicultural identities. His writing explores tribalism, underpinned by the potential for understanding and change. His first novel, The Tribe, introduced readers to the complex family life of protagonist Bani Adam, a young boy from a religious Lebanese Muslim family in western Sydney. His new book The Lebs is a resonant novel that also tackles the issue of what it is like to be a Lebanese –Australian. Michael Mohammed Ahmad is an Arab-Australian Writer, editor, teacher and community arts worker. He is the founder and director of Sweatshop, a literacy movement in Western Sydney devoted to empowering culturally and linguistically diverse artists through creative writing.

FAMILY TENSIONS MICHAEL SALA Set in Newcastle with vivid descriptions, Michael Sala’s books, The Last Thread and The Restorer, tackle family tensions and the psychological and physical damage that can result. Based on his own life, Sala’s moving first novel The Last Thread won the NSW Premier’s Award for New Writing in 2013 and was the regional winner of the Commonwealth Book Prize in the same year. The Restorer, described as powerful, poetic and extraordinary, was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2017. Originally written as a screen play The Tattooist of Auschwitz is Heather Morris debut novel. BUILDING BRIDGES More than practical structures of concrete and steel, bridges can be inspiring and beautiful emblems of our cultural heritage. When the first Belmore Bridge was opened more than 150 years ago, it was an important development in Maitland’s history. Bridges also are a symbol of connection linking communities and overcoming boundaries. With a river running through the centre of Maitland, bridges are a feature of local life. This event will explore how bridges have been an integral part of Maitland’s social and commercial history.

STEAM VISIONS This event will explore the significance of the South Maitland Railway, one of Australia’s great pioneering enterprises and its role in the nation’s industrial and social development. First-hand accounts of the logistics, challenges and celebrations associated with the ongoing restoration of two of the last 10 class steam engines remaining in the world will be presented, along with a tour of the Maitland Rail Museum. HUNTER WINE: A HISTORY The Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine region, so its history and heritage are integral to understanding not only how wine has developed but how the local region has evolved. Australian leading wine historian and co-author of Hunter Wine: A History, Dr Julie McIntyre traces the Hunter wine industry from 1828, uncovering the historical and technological developments that have culminated in today’s thriving local community. EXPLORING ABORIGINAL ASTRONOMY Aboriginal people have been described as ‘the world’s first astronomers’. Long before the Greeks and Romans, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people developed a number of practical ways to observe the sun, moon and stars to inform navigation, calendars and predict weather. The unique skills and perspectives of Aboriginal people are explored, particularly with regard to traditional knowledge of astronomy and the part it plays in Aboriginal narratives.

MEMORY AND LANDSCAPES HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPH EXHIBITION Personal memories can be unexpectedly awakened by a place, a landscape or an object. A AMORELLE YEAR INDEMPSTER MY LIFE Maitland’s Citizen of the Year, Amorelle Dempster, is a woman of many passions - slow food, cooking, the environment and serving the local community to name a few. We reminisce over the past year and find out about this remarkable and energetic woman. Amorelle is Leader of Slow Food Hunter Valley and the Australian Councillor for Slow Food International. She is the champion of local farmers, being instrumental in starting the Slow Food Earth Markets at The Levee and provides a kitchen and food rescue passion for a community food program, which provides over 150 meals for the disadvantaged each week.
