MAYOR’S MESSAGE
With the winter chill behind us, we can now look forward to more beautiful weather ahead.
We’ve seen a lot of action on some of our big projects these last few months, including the commencement of bulky waste collection, continued road improvements, and upgrades at Harold Gregson Reserve in Central Maitland. This project is in the final stages and I’m sure our community will be keen to start using the facilities there, including a new playground and event lawn.
Our new General Manager, Jeff Smith is settling in very well at Council after taking on the role in July. From day one, Jeff has hit the ground running, getting out to meet our community and getting to know our organisation in detail so he can help improve our services.
There’s also plenty brewing in the event space, with tickets on sale for Bitter & Twisted which returns Saturday 4 November. Before that, we’ll celebrate our next flagship event, Maitland Riverlights, from Tuesday 3 to Saturday 7 October. We hope to see you there.
It is an honour and a privilege to have the opportunity to lead Maitland City Council operations as the new General Manager.
I thank our mayor and councillors for trusting me to lead the operation of this organisation. I would also like to acknowledge my predecessor, David Evans, for his incredible service to this city over the last 50 years. He leaves an incredible legacy and big shoes to fill.
It is evident that our staff are our greatest asset, and I look forward to working with them to drive a culture of customer focus, continuous improvement, and accountability.
Maitland is an evolving and growing city. This growth comes with many opportunities and challenges, and I will focus on ensuring our Council seeks to balance both shaping our future and respecting our past in the right way. Not everyone will agree on how we best do that however I am committed to ongoing engagement and listening to the views of our community.
Thank you to all the community members who have already welcomed me to the role. I look forward to leading our team for many years as we deliver valued services and improved infrastructure to our growing community.
Philip

NEW COMMUNITY CENTRES COMING TO CHISHOLM AND TENAMBIT
The next planning phase for two new community centres in Tenambit and Chisholm has begun.
Following extensive community consultation in 2022, design concepts were developed for both sites in August. We then held two public information sessions to share and discuss these designs with interested community members.
The new Tenambit Community Centre will replace the existing Tenambit Hall, while Chisholm Community Centre will be a new build on Heritage Drive.
The construction of both centres is due to begin in 2024. You can view the concept designs at mait.city/HaveYourSay
ROAD WORK AND FOOTPATH UPDATES
Upgrades along Athel D’Ombrain Drive in Central Maitland continue with kerb, gutter and underground drainage works now complete and new footpaths laid near Bent Street. Road pavement works and embankment widening are taking place throughout September.
Footpath works have been completed at Lochinvar Oval with new paths laid, and footpath refurbishments have wrapped up along Lawes Street, East Maitland between George and William streets. Drainage works have been taking place around Day Street and Melbourne Street in East Maitland to make the area more flood resilient. Works include opening the drainage channel and installing an additional pipe and flood flap adjacent to East Maitland train station.
