WINTER 2022

KEY POINTS OF THE ANNUAL BUDGET

$163.2m

THE CONTRIBUTION OF YOUR RATES

annual budget 2022/23

$29.2m

record annual infrastructure spending 2022/23

$780m

program set for the next four years

For each dollar Council spends, only 55c comes from rates. While rates are an important way to fund services and infrastructure important to you, a large portion of the money we spend comes from other sources like grants, developer contributions and user fees.

WHAT WE’RE GETTING DONE To see everything we’re getting done this year and into the next four years, have a look at the Delivery Program and Operational Plan at maitland.nsw.gov.au/ delivery-program HINT: Head to page 41 to see everything that’s happening. MAYOR’S MESSAGE We have a plan in place for the next 12 months and into the next four years that’s been developed in consultation with you. Over the next year, some fantastic projects and services are on the way, plus record infrastructure spending with a big focus on roads and recreation. We know that you’ve been calling for improved roads. That’s why we’re spending more than ever and will be working on 161 local road projects around the City. We also know everyone is feeling the pressure of rising costs of living, and while our costs have increased by more than 5% with inflation, we’ve managed to hold rate rises this year to just 0.7%. That’s 44c per week for the average household. I’m really proud of what we have included in the plan for the City and excited for what’s on the way in the next 12 months and beyond. Mayor Philip Penfold

FIXING AND MAINTAINING MAITLAND’S ROADS Maintenance of our 700km road network, which grows at a rate of around 11km per year, is a critical part of our planned works for the next 12 months. Read on for some road work highlights or scan the QR code on page two and head to page 98 of the Operational Plan for more details.

AND THERE’S A WHOLE LOT MORE What we’re touching on in this edition is just a small part of what Council will achieve this year, as we deliver everything from libraries to community events and place activations to customer service. Coffin Lane in Central Maitland recently activated

We’ll be sharing more about what we’re doing for Maitland in the future through Momentum and our social media.

IMPROVING RECREATION Some of the work includes the continuation of the Walka to Morpeth Shared Pathway, plus brighter and smarter LED floodlights for sportsgrounds in Morpeth, Gillieston Heights, Largs and Thornton. There will be an upgraded playground in Telarah, a new skatepark in Thornton and improvements to Maitland Park, including amenities at Robins Oval and changerooms at Maitland Aquatics Centre.

SUSTAINABILITY From what we hear from you, it’s clear that the environment is one of the most important issues in Maitland right now.

WASTE With waste, we’ll be introducing a bulky waste collection service and begin work on Maitland Resource Recovery Facility, meaning better recycling and less waste to landfill.

Community Planting Days

TREES We’ve secured budget to plant more trees than ever this year. We’ll be focusing on Community Planting Days, park and street trees, and creating and supporting more community run Landcare sites.

REMEDIATION We’re also taking the lead on the significant Hunter Estuary Coastal Management Program to improve the health of the Hunter River and working with the state government to remediate Walka Water Works.

Our upcoming Environmental Sustainability Strategy will inform how we respond to your environmental priorities. Make your mark by filling in the online survey.

MAJOR PROJECTS THIS YEAR Progress continues on more than $200 million in Council infrastructure, major projects, and community works that will support the growth of our City. YOUR NEW TOWN HALL AND MAITLAND ADMINISTRATION CENTRE

Town Hall and Maitland Administration Centre under construction

High Street in Central Maitland is transforming, with Town Hall being overhauled as the centerpiece of the street. The result will be a historical, heritage venue made modern, owned by you, and capable of hosting live music, plays, musicals, events, and more. The Maitland Administration Centre will be complete by the end of this year. This beautifully designed building will play a significant part in the revitalisation of High Street and improve our efficiency by moving staff from rented premises into one location.

NEW SPORTSGROUNDS This year we’ll be finalising the design for brand new sportsgrounds for growing populations in the west of the city.

New sportsgrounds on their way

REVAMPED HAROLD GREGSON PARK As part of the High Street transformation, we’re planning major upgrades to Harold Gregson Park, next to the Maitland Regional Athletics Facility. The enhancements are based on community consultation and will include an expanded skatepark, full sized basketball court, a nature based playspace and a stage area that can host events like markets and music.

NEW COMMUNITY FACILITIES IN THE EAST

Harold Gregson Park in Central Maitland

New community facilities coming to the east

We will construct three new community facilities in Thornton, Tenambit and Chisholm, which will cater for the growing population in these areas and provide updated, multipurpose spaces that meet the needs of those communities.
