HOLIDAY FUN

ITSY BITSY It’s all things miniature and marvellous these spring school holidays with fun activities happening at every branch. Highlights include discovering all things gross and yucky at Maitland Library when you create a germy monster or art work. Make itty bitty Lego creations or miniature comic books at Rutherford Library. Learn coding to create tiny worlds at Thornton Library with their Scratch and ScratchJr workshops or explore the magical world of fairies and elves at East Maitland and create a fairy or elf jar to take home. BEAMAFILM Stream the latest documentaries and indie feature films for free from the Maitland City Library website. All you need is your email and library card number. Beamafilm is home to over 400 award winning documentaries, independent features and festival favourites. TWISTED TALES Be entertained with unexpected twists and surprising endings to popular fairytales. This funny original production presented by Maitland Repertory Theatre features well known fairytale creatures, heroes and villains. These stories have been given new life and each one is twisted in a way that is sure to excite and amuse. Friday 6 October 2.00pm - 3.30pm Rutherford Community Centre $5

LOOK WHO’S TALKING

WORDS AT PLAY DAVID ASTLE Full time word nerd, David Astle is the crossword maker for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald as well as Wordplay Columnist with Spectrum. Gathering a large following in the SBS TV program Letters and Numbers, Astle continues to baffle devotees with his word games, crosswords and other puzzles. EXHIBITION

MAY GIBBS: CELEBRATING 100 YEARS On loan from the State Library of NSW, this exhibition pays tribute to the work of celebrated Australian children’s book author, illustrator and early environmentalist, May Gibbs. It introduces some of her best known and loved characters and stories, including her gentle but mischievous gumnut and gum blossom babies and the irrepressible brothers Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. Drawing on her personal archive, the display also explores her working process and life. 20 October - 3 November Maitland Library Free

WALLS THAT TALK

INSIDE OUT, OUTSIDE IN

PASSCHENDAELE

What do a pet portrait painter, a collector of tiny objects and Marie Antoinette have in common? These local artists will exhibit their work at the Inside Out, Outside In exhibition, along with other local emerging artists. The exhibition is an arts development initiative of Octapod. 6 November - 16 December East Maitland Library

The latest Walls That Talk installation at Maitland Library commemorates the Battle of Passchendaele. Focusing on photographs taken by Frank Hurley, it contains important images from the battle itself, along with studio portraits of local residents and ‘Maitland’s Own’ 34th Battalion. WRITING WORKSHOPS

CREATIVE WRITING MEET UP Join an informal and supportive writing group for tips on how to begin or receive advice and encouragement to continue your writing projects. With new topics each month, you will learn the basics of story structure, how to create dynamic characters, bring dialogue to life and much more. POETIC VOICES

Poems can function as connections between the creative imagination of the writer and the reader or listener. Finding your voice, using words, sounds and rhythms that identify the unique you, will allow you to connect with others. Join our group and exercise your poetic voice. LOCAL CHAMPIONS Local champions are the everyday heroes whose actions teach us about courage, strength, grace and hope. Kathryn Bennett is involved in many social causes including managing a project to provide water to schools in Vanuatu. Pat Allen gives back to the community through her volunteer work, which includes Youth Off the Streets and Palliative Care. Learn how compassion is at the heart of what these energetic locals do. FOLKLORE, FAITH AND FANTASY HANNAH KENT In her eagerly awaited follow up to Burial Rites, Hannah Kent once again illustrates her mastery in evoking an authentic voice of the past. The Good People is based on a true story of a crime committed in pre-famine Ireland and the fairy folklore that was intertwined in everyday life. Hannah Kent found significant critical and commercial success with her first novel, Burial Rites, which is currently being adapted to film. WORLD PHILOSOPHY DAY

WAS SOCRATES A TERRORIST? Socrates is put on trial by the Hunter Valley Socratic Society as they ask the question: was Socrates a terrorist? With a contemporary spin on an ancient conundrum, members of the audience will participate in determining which way the hammer falls on the fate of the world’s most famous philosopher. STORYTIME

Babies love to listen to the human voice, and what better way than through reading. Share a love of reading and language with your baby. Enjoy books, songs and rhymes for 0–2 year olds.
