ENVIRONMENT TO HELP INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS COPE WITH ACCULTURATIVE STRESS |THESIS
The purpose of this study is to understand different factors affecting the experience of international students coming to the U.S. for the first time and the stressors related to the acculturative stress experienced by them in a living environment to provide smooth acculturation. The aim of this project is to create a smooth acculturation in a student housing facility by providing freedom to either integrate, separate or assimilate into the host culture in different activities of daily life. The spaces are created for interaction during activities like cooking, eating and studying and making the process of assimilation easier for the international students.

Acculturative Stress and its Effects According to berry (2006) , acculturative stress is related to the overall process of adapting to the beliefs, practices, and values of a new culture while acculturating into a new country. Asian international students have high cultural contrast with the western cultural making them more prone to acculturative stress. Effects of acculturative stress directly or indirectly affect academic, personal and social lives of the international students.

INTEGRATION
ASSIMILATION
The experience model is divided into 4 levels which includes assimilation, integration, transition, and separation giving them freedom to choose between these strategies. The ‘transition’ level is introduced to create a pause between separation and integration for intimate connection with family and counselors to create secure attachment.

Concept Culture affects the mindset of a person. When the international students leave a culture behind to jump into a new one, it helps to create a flow in their experience. The thoughts and principles from host and new cultures merge together to form a new fabric of environment. The identity of these students needs room to absorb new ideas, thoughts and perspectives creating a fusion of personality.

Concept The retail store captures the ‘essence‘ of wide range of experiences through space, time and culture. The design represents the polaroid photographs that capture the essence of the moments in your journey through different cultures. The subtle hint of environment captured in the form of ‘bokeh‘ effect with round blotches of colours forms the concept of this store.

THE CITIZENRY | RETAIL
The brief of this project was to design an on-ground store for The Citizenry, an online retail platform for home decor. The founders of The Citizenry wanted to build a company that lets people travel the world and meet the incredible makers through beautiful modern products for their homes. The company strives to provide products that create personal spaces with a soul, a story and a purpose from around the world. Hence, the concept of this store design is based on creating memories and opportunity to learn about the uniqueness of the product’s cultural background.

Display and Workshop The display space and the workshop area merge together so that the users can be inspired to engage in the techniques used by the local artisans and create a takeaway for themselves. The display fixtures use simple and linear forms to highlight the design patterns of the fabrics displayed.

SENIOR LIVING FACILITY | HOSPITALITY
The project brief was to design a senior living facility in Savannah. The aim was to focus on making the space address the needs and challenges of seniors coming from various family backgrounds. Creating a sense of belongingness and independence by giving them an opportunity to give back to the community that they live in was the main goal of this project.
Concept
Interaction and engagement create necessary cognitive processes to alleviate loneliness. Belongingness can be created by giving the seniors a chance to contribute to the community. This instills independence among the seniors. To achieve engagement, the interior spaces flow into each other and create an interconnection between different activities.

Art and Cooking Space The art and cooking space are divided by the shelf shared between the two spaces. It also acts as a kitchen garden on the kitchen side and simultaneously creates biophilia in the art room. The cooking space is an open kitchen with multiple workstations to facilitate mini-workshops conducted by the residents for the community in and outside of the facility. It also acts as a get-together space for visiting families to cook and eat together.

LIVE-WORK : SPA | HOSPITALITY
The project brief was to design a spa for multiple sclerosis patients with residence for the owner who is also the physicist that consults with the patients. As the multiple sclerosis patients are sensitive to stimuli, it was important to create an environment that is soothing mentally and physically. The navigation through the spa would guide them to their healing.
25
The concept is derived from the word ‘ascend’. It strives to visually make the complicated lives of these patients seem clearer and simpler. The interior spaces and furniture follow linear forms and neutral color palette to create a soothing atmosphere that is not harsh on the visual as well as tactile senses of the patients. The diffused cove lighting adds to the softness in the environment.

STORE REDESIGN | RETAIL
A straight line or plane that touches a curve or curved surface at a point is called a tangent. Technology touches our lives at different areas molding our lives in various ways, just as a set of tangent creates a curve maintaining their rigidity. The form is developed from two dimensional tangents into three dimensional form, encompassing the whole space inside the hp store, molding it softly but with rigid and straight lines.
31
32
Zoning Diagram and Concept The zoning is done based on the types of devices displayed in the store. The spiral design guides the customer from the popular devices at the entrance to the newer devices launched and were getting ignored. The striking form attracts the customer as it stands out from the rest of the adjoining stores.

LAWYER’S OFFICE | PROFESSIONAL
Rajasthan is a state of rich cultural and architectural heritage. The intricately detailed wooden and marble carvings in the palaces form the highlight of architecture in this state. The design of this live-work space draws inspiration from Rajasthan’s cultural background and combines it with the contemporary design style.
This is a live-work project located in Rajasthan, India. The client is a lawyer with a family of six. In this two storey structure the ground level is dedicated to the lawyer’s office while the two upper levels are designed to form the client’s residence. The client wanted to incorporate elements of Rajasthan while also making it modern. Materials like marble and wood along with design elements derived from carvings found in palaces of Rajasthan are used to create a link with the heritage of this Indian city.

With most of the days spent in my bedroom this year, the outside world looked more inviting than ever. The grey ambience inside in contrast to the bright view through the window resembles our lives in quarantine.
My brief time in California during the my internship exposed me to a new landscape, culture and color palette. This illustration captures the landscape outside a house I passed on my trek to the Hollywood sign.
