RETHINKING THE ROLE OF MARKETS IN MUMBAI

SECOND FLOOR

Storage Market

Often times urban designers and planners fail to recognize the importance of informal spaces in the city. They are treated as static objects. The market is more than merely a location where one obtains food and other necessities, but also embodies the community’s unique sense of place. Markets in Mumbai, both in urban and rural areas, constitute a mosaic of diverse actors and tend to be highly fragmented. However, with the changing fabric of the city, certain markets are becoming redundant. The modern consumer does not want to go out and would just opt for any kind of an online format of shopping. Today’s time where e-commerce has taken over the world, the idea of public realm could be further questioned. Due to the drop of interactions in markets, the collective memory of these communities have ceased. Transaction spaces in markets have a certain physicality, due to the change in time that is being lost. Above all, the most salient reason for the decrease in the traditional market is modern people’s transformed lifestyle. Rethinking markets’ roles in the urban structure as the new type of social area, supporting urban traditions, and exchanging between communities economically and socially while dealing with current sustainability issues is now necessary. The mode and the method the State/ Government/BMC uses for the transformation is not based on a historical or present day understanding of the people. Markets are getting diminished and so is the public realm, haphazard development has caused the change in the city’s landscape and its real estate. The thesis aims to rethink the role of markets in the urban structure as the new type of hybrid module supporting a new type of socio-economic development, and create a medium for the communities by creating a platform for economic as well as socially means. The research is determined by the pursuit of new forms of a market which can contribute more to the city and functional program corresponding to the demands of a modern consumer.

DIVINITY IN DENSITY HYBRID . COMPACT . POROUS Housing Ontologies Cessed Building In Island City Fanaswadi, Kalbadevi

33(7) Reconstruction or Redevelopment of Cessed Buildings in the Island City. The Rent Control Act in Mumbai was passed in the year 1948. Thus, in 1949, a few buildings were established that classified as Cessed Buildings. Accomodation in these buildings was not rent based, instead, a cess or tax had to be paid to the owner as the maintenance cost for the said building. Today, most of these buildings are in a poor condition and thus, need to reconstructed whereas the other are in an average condition and can function well after minor repairs. A major number of these buildings are present in the C Ward, namely in the Fanaswadi precinct. Few buildings in the precinct have been redeveloped, however, most of these buildings still have to undergo redevelopment. Fanas Wadi / Phanaswadi is a neighbourhood in Kalbadevi, South Mumbai. It is known for its temple devoted to Lord Venkateshwara. The local folks call this temple as ‘Lord Balaji mandir’. The name fanas is Marathi for jackfruit, probably pointing to a time when the trees grew abundantly here. The temple at Fanaswadi, Mumbai dedicated to the Lord of the Seven Hills Sri Venkateshwara was consecrated on 10 June 1927. Cess means tax and a logical deduction about cessed building would imply that a building that pays cess -- a tax commonly referred to as the “repair fund”- is termed as a cessed building. The tax is paid by the tenants of the building simply because the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Act, 1976 (MHADA) makes special provisions for repairs and reconstruction of “cessed” buildings.

FLY-MAN-GO WWF Competition

FLY-MAN-GO |Flamingo Nature and wildlife is the best part of the oration, the form takes inspiration from the beauty of the wilderness around it. The opening of great egret’s feathers, the grace of flamingo’s long slender legs or the charm camouflaging humans into the wild and opening up nature to them. These concepts, are used to develop the design of the space and are implied in the form of either roof or structural system or fenestration system. The visiting center becomes the first step to create awareness about the flora and fauna of the site and to educate visitors towards the protection of the ecosystem. The volume of the space increases depending on the functions of the block. The triangular roof profile is twisted to give the look of feathers opening up, with skylights to allow sun to brighten up the space. The windows are of two different size to allow the user view the landscape surrounding of the region depending on the use. The visitors center connects the observation points through a meandering pathway amongst the topography of the site. These observation points sit comfortably in the rural, farmland-landscape whilst creating a unique experience as well as educating the occupants of its beautiful surroundings. The louvre fenestration systems allow the people to freely observe the wildlife and at the same time hides their movement. The flamingo’s leg like column is also used as the design element for the same. The material palette consists of timber posts and frames that are locally available which help the structure to blend within its surrounding and also allows us to visualize our concept into a volumetric space.

VOIDS IN VOLUMES

CONCEPT

PROJECTING STUDENT HOUSING IN A CAMPUS

The primary design concept is focused on encouraging interaction by providing students with a network of meeting spaces fostering collaboration and conviviality. The existing institute draws on the austere ideologies from Brutalism as a form of expression as a response to the extreme climate, and positions it contextually. The proposed design project, similarly influenced by it’s adjacent buildings and context, also opts for a Brutalist approach. To break away from the heaviness of the mass the idea of scooping volumes and creating voids is an ideal method to incorporate for maximum light and ventilation in the internal spaces. The spaces are envisioned to break away from the typical ideas of close quarters in a bleakly designed dormitory. The volumetric parasol that provides thermal comfort below and measures to reduce active solar heat gain such as utilizing North lights while blocking harsh solar radiation from the South. The building intends to create an interactive community learning environment nestled within its cultural context with a keen focus on environmental sensitivity.

3RD YEAR STUDENT EXHIBITION- DOCUMENT & RESEARCH

The Objects That We Collected Around Us Open Out Trajectories Of Connections With The World, Material , Function And Symbolic. These Trajectories Make Communities , Structure Identities And Are Directed And Mediated By Institutions. The Third Year Study Trip Followed Some Of These Trajectories Of Objects From Homes In Kohima Village To Discover Some Of Institutions That Help In Shaping Contemporary Identities In The City. The Study Concentrated On The Kohima Village In The City, Which Owns The Land Upon Which The City Has Grown. The Village Itself Is Divided Into Four Distinct Communities Called “Khels”. Each Khel Has Many Clans Within.

HALLEL MUSIC CENTRE An Institute For Music And Culture

Kohima’s Intriguing Culture Combined With Its Rich Heritage Leaves A Classic Tale To Tell. Such Rich Cultures Also Did Not Have Enough Infrastructural Space For Themselves Thus, An Institute For Music Called Hallel,Is What I Intend On Designing. There Are Very Few Musical Institutions Thriving In Kohima And Smaller Branch Of Hallel Center Which Prevail-es Within The L-Khel. The Lack Of Space And Increasing Interest Of People Had To Be Combat-ted. This Project Would Be A Joint Venture Project, A Government Registered Institution. The Main Idea Of The Project Was To Have A Cascading Roof Which Reflects The Surrounding Terrain Of The Site And Which Largely Prevails-in Kohima. There Was An Intension Of Building Two Volumes,One Within Another Bounded By The Skin Of The Building. Hence The Structural Systems Of The Interior And Exterior Are Independent Of Each Other. Various Community Spaces Are Created For Students And People To Tune Into Music.

BEACH

The Brief Was To Design A Small 100sqm Public Toilet Which Is Covid19 Free. We Selected Juhu Beach As Our Site Knowing That As Soon As The Lock-down Is Lifted, It Would Be The First Location Where Most People Would Prefer To Go. At The Beach, Everyone Eats Food Gathered Around These Stalls While The Kids Play With The Sand. The Idea Was To Design A Toilet And Relate It To The Context In A Way That People Could Continue Eating Street Food, Buying Balloons, Cotton Candy, Etc. And Kids Would Be Able To Play, Enjoy The Breeze And The View Of The Sea. The Current Toilet Is In A Poor Condition. It Is Made Of Corrugated Sheets And Is Barely Functional. It Does Not Have Enough Cubicles Or For That Matter Enough Space For People To Enter And Exit. At The Moment, People Resort To Defecation In The Sea Even After A Public Toilet Is Present On Site. Keeping In Mind The Level Of Sanitation Required, We Have Proposed A Toilet Where The Roof Becomes A Playful Element, The Physically Disabled Have Proper Access And There Is Enough Number Of Cubicles And Corridor Space For All.

01. The design process started with the decision of keeping the toilet in a linear fashion in order to minimalize contact between people

02. To provide a central axis and divide the main block into two. The central corridor was kept narrow keeping in mind the concept used behind the

03. To place the cubicles in a row, such that it would receive adequate sunlight in order to minimize wet surfaces (as wet surfaces could be a catalyst in spreading COVID).

04. To place the handicap toilet close to the ramp for easy access. The open space in the middle was also utilized to build a shop that would hold all essentials required for sanitization as well as for the aid of wom-

05. The roof was placed over the toilet. Then the roof was raised in order to provide cross ventilation, louvers that would fasten the drying process of the toilets, and to let sunlight into the cubicles.

06. The cubicles were also given a frosted glass window that would give the view of the sea to the person in the cubicle.

07. Important design idea was to make the roof accessible such that people could go up and enjoy the view of the entire beach. The roof was tiled in a way to maintain the distance norm according to the COVID19 .

08. Skylights were placed to provide the distance required between two accessible seating. These skylights also brought in sunlight that would further help in drying up the toilet surfaces

EXISTING PUBLIC TOILET

SECTION - AA’ 48

OPEN DEIFICATION

09. The last design strategy was to provide stalls and seating areas at a 2m dis-

tance from each other such that people would maintain social distancing even while doing all these other activities.

10. . There is also our main staircase which takes the person up to the roof and is placed such that people coming from the road can have easy access.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

SECTION - BB’ 1. Window The window is designed such that it gets sunlight from three directions, south-west, northwest and west. This makes the window extremely efficient and helps in drying up the cubicles. The window has frosted glass that also serves the purpose of recreation for the people since it allows them a view of the sea. 2. Rotating door It would allow the users to see if someone is already waiting, they could wait outside the toilet and not gather in the corridor area. A platform is provided such that when someone stands on it, the sensors would rotate the door and the person would enter the cubicle. The other platform space is now available for the second person to come and wait. This also ensures that there is no contact between the two. Sensors are used to reduce contact as much as possible. 3. Bidet Seeing the current situation of COVID19 in the country, people might prefer to use the Indian style WC more as compared to a western one (as there is no contact). On the other hand, it might be uncomfortable for some people to sit and use the Indian one. Thus, we came up with the idea of a bidet, which may be used as both. This would also save space in a way. 4. Pedal Door These doors present at the entrances and in the changing rooms are basically mechanical doors that open when one places their foot on the pedal right in front of the door. This again is a proposal to reduce contact while opening a door.

5. Barrel These sanitization showers work in a similar fashion as the pedal doors. Once the pedal is pressed, the sanitizer is sprayed over the person. These are kept at the exits mainly such that people can sanitize themselves even while leaving the toilet

6. Shop This shop would provide day to day groceries medicines & also provide sanitary products for the toilet as well as provide menstrual products for the women’s toilet. A polycarbonate screen is used with a void in the center to provide minimal contact.

7. Sand Removal Area Since the toilet is located on a beach, it is also important to provide a sand removal platform. The platform is situated in a way that it would always maintain that 2m distance.

The objects that we collected around us open out trajectories of connections with the world, material, function and symbolic. These trajectories make communities, structure identities and are directed and mediated by institutions. The third year study trip followed some of these trajectories of objects from homes in Kohima village to discover some of institutions that help in shaping contemporary identities in the city.
