Professional Experience 2010 - A member of AIESEC in Oman, Local Committee Bousher Vice President of Communication in Local Committee Bousher. 2011 - Worked for NORPLAN office on surveying a Plan Area that required (Preprocessing map data for parcels, reconaissance survey to update missing map data and collecting information for updating the attributes in GIS Data Base for parcels) for a City Redevelopment Master Plan. (August 15 2011 till October 1st 2011) 2012 - Part of the “Sustainable Urbanization Patterns in Oman” research project funded by the Oman Research Council under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sonja Nebel (Principal Investigator). (Phase 1 & 2 - February 10th till current date) Designed an advert for a newly established furniture company.

Achievements 2008 - Partial Scholarship at the German University of Technology ‘GUtech’ (September 2008) 2009 - Participated at the German University of Technology ‘GUtech’ Fundraiser. Attended Youth Leadership Forum Attended the 4th National Conference

2010 - Attended AIESEC Gulf Conference in Dubai (November 2010) Designed T-shirts for the Omani delegation Participated in the 2nd German University of Technology ‘GUtech’ Charity Fundraiser Hosted the first public student conference for Arabic Planning Law. German Language Centre Group Work

Knowledge Transfer

The task is to build a German Language Centre in the middle of a busy place in Muscat. The site is located in Muttrah, the port area of Muscat and where interaction and knowledge is transferred, from the people to the centre and the centre to the people, therefore the Language Centre is called Knowledge Transfer. In order for us to accomplish the theme into our building, knowledge had to surround the whole building. Therefore, firstly, a void is the centre piece of the

building. Secondly, the void is crafted through bookshelves surrounded the whole building that also act as the facade of the building. Thirdly, classrooms built on boxes were created that come out bookshelves, the shelves and fulfill the needs of our German Language Centre. Knowledge transfer is achieved through all the spaces provided to interact, from the coffee shop in the centre to the stairs people sit to read, classrooms, the gallery and the spaces between classes.

In Ruwi we saw a lot of compact houses and a good amount of mixed use buildings, where the first floor is for commercial purposes and the upper floors are used for residential purposes or storage in some cases. By having compact buildings of mixed use and residential makes it very convenient for the people living around that area to go about and get their daily needs without a car. For a city like Muscat that is car based, it is very important that we have pedestrian paths for the func-

tions close by along the narrow roads of Ruwi. Therefore part of the concept includes providing various shaded walking paths. One of the most striking features in the site are the shacks that the Indian and Pakistani laborers lived. It is not just the deteriorated living conditions but the spatial identity they gave to the place; it became their own space within the shacks.

In the past, forts were used for military purposes, enclosed to the outside world with openings for only ammunitions and located on high landscape yet blended into the landscape. The contrast of the openings and relationship of outside and inside spaces are translated into our design by the use of arches creating an arcade, thus experiencing the place from all angles. The arches also act as a loadbearing element of the building. Additionally, the floors vary in both height and function, having the higher floors used as viewports and the lower in height floors as a different function such as, a restaurant and a gallery.
