Lo curioso es que cuando tomo conciencia de este echo estoy haciendo obra en diferente técnica a la par, caso que no me desagrada, porque la fotografía en cuanto revelado e impresión dentro del laboratorio, puede ser lo mas rígido o libre que desees. En cuanto a la multimedia, es una de las expresiones en las que quiero ampliar mi conocimiento ya que es otra cara del arte que esta brindando todo un panorama ilimitado para incursionar.

Painting is what I spend most of my time on, but photography currently plays an important complementary role in the way that I observe and interpret my surroundings and then find different ways of finishing my paintings. The strange thing is that when I consciously think about using my photography as a basis for my paintings, what I’m actually doing is creating two very different types of art at the same time. I like this because developing and printing photos in a darkroom can be as rigid or as free as you want it to be. As for multimedia, it’s something I want to know more about as it’s another area of art which offers unlimited artistic scope. D.S.: You essentially use enamel. Why this technique?

-D.S. Utilizas esencialmente el esmalte, ¿Por qué esta técnica?

O.P.: In this respect I should say that the enamel uses me; before I became a professional artist enamel paint was merely something I used when I worked as a sign writer. Now, even though I’ve tried other techniques, it’s become a paint I always turn to as it has the delicacy and flexibility I need.

O.P. En este sentido puedo decir que el esmalte me utiliza, ya que antes de dedicarme profesionalmente a las artes, la pintura esmalte era solo una herramienta para mi trabajo de rotulista en mis tiempos de preparatoria. Ahora se ha convertido en una pintura que le encuentro esa delicadeza y flexibilidad que ha hecho que siempre recurra a ella, aunque haya tratado con otros medios.

D.S.: Do you consider yourself an urban landscape artist who explores the themes of the city? O.P.: Any city, large or small, retains a magic and equality for its inhabitants; its essence never changes. Let’s say that all cities have the same blood type. I’d say that that blood type is O positive. Some have all the blood they need running though their veins, while others are in need of a transfusion. I mean that what I like to do is take and translate that urban magic, be it good or bad, and then transfer it to the viewer, be it in the form of a concrete landscape or merely as forms resembling a landscape.

-D.S. ¿Te consideras como un paisajista urbano que explora la ciudad? O.P. La ciudad grande o pequeña conserva una magia y una igualdad en cuanto a su vivencia, siempre tiene el mismo torrente sanguíneo, digamos que todas las ciudades tienen el mismo tipo de sangre, a mi manera todas tienen un O positivo. Algunas completan sus siete litros, otras tal vez tengan sólo dos. Quero decir que lo que me gusta recibir de las ciudades es esa magia, blanca o negra, y poder transmitirlo al espectador ya sea como paisaje o solo como elementos que se le parecen.-D.S. Veo un paralelo en tu trabajo con el de la artista portuguesa Viera de Silva, para quien la ciudad ha sido también una constante fuente de inspiración y que trataba de reconstruir el espacio en función de lo imaginario ¿Tienes también ese mismo propósito?

D.S.: I see a parallel in your work with the Portuguese artist Vieira da Silva, for whom the city has also been a constant source of inspiration and who would try to reconstruct the urban space according to how she imagined it. Is this your aim too? O.P: The imaginary for me should always be there in any piece of art and in my case I can say that I use space according to what I feel. A space, as I see it, is a place from which you take whatever you want. What you don’t want can be transformed or changed. It’s like shopping at the supermarket; you already know

O.P. Para mi lo imaginario siempre debe de existir en cualquier pieza artística, y en mi caso puedo decir que utilizo el espacio en función del sentimiento. El espacio a mi manera de ver, es un lugar donde tomas lo que quieres y lo que no, lo transformas, es como un día de compras en el supermercado: tú ya sabes

tu dieta, pero cuando quieres tratar con algo mas, corres el riesgo de que no te funcione, pero siempre tienes la opción de combinarlo para que te sepa más sabroso.

-D.S. En una de tus series el color blanco invade tus lienzos ¿buscas convertir el espacio urbano en algo inmaterial, o es solo un intento para borrarlo?

D.S.: In one of your collections the colour white invades the canvas. Are you looking to turn the urban space into something immaterial, or are you trying to erase it?

O.P. Realmente siempre estoy en un sube y baja; cuando menos lo espero soy lo más barroco posible. Tengo la necesidad de explicar el mayor detalle permitido, hacer de mi sentimiento algo visible en el lienzo. Otras veces el sentimiento tiene que llegar a mis entrañas en cuanto “veo” mi obra terminada, no cuando la “observo”. Todo esto tiene en cierta forma influencias de algunas corrientes de las que me encuentro atraído. Mis lienzos dominados por el blanco son un reflejo de interpretación provocado por el minimalismo, y un proceso de exploración y capacidad para sintetizar mi percepción.

O.P.: My way of working constantly moves between two extremes; when I least expect it, I’m the most elaborate. I have a need to explain as much detail as the work will allow, transform my feelings into something that can be seen on the canvas. Other times I need to feel it in my gut when I ‘see’ my work is finished and not when I merely ‘look’ at it. All this is in some way influenced by certain trends which I find myself drawn to. My ‘white’ canvases reflect a minimalist interpretation and are a process of exploring and being able to synthesise my perception of it.

-D.S. El poeta Bernard Noel dice que pintar es dar al lienzo lo que el lienzo pide ¿Estas de acuerdo con eso?

D.S: The poet Bernard Noel says that painting is giving the canvas what it asks for. Do you agree? O.P.: I share the thought, although personally I use the canvas in a different way: for me the canvas is someone who asks silent questions, criticises your decisions and asks you whether the work is good or bad. Someone who you always want to remain on good terms with and when you’re done with him or her will always throw your final decision back in your face.

O.P. A London Eye”

London... So many images spring to mind. The London that visitors see would most likely include a tour of the most British of traditions; the Royal Family, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square or Harrods. The London Eye stands on the banks of the River Thames and has become one of the most popular tourist attractions, affording a bird’s eye view of one of the most spectacular cities in the world.

The prevailing trend of our times leans towards the fantastical. This is made evident by a shapeless, undefined and seductive structure, which produces a change in the perception of the senses. Creating an urban world affords a new aesthetic appreciation of everyday life where the world is presented in a completely different way; another visual perception of reality to the point of seeing it as somewhat superfluous (looking beyond the appearance of things); the hidden side of modernisation (alienation, isolation and overcrowding). “A London Eye” offers a different interpretation of certain parts of London, some better known than others. This artist’s eye invites the viewer into this world in the hope that the grey skies, modern architecture and urban paraphernalia, which form an integral part of each composition, transmit their own beauty and tranquillity.

A LONDON EYE”: Photography by Olivié Ponce 4th – 22nd October 2006 (during the 34th International Cervantino Festival) In collaboration with La Abadía Hotel, Olivié Ponce is pleased to announce his latest series of photographs, which will be on show at both sites of La Abadía Hotel in San Javier, Guanajuato. Entitled “A London Eye” and in keeping with the main characteristics of the artist’s work, the exhibition offers a different interpretation of certain parts of London, some better known than others.

A LONDON EYE”: Exposición fotográfica de Olivié Ponce Del 4 al 22 de octubre 2006 (permanencia durante el 34 Festival Internacional Cervantino) En colaboración con La Abadía Hotel se muestra la última exposición fotográfica del artista plástico Olivié Ponce en las instalaciones de ambos hoteles La Abadía en la Colonia San Javier, Guanajuato. Titulada “A London Eye”, la exposición incluye fotografias de lugares conocidos del Reino Unido, que se caractarizan en el sentido urbano y cotidiano que viene en el trabajo del artista. Como tributo al Reino Unido, país invitado de honor en el 34 Festival Internacional Cervantino, dicha exposición tiene como finalidad comunicar la belleza y la complejidad de este país conocido, y a su vez poco conocido en el continente latinoamericano; en el cual coexisten las tradiciones clásicas, tanto históricas como culturales, con los grandes logros y cambios de la época moderna. Esta última serie de fotografías, realizada en el transcurso del verano del 2006, resulta ser una ventana a otra cultura por medio del ojo mexicano.

The exhibition is a tribute to the UK, which is guest of honour among the countries participating at this year’s 34th International Cervantino Festival. The show aims to convey the beauty and complexity of this famous country, still unknown to many who live in Latin America; a country where historical and cultural traditions coexist alongside the great achievements and changes brought by the modern age. This latest series of photographs was made over the course of the summer of 2006 and allows the spectator to view another culture through a Mexican eye.

A young Mexican artist, Olivié was born in Mexico City in 1975 and completed his BA in Fine Art (Painting and Photography) at the University of Guanajuato. Olivié has had a number of solo and group exhibitions in Mexico and the USA and uses his own particular style to express his emotions through his work. Mainly abstract, his paintings offer the viewer the freedom to interpret them in a very personal way. Jolgorio Iconográfico : When did you get into art and how did you start working as an artist? Olivié Ponce : You could say that I’ve been involved informally for as long as I can remember, and professionally for less than 10 years, but I’ve definitely always been connected to what they call the most noble of the arts. It’s more than creating art; it’s letting out the restless beast that you carry inside, finding a mass platform for what you want to say. The day I began enjoying that was the day I got into art. JI : What are the elements that characterise your artistic work? OP : I would say open spaces. Yes, open spaces. At least that’s what they look like; the open spaces of everyday real life, the world created by human

OP : Digamos que de manera informal desde que tengo memoria, y profesional menos de una década. Pero ciertamente nunca me he desconectado de esta tarea a la que llaman la mas noble de las artes. Mas que incursionar es dejar salir al monstruo que traes inquieto dentro de ti, buscarle plataforma a lo que quieres comunicar de manera masiva. Cuando disfruté de hacer eso, incursioné en el arte. 2/ ¿Cuáles son los elementos que caracterizan tu trabajo artístico? OP : Podría decir que los espacios abiertos, sí, los espacios abiertos, por lo menos eso parecen, claro!, muy perecidos a los espacios abiertos de nuestra cotidianeidad, nuestra realidad de todos los días,

JI : An obvious question: What are your major influences? OP : The infinite amount of works of art we come across around us… not necessarily those exhibited in galleries or museums. JI : A hobby or a professional activity? Is it possible to make a living from your art in Mexico? OP : Art has certainly been my hobby for a large part of my life, which was a good way to start working in the profession I now worship. As for the second question, “to make a living” is a very good way of putting it; most professional artists in Mexico only manage to do just that - “make a living”! JI : Do you think that there are enough exhibition spaces in Mexico to make yourself known as a young artist? OP : Not necessarily. It seems that the veil of Mexican inferiority left by the Spanish conquest still lives on in art spaces; spaces that are handed over to foreign artists, with little importance given to whether the art is good or bad, innovative or just more of the same; all that seems to matter is that it’s not Mexican! On the other hand, it seems as if a lot of the independent galleries pay little attention to the craftsmanship of the art, which isn’t that important when it comes to selling. However, that’s not to say that I’m dismissing Mexico; it’s a great forum with quality, which as well as creating art has something to say and makes artistic statements. What is lacking is a culture of support for young artists. JI : Lastly, how would you define the influence of art on a society’s history and, in particular, on the history of Mexican society? OP : They say that art is the best form of trickery as a way to uncover a great truth. Any artistic activity reflects the needs or excesses of a society and Mexico is no exception; it has been able to make use of its most distinguished artists, who have, in turn, made use of Mexico the dreamer’s needs.

3/ Una pregunta inevitable: ¿Cuáles son tus mayores influencias? OP : Las innumerables obras de arte con las que nos encontramos a nuestro alrededor… no necesariamente las predestinadas para exhibir arte, como una galería o museo. 4/¿Un Hobby o una actividad profesional?¿Existe la posibilidad de vivir de tu arte en México? OP : Ciertamente en gran parte de mi vida el Arte era mi pasatiempo, buen principio para lo que ahora idolatro como mi profesión. En cuanto a lo segundo, la pregunta emplea muy bien lo de “vivir”, porque la mayoría de profesionistas en el arte y en México precisamente solo le alcanza para eso!,“vivir”. 5/ ¿Piensas que en México existen espacio suficientes para darse a conocer como joven creador? OP : No necesariamente como creador, pareciera que aun no se quita el velo del malinchismo en los espacios para el arte, espacios que son reservados a los artistas extranjeros que no importa si es buen arte o malo, si es innovador o mas de lo mismo, sino simplemente extranjero!. Por otro lado muchas de las galerías independientes parecieran no distinguir la artesanía del arte, distinción que no importa cuando se trata de vender, en fin con esto no se descarta que México es un gran foro y que existe calidad, que mas que creadora es propositiva, lo que no es suficiente es la cultura para respaldar a un joven creador. 6/ Finalmente como podrías definir la influencia del Arte en la historia de una sociedad, y de la sociedad mexicana? OP : Se dice por ahí que el arte es la mejor manera de engañar para mostrar la gran verdad, y cualquier actividad artística refleja las necesidades o excesos sociales, ahora bien, México no es la excepción se ha sabido utilizar a nuestros artistas destacados y ellos a su vez las necesidades del México soñador.

Olivié Ponce was born in Mexico City in 1975. His work is centred in the sense of the chaotic and can in a way be viewed as a criticism of our urban environment. His influences are the everyday surroundings that are at times obscured by our daily routine. Any city, large or small, retains a magic and equality for its inhabitants; its essence never changes. What Olivié aims to do is take and translate that urban magic, be it good or bad, and then transfer it to the viewer, be it in the form of a concrete landscape or merely as forms resembling a landscape. Though abstract in style and essence, many of his paintings may seem more baroque. The colour white invades the canvas, reflecting a minimalist interpretation of the urban space with parts of telegraph cables rendered as simple lines. His technique essentially uses enamel, which is hardwearing, but gives his work a delicacy and flexibility. The final result is a series of modern paintings with a seductive visual impact. Olivié has exhibited his work in Mexico, the USA and UK. In addition, he holds regular workshops in contemporary abstract painting and works as a book illustrator.
