The Editor Hi, I'm Makayla! I am originally from a small area in Iowa but currently live in Greenville, North Carolina. My desire for design started my sophomore year of high school in a design class and blossomed from there. The inspiration for this magazine came from the views I encountered walking to work everyday in Greenville. I would walk by so many beautiful houses and see unique differences in each of them, so I decided to share their beauty with you. There is something about beauty that can take your breath away and make you feel peaceful inside. The homes I encountered have strengths in their exteriors based on their looks. No background knowledge is known and the interiors of these homes are a mystery. Most of the houses you will see in the following pages will be photos I personally took while walking about Greenville in the fall of 2012. Landscaping and neighborhoods will also be included as they contribute to the feel of the home. All home address or websites will be found in small lettering on the page the photo is found. I hope you find my work as inspiring as I do, your feedback is always welcome. Enjoy!

Residential Exteriors Residential Exteriors focuses on the designs of houses that you would find in the average neighborhood. The images in this magazine range from cute, small homes, to the modern home, to extravagance. The focus of this issue is the elements and principles of design. Each will be clearly explained with examples in the following pages. By reading this magazine, our hope is that your design knowledge will grow and you will find it useful for future design challenges.

Elements │Texture

Surface Quality Real (Tactile Textured)

Hint: Texture can visually spice up the look of a structure.

1901 6th St. Greenville, NC

Real texture is actual texture that you could feel. It is used with bricks on the outside of this house. Bricks are rough textured.

12

Elements │Texture

Implied Texture

Flanagan Building Greenville, NC Clip Art

Implied texture is seen when something looks like it would have a certain texture, but it actually doesn’t. This wood looks like it would be rough and unfinished but it is actually very smooth. Example: Drawing VS. Real Thing A drawing of a tree would have implied texture where a real tree would have real texture.

13

Elements │Texture

texture is any texture that wont reflect light or images. This house shutter has a none reflective texture.

Hint: Non reflective textures will help reduce glare.

Elements │Texture

Reflective Reflective texture is a texture that creates a reflection like a mirror. This piece of decorative metal acts like a mirror with a reflective texture.

Hint: Placing reflective surfaces like mirrors in a home can make it appear larger than it actually is. 15

Table Lamps Lowe’s Greenville, NC

Table lamps in an interior are lamps that sit atop a table typically to provide task lighting.

Task lighting is light specifically there to brighten a work area for a specific task like reading.

Lowe’s Greenville, NC

This exterior lamp is similar to a table lamp because it would sit upon something similar to a table like a deck.

A monochromatic color scheme is tints or shades of the same hue. In this photo the house is painted with different shads of the same color blue, resulting in a monochromatic color scheme.

24

Elements │Color

Analogous

3404 Cutler Ct. Greenville, NC

An analogous color scheme contains colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. This yellow house with the green in the nature around it is analogous, because green and yellow are next to each other on the color wheel.

Positive Space This image shows a lot of positive space. Positive Space being space that is occupied by an element or form.

The red represents the positive space in this image. 30

Elements │Space

Negative Space This picture shows a lot of negative space. Negative space being the space around and between the subjects of an image. In this case the subject is the house, so the entire space around the house is negative.

In this case, Everything that is not red is negative space.

Abstract

An abstract shape is a 2D shape that resembles something but doesn’t look exactly alike. This abstract drawing was drawn on a sidewalk using chalk. It resembles geometric shapes.

34

Elements │Shape

Geometric Geometric shapes

101 E. Baywood Ln. Greenville, NC

are 2D shapes that you learned when you were in preschool. Triangle, circle, square, diamond, and so on. This entire house is considered a form because it is 3D but the shapes on the house are 2D.

The red outlines on this image represent geometric shapes. 35

Elements │Shape

Natural / Organic

A natural or organic shape would be a 2D shape of something in natural found in nature. Here these 2 trees are natural shapes. 36

41

Elements │Form

Abstract

Abstract forms are 3D shapes, that can be seen as something from real life, even if they don’t look exactly the same. For example, these abstract forms resemble furniture.

42

Elements │Form

Non-Objective

Non-objective forms are 3D shapes that do not resemble anything seen in real life. This pile of leaves does not shape to represent anything in life, other than a pile of leaves, therefore it is a non-objective form.

Fact: Symmetry is used a lot in classical design.

This house was built with structural symmetry. If this house was split down the middle, the sides would be mirrors of each other. Monarch Butterflies are symmetrical.

Visual Asymmetry

This house is visually Asymmetric, not the same, because the two sides of the house aren’t and don’t look the same size.

Visual Radial Symmetry

Radial symmetry is symmetry around a central axis. This outdoor patio fan shows symmetry around the structure between the three lights, the axis. The radial symmetry helps aid in the fan’s circulating process. 49

Unity Through Shape

The triangles of the roof being continuous throughout the house, brings unity to the home making it appear more appealing.

52

Elements │Balance

3205 Baywood Ln. Greenville, NC

Unity Through Color

Unity is presented here with the use of color. While the green is a very unique color for shutters with the brick, the continued use of it ties the whole house together.

53

Elements │Balance

3403 Cutler Ct. Greenville, NC

Unity Through Repetition

The repetition of the windows on this home make its size less awkward and brings everything together forming a visual unity.

54

Elements │Balance

628 Cheltenham Dr. Greenville, NC

Variety Through Color

While the color here is repeated, the color is randomly placed and the contrast between the color is too great to pull the house together as a unit, therefore the color creates variety. 55

Actual Density

Density is defined as the degree of compactness. This house appears to be and is a very dense structure, there for it has actual density.

62

Elements │Massing

University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Optimal Density

Optimal Density is found when something appears dense but actually isn’t. Here, these flowers were all planted very close together making this area appear very dense, but up close, there is plenty of room between the flowers and they actually aren’t dense at all.

Elements │Rhythm

Repetitive

Repetition is repeating something over again. It is seen here in the flower pots. The flower pots cause the eye to move, producing rhythm.

66

Elements │Rhythm

604 Cheltenham Dr. Greenville, NC

Climatic

This picture, as seen before, shows climatic rhythm because elements are getting repeated to draw the eye upward. The repetition of the use of line and shape on the patio, draw the eye up to the 2nd level and then to the roof. 67

Elements │Rhythm

1506 5th St. Greenville, NC

Contrast

Contrast is the arrangement of opposite elements. Here the contrast is the difference between the dark lines on the front of the house and the cream background paint.

68

Elements │Rhythm

1704 5th St. Greenville, NC

Transitional/Flowing

Transitional or flowing rhythm makes the eye move, it sort of directs the eye to a certain place. Here, these stairs and the side blocks create a rhythm that directs the eye up the stairs and down the sidewalk
