Brad Vynalek Chairman of the Board Make-A-Wish® Arizona Serving on the Board of Directors for Make-A-Wish® Arizona is a unique experience. It comes with the history of being the very first Make-A-Wish chapter ever. It comes with the understanding that, as a growing state, we see an increasing number of children who need our services. It also comes with the hope, strength and joy that are a part of every wish experience. This year, our Board enthusiastically committed themselves to increasing awareness about the impact of a wish to our friends, family and colleagues. We shared that the very first wish ever, Christopher’s wish, was granted right here in Arizona, thanks to the help of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. We shared that we have granted more than 4,600 wishes in our 34 year history. We shared that we are on track to once again break records with the number of wishes we grant in Arizona. This Annual Report provides you with the data that proves that Make-A-Wish Arizona is here to support the more than 350 Arizona kids who are referred to our chapter each year. What it doesn’t share is the journey each of our wish kids goes through once they are referred for a wish. Those stories are a significant reason why my board colleagues and I are on task to continue our chapter’s growth trend, so we can reach every eligible child in Arizona. We are so pleased that you too have invested in creating hope, strength and joy for our Arizona wish kids and we thank you for your continued support.

Elizabeth Reich President/CEO Make-A-Wish® Arizona What an exciting year! At Make-A-Wish® Arizona, we granted a record breaking 317 wishes in Fiscal Year 2013. There are many reasons we were able to reach this milestone: a complete staff, working in unison; an increase in volunteer commitment; the growing support of corporate donors; and, most important, an increase in our donations from generous supporters like you. It’s our vision to continue this growth well into the next decade, reaching every child in Arizona with a life-threatening medical condition who is eligible for a wish experience. We work toward this vision because we know there is more to a wish than a trip or a meet-and-greet with a favorite star. We work toward this vision because we know there is power to a wish. This year, we have been lucky to see a wide variety of wish experiences, each one filled with hope, strength and joy not just for our wish kids, but for every person involved. I encourage you to visit our website at www.arizona.wish.org to see our wish stories, as they will inspire and entertain you while also demonstrating that no matter what the child’s one true wish, Make-A-Wish Arizona is here to make it happen. As the founding chapter of the international wish granting organization, Make-A-Wish Arizona was shaped on the idea that together, people can change the life and memories of a child with a life-threatening medical condition. We are honored to have more than 600 volunteers state-wide who help us make that happen. We also are pleased to have thousands of donors who share our vision through their dedication to our mission and their generosity. Thank you for helping share the power of a wish® with our Arizona wish kids.

Cassandra Byrd Wish Mom Our family was the recipient of not one but two special wishes courtesy of Make-A-Wish® Arizona due to the fact that my twins, Lauren and Kyle, both were born with spinal muscular atrophy, a terminal, degenerative neuromuscular condition. Like all kids, Lauren and Kyle each have their own special activities that enthrall them. For Lauren, its princesses and for Kyle, it’s baseball. So, at the age of three, when we were told they were eligible for a wish, they came up with wishes that were as different as their personalities, but both unique to them. I can’t begin to describe the thrill it was to be their parent and watch Lauren and Kyle just be kids. They were able to be, momentarily, not defined by their disease or by their wheelchairs. Lauren delighted in the royal attention lavished upon her by the princesses at Walt Disney World® while she charmed everyone right back. For her wish week, she wasn’t thinking about the painful therapies waiting for her back at home in Phoenix, or the dozens of doctors’ appointments she would have the rest of the year, or the illnesses that would keep her from her friends, put her in the hospital and threaten her life. She was in her version of heaven and every day was, quite literally, filled with all the glitter and candy and mouse ears she wanted. We are grateful to have amazing photos and memories of this exceptional wish in Lauren’s life and she talks about it even now, two years later. Kyle was intensely focused on his wish—a pro baseball experience with his favorite Arizona Diamondbacks team. So focused, he did not realize his whole family also was there with him. Make-A-Wish Arizona and the Arizona Diamondbacks organization immersed Kyle with the team, gave him a uniform and access to all the players and coaches and even let him throw out the first pitch. I watched him interact with his heroes without even blinking, impressing them with his own knowledge of the team and stats. But nothing can beat the look on his face when he realized that 20,000 fans were cheering for him. He didn’t let the discomforts of his stiffened body take away from enjoying batting practice with the best sluggers on the roster. He could forget that he had spent the last week in bed with a severe respiratory infection and almost had to cancel his wish because of it. On his wish, Kyle felt not like a first grader confined to a wheelchair since age one, but like a real baseball player with his favorite team. We are grateful to the volunteers, donors and staff of Make-A-Wish Arizona for patiently and fantastically fulfilling the one true wish of two little kids who needed some time away from doctors and operating rooms and breathing machines to just be kids—not patients, not subjects to be studied, not thick folders of medical histories. There is nothing else like Make-A-Wish Arizona.
