“What you do is so nice!” That’s the comment we often hear when we mention to someone that we are involved with Make-A-Wish. Granting wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions is definitely a “nice” thing to do. But a wish experience is so much more. It is truly transformational for both the child and the family! In fact, when surveyed, nearly nine out of ten medical professionals indicated that the wish experience can have a positive impact on the child’s physical health. And nearly all wish parents say it helps make their families feel normal again. The wish provides them with hope, strength and joy, at a time when they need it the most! During fiscal year 2012, our Chapter granted 386 wishes to children in Georgia and Alabama, averaging more than one wish every day of the year. Making these dreams come true was accomplished through the generous support of individuals, foundations, corporations and organizations, right here in our local communities. In spite of the significant number of wishes we granted in 2012, the amount of deserving children waiting for their dreams to come true continues to grow! To better fulfill that expanding need, both Georgia and Alabama have recently reorganized into separate Chapters. By focusing on deserving children in their respective states, both Make-A-Wish Chapters will now be able to accelerate the granting of wishes within their separate territories. With hundreds of children, in Georgia alone, asking for their own wish experiences, Make-A-Wish Georgia is committed to making dreams come true in greater numbers than ever before. For them and their families, it will be both “nice” and transformational! We thank you for joining us in creating magical experiences for our children, right here, in our own Georgia backyard.

the power of a Wish award

the Debbie tillman award

is presented to an individual or group that has exhibited outstanding leadership over an extended period of time to help Make-A-Wish Georgia expand its ability to deliver its mission of granting wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. This year, we were proud to recognize Phil Martens and The Novelis Team! Atlanta-based Novelis is a leader in aluminum rolling and recycling. In 2010, they began their partnership with Make-A-Wish® Georgia with a donation of $250,000. This marked the single largest corporate gift in the organization’s history! Their commitment continued in 2011 and 2012, with the company having served as sponsors for all three of our chapter’s flagship events. Novelis continues to put forth opportunities for their employees to become engaged in volunteer service with our organization, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued generosity and leadership.

was created in honor of Debbie Tillman, an incredible leader, who, through tireless efforts, helped to launch Make-A-Wish Georgia in 1995 and served as the organization’s first Board Chairperson. This award is presented to an outstanding member of the Board of Directors, as voted on by the staff of Make-A-Wish. This year, George Georgiou received the award for his long-standing commitment to Make-A-Wish through Board leadership and service. Throughout his six years of service with Make-A-Wish Georgia, George has served as Board Chairman, Gala Chairperson, Tournament of Wishes Chairman, and has been instrumental in securing insurmountable amounts of in-kind gifts and opportunities for our wish children.

the Hope, strength and Joy award is presented to an outstanding volunteer who has helped to deliver hope through granting wishes, strength through their fundraising initiatives, and joy through their commitment to the mission of the organization. Jennifer Simpson has been a wish granting and fundraising volunteer with our organization since 2007. Over the course of her volunteer service with Make-A-Wish, she has granted 42 wishes throughout southwest Georgia! She also serves as a Chairperson for the Make-A-Wish Columbus Community Council, and continues to give of herself in many capacities to the organization.

Laura Stewart wish recipient

the William Blake Kuller “indomitable spirit” award was established in honor of wish child, Blake Kuller. This award is intended to honor a wish child or wish parent who embodies the essence of an “indomitable” spirit and possesses the qualities of persistence, bravery, compassion, integrity, dedication and humor, as Blake did. This year, Laura Stewart was the recipient of this award. Laura’s wish for a Pottery Barn bedroom makeover was granted in 2008. While completing high school, she served as a Make-A-Wish intern, learning more about the organization so that she could share publicly the importance of our work. After graduating high school and beginning her studies at Kennesaw State University, she became very involved in campus life and started a Relay for Life Club to continue to educate her classmates about health issues and challenge them to also become involved. Laura has left a permanent mark on this chapter and we honored her family with this award as a symbol of her wonderful spirit.

W.i.s.H. societY: WoMen inspirinG strenGtH anD Hope The W.I.S.H. Society is a newly formed initiative, targeted at inspiring women in our community to partner with Make-A-Wish to make a difference in the lives of local children who have been diagnosed with progressive, malignant, or degenerative diseases. This powerful leadership network of women inspired to change lives was launched in metro Atlanta in 2012 and has been a tremendous success. The seven founding members, Cathy Lefar, Jen Helfman, Jane Hennessy, Hilary Hill, Carol Martens, Kristina Newby and Becky Wallis helped to develop the foundation for the Society’s signature event, ‘An Evening of Hearts and Wishes,’ which will take place annually in February. The inaugural event raised over $80,000 while introducing new individual and corporate partners to Make-A-Wish Georgia. We invite you to learn more about this exciting new initiative and join with other dedicated women to help make a meaningful difference in the lives of the children and families we serve.

WISHES CAN’T WAIT caMpaiGn launcH Local celebrities, foundation partners and business executives gathered at the St. Regis Atlanta on July 17, 2012, to formally launch our Wishes Can’t Wait campaign. Wishes Can’t Wait is a special $2.5 million fundraising campaign established to address accumulated wishes and reduce the lengthy wait time for our wish children. An increased referral rate and rising wish costs, coupled with a weakened economy

6

MaKe-a-WisH GeorGia

over the past three years have created a ‘perfect storm’ in which wish requests have exceeded resources. This has resulted in a waiting list of over 650 children who have yet to have the opportunity to experience their most heartfelt wishes come true. Unfortunately, some of these children have had to wait up to two years for their wishes to come true.

Coy and Claire Wire and Matt and Sarah Ryan supporting Wishes Can’t Wait

Given the challenging medical conditions of our wish children, it is critical that their wishes be granted in a timely manner. At the successful conclusion of the Wishes Can’t Wait campaign, our chapter is expected to be more than self-sustaining. The 2012 annual fundraising revenue was 21% greater than 2011 income. Through the Wishes Can’t Wait campaign and the accelerating annual campaign, Make-A-Wish® Georgia will have the capability to fund both its currently delayed wishes and its ongoing stream of wish referrals moving forward. However, the success of this campaign hinges upon the generous contributions of individuals, corporations, and foundations within our local community. We are so grateful to the generous volunteers and donors who helped to make this campaign launch a success, and we look forward to the opportunity to engage others in our work.
